Correlation of the Superconducting Critical Temperature with Spin and Orbital Excitation Energies In (Ca{x}La{1-x})(Ba{1.75-x}La{0.25+x})Cu{3}O{y} as Measured by Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering

Electronic spin and orbital (dd) excitation spectra of (Ca{x}La{1-x})(Ba{1.75-x}La{0.25+x})Cu{3}O{y} samples are measured by resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS). In this compound, Tc of samples with identical hole dopings is strongly affected by the Ca/Ba substitution x due to subtle variations in the lattice constants, while crystal symmetry and disorder as measured by line-widths are x independent. We examine two extreme values of x and two extreme values of hole-doping content y corresponding to antiferromagnetic and superconducting states. The x dependence of the spin mode energies is approximately the same for both the antiferromagnetic and superconducting samples. This clearly demonstrates that RIXS is sensitive to J even in doped samples. A positive correlation between the superexchange J and the maximum of Tc at optimal doping Tc^{max} is observed. We also measured the x dependence of the d_{xy} -> d_{x^2-y^2} and d_{xz/yz} -> d_{x^2-y^2} orbital splittings. We infer that the effect of the unresolved d_{3z^2-r^2} -> d_{x^2-y^2} excitation on Tc^{max} is much smaller than the effect of J. There appears to be dispersion in the d_{xy} -> d_{x^2-y^2} peak of up to 0.05 eV. Our fitting of the peaks furthermore indicates an asymmetric dispersion for the d_{xz/yz} -> d_{x^2-y^2} excitation. A peak at ~0.8 eV is also observed, and attributed to a dd excitation in the chain layer.

Relation between cuprate superconductivity and magnetism: A Raman study of (CaLa)(BaLa)$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{y}$

We present an investigation of charge-compensated antiferromagnetic (Ca$_{x}$La$_{1-x}$)(Ba$_{1.75-x}$La$_{0.25+x}$)Cu$_{3}$O$_{y}$ single crystals using Raman scattering as well as muon spin rotation. In this system the parameter $x$ controls the Cu-O-Cu superexchange interaction via bond distances and buckling angles. The oxygen content $y$ controls the charge doping. In the absence of doping the two-magnon peak position is directly proportional to the superexchange strength $J$. We find that both $x$ and $y$ affect the peak position considerably. The Néel temperature determined from muon spin rotation on the same samples independently confirms the strong dependence of the magnetic interaction on $x$ and $y$. We find a considerable increase in the maximum superconducting transition temperature $T_{c}^{max}$ with $J$. This is strong evidence of the importance of orbital overlap to superconductivity in this family of cuprates.

Linking Dynamic and Thermodynamic Properties of Cuprates; an ARPES study of (CaLa)(BaLa)$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{y}$

We report angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) on two families of high temperature superconductors (Ca$_{x}$La$_{1-x}$)(Ba$_{1.75-x}$ La $% _{0.25+x}$)Cu$_{3}$O$_{y}$ with $x=0.1$ ($T_{c}^{max}=56$ K) and $x=0.4$ ($% T_{c}^{max}=82$ K). The Fermi surface (FS) is found to be independent of $x$ or $y$, and its size indicates extreme sample-surface overdoping. This universal FS allowes the comparison of dynamical properties between superconductors of similar structure and identical doping, but different $% T_{c}^{max}$. We find that the high-energy ($\left\vert E\right\vert >50$% meV) nodal velocity in the $x=0.4$ family is higher than in the $x=0.1$ family. The implied correlation between $T_{c}^{max}$ and the hopping rate $% t $ supports the notion of kinetic energy driven superconductivity in the cuprates. We also find that the antinodal gap is higher for the $x=0.4$ family.

Parallel and Perpendicular Susceptibility Above $T_{c}$ in La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ Single Crystals

We report direction-dependent susceptibility and resistivity measurements on La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ single crystals. These crystals have rectangular needle-like shapes with the crystallographic "c" direction parallel or perpendicular to the needle axis, which, in turn, is in the applied field direction. At optimal doping we find finite diamagnetic susceptibility above $T_{c}$, namely fluctuating superconductivity (FSC), only when the field is perpendicular to the planes. In underdoped samples we could find FSC in both field directions. We provide a phase diagram showing the FSC region, although it is sample dependent in the underdoped cases. The variations in the susceptibility data suggest a different origin for the FSC between underdoping (below 10%) and optimal doping. Finally, our data indicates that the spontaneous vortex diffusion constant above $T_c$ is anomalously high.

New Perspectives for Cuprate Research: CLBLCO Single Crystals

We report the successful growth of a large (Ca$_{x}$La$_{1-x}$)(Ba$_{1.75-x}$La$_{0.25+x}$)Cu$_{3}$O$_{y}$ (CLBLCO) single crystal. In this material, $x$ controls the maximum of Tc ($T_{c}^{\max}$), with minimal structural changes. Therefore, it allows a search for correlations between material properties and $T_{c}^{\max}$. We demonstrate that the crystals are good enough for neutron scattering and cleave well enough for Raman scattering. These results open new possibilities for cuprate research.

Evidence for two fluids in the ground state of cuprates

We report charge density measurements, using NMR, in the superconducting compound (Ca_{x}La_{1-x})(Ba_{1.75-x}La_{0.25+x})Cu_3O_{y}, which has two independent variables x (family) and y (oxygen). For underdoped samples we find the rate at which holes are introduced into the plane upon oxygenation to be family-independent. In contrast, not all carriers contribute to either antiferromagnetic or superconducting order parameters. This result is consistent with a two fluid phenomenology or intrinsic mesoscopic inhomogeneities in the bulk. We also discuss the impact of weak-chemical-disorder on T_{c}.

A magnetic analog of the isotope effect in cuprates

We present extensive magnetic measurements of the (Ca_xLa_{1-x})(Ba_{1.75-x}La_{0.25+x})Cu_{3}O_{y} (CLBLCO) system with its four different families (x) having a Tc^max(x) variation of 28% and minimal structural changes. For each family we measured the Neel temperature, the anisotropies of the magnetic interactions, and the spin glass temperature. Our results exhibit a universal relation Tc=c*J*n_s for all families, where c~1, J is the in plane Heisenberg exchange, and n_s is the carrier density. This relates cuprate superconductivity to magnetism in the same sense that phonon mediated superconductivity is related to atomic mass.

Probing exotic spin correlations by Muon Spin depolarization measurements with applications to spin glass dynamics

We develop a new method to probe the local spin dynamic autocorrelation function, using magnetic field dependent muon depolarization measurements. We apply this method to muSR experiments in the dilute Heisenberg spin glass AgMn(p at. %) at T>T_g where the correlations of the Mn local magnetic moment are strongly non-exponential. Our results clearly indicate that the dynamics of this spin glass cannot be described by a distribution of correlation times. Therefore, we analyze the data assuming a local spin correlation function which is the product of a power law times a cutoff function. The concentration and temperature dependence of the parameters of this function are determined. Our major conclusion is that in the temperature region close to Tg the correlation function is dominated by an algebraic relaxation term.
