Phase transfer between three visible lasers for coherent population trapping

Stringent conditions on the phase relation of multiple photons are a prerequisite for novel protocols of high-resolution coherent spectroscopy. In a recent experiment we have implemented an interrogation process of a Ca$^+$-ion cloud based on three-photon coherent population trapping, with the potential to serve as a frequency reference in the THz-range. This high-resolution interrogation has been made possible by phase-locking both laser sources for cooling and repumping of the trapped ions to a clock laser at 729~nm by means of an optical frequency comb. The clock laser, a titanium-sapphire laser built in our lab locked onto two high-finesse cavities reaches a linewidth of a few Hertz and a frequency stability below 10$^{-14}$ at one second, performances which can be copied onto the two other sources. In this paper we discuss the performances of the phase-transfer between the three involved lasers via the optical frequency comb.

Symmetry breaking in linear multipole traps

Radiofrequency multipole traps have been used for some decades in cold collision experiments, and are gaining interest for precision spectroscopy due to their low mi-cromotion contribution, and the predicted unusual cold-ion structures. However, the experimental realisation is not yet fully controlled, and open questions in the operation of these devices remain. We present experimental observations of symmetry breaking of the trapping potential in a macroscopic octupole trap with laser-cooled ions. Numerical simulations have been performed in order to explain the appearance of additional local potential minima, and be able to control them in a next step. We characterize these additional potential minima, in particular with respect to their position, their potential depth and their probability of population as a function of the radial and angular displacement of the trapping rods.

Coherent internal state transfer by three-photon STIRAP-like scheme for many-atom samples

A STIRAP-like scheme is proposed to exploit a three-photon resonance taking place in alkaline-earth-metal ions. This scheme is designed for state transfer between the two fine structure components of the metastable D-state which are two excited states that can serve as optical or THz qu-bit. The advantage of a coherent three-photon process compared to two-photon STIRAP lies in the possibility of exact cancellation of the first order Doppler shift which opens the way for an application to a sample composed of many ions. The transfer efficiency and its dependence with experimental parameters are analyzed by numerical simulations. This efficiency is shown to reach a fidelity as high as $(1-8.10^{-5})$ with realistic parameters. The scheme is also extended to the synthesis of a linear combination of three stable or metastable states.

Two-step Doppler cooling of a three-level ladder system with an intermediate metastable level

Doppler laser cooling of a three-level ladder system using two near-resonant laser fields is analyzed in the case of the intermediate level being metastable while the upper level is short-lived. Analytical as well as numerical results for e.g. obtainable scattering rates and achievable temperatures are presented. When appropriate, comparisons with two-level single photon Doppler laser cooling is made. These results are relevant to recent experimental Doppler laser cooling investigations addressing intercombination lines in alkali-earth metal atoms and quadrupole transitions in alkali-earth metal ions.

Terahertz frequency standard based on three-photon coherent population trapping

A scheme for a THz frequency standard based on three-photon coherent population trapping in stored ions is proposed. Assuming the propagation directions of the three lasers obey the phase matching condition, we show that stability of few 10$^{-14}$ at one second can be reached with a precision limited by power broadening to $10^{-11}$ in the less favorable case. The referenced THz signal can be propagated over long distances, the useful information being carried by the relative frequency of the three optical photons.

Evaluation of the ultimate performances of a Ca+ single-ion frequency standard

We numerically evaluate the expected performances of an optical frequency standard at 729 nm based on a single calcium ion. The frequency stability is studied through the Allan deviation and its dependence on the excitation method (single Rabi pulse or two Ramsey pulses schemes) and the laser linewidth are discussed. The minimum Allan deviation that can be expected is estimated to $σ_y(τ) \approx 2.5\times 10^{-15}/\sqrtτ$ with $τ$ the integration time. The frequency shifts induced by the environmental conditions are evaluated to minimize the uncertainty of the proposed standard by chosing the most suited environment for the ion. If using the odd isotope $^{43}$Ca$^{+}$ and a vessel cooled to 77 K, the expected relative shift is $-2 \times 10^{-16}$ with an uncertainty of $\pm 4\times10^{-16}$, mainly due to the quadrupole shift induced by the unknown static electric field gradient .
