Topological quantum walks in cavity-based quantum networks

We present a protocol to implement discrete-time quantum walks and simulate topological insulator phases in cavity-based quantum networks, where the single photon is the quantum walker and the cavity input-output process is employed to realize the state-dependent translation operation. Different topological phases can be simulated through tuning the single-photon polarization rotation angles. We show that both the topological boundary states and topological phase transitions can be directly observed via measuring the final photonic density distribution. Moreover, we also demonstrate that these topological signatures are quite robust to practical imperfections. Our work opens a new prospect using cavity-based quantum networks as quantum simulators to study discrete-time quantum walks and mimic condensed matter physics.

A hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin method for the quad-curl problem

The quad-curl problem arises in magnetohydrodynamics, inverse electromagnetic scattering and transform eigenvalue problems. In this paper we investigate a hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin method to solve the quad-curl problem based on a mixed formulation. The divergence-free condition is enforced by introducing a Lagrange multiplier into the system. The analysis is performed for the model problem with low regularity, which is posed on a Lipschitz polyhedron domain.

Evolutionary Multitasking for Semantic Web Service Composition

Web services are basic functions of a software system to support the concept of service-oriented architecture. They are often composed together to provide added values, known as web service composition. Researchers often employ Evolutionary Computation techniques to efficiently construct composite services with near-optimized functional quality (i.e., Quality of Semantic Matchmaking) or non-functional quality (i.e., Quality of Service) or both due to the complexity of this problem. With a significant increase in service composition requests, many composition requests have similar input and output requirements but may vary due to different preferences from different user segments. This problem is often treated as a multi-objective service composition so as to cope with different preferences from different user segments simultaneously. Without taking a multi-objective approach that gives rise to a solution selection challenge, we perceive multiple similar service composition requests as jointly forming an evolutionary multi-tasking problem in this work. We propose an effective permutation-based evolutionary multi-tasking approach that can simultaneously generate a set of solutions, with one for each service request. We also introduce a neighborhood structure over multiple tasks to allow newly evolved solutions to be evaluated on related tasks. Our proposed method can perform better at the cost of only a fraction of time, compared to one state-of-art single-tasking EC-based method. We also found that the use of the proper neighborhood structure can enhance the effectiveness of our approach.

Off-Policy Actor-Critic in an Ensemble: Achieving Maximum General Entropy and Effective Environment Exploration in Deep Reinforcement Learning

We propose a new policy iteration theory as an important extension of soft policy iteration and Soft Actor-Critic (SAC), one of the most efficient model free algorithms for deep reinforcement learning. Supported by the new theory, arbitrary entropy measures that generalize Shannon entropy, such as Tsallis entropy and Renyi entropy, can be utilized to properly randomize action selection while fulfilling the goal of maximizing expected long-term rewards. Our theory gives birth to two new algorithms, i.e., Tsallis entropy Actor-Critic (TAC) and Renyi entropy Actor-Critic (RAC). Theoretical analysis shows that these algorithms can be more effective than SAC. Moreover, they pave the way for us to develop a new Ensemble Actor-Critic (EAC) algorithm in this paper that features the use of a bootstrap mechanism for deep environment exploration as well as a new value-function based mechanism for high-level action selection. Empirically we show that TAC, RAC and EAC can achieve state-of-the-art performance on a range of benchmark control tasks, outperforming SAC and several cutting-edge learning algorithms in terms of both sample efficiency and effectiveness.

Optimizing Controller Placement for Software-Defined Networks

Controller placement problem (CPP) is a key issue for Software-Defined Networking (SDN) with distributed controller architectures. This problem aims to determine a suitable number of controllers deployed in important locations so as to optimize the overall network performance. In comparison to communication delay, existing literature on the CPP assumes that the influence of controller workload distribution on network performance is negligible. In this paper, we tackle the CPP that simultaneously considers the communication delay, the control plane utilization, and the controller workload distribution. Due to this reason, our CPP is intrinsically different from and clearly more difficult than any previously studied CPPs that are NP-hard. To tackle this challenging issue, we develop a new algorithm that seamlessly integrates the genetic algorithm (GA) and the gradient descent (GD) optimization method. Particularly, GA is used to search for suitable CPP solutions. The quality of each solution is further evaluated through GD. Simulation results on two representative network scenarios (small-scale and large-scale) show that our algorithm can effectively strike the trade-off between the control plane utilization and the network response time.

Composing Distributed Data-intensive Web Services Using a Flexible Memetic Algorithm

Web Service Composition (WSC) is a particularly promising application of Web services, where multiple individual services with specific functionalities are composed to accomplish a more complex task, which must fulfil functional requirements and optimise Quality of Service (QoS) attributes, simultaneously. Additionally, large quantities of data, produced by technological advances, need to be exchanged between services. Data-intensive Web services, which manipulate and deal with those data, are of great interest to implement data-intensive processes, such as distributed Data-intensive Web Service Composition (DWSC). Researchers have proposed Evolutionary Computing (EC) fully-automated WSC techniques that meet all the above factors. Some of these works employed Memetic Algorithms (MAs) to enhance the performance of EC through increasing its exploitation ability of in searching neighbourhood area of a solution. However, those works are not efficient or effective. This paper proposes an MA-based approach to solving the problem of distributed DWSC in an effective and efficient manner. In particular, we develop an MA that hybridises EC with a flexible local search technique incorporating distance of services. An evaluation using benchmark datasets is carried out, comparing existing state-of-the-art methods. Results show that our proposed method has the highest quality and an acceptable execution time overall.

Observation of second sound in graphite at temperatures above 100 K

Wavelike thermal transport in solids, referred to as second sound, has until now been an exotic phenomenon limited to a handful of materials at low temperatures. This has restricted interest in its occurrence and in its potential applications. Through time-resolved optical measurements of thermal transport on 5-20 μm length scales in graphite, we have made direct observations of second sound at temperatures above 100 K. The results are in qualitative agreement with ab initio calculations that predict wavelike phonon hydrodynamics on ~ 1-μm length scale up to almost room temperature. The results suggest an important role of second sound in microscale transient heat transport in two-dimensional and layered materials in a wide temperature range.

Topological pumping of a single magnon in a one-dimensional spin-dependent optical superlattice

Topological pumping of ultracold atomic gases has recently been demonstrated in two experiments (Nat. Phys. 12, 296; 12, 350 (2016)). Here we study the topological pumping of a single magnon in a dynamically controlled spin-dependent optical superlattice. When the interaction between atoms is strong, this system supports a dynamical version of topological magnon insulator phase. By initially putting a single magnon in the superlattice and slowly varying the dynamical controlled parameter over one period, the shift of the magnon density center is quantized and equal to the topological Chern number. Moreover, we also find that the direction of this quantized shift is entanglement-dependent. Our result provides a route for realizing topological pumping of quasiparticles in strongly correlated ultracold atomic system and for studying the interplay between topological pumping and quantum entanglement.

Distance-Guided GA-Based Approach to Distributed Data-Intensive Web Service Composition

Distributed computing which uses Web services as fundamental elements, enables high-speed development of software applications through composing many interoperating, distributed, re-usable, and autonomous services. As a fundamental challenge for service developers, service composition must fulfil functional requirements and optimise Quality of Service (QoS) attributes, simultaneously. On the other hand, huge amounts of data have been created by advances in technologies, which may be exchanged between services. Data-intensive Web services are of great interest to implement data-intensive processes. However, current approaches to Web service composition have omitted either the effect of data, or the distribution of services. Evolutionary Computing (EC) techniques allow for the creation of compositions that meet all the above factors. In this paper, we will develop Genetic Algorithm (GA)-based approach for solving the problem of distributed data-intensive Web service composition (DWSC). In particular, we will introduce two new heuristics, i.e. Longest Common Subsequence(LCS) distance of services, in designing crossover operators. Additionally, a new local search technique incorporating distance of services will be proposed.

Robust quantum state transfer via topological edge states in superconducting qubit chains

Robust quantum state transfer (QST) is an indispensable ingredient in scalable quantum information processing. Here we present an experimentally feasible mechanism for realizing robust QST via topologically protected edge states in superconducting qubit chains. Using superconducting Xmon qubits with tunable couplings, we construct generalized Su-Schrieffer-Heeger models and analytically derive the wave functions of topological edge states. We find that such edge states can be employed as a quantum channel to realize robust QST between remote qubits. With a numerical simulation, we show that both single-qubit states and two-qubit entangled states can be robustly transferred in the presence of sizable imperfections in the qubit couplings. The transfer fidelity demonstrates a wide plateau at the value of unity in the imperfection magnitude. This approach is general and can be implemented in a variety of quantum computing platforms.

Topology-dependent quantum dynamics and entanglement-dependent topological pumping in superconducting qubit chains

We propose a protocol using a tunable Xmon qubit chain to construct generalized Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) models that support various topological phases. We study the time evolution of a single-excitation quantum state in a SSH-type qubit chain and find that such dynamics is linked to topological winding number. We also investigate the adiabatic transfer of a single-excitation quantum state in a generalized SSH-type qubit chain and show that this process can be connected with topological Chern number and be used to generate a novel entanglement-dependent topological pumping. All results have been demonstrated to be robust against qubit coupling imperfections and can be observed in a short Xmon qubit chain. Our study provides a simple method to directly measure topological invariants rooted in momentum space using quantum dynamics in real space.

A Roadmap for HEP Software and Computing R&D for the 2020s

Particle physics has an ambitious and broad experimental programme for the coming decades. This programme requires large investments in detector hardware, either to build new facilities and experiments, or to upgrade existing ones. Similarly, it requires commensurate investment in the R&D of software to acquire, manage, process, and analyse the shear amounts of data to be recorded. In planning for the HL-LHC in particular, it is critical that all of the collaborating stakeholders agree on the software goals and priorities, and that the efforts complement each other. In this spirit, this white paper describes the R&D activities required to prepare for this software upgrade.

Upper branch magnetism in quantum magnets: Collapses of excited levels and emergent selection rules

In many quantum magnets especially the rare-earth ones, the low-lying crystal field states are not well separated from the excited ones and thus are insufficient to describe the low-temperature magnetic properties. Inspired by this simple observation, we develop a microscopic theory to describe the magnetic physics due to the collapses of the weak crystal field states. We find two cases where the excited crystal field states should be seriously included into the theory. One case is when the bandwidth of the excited crystal field states is comparable to the crystal field gap. The other case is when the exchange energy gain between the low-lying and excited crystal field states overcomes the crystal field gap. Both cases could drive a phase transition and result in magnetic orders by involving the excited crystal field states. We dub the above physics as upper branch magnetism and phase transition. We discuss the multitude of magnetic phases and the emergent selection rules for the detection of the underlying excitations. We expect our results to help improve the understanding of many rare-earth magnets with weak crystal field gaps such as Tb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ and Tb$_2$Sn$_2$O$_7$, and also provide a complementary perspective to the prevailing local "$J$" physics in $4d$/$5d$ magnets.

$\rm ^3_ΛH$ and $\rm ^3_{\overline Λ}\overline H$ production and characterization in Cu+Cu collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm{NN}}}=200$GeV

Production of the (anti)hypertriton nuclei $\rm ^3_ΛH$ and $\rm ^3_{\overline Λ}\overline H$ in Cu+Cu interactions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm{NN}}}=200$GeV is studied at three centrality bins of 0-10\%, 10-30\% and 30-60\% using the dynamically constrained phase-space coalescence model together with [PACIAE] model simulations. The $\rm ^3H(^3\overline H)$ and $\rm ^3He(^3\overline {He})$ nuclei has been compared. It is indicated by the study that the yields of light nuclei and hypernuclei increase rapidly from peripheral to central collisions while their anti-particle to particle ratios keep unchanged for different centrality bins. The strangeness population factor $S_3=\rm{{^3_ΛH}/({^3{He}}\times Λ/p)}$ was found to be close to unity, and was compatible with the STAR data and theoretical model calculation, suggesting that the phase-space population of strange quarks is similar with the ones of light quarks and the creation of deconfined high temperature quark matter in Cu+Cu collisions.

An HDG Method for Time-dependent Drift-Diffusion Model of Semiconductor Devices

We propose a hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) finite element method to approximate the solution of the time dependent drift-diffusion problem. This system involves a nonlinear convection diffusion equation for the electron concentration $u$ coupled to a linear Poisson problem for the the electric potential $ϕ$. The non-linearity in this system is the product of the $\nabla ϕ$ with $u$. An improper choice of a numerical scheme can reduce the convergence rate. To obtain optimal HDG error estimates for $ϕ$, $u$ and their gradients, we utilize two different HDG schemes to discretize the nonlinear convection diffusion equation and the Poisson equation. We prove optimal order error estimates for the semidiscrete problem. We also present numerical experiments to support our theoretical results.

A Class of Embedded DG Methods for Dirichlet Boundary Control of Convection Diffusion PDEs

We investigated an hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) method for a convection diffusion Dirichlet boundary control problem in our earlier work [SIAM J. Numer. Anal. 56 (2018) 2262-2287] and obtained an optimal convergence rate for the control under some assumptions on the desired state and the domain. In this work, we obtain the same convergence rate for the control using a class of embedded DG methods proposed by Nguyen, Peraire and Cockburn [J. Comput. Phys. vol. 302 (2015), pp. 674-692] for simulating fluid flows. Since the global system for embedded DG methods uses continuous elements, the number of degrees of freedom for the embedded DG methods are smaller than the HDG method, which uses discontinuous elements for the global system. Moreover, we introduce a new simpler numerical analysis technique to handle low regularity solutions of the boundary control problem. We present some numerical experiments to confirm our theoretical results.

An HDG Method for Dirichlet Boundary Control of Convection Dominated Diffusion PDE

We first propose a hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) method to approximate the solution of a \emph{convection dominated} Dirichlet boundary control problem. Dirichlet boundary control problems and convection dominated problems are each very challenging numerically due to solutions with low regularity and sharp layers, respectively. Although there are some numerical analysis works in the literature on \emph{diffusion dominated} convection diffusion Dirichlet boundary control problems, we are not aware of any existing numerical analysis works for convection dominated boundary control problems. Moreover, the existing numerical analysis techniques for convection dominated PDEs are not directly applicable for the Dirichlet boundary control problem because of the low regularity solutions. In this work, we obtain an optimal a priori error estimate for the control under some conditions on the domain and the desired state. We also present some numerical experiments to illustrate the performance of the HDG method for convection dominated Dirichlet boundary control problems.

$R^4$ corrections to holographic Schwinger effect

We consider $R^4$ corrections to the holographic Schwinger effect in an AdS black hole background and a confining D3-brane background. The potential between a test particle pair are performed for both backgrounds. We find there is no potential barrier in the critical electric field, which means that the system becomes catastrophically unstable. It is shown that for both backgrounds increasing the inverse 't Hooft coupling parameter $1/λ$ enhances the Schwinger effect. We also discuss the possible relation between the Schwinger effect and the viscosity-entropy ratio $η/s$ in strong coupling.
