Tunneling amplifies chirality-induced spin selectivity and explains its current-direction invariance

We propose a minimal model for chirality-induced spin selectivity (CISS) in dc transport through insulating chiral molecules, based on quantum tunneling and interaction-induced spin splitting. As a concrete realization of the latter, we consider a weak Zeeman interaction of the particle spin with the current-induced magnetic field, recently shown to occur in helical molecules. We show that quantum tunneling, combined with dissipation, amplifies the effect, so that even such a small spin-dependent perturbation can yield spin polarizations on the order of 100\% across a wide range of applied bias voltages. Furthermore, our tunneling scenario naturally reproduces the characteristic CISS symmetry of the current-voltage dependence -- namely, the invariance of the spin-polarization sign under reversal of the current direction -- while fully respecting Onsager's reciprocity relations.

Criticality and Quench Dynamics at the Anderson Transition of a Chern Insulator

We study the critical properties of the topological Anderson phase transition in a strongly disordered Chern insulator, separating the topological phase from a trivial Anderson insulator. We show that the transition is characterized by a non-zero electrical conductance and by the emergence of a critical length scale in the real-space profile of the local Chern marker. From this, we extract the correlation-length and the dynamical critical exponents, which are consistent with those of non-interacting models of the integer quantum Hall effect. We then ramp the disorder strength across the transition and study the ensuing dynamics. In contrast to clean topological systems, we find that the excitation density does not follow the Kibble-Zurek scaling. The non-equilibrium length scale associated with the local Chern marker is decoupled from the generation of excitations. For studied system sizes, we find it to be close to the Kibble-Zurek prediction for the topological-to-trivial quench, while it deviates from it for the reverse direction.

Step-Edge Anomaly in Topological Metals

Bulk-boundary correspondence guarantees the presence of robust, anomalous states on the boundary of topological matter. The edges of a two-dimensional Chern insulator harbor one-dimensional chiral states, which have a conductance $n\, e^2/h$, where $n$ is an integer that is solely determined by the bulk. In this work we show that step edges on the surface of three-dimensional topological metals have a robust conductance $K\, e^2/h$, where $K$ is also fixed by the bulk and assumes non-integer values. We explain this prediction on the basis of the topology of gapless systems, exemplify it on a lattice model, and connect to recent experimental observations of enhanced density of states at step-edges in topological metals.

Proximity superconductivity in chiral kagome antiferromagnets

Recent experiments on the chiral kagome antiferromagnet Mn$_3$Ge have provided strong evidence of proximity-induced spin-polarized superconductivity. We introduce and explore a minimal model which exhibits a rich phase diagram as a function of chemical potential and spin canting. We find a valley-singlet superconducting phase for chemical potentials and canting consistent with the experimental system. This phase transitions into a Chern insulator at larger canting and gives way to topological superconducting phases with Chern numbers ${\cal C}_{\rm BdG} = \pm 1, \pm 3$ at other chemical potentials. Our results show that proximity-induced superconductivity in kagome antiferromagnets is a promising route towards exotic superconductivity with spin-polarized Cooper pairs, with potential applications in spintronics.

Femtosecond signatures of optically induced magnons before ultrafast demagnetization

Optically induced demagnetization of 3d metallic ferromagnets proceeds as fast as ~100 fs and is a crucial prerequisite for spintronic applications, such as ultrafast magnetization switching and spin transport. On the 100 fs time scale, the magnetization dynamics is widely understood in the context of temperature models considering energy transfers between conduction electrons, magnons and crystal lattice. However, on even faster time scales, the flow of both angular momentum and energy between these subsystems has so far not been studied. Here, we measure ultrafast demagnetization by ultrabroadband THz-emission spectroscopy. We find that the rate of change of the magnetization does not rise instantaneously, but on a time scale as short as 10 fs. This rise is a signature that a transfer of angular momentum from the magnons to conduction electrons proceeds in less than 10 fs, before substantial demagnetization has happened. We further conclude that most of the spin dissipated by the lattice is transferred via magnon-lattice rather than electron-lattice interaction. These results show that the limiting speed of magnetization dynamics is not demagnetization, as generally believed, and harnessing the earliest magnon dynamics could be a new route towards an even faster spintronics.

Quantum anomalous Hall domains in a Quenched Topological Mott Insulator

We study an interacting spinless quadratic band touching model that realizes a topological Mott insulating state. We quench the interaction from a value corresponding to the nematic insulator to that of the quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) ordered phase. We perform time-dependent Hartree-Fock simulations and show that after the quench the system realizes an excited Dirac semimetal state, which is however unstable and spontaneously evolves to a state with inhomogeneous nematic and QAH order parameters. The modulations form a stripe pattern that grows exponentially with time until the local Chern marker reaches unity. The alternating QAH order defines a domain structure with boundaries that host chiral sublattice currents.

Complete many-body localization in the t-J model caused by random magnetic field

The many body localization (MBL) of spin-1/2 fermions poses a challenging problem. It is known that the disorder in the charge sector may be insufficient to cause full MBL. Here, we study dynamics of a single hole in one dimensional t-J model subject to a random magnetic field. We show that strong disorder that couples only to the spin sector localizes both spin and charge degrees of freedom. Charge localization is confirmed also for a finite concentration of holes. While we cannot precisely pinpoint the threshold disorder, we conjecture that there are two distinct transitions. Weaker disorder first causes localization in the spin sector. Carriers become localized for somewhat stronger disorder, when the spin localization length is of the order of a single lattice spacing.
