Experimental determination of correlations between spontaneously formed vortices in a superconductor

We have imaged spontaneously created arrays of vortices (magnetic flux quanta), generated in a superconducting film quenched through its transition temperature at rates around $10^9 K/s$. From these images, we calculated the positional correlation functions for two vortices and for 3 vortices. We compared our results with simulations of the time dependent Ginzburg Landau equation in 2D. The results are in agreement with the Kibble-Zurek scenario of spontaneous vortex creation. In addition, the correlation functions are insensitive to the presence of a gauge field.

Long range proximity effect in La2/3Ca1/3MnO3 (LCMO)/(100)YBa2Cu3O7-delta (YBCO) ferromagnet/superconductor bilayers: Evidence for induced triplet superconductivity in the ferromagnet

Scanning tunneling spectroscopy measurements conducted on epitaxially grown bilayers of half-metallic ferromagnetic La2/3Ca1/3MnO3 (LCMO) on superconducting (SC) (100)YBa2Cu3O7-delta (YBCO) reveal long-range penetration of superconducting order into the LCMO. This anomalous proximity effect manifests itself in the tunneling spectra measured on the LCMO layer as gaps and zero bias conductance peaks. Remarkably, these proximity-induced spectral features were observed for bilayers with LCMO thickness of up to 30 nm, an order of magnitude larger than the expected ferromagnetic coherence length in LCMO. We argue that this long-range proximity effect can be accounted for by the formation of spin triplet pairing at the LCMO side of the bilayer due to magnetic inhomogeneity at the interface or at domain walls. Possible symmetries of the induced order parameter are discussed.

Spatial modulations of mid-gap states in (001)La$_{1.88}$Sr$_{0.12}$CuO$_4$ films: Indications for anti-phase ordering of the d-wave order parameter

Using scanning tunneling spectroscopy we have investigated the spatial evolution of the anomalous c-axis zero bias conductance peak, discovered in a previous study by our group, in epitaxial La$_{1.88}$Sr$_{0.12}$CuO$_4$ thin films. We found an anisotropic spatial dependence of the corresponding low-energy density of states which complies with the predicted spectral features of an anti-phase ordering of the d-wave order parameter within the ab-plane. Such an ordering was recently suggested to account for the 1/8 anomaly in the high temperature superconductors and the dynamical layer decoupling recently reported to occur in the transport studies of La$_{15/8}$Ba$_{1/8}$CuO$_4$.

Correlations beyond the horizon

We have imaged spontaneously created arrays of vortices (magnetic flux quanta), generated in a superconducting film quenched through its transition temperature at rates around $10^9 K/s$. Spontaneous appearance of vortices is predicted by Kibble-Zurek and by Hindmarsh-Rajantie models of phase transitions under non-equilibrium conditions. Differentiating between these models requires a measurement of the internal correlations within the emerging vortex array. In addition to short range correlations predicted by Kibble and Zurek, we found unexpected long range correlations which are not described by any of the existing models.

A proximity induced pseudogap - evidence for preformed pairs

The temperature evolution of the proximity effect in Au/La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ and La$_{1.55}$Sr$_{0.45}$CuO$_4$/La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ bilayers was investigated using scanning tunneling microscopy. Proximity induced gaps, centered at the chemical potential, were found to persist above the superconducting transition temperature, $T_c$, and up to nearly the pseudogap crossover temperature in both systems. Such independence of the spectra on the details of the normal metal cap layer is incompatible with a density-wave order origin. However, our results can be accounted for by a penetration of incoherent Cooper pairs into the normal metal above $T_c$.

The interaction between the magnetic and superconducting order parameters in a La1.94Sr0.06CuO4 wire

We investigate the coupling between the magnetic and superconducting order parameters in an 8 m long meander line ("wire") made of a La1.94Sr0.06CuO4 film with a cross section of 0.5 x 100 um^2. The magnetic order parameter is determined using the Low-Energy muon spin relaxation technique. The superconducting order parameter is characterized by transport measurements and modified by high current density. We find that, when the superconducting order parameter is suppressed by the current, the magnetic transition temperature, Tm, increases. The extracted sign and magnitude of the Ginzburg-Landau coupling constant indicate that the two orders are repulsive, and that our system is located close to the border between first and second order phase transition.

Evidence for Induced Magnetization in Superconductor-Ferromagnet Hetero-structures: a Scanning Tunnelling Spectroscopy Study

We performed scanning tunneling spectroscopy of c-axis oriented YBCO films on top of which ferromagnetic SRO islands were grown epitaxially in-situ. When measured on the ferromagnetic islands, the density of states exhibits small gap-like features consistent with the expected short range penetration of the order parameter into the ferromagnet. However, anomalous split-gap structures are measured on the superconductor in the vicinity of ferromagnetic islands. This observation may provide evidence for the recently predicted induced magnetization in the superconductor side of a superconductor/ ferromagnet junction. The length scale of the effect inside the superconductor was found to be an order of magnitude larger than the superconducting coherence length. This is inconsistent with the theoretical prediction of a penetration depth of only a few superconducting coherence lengths. We discuss a possible origin for this discrepancy.

Enhancement of the superconducting transition temperature in La2-xSrxCuO4 bilayers: Role of pairing and phase stiffness

The superconducting transition temperature, Tc, of bilayers comprising underdoped La2-xSrxCuO4 films capped by a thin heavily overdoped metallic La1.65Sr0.35CuO4 layer, is found to increase with respect to Tc of the bare underdoped films. The highest Tc is achieved for x = 0.12, close to the 'anomalous' 1/8 doping level, and exceeds that of the optimally-doped bare film. Our data suggest that the enhanced superconductivity is confined to the interface between the layers. We attribute the effect to a combination of the high pairing scale in the underdoped layer with an enhanced phase stiffness induced by the overdoped film.

Scanning tunneling spectroscopy characterization of the pseudogap and the x = 1/8 anomaly in La2-xSrxCuO4 thin films

Using scanning tunneling spectroscopy we examined the local density of states of thin c-axis La2-xSrxCuO4 films, over wide doping and temperature ranges. We found that the pseudogap exists only at doping levels lower than optimal. For x = 0.12, close to the 'anomalous' x = 1/8 doping level, a zero bias conductance peak was the dominant spectral feature, instead of the excepted V- shaped (c-axis tunneling) gap structure. We have established that this surprising effect cannot be explained by tunneling into (110) facets. Possible origins for this unique behavior are discussed.

Penetration of Andreev bound states into the ferromagnet in a SrRuO$_{3}$/(110)YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ bilayer: a scanning tunneling spectroscopy study

Scanning tunneling spectroscopy of thin epitaxial $SrRuO_{3}/(110)YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-δ}$ ferromagnet/superconductor bilayers, reveal a clear penetration of the Andreev bound states into the ferromagnetic layer. The penetration is manifested in the density of states of the ferromagnet as a split zero bias conductance peak with an imbalance between peak heights. Our data indicate that the splitting occurs at the superconductor side as a consequence of induced magnetization, confirming recent theoretical predictions. The imbalance is attributed to the spin polarization in the ferromagnet.

Evidence for Crossed Andreev Reflections in bilayers of (100)YBCO and the itinerant ferromagnet SrRuO3

Scanning tunneling spectroscopy measurements on thin epitaxial SrRuO3/(100)YBCO ferromagnet/superconductor bilayers, reveal localized regions in which the superconductor order parameter penetrates the ferromagnet to more than 26 nm, an order of magnitude larger than the coherence length in the ferromagnetic layer. These regions consist of narrow (< 10 nm) and long strips, separated by at least 200 nm, consistent with the known magnetic domain wall structure in SrRuO3. We attributed this behavior to Crossed Andreev Reflections, taking place in the vicinity of the magnetic domain walls.

Anomalous proximity effect in gold coated (110) $YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-δ}$ films: Penetration of the Andreev bound states

Scanning tunneling spectroscopy of (110) $YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-δ}/Au$ bi-layers reveal a proximity effect markedly different from the conventional one. While proximity-induced mini-gaps rarely appear in the Au layer, the Andreev bound states clearly penetrate into the metal. Zero bias conductance peaks are measured on Au layers thinner than 7 nm with magnitude similar to those detected on the bare superconductor films. The peaks then decay abruptly with Au thickness and disappear above 10 nm. This length is shorter than the normal coherence length and corresponds to the (ballistic) mean free path.

Proximity Effect in Gold Coated $YBa_2Ca_3O_{7-δ}$ Films Studied by Scanning Tunneling Spectroscopy

Scanning tunneling spectroscopy on gold layers over-coating \textit{c}-axis $YBa_2Ca_3O_{7-δ}$ (YBCO) films reveals proximity induced gap structures. The gap size reduced exponentially with distance from \textit{a}-axis facets, indicating that the proximity effect is primarily due to the (100) YBCO facets. The penetration depth of superconductivity into the gold is $\sim 30$ nm, in good agreement with estimations for the dirty limit. The extrapolated gap at the interface is $\sim 15$ meV, consistent with recent point-contact experiments. The proximity-induced order parameter appears to have predominant \textit{s}-wave symmetry.

Role of Interfaces in the Proximity Effect in Anisotropic Superconductors

We report measurements of the critical temperature of YBCO-Co doped YBCO Superconductor-Normal bilayer films. Depending on the morphology of the S-N interface, the coupling between S and N layers can be turned on to depress the critical temperature of S by tens of degrees, or turned down so the layers appear almost totally decoupled. This novel effect can be explained by the mechanism of quasiparticle transmission into an anisotropic superconductor.
