Growth and Characterization of Millimeter-sized Single Crystals of CaFeAsF

High-quality and sizable single crystals are crucial for studying the intrinsic properties of unconventional superconductors, which are lacking in the 1111 phase of the Fe-based superconductors. Here we report the successful growth of CaFeAsF single crystals with the sizes of 1-2 mm using the self-flux method. Owning to the availability of the high-quality single crystals, the structure and transport properties were investigated with a high reliability. The structure was refined by using the single-crystal x-ray diffraction data, which confirms the reports earlier on the basis of powder data. A clear anomaly associated with the structural transition was observed at 121 K from the resistivity, magnetoresistance, and magnetic susceptibility measurements. Another kink-feature at 110 K, most likely an indication of the antiferromagnetic transition, was also detected in the resistivity data. Our results supply a basis to propel the physical investigations on the 1111 phase of the Fe-based superconductors.

Synthesis, Structural, and Transport Properties of Cr-doped BaTi_2As_2O

The interplay between unconventional superconductivity and the ordering of charge/spin density wave is one of the most vital issues in both condensed matter physics and material science. The Ti-based compound BaTi_2As_2O, which can be seen as the parent phase of superconducting BaTi_2Sb_2O, has a layered structure with a space group P4/mmm, similar to that of cuprate and iron-based superconductors. This material exhibits a charge density wave (CDW) ordering transition revealed by an anomaly at around 200 K in transport measurements. Here, we report the synthesis and systematical study of the physical properties in Cr-doped BaTi_{2-x}Cr_xAs_2O (x = 0 - 0.154), and demonstrate that the transition temperature of the CDW ordering is suppressed gradually by the doped Cr element. The magnetization measurements confirm the evolution of the CDW ordering transition. These observed behaviors are similar to that observed in iron-based superconductors, but no superconductivity emerges down to 2 K. In addition, the first-principles calculations are also carried out for well-understanding the nature of experimental observations.

High-T_c superconductivity in ultrathin Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_8+x down to halfunit-cell thickness by protection with graphene

High-T_c superconductors confined to two dimension exhibit novel physical phenomena, such as superconductor-insulator transition. In the Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_8+x (Bi2212) model system, despite extensive studies, the intrinsic superconducting properties at the thinness limit have been difficult to determine. Here we report a method to fabricate high quality single-crystal Bi2212 films down to half-unit-cell thickness in the form of graphene/Bi2212 van der Waals heterostructure, in which sharp superconducting transitions are observed. The heterostructure also exhibits a nonlinear current-voltage characteristic due to the Dirac nature of the graphene band structure. More interestingly, although the critical temperature remains essentially the same with reduced thickness of Bi2212, the slope of the normal state T-linear resistivity varies by a factor of 4-5, and the sheet resistance increases by three orders of magnitude, indicating a surprising decoupling of the normal state resistance and superconductivity. The developed technique is versatile, applicable to investigate other two-dimensional (2D) superconducting materials.

Phase Diagram and Weak-link Behavior in Nd-doped CaFe_2As_2

The transport properties, phase diagram, and dopant distribution are investigated in systematically Nd doped CaFe_2As_2 single crystals. Coexistence of two superconducting (SC) phases with different critical transition temperature (T_c) is observed. The low-T_c phase emerges as x >= 0.031, and the T_c value increases to its maximum value of about 20 K at x = 0.083, the maximum doping level in our study. As x >= 0.060, the high-T_c phase with a T_c value of about 40 K is observed. The structure transition (STr) from tetragonal to orthorhombic phase vanishes suddenly around x = 0.060, where a new STr from tetragonal to collapsed tetragonal phase begins to turn up. Compared to the low-T_c phase, the end point of SC transition of the high-T_c phase is more sensitive to the magnetic field, showing a characteristic of Josephson weak-link behavior. Possible scenarios about this system are discussed based on our observations. We also find that the non-uniform SC properties cannot be attributed to the heterogeneous Nd distribution on the micro scale, as revealed by the detailed energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) measurements.

Power Law Like Correlation between Condensation Energy and Superconducting Transition Temperatures in Iron Pnictide/Chalcogenide Superconductors: Beyond the BCS Understanding

Superconducting condensation energy $U_0^{int}$ has been determined by integrating the electronic entropy in various iron pnictide/chalcogenide superconducting systems. It is found that $U_0^{int}\propto T_c^n$ with $n$ = 3 to 4, which is in sharp contrast to the simple BCS prediction $U_0^{BCS}=1/2N_FΔ_s^2$ with $N_F$ the quasiparticle density of states at the Fermi energy, $Δ_s$ the superconducting gap. A similar correlation holds if we compute the condensation energy through $U_0^{cal}=3γ_n^{eff}Δ_s^2/4π^2k_B^2$ with $γ_n^{eff}$ the effective normal state electronic specific heat coefficient. This indicates a general relationship $γ_n^{eff} \propto T_c^m$ with $m$ = 1 to 2, which is not predicted by the BCS scheme. A picture based on quantum criticality is proposed to explain this phenomenon.

Electron and Hole Injection via Charge Transfer at the Topological-Insulator $Bi_{2-x}Sb_xTe_{3-y}Se_y$/Organic-Molecule Interface

As a methodology for controlling the carrier transport of topological insulators (TI's), a flexible tuning in carrier number on the surface states (SS's) of three dimensional TI's by surface modifications using organic molecules is described. The principle of the carrier tuning and its type conversion of TI's presented in this research are based on the charge transfer of holes or electrons at the TI/organic molecule interface. By employing 2,3,5,6-tetrafluoro-7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane (F4-TCNQ) as an electron acceptor or tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ) as a donor for n- and p- Bi2-xSbxTe3-ySey (BSTS) single crystals, successful carrier conversion from n to p and its reverse mode is demonstrated depending on the electron affinities of the molecules. The present method provides a nondestructive and efficient method for local tuning in carrier density of TI's, and is useful for future applications.

A Field-directional Specific Heat Study on the Gap Structure of Overdoped Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$

Low-temperature specific heat is measured on the overdoped Ba(Fe_{1-x}Co_x)_2As_2 (x = 0.13) single crystal under magnetic fields along three different directions. A clear anisotropy is observed on the field dependent electronic specific heat coefficient γ(H). The value of γ(H) is obviously larger with magnetic field along [001] (c-axis) than that within the ab-plane of the crystal lattice, which cannot be attributed to the effect by anisotropy of the upper critical field. Meanwhile, the data show a rather small difference when the direction of the field is rotated from [100] to [110] direction within the ab-plane. Our results suggest that a considerable part of the line nodes is not excited to contribute to the quasiparticle density of states by the field when the field is within the ab-plane. The constraints on the topology of the gap nodes are discussed based on our observations.

Superconductivity induced by U-doping in the SmFeAsO system

Through partial substitution of Sm by U in SmFeAsO, a different member of the family of iron-based superconductors was successfully synthesized. X-ray diffraction measurements show that the lattice constants along the a and c axes are both squeezed through U doping, indicating a successful substitution of U at the Sm site. The parent compound shows a strong resistivity anomaly near 150 K, associated with spin-density-wave instability.U doping suppresses this instability and leads to a transition to the superconducting state at temperatures up to 49 K. Magnetic measurements confirm the bulk superconductivity in this system. For the sample with a doping level of x = 0.2, the external magnetic field suppresses the onset temperature very slowly, indicating a rather high upper critical field. In addition, the Hall effect measurements show that U clearly dopes electrons into the material.

Evidence for line nodes in the energy gap of the overdoped Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ from low-temperature specific heat measurements

Low-temperature specific heat (SH) is measured on Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$)$_2$As$_2$ single crystals in a wide doping region under different magnetic fields. For the overdoped sample, we find the clear evidence for the presence of $T^2$ term in the data, which is absent both for the underdoped and optimal doped samples, suggesting the presence of line nodes in the energy gap of the overdoped samples. Moreover, the field induced electron specific heat coefficient $Δγ(H)$ increases more quickly with the field for the overdoped sample than the underdoped and optimal doped ones, giving another support to our arguments. Our results suggest that the superconducting gap(s) in the present system may have different structures strongly depending on the doping regions.

Low Temperature Specific Heat of Optimally Doped BaFe$_{2-x}$$TM_x$As$_{2}$ ($TM$ = Co and Ni) Single Crystals: Constraint on the Pairing Gap

Low temperature specific heat has been measured in optimally doped and highly overdoped non-superconducting BaFe$_{2-x}$TM$_x$As$_{2}$ ($TM$ = Co and Ni) single crystals. By using the data of the overdoped samples, we successfully removed the phonon contribution of the optimally doped ones, and derived the electronic specific heat coefficient $γ_e$. Remarkably, we found a continuing temperature dependent $γ_e(T)$ which follows the quadratic relation $γ_e=γ_0+αT^2$ in the low temperature limit. Together with the very small residual term $γ_0$, linear magnetic field dependence of $γ_e$, it is concluded that there are either small segments of nodal lines, or point-like nodes in these samples.

Multi-band effect in the noncentrosymmetric superconductors Mg_{12-δ}Ir_{19}B_{16} revealed by Hall effect and magnetoresistance measurements

We report the longitudinal resistivity and Hall effect measurements on the noncentrosymmetric superconducting Mg$_{12-δ}$Ir$_{19}$B$_{16}$ samples with different critical transition temperatures. A strong temperature dependence of the Hall coefficient $R_H$ and nonlinear magnetic field dependence of the Hall resistivity $ρ_{xy}$ in wide temperature region are observed, suggesting a strong multi-band effect in this system. Moreover, a large magnetoresistance up to 20% is found at the field of 9 T. We also observe the violation of the Kohler's rule from our magnetoresistance data, further confirming the presence of multi-band effect in our samples. A detailed analysis shows that the data can't be simply described within the two-band scenario at low temperatures, so we argue that there may be more than two bands contributing to the conduction of the samples.

Superconductivity induced by doping Platinum in BaFe2As2

By substituting Fe with the 5d-transition metal Pt in BaFe2As2, we have successfully synthesized the superconductors BaFe2-xPtxAs2. The systematic evolution of the lattice constants indicates that the Fe ions were successfully replaced by Pt ions. By increasing the doping content of Pt, the antiferromagnetic order and structural transition of the parent phase is suppressed and superconductivity emerges at a doping level of about x = 0.02. At a doping level of x = 0.1, we get a maximum transition temperature Tc of about 25 K. The synchrotron powder x-ray diffraction shows that the resistivity anomaly is in good agreement with the structural transition. The superconducting transitions at different magnetic fields were also measured at the doping level of about x = 0.1, yielding a slope of -dHc2/dT = 5.4 T/K near Tc. A phase diagram was established for the Pt doped 122 system. Our results suggest that superconductivity can also be easily induced in the FeAs family by substituting the Fe with Pt, with almost the similar maximum transition temperatures as doping Ni, Co, Rh and Ir.

Low temperature specific heat in BaFe1.9Ni0.1As2 single crystals

Low-temperature specific heat was measured on the BaFe1.9Ni0.1As2 single crystals with critical transi-tion temperature Tc = 20.1 K. A clear specific heat jump with the value \DeltaC/T|Tc \approx 23 mJ/mol K^2 has been observed. In addition, a roughly linear magnetic field dependence of the electronic specific heat coefficient Δγ(H) is found in the zero-temperature limit, suggesting that at least one Fermi pocket, probably the hole derivative one, is fully gapped with a small anisotropy in the present sample. A slight curvature of the curve Δγ(H) may suggest a complex gap structure (anisotropic gap or nodes) at other Fermi surfaces.

Role of multiband effects and electron-hole asymmetry in the superconductivity and normal state properties of Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$

We report a systematic investigation, together with a theoretical analysis, of the resistivity and Hall effect in single crystals of Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$, over a wide doping range. We find a surprisingly great disparity between the relaxation rates of the holes and the electrons, in excess of an order of magnitude in the low-doping, low-temperature regime. The ratio of the electron to hole mobilities diminishes with temperature and doping (away from the magnetically ordered state) and becomes more conventional. We also find a straightforward explanation of the large asymmetry (compared to cuprates) of the superconducting dome: in the underdoped regime the decisive factor is the competition between AF and superconductivity (SC), while in the overdoped regime the main role is played by degradation of the nesting that weakens the pairing interaction. Our results indicate that spin-fluctuations due to interband electron-hole scattering play a crucial role not only in the superconducting pairing, but also in the normal transport.

Structural and transport properties of Sr2VO{3-delta}FeAs superconductors with different oxygen deficiencies

Sr2VO{3-delta}FeAs superconductors with different oxygen deficiencies have been successfully fabricated. It is found that the superconducting transition temperature drops down monotonically with the increase of oxygen deficiency. The diminishing of superconductivity is accompanied by the enhancement of residual resistivity, indicating an unraveled scattering effect induced by the oxygen deficiency. The highest superconducting transition temperature at about 40 K is achieved near the stoichiometrical sample Sr$_2$VO$_{3}$FeAs. Surprisingly, the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) shows that the vanadium has a "5+" valence state in the samples. The Hall effect measurements reveal that the density of charge carriers (electron-like here) varies qualitatively with the increase of oxygen deficiency. Magnetotransport measurements show that the superconducting transition changes from one-step-like shape at low fields to two-step-like one at high fields, indicating a high anisotropy.

Superconductivity at 15.6 K in Calcium-doped Tb_{1-x}Ca_xFeAsO: the structure requirement for achieving superconductivity in the hole-doped 1111 phase

Superconductivity at about 15.6 K was achieved in Tb_{1-x}Ca_xFeAsO by partially substituting Tb^{3+} with Ca^{2+} in the nominal doping region x = 0.40 \sim 0.50. A detailed investigation was carried out in a typical sample with doping level of x = 0.44. The upper critical field of this sample was estimated to be 77 Tesla from the magnetic field dependent resistivity data. The domination of hole-like charge carriers in the low-temperature region was confirmed by Hall effect measurements. The comparison between the calcium-doped sample Pr_{1-x}Ca_xFeAsO (non-superconductive) and the Strontium-doped sample Pr_{1-x}Sr_xFeAsO (superconductive) suggests that a lager ion radius of the doped alkaline-earth element compared with that of the rare-earth element may be a necessary requirement for achieving superconductivity in the hole-doped 1111 phase.

Transition of stoichiometricSr2VO3FeAs to a superconducting state at 37.2 K

The superconductor Sr4V2O6Fe2As2 with transition temperature at 37.2 K has been fabricated. It has a layered structure with the space group of p4/nmm, and with the lattice constants a = 3.9296Aand c = 15.6732A. The observed large diamagnetization signal and zero-resistance demonstrated the bulk superconductivity. The broadening of resistive transition was measured under different magnetic fields leading to the discovery of a rather high upper critical field. The results also suggest a large vortex liquid region which reflects high anisotropy of the system. The Hall effect measurements revealed dominantly electron-like charge carriers in this material. The superconductivity in the present system may be induced by oxygen deficiency or the multiple valence states of vanadium.

Specific-Heat Measurement of Residual Superconductivity in the Normal State of Underdoped Cuprate Superconductors

We have measured the magnetic field and temperature dependence of specific heat on $Bi_2Sr_{2-x}La_xCuO_{6+δ}$ single crystals in wide doping and temperature regions. The superconductivity related specific heat coefficient $γ_{sc}$ and entropy $S_{sc}$ are determined. It is found that $γ_{sc}$ has a hump-like anomaly at $T_c$ and behaves as a long tail which persists far into the normal state for the underdoped samples, but for the heavily overdoped samples the anomaly ends sharply just near $T_c$. Interestingly, we found that the entropy associated with superconductivity is roughly conserved when and only the long tail part in the normal state is taken into account for the underdoped samples, indicating the residual superconductivity above T$_c$.
