Spacelike reduction of the gravitational topological terms and associated helicity densities

Helicity in gravity is a multifaceted concept, and several inequivalent definitions exist in the literature. In this work, we reduce the topological Pontryagin and Nieh-Yan terms to a constant time spacelike hypersurface. Remarkably, upon applying the SVT decomposition at the linearized level, we obtain four distinct helicity densities. The helicity density arising from the Nieh-Yan term is termed the spin-1 and spin-2 gravitomagnetic helicity density, depending on whether it originates from vector or tensor modes. Meanwhile, the helicity density arising from the Pontryagin term is termed the spin-1 and spin-2 gravito-current helicity density, according to the corresponding mode contributions. We study the mode and multipole expansions of these helicity functionals and apply them to leading order Newtonian two-body systems, weak field boosted Kerr, a locally defined slowly varying gyratonic pp-wave model, and a linearized gravitational Hopfion.

Higher-Order Topology in Monolayer FeSe

Generally, the topological corner state in two-dimensional second-order topological insulator (2D SOTI) is equivalent to the well-known domain wall state, originated from the mass-inversion between two adjacent edges with phase shift of pi. In this work, go beyond this conventional physical picture, we report a fractional mass-kink induced 2D SOTI in monolayer FeSe with canted checkerboard antiferromagnetic (AFM) order by analytic model and first-principles calculations. The canted spin associated in-plane Zeeman field can gap out the quantum spin Hall edge state of FeSe, forming a fractional mass-kink with phase shift of pi/2 at the rectangular corner, and generating an in-gap topological corner state with fractional charge of e/4. Moreover, the topological corner state is robust to local perturbation, existing in both naturally and non-naturally cleaved corners, regardless of the edge orientation. Our results not only demonstrate a material system to realize the unique 2D AFM SOTI, but also pave a new way to design the higher-order topological states from fractional mass-kink with arbitrary phase shift, which are expected to draw immediate experimental attention.

Evidence for Weyl fermions in the elemental semiconductor tellurium

The recent discovery of Weyl fermions in solids enables exploitation of relativistic physics and development of a spectrum of intriguing physical phenomena. They are constituted of pairs of Weyl points with two-fold band degeneracy, which in principle can be hosted in any materials without inversion or time-reversal symmetry. However, previous studies of Weyl fermions have been limited exclusively to semimetals. Here, by combining magneto-transport measurements, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, and band structure calculations, Weyl fermions are identified in an elemental semiconductor tellurium. This is mainly achieved by direct observation of the representative transport signatures of the chiral anomaly, including the negative longitudinal magnetoresistance and the planar Hall effect. Semiconductor materials are well suited for band engineering, and therefore provide an ideal platform for manipulating the fundamental Weyl fermionic behaviors. Furthermore, introduction of Weyl physics into semiconductors to develop "Weyl semiconductors" also creates a new degree of freedom for the future design of semiconductor electronic and optoelectronic devices.
