Thermal near-field radiative transfer between two spheres

Radiative energy transfer between closely spaced bodies is known to be significantly larger than that predicted by classical radiative transfer because of tunneling due to evanescent waves. Theoretical analysis of near--field radiative transfer is mainly restricted to radiative transfer between two half--spaces or spheres treated in the dipole approximation (very small sphere) or proximity force approximation (radius of sphere much greater than the gap). Sphere--sphere or sphere--plane configurations beyond the dipole approximation or proximity force approximation have not been attempted. In this work, the radiative energy transfer between two adjacent non--overlapping spheres of arbitrary diameters and gaps is analyzed numerically. For spheres of small diameter (compared to the wavelength), the results coincide with the dipole approximation. We see that the proximity force approximation is not valid for spheres with diameters much larger than the gap, even though this approximation is well established for calculating forces. From the numerical results, a regime map is constructed based on two non--dimensional length scales for the validity of different approximations.

Near-field radiative heat transfer between a sphere and a substrate

Near-field force and energy exchange between two objects due to quantum electrodynamic fluctuations give rise to interesting phenomena such as Casimir and van der Waals forces, and thermal radiative transfer exceeding Planck's theory of blackbody radiation. Although significant progress has been made in the past on the precise measurement of Casimir force related to zero-point energy, experimental demonstration of near-field enhancement of radiative heat transfer is difficult. In this work, we present a sensitive technique of measuring near-field radiative transfer between a microsphere and a substrate using a bi-material atomic force microscope (AFM) cantilever, resulting in "heat transfer-distance" curves. Measurements of radiative transfer between a sphere and a flat substrate show the presence of strong near-field effects resulting in enhancement of heat transfer over the predictions of the Planck blackbody radiation theory.

A no-ghost theorem for the bosonic Nappi-Witten string

We prove a no-ghost theorem for a bosonic string propagating in Nappi-Witten spacetime. This is achieved in two steps. We first demonstrate unitarity for a class of NW/U(1) modules: the norm of any state which is primary with respect to a chosen timelike U(1) is non-negative. We then show that physical states - states satisfying the Virasoro constraints - in a class of modules of an affinisation of the Nappi-Witten algebra are contained in the NW/U(1) modules. Similar to the case of strings on $AdS_3$, in order to saturate the spectrum obtained in light-cone quantization we are led to include modules with energy not bounded from below, which are related to modules with energy bounded from below by spectral flow automorphisms.

Excitation spectrum and magnetic field effects in a quantum critical spin-orbital system:FeSc$_2$S$_4$

The orbitally degenerate A-site spinel compound FeSc2S4 has been experimentally identified as a ``spin-orbital liquid'', with strong fluctuations of both spins and orbitals. Assuming that the second neighbor spin exchange J2 is the dominant one, we argued in a recent theoretical study [Chen et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 102, 096406 (2009)] that FeSc2S4 is in a local ``spin-orbital singlet'' state driven by spin orbit coupling, close to a quantum critical point, which separates the ``spin-orbital singlet'' phase from a magnetically and orbitally ordered phase. In this paper, we refine further and develop this theory of FeSc2S4 . First, we show that inclusion of a small first neighbor exchange J1 induces a narrow region of incommensurate phase near the quantum critical point. Next, we derive the phase diagram in the presence of an external magnetic field B, and show that the latter suppresses the ordered phase. Lastly, we compute the field dependent dynamical magnetic susceptibility $χ(k, ω; B)$, from which we extract a variety of physical quantities. Comparison with and suggestions for experiment are discussed.

Coulomb gas transitions in three-dimensional classical dimer models

Close-packed, classical dimer models on three-dimensional, bipartite lattices harbor a Coulomb phase with power-law correlations at infinite temperature. Here, we discuss the nature of the thermal phase transition out of this Coulomb phase for a variety of dimer models which energetically favor crystalline dimer states with columnar ordering. For a family of these models we find a direct thermal transition from the Coulomb phase to the dimer crystal. While some systems exhibit (strong) first-order transitions in correspondence with the Landau-Ginzburg-Wilson paradigm, we also find clear numerical evidence for continuous transitions. A second family of models undergoes two consecutive thermal transitions with an intermediate paramagnetic phase separating the Coulomb phase from the dimer crystal. We can describe all of these phase transitions in one unifying framework of candidate field theories with two complex Ginzburg-Landau fields coupled to a U(1) gauge field. We derive the symmetry-mandated Ginzburg-Landau actions in these field variables for the various dimer models and discuss implications for their respective phase transitions.

Lyman spectra of holes bound to Cu, Ag, and Au acceptors in ZnTe and CdTe

The group IB impurities (Cu, Ag, and Au) incorporated into II-VI zinc blende hosts of ZnTe and CdTe exhibit well resolved excitation lines followed by a photoionization continuum in their infrared absorption spectra. They are associated with transitions from a "1s-like" ground state to various "p-like" excited state characteristic of a hole bound to a Coulomb center. Their spacing agree well with those predicted in the effective mass theory for single acceptors as expected for group IB elements substitutionally replacing the group IIB cations of the host. The occurrence of the simultaneous excitation of the Lyman transitions in combination with the zone center longitudinal optical phonon and hence lying in the photoionization continuum and displaying Fano-like asymmetries are features described and interpreted.

A Spin-Orbital Singlet and Quantum Critical Point on the Diamond Lattice: FeSc2S4

We present a theory of spin and orbital physics in the A-site spinel compound FeSc2S4, which experimentally exhibits a broad "spin-orbital liquid" regime. A spin-orbital Hamiltonian is derived from a combination of microscopic consideration and symmetry analysis. We demonstrate a keen competition between spin-orbit interactions, which favor formation of a local "Spin-Orbital Singlet" (SOS), and exchange, which favors magnetic and orbital ordering. Separating the SOS from the ordered state is a quantum critical point (QCP). We argue that FeSc2S4 is close to this QCP on the SOS side. The full phase diagram of the model includes a commensurate-incommensurate transition within the ordered phase. A variety of comparison to and suggestion for experiments are discussed.

Spin-orbit effects in Na$_4$Ir$_3$O$_8$, a hyper-kagomé lattice antiferromagnet

We consider spin-orbit coupling effects in Na$_4$Ir$_3$O$_8$, a material in which Ir$^{4+}$ spins form an hyper-kagomé lattice, a three-dimensional network of corner-sharing triangles. We argue that both low temperature thermodynamic measurements and the impurity susceptibility induced by dilute substitution of Ti for Ir are suggestive of significant spin-orbit effects. Because of uncertainties in the crystal-field parameters, we consider two limits in which the spin-orbit coupling is either weak or strong compared to the non-cubic atomic splittings. A semi-microscopic calculation of the exchange Hamiltonian confirms that indeed large antisymmetric Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) and/or symmetric exchange anisotropy may be present. In the strong spin-orbit limit, the Ir-O-Ir superexchange contribution consists of unfrustrated strong symmetric exchange anisotropy, and we suggest that spin-liquid behavior is unlikely. In the weak spin-orbit limit, and for strong spin-orbit and direct Ir-Ir exchange, the Hamiltonian consists of Heisenberg and DM interactions. The DM coupling is parametrized by a three component DM vector (which must be determined empirically). For a range of orientation of this vector, frustration is relieved and an ordered state occurs. For other orientations, even the classical ground states are very complex. We perform spin-wave and exact diagonalization calculations which suggest the persistence of a quantum spin liquid in the latter regime. Applications to Na$_4$Ir$_3$O$_8$ and broader implications are discussed.

Topological degeneracy and decoherence-protected qubits in circuit QED

We introduce an extended Dicke model with controllable long-range atom-atom interaction to simulate topologically ordered states and achieve decoherence-protected qubits. We illustrate our idea in an experimentally feasible circuit quantum electrodynamics scenario. Due to the intrinsic competition with the atom-field coupling strength, we first demonstrate that this atom-atom interaction can exhibit a novel topological quantum interference effect arising from the instanton and anti-instanton tunneling paths. As a consequence, this proposed model only with a few odd-number of atoms has a two-fold absolute degenerate ground-subspace with a large energy gap, which can become larger with the increasing of the system-size. It may also support the excitation of anyonic statistics, and thus can be regarded as a possible candidate for processing topological quantum memory.

Exotic quantum phase transitions in a Bose-Einstein condensate coupled to an optical cavity

A new extended Dicke model, which includes atom-atom interactions and a driving classical laser field, is established for a Bose-Einstein condensate inside an ultrahigh-finesse optical cavity. A feasible experimental setup with a strong atom-field coupling is proposed, where most parameters are easily controllable and thus the predicted second-order superradiant-normal phase transition may be detected by measuring the ground-state atomic population. More intriguingly, a novel second-order phase transition from the superradiant phase to the \textquotedblleft Mott" phase is also revealed. In addition, a rich and exotic phase diagram is presented.

Ground-State Properties for Coupled Bose-Einstein Condensates inside a Cavity Quantum Electrodynamics

We analytically investigate the ground-state properties of two-component Bose-Einstein condensates with few ⁸⁷Rb atoms inside a high-quality cavity quantum electrodynamics. In the SU(2) representation for atom, this quantum system can be realized a generalized Dicke model with a quadratic term arising from the interatomic interactions, which can be controlled experimentally by Feshbach resonance technique. Moreover, this weak interspecies interaction can give rise to an important zero-temperature quantum phase transition from the normal to the superradiant phases, where the atomic ensemble in the normal phase is collectively unexcited while is macroscopically excited with coherent radiations in the superradiant phase. Finally, we propose to observe this predicted quantum phase transition by measuring the direct and striking signatures of the photon field in terms of a heterodyne detector out of the cavity.

Semiclassical dynamics and long time asymptotics of the central-spin problem in a quantum dot

The spin of an electron trapped in a quantum dot is a promising candidate implementation of a qubit for quantum information processing. We study the central spin problem of the effect of the hyperfine interaction between such an electron and a large number of nuclear moments. Using a spin coherent path integral, we show that in this limit the electron spin evolution is well described by classical dynamics of both the nuclear and electron spins. We then introduce approximate yet systematic methods to analyze aspects of the classical dynamics, and discuss the importance of the exact integrability of the central spin Hamiltonian. This is compared with numerical simulation. Finally, we obtain the asymptotic long time decay of the electron spin polarization. We show that this is insensitive to integrability, and determined instead by the transfer of angular momentum to very weakly coupled spins far from the center of the quantum dot. The specific form of the decay is shown to depend sensitively on the form of the electronic wavefunction.

Critical Property of Geometric Phase in the Dicke Model

We obtain the ground-state energy level and associated geometric phase in the Dicke model analytically by means of the Holstein-Primakoff transformation and the boson expansion approach in the thermodynamic limit. The non-adiabatic geometric phase induced by the photon field is derived with the time-dependent unitary transformation. It is shown that the quantum phase transition characterized by the non-analyticity of the geometric phase is remarkably of the first-order. We also investigate the scaling behavior of the geometric phase at the critical point, which can be measured in a practical experiment to detect the quantum phase transition.

Quantum Phase Transition in Ultracold 87Rb Atom Gas with Radiant Field

A second-order quantum phase transition in two-species Bose-Einstein condensates of 87Rb atoms coupled by a quantized radiant field is revealed explicitly in terms of the energy spectrum which is obtained in the thermodynamic limit and is controllable by the coupling parameter between the atom and field. The scaling behavior of the collective excitation modes at the critical transition point is seen to be in the same universality class as that of the Dicke model. It is also demonstrated that the quantum phase transition is realizable below the critical temperature of BEC and can be detected experimentally by measuring the abrupt change of atom population imbalance.

Quantum Phase Transition in Finite-Size Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick Model

Lipkin model of arbitrary particle-number N is studied in terms of exact differential-operator representation of spin-operators from which we obtain the low-lying energy spectrum with the instanton method of quantum tunneling. Our new observation is that the well known quantum phase transition can also occur in the finite-N model only if N is an odd-number. We furthermore demonstrate a new type of quantum phase transition characterized by level-crossing which is induced by the geometric phase interference and is marvelously periodic with respect to the coupling parameter. Finally the conventional quantum phase transition is understood intuitively from the tunneling formulation in the thermodynamic limit.

Analysis of Trapped Quantum Degenerate Dipolar Excitons

The dynamics of quantum degenerate two-dimensional dipolar excitons confined in electrostatic traps is analyzed and compared to recent experiments. The model results stress the importance of artificial trapping for achieving and sustaining a quantum degenerate exciton fluid in such systems and suggest that a long-lived, spatially uniform, and highly degenerate exciton system was experimentally produced in those electrostatic traps.

Constraining Primordial Non-Gaussianities from the WMAP2 2-1 Cumulant Correlator Power Spectrum

We measure the 2-1 cumulant correlator power spectrum $C^{21}_l$, a degenerate bispectrum, from the second data release of the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP). Our high resolution measurements with SpICE span a large configuration space ($\simeq 168\times999$) corresponding to the possible cross-correlations of the maps recorded by the different differencing assemblies. We present a novel method to recover the eigenmodes of the correspondingly large Monte Carlo covariance matrix. We examine its eigenvalue spectrum and use random matrix theory to show that the off diagonal terms are dominated by noise. We minimize the $χ^2$ to obtain constraints for the non-linear coupling parameter $f_{NL} = 22 \pm 52 (1σ)$.
