Lifting topological protection in a quantum spin Hall insulator by edge coupling

The scientific interest in two-dimensional topological insulators (2D TIs) is currently shifting from a more fundamental perspective to the exploration and design of novel functionalities. Key concepts for the use of 2D TIs in spintronics are based on the topological protection and spin-momentum locking of their helical edge states. In this study we present experimental evidence that topological protection can be (partially) lifted by pairwise coupling of 2D TI edges in close proximity. Using direct wave function mapping via scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/STS) we compare isolated and coupled topological edges in the 2D TI bismuthene. The latter situation is realized by natural lattice line defects and reveals distinct quasi-particle interference (QPI) patterns, identified as electronic Fabry-Pérot resonator modes. In contrast, free edges show no sign of any single-particle backscattering. These results pave the way for novel device concepts based on active control of topological protection through inter-edge hybridization for, e.g., electronic Fabry-Pérot interferometry.

Finding citations for PubMed: A large-scale comparison between five freely available bibliographic data sources

As an important biomedical database, PubMed provides users with free access to abstracts of its documents. However, citations between these documents need to be collected from external data sources. Although previous studies have investigated the coverage of various data sources, the quality of citations is underexplored. In response, this study compares the coverage and citation quality of five freely available data sources on 30 million PubMed documents, including OpenCitations Index of CrossRef open DOI-to-DOI citations (COCI), Dimensions, Microsoft Academic Graph (MAG), National Institutes of Health Open Citation Collection (NIH-OCC), and Semantic Scholar Open Research Corpus (S2ORC). Three gold standards and five metrics are introduced to evaluate the correctness and completeness of citations. Our results indicate that Dimensions is the most comprehensive data source that provides references for 62.4% of PubMed documents, outperforming the official NIH-OCC dataset (56.7%). Over 90% of citation links in other data sources can also be found in Dimensions. The coverage of MAG, COCI, and S2ORC is 59.6%, 34.7%, and 23.5%, respectively. Regarding the citation quality, Dimensions and NIH-OCC achieve the best overall results. Almost all data sources have a precision higher than 90%, but their recall is much lower. All databases have better performances on recent publications than earlier ones. Meanwhile, the gaps between different data sources have diminished for the documents published in recent years. This study provides evidence for researchers to choose suitable PubMed citation sources, which is also helpful for evaluating the citation quality of free bibliographic databases.

Creating User Interface Mock-ups from High-Level Text Descriptions with Deep-Learning Models

The design process of user interfaces (UIs) often begins with articulating high-level design goals. Translating these high-level design goals into concrete design mock-ups, however, requires extensive effort and UI design expertise. To facilitate this process for app designers and developers, we introduce three deep-learning techniques to create low-fidelity UI mock-ups from a natural language phrase that describes the high-level design goal (e.g. "pop up displaying an image and other options"). In particular, we contribute two retrieval-based methods and one generative method, as well as pre-processing and post-processing techniques to ensure the quality of the created UI mock-ups. We quantitatively and qualitatively compare and contrast each method's ability in suggesting coherent, diverse and relevant UI design mock-ups. We further evaluate these methods with 15 professional UI designers and practitioners to understand each method's advantages and disadvantages. The designers responded positively to the potential of these methods for assisting the design process.

The $Ω_{cc}$ resonances with negative parity in the chiral constituent quark model

Spectrum of the low-lying $Ω_{cc}$ resonances with negative parity, which are assumed to be dominated by $sccq\bar{q}$ pentaquark components, is investigated using the chiral constituent quark model. Energies of the $Ω_{cc}$ resonances are obtained by considering the hyperfine interaction between quarks by exchanging Goldstone boson. Possible $sccq\bar{q}$ configurations with spin-parity $1/2^{-}$, $3/2^{-}$ and $5/2^{-}$ are taken into account. Numerical results show that the lowest $Ω_{cc}$ resonances with negative parity may lie at $4050 \pm 100$ MeV. In addition, the transitions of the $Ω_{cc}$ resonance to a pseudoscalar meson and a ground baryon state are also investigated within the chiral Lagrangian approach. We expect that these $Ω_{cc}$ resonances could be observed in the $\bar{D}Ξ_{c}$ channel by future experiments.

A Few-shot Learning Graph Multi-Trajectory Evolution Network for Forecasting Multimodal Baby Connectivity Development from a Baseline Timepoint

Charting the baby connectome evolution trajectory during the first year after birth plays a vital role in understanding dynamic connectivity development of baby brains. Such analysis requires acquisition of longitudinal connectomic datasets. However, both neonatal and postnatal scans are rarely acquired due to various difficulties. A small body of works has focused on predicting baby brain evolution trajectory from a neonatal brain connectome derived from a single modality. Although promising, large training datasets are essential to boost model learning and to generalize to a multi-trajectory prediction from different modalities (i.e., functional and morphological connectomes). Here, we unprecedentedly explore the question: Can we design a few-shot learning-based framework for predicting brain graph trajectories across different modalities? To this aim, we propose a Graph Multi-Trajectory Evolution Network (GmTE-Net), which adopts a teacher-student paradigm where the teacher network learns on pure neonatal brain graphs and the student network learns on simulated brain graphs given a set of different timepoints. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first teacher-student architecture tailored for brain graph multi-trajectory growth prediction that is based on few-shot learning and generalized to graph neural networks (GNNs). To boost the performance of the student network, we introduce a local topology-aware distillation loss that forces the predicted graph topology of the student network to be consistent with the teacher network. Experimental results demonstrate substantial performance gains over benchmark methods. Hence, our GmTE-Net can be leveraged to predict atypical brain connectivity trajectory evolution across various modalities. Our code is available at https: //github.com/basiralab/GmTE-Net.

TIC 308396022: a $δ$ Scuti--$γ$ Doradus hybrid with large-amplitude radial fundamental mode and regular g-mode period spacing

We analyse the pulsating behaviour of TIC 308396022 observed by the TESS mission. The star is a high-amplitude $δ$ Sct star (HADS) that shows a very rich amplitude spectrum using the 3-yr light curve. Among these frequencies, the strongest peak of $f_{1}= 13.20362567(12) \rm{d^{-1}}$ is identified as the radial fundamental mode, and we also find the first and second overtones ($f_2$ and $f_3$). In the low frequency range (< 2.5 $\rm{d^{-1}}$), 22 peaks are identified to be gravity modes, which show a regular period spacing of about 2460\,s and have the angular degree $l = 1$. The period spacing pattern does not show a significant downward trend, suggesting the star rotates slowly. We note that this is a $δ$ Sct--$γ$ Dor hybrid star containing a high-amplitude radial fundamental mode and a regular g-mode period spacing pattern. With O-C analysis, we find the star shows a significant time delay, implying that the star has a companion which is likely to be a white dwarf. The history of possible mass transfer provides a great opportunity to test the current theories of binary evolution, mass transfer, and pulsation.

Transport anomalies in the layered compound BaPt4Se6

We report a layered ternary selenide BaPt4Se6 featuring sesqui-selenide Pt2Se3 layers sandwiched by Ba atoms. The Pt2Se3 layers in this compound can be derived from the Dirac-semimetal PtSe2 phase with Se vacancies that form a honeycomb structure. This structure results in a Pt (VI) and Pt (II) mixed-valence compound with both PtSe6 octahedra and PtSe4 square net coordination configurations. Temperature dependent electrical transport measurements suggest two distinct anomalies: a resistivity crossover, mimic to the metal-insulator (M-I) transition at ~150K, and a resistivity plateau at temperatures below 10K. The resistivity crossover is not associated with any structural, magnetic or charge order modulated phase transitions. Magnetoresistivity, Hall and heat capacity measurements concurrently suggest an existing hidden state below 5K in this system. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements reveal a metallic state and no dramatic reconstruction of the electronic structure up to 200K.

Implementation of weak measurement amplification with the weak coherent light and optomechanical system

Most studies for postselected weak measurement in optomechanical system focus on using a single photon as a measured system. However, we find that using weak coherent light instead of a single photon can also amplify the mirror's position displacement of one photon. In the WVA regime (Weak Value Amplification regime), the weak value of one photon can lie outside the eigenvalue spectrum, proportional to the difference of the mirror's position displacement between the successful and failed postselection and its successful postselection probability is dependent of the mean photon number of the coherent light and improved by adjusting it accordingly. Outside the WVA regime, the amplification limit can reach the level of the vacuum fluctuations, and when the mean photon number and the optomechanical coupling parameter are selected appropriately, its successful postselection probability becomes higher, which is beneficial to observe the maximum amplification value under the current experimental conditions. This result breaks the constraint that it is difficult to detect outside the WVA regime. This opens up a new regime for the study of a single photon nonlinearity in optomechanical system.

Two flow approaches to the Loewner-Nirenberg problem on manifolds

We introduce two flow approaches to the Loewner--Nirenberg problem on comapct Riemannian manifolds $(M^n,g)$ with boundary and establish the convergence of the corresponding Cauchy--Dirichlet problems to the solution of the Loewner--Nirenberg problem. In particular, when the initial data $u_0\in C^{4,α}(M)$ is a solution or a strict subsolution to the equation $(1.1)$, the convergence holds for both the direct flow $(1.3)-(1.5)$ and the Yamabe flow $(1.10)$. Moreover, when the background metric satisfies $R_g\geq0$, the convergence holds for any positive initial data $u_0\in C^{2,α}(M)$ for the direct flow; while for the case the first eigenvalue $λ_1<0$ for the Dirichlet problem of the conformal Laplacian $L_g$, the convergence holds for $u_0>v_0$ where $v_0$ is the largest solution to the homogeneous Dirichlet boundary value problem of $(1.1)$ and $v_0>0$ in $M^{\circ}$ (the interior of $M$). We also give an equivalent description between the existence of a metric of positive scalar curvature in the conformal class of $(M,g)$ and $\displaystyle\inf_{u\in C^1(M),\,u\not\equiv 0\,\text{on}\,\partial M}Q(u)>-\infty$, where $Q$ is the energy functional (see $(1.8)$) of the second type Escobar-Yamabe problem.

Revisit prompt $J/ψ$ production in associated with Higgs Boson via gluon fusion at the LHC

The production of charmonium associated with Higgs boson via gluon fusion has been investigated in Ref.[Phys.Rev.D66,114002(2002)], in which they considered the contribution of final Higgs boson radiation off the charm quark at tree level and found that this process is to be far too rare to be observable in any of the considered experiments. In this paper, the production of prompt $J/ψ$ associated with Higgs boson via gluon fusion at the 14 TeV LHC within the factorization formalism of NRQCD is revisited. After considering the contribution from the final Higgs boson radiation off the top quark in the loop, which is {more than} three orders of magnitudes over the charm quark at tree level, the production of prompt $J/ψ$ associated with Higgs boson has great potential to be detected. The prompt $J/ψ$ production includes the direct production and indirect production via radiative or hadronic decays of high excited charmonium states. For the direct $J/ψ+ H$ production via gluon fusion loop-induced, the ${}^{3}S^{(8)}_1$ Fock state gives dominant contribution to the cross section, which is about 95\% to the total direct production. The indirect contribution via loop-induced is appreciable, since the summation of which from $ψ(2S) + H$, $χ_{c1} + H$ and $χ_{c2} + H$ is about $34\%$ to the total cross section of prompt $J/ψ+ H$. While the indirect contribution from $χ_{c0} + H$ is tiny, which can be neglected. With the great potential to be detected, prompt $J/ψ$ production in associated with Higgs boson can help us to further understand the mechanism of colour-octet, as well as can be useful to further investigate the coupling of the Higgs boson and fermion.

Charge density wave orders and enhanced superconductivity under pressure in the kagome metal CsV3Sb5

Superconductivity in topological kagome metals has recently received great research interests. Here, charge density wave (CDW) orders and the evolution of superconductivity under various pressures in CsV3Sb5 single crystal with V kagome lattice are investigated. By using high-resolution scanning tunnelling microscopy /spectroscopy (STM/STS), two CDW orders in CsV3Sb5 are observed which correspond to 4a*1a and 2a*2a superlattices. By applying pressure, the superconducting transition temperature Tc is significantly enhanced and reaches a maximum value of 8.2 K at around 1 GPa. Accordingly, CDW state is gradually declined as increasing the pressure, which indicates the competing interplay between CDW and superconducting state in this material. The broad superconducting transitions around 0.4 - 0.8 GPa can be related to the strong competition relation among two CDW states and superconductivity. These results demonstrate that CsV3Sb5 is a new platform for exploring the interplay between superconductivity and CDW in topological kagome metals.

Anomalous Hall effect in ferrimagnetic metal RMn6Sn6 (R = Tb, Dy, Ho) with clean Mn kagome lattice

Kagome lattice, made of corner-sharing triangles, provides an excellent platform for hosting exotic topological quantum states. Here we systematically studied the magnetic and transport properties of RMn6Sn6 (R = Tb, Dy, Ho) with clean Mn kagome lattice. All the compounds have a collinear ferrimagnetic structure with different easy axis at low temperature. The low-temperature magnetoresistance (MR) is positive and has no tendency to saturate below 7 T, while the MR gradually declines and becomes negative with the increasing temperature. A large intrinsic anomalous Hall conductivity about 250 Ω-1cm-1, 40 Ω-1cm-1, 95 Ω-1cm-1 is observed for TbMn6Sn6, DyMn6Sn6, HoMn6Sn6, respectively. Our results imply that RMn6Sn6 system is an excellent platform to discover other intimately related topological or quantum phenomena and also tune the electronic and magnetic properties in future studies.

Probing double hadron resonances by the complex scaling method

Many newly discovered excited states are interpreted as bound states of hadrons. Can these hadrons also form resonant states? In this paper, we extend the complex scaling method (CSM) to calculate the bound state and resonant state consistently for the $Λ_c D(\bar D)$ and $Λ_c Λ_c (\bar Λ_c)$ systems. For these systems, the $π, η, ρ$ meson exchange contributions are suppressed, the contributions of intermediate- and short-range forces from $σ/ω$ exchange are dominant. Our results indicate that $Λ_c D$ system can not form bound state and resonant state. There exist resonant states in a wide range of parameters for $Λ_c \bar D$ and $Λ_c Λ_c (\bar Λ_c)$ systems. For these systems, the larger bound state energy, the easier to form resonant states. Among all the resonant states, the energies and widths of the P wave resonant states are smaller and more stable, which is possible to be observed in the experiments. The energies of D and F wave resonant states can reach dozens of MeV and the widths can reach hundreds of MeV.

Detection of flare multi-periodic pulsations in mid-ultraviolet Balmer continuum, Ly-alpha, hard X-ray, and radio emissions simultaneously

Quasi-periodic pulsations (QPPs), which usually appear as temporal pulsations of the total flux, are frequently detected in the light curves of solar/stellar flares. In this study, we present the investigation of non-stationary QPPs with multiple periods during the impulsive phase of a powerful flare on 2017 September 06, which were simultane- ously measured by the Large-Yield RAdiometer (LYRA) and the Hard X-ray Modula- tion Telescope (Insight-HXMT), as well as the ground-based BLENSW. The multiple periods, detected by applying a wavelet transform and Lomb-Scargle periodogram to the detrended light curves, are found to be about 20-55 s in the Ly-alpha and mid-ultraviolet Balmer continuum emissions during the flare impulsive phase. Similar QPPs with multi- ple periods are also found in the hard X-ray emission and low-frequency radio emission. Our observations suggest that the flare QPPs could be related to nonthermal electrons accelerated by the repeated energy release process, i.e., triggering of repetitive magnetic reconnection, while the multiple periods might be modulated by the sausage oscillation of hot plasma loops. For the multi-periodic pulsations, other generation mechanisms could not be completely ruled out.

Screen2Words: Automatic Mobile UI Summarization with Multimodal Learning

Mobile User Interface Summarization generates succinct language descriptions of mobile screens for conveying important contents and functionalities of the screen, which can be useful for many language-based application scenarios. We present Screen2Words, a novel screen summarization approach that automatically encapsulates essential information of a UI screen into a coherent language phrase. Summarizing mobile screens requires a holistic understanding of the multi-modal data of mobile UIs, including text, image, structures as well as UI semantics, motivating our multi-modal learning approach. We collected and analyzed a large-scale screen summarization dataset annotated by human workers. Our dataset contains more than 112k language summarization across $\sim$22k unique UI screens. We then experimented with a set of deep models with different configurations. Our evaluation of these models with both automatic accuracy metrics and human rating shows that our approach can generate high-quality summaries for mobile screens. We demonstrate potential use cases of Screen2Words and open-source our dataset and model to lay the foundations for further bridging language and user interfaces.

HelpViz: Automatic Generation of Contextual Visual MobileTutorials from Text-Based Instructions

We present HelpViz, a tool for generating contextual visual mobile tutorials from text-based instructions that are abundant on the web. HelpViz transforms text instructions to graphical tutorials in batch, by extracting a sequence of actions from each text instruction through an instruction parsing model, and executing the extracted actions on a simulation infrastructure that manages an array of Android emulators. The automatic execution of each instruction produces a set of graphical and structural assets, including images, videos, and metadata such as clicked elements for each step. HelpViz then synthesizes a tutorial by combining parsed text instructions with the generated assets, and contextualizes the tutorial to user interaction by tracking the user's progress and highlighting the next step. Our experiments with HelpViz indicate that our pipeline improved tutorial execution robustness and that participants preferred tutorials generated by HelpViz over text-based instructions. HelpViz promises a cost-effective approach for generating contextual visual tutorials for mobile interaction at scale.

Automated identification of current sheets -- a new tool to study turbulence and intermittency in the solar wind

We propose a new method of the automated identification of current sheets (CSs) that represents a formalization of the visual inspection approach employed in case studies. CSs are often identified by eye via the analysis of characteristic changes in the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) and plasma parameters. Known visual and semi-automated empirical methods of CS identification are exact but do not allow a comprehensive statistical analysis of CS properties. Existing automated methods partially solve this problem. Meanwhile, these methods suggest an analysis of variations of the IMF and its direction only. In our three-parameter empirical method, we employ both the solar wind plasma and IMF parameters to identify CSs of various types. Derivatives of the IMF strength, the plasma beta and the ratio of the Alfv'en speed VA to the solar wind speed V taken with the one-second cadence are used. We find that the CS daily rate R correlates with the solar wind temperature T rather than with V and is proportional to the sum of the kinetic and thermal energy density ~ V2(N+5N')+10T(N+N'), where N'=2cm^-3 is the background level of the solar wind density N. Maxima of R are associated with stream/corotating interaction regions and interplanetary mass ejection sheaths. A multiyear list of CSs identified at 1 AU can be found at https://csdb.izmiran.ru

CEPC Research Report: Higgs Physics Analysis

In November 2018, the CEPC released the Conceptual Design Report (CDR) with the physics potential investigation and the analysis about different detector concepts. Since then, intensive researches on the Higgs Physics at the CEPC have been progressed. The run at top thresholds are also taken into consideration and the physics potential around the center-of-mass energy of 360GeV is studied. The $ttH$ channel information boost the precision of Higgs width measurement by a factor of 2 with respect to 240 GeV Higgs Runs. Different Higgs decay modes are analyzed in the CEPC Higgs factory at the center-of-mass energy of 240GeV, including Higgs to b/c/g and Higgs to $ττ$, which improves the Higgs measurement. Advanced analysis technologies are developed and applied in the analysis, such as jet reconstruction and lepton identification in jets. New interpretations are under developing to improve the performance.
