Observation of an unusual field dependent slow magnetic relaxation and two distinct transitions in a family of new complexes

An unusual field dependent slow magnetic relaxation and two distinct transitions were observed in a family of new rare earth-transition metal complexes, [Ln (bipy) (H$_{2}$O)$_{4}$ M(CN)$_{6}$] $\cdot $1.5 (bipy) $ \cdot $ 4H$_{2}$O (bipy = 2,2'-bipyridine; Ln = Gd$^{3+}$,Y$^{3+}$; M = Fe$ ^{3+}$, Co$^{3+}$). The novel magnetic relaxation, which is quite different from those in normal spin glasses and superparamagnets but very resembles qualitatively those in single-molecule magnet Mn$_{12}$-Ac even if they possess different structures, might be attributed to the presence of frustration that is incrementally unveiled by the external magnetic field. The two distinct transitions in [GdFe] were presumed from DC and AC susceptibility as well as heat capacity measurements.

Towards Bose-Einstein Condensation of Electron Pairs: Role of Schwinger Bosons

It can be shown that the bosonic degree of freedom of the tightly bound on-site electron pairs could be separated as Schwinger bosons. This is implemented by projecting the whole Hilbert space into the Hilbert subspace spanned by states of two kinds of Schwinger bosons (to be called binon and vacanon) subject to a constraint that these two kinds of bosonic quasiparticles cannot occupy the same site. We argue that a binon is actually a kind of quantum fluctuations of electron pairs, and a vacanon corresponds to a vacant state. These two bosonic quasiparticles may be responsible for the Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) of the system associated with electron pairs. These concepts are also applied to the attractive Hubbard model with strong coupling, showing that it is quite useful. The relevance of the present arguments to the existing theories associated with the BEC of electron pairs is briefly commented.

Off-Diagonal Long-Range Order in Bose Liquids: Irrotational Flow and Quantization of Circulation

On the basis of gauge invariance, it is proven in an elementary and straightforward manner, but without invoking any {\it ad hoc} assumption, that the existence of off-diagonal long-range order in one-particle reduced density matrix in Bose liquids implies both the irrotational flow in a simply connected region and the quantization of circulation in a multiply connected region, the two fundamental properties of a Bose superfluid. The origin for both is the phase coherence of condensate wave-functions. Some relevant issues are also addressed.

Universal Relation Connecting Fermi Surface to Symmetry of the Gap Function in BCS-Like Superconductors

A universal relation connecting Fermi surface (FS) to the symmetry of the gap function in BCS-like superconductors is derived. It is found that the shape of the FS can be deduced directly from the symmetry of the superconducting gap function, and is also influenced by the next nearest-neighbor overlapping. The application of this relation to cuprate superconductors is discussed. There is observed an interesting property that Luttinger's theorem perfectly holds for the tight-binding band while it is violated by inclusion of the next nearest-neighbor overlapping integral.

Quantum Statistical Mechanics of Ideal Gas Obeying Fractional Exclusion Statistics: A Systematic Study

The quantum statistical mechanics of an ideal gas with a general free-particle energy obeying fractional exclusion statistics are systematically investigated in arbitrary dimensions. The pressure relations, the relation between pressure and internal energy, the equation of state, as well as the thermodynamic properties are thoroughly discussed. Some novel results are obtained.

Symmetry Properties on Magnetization in the Hubbard Model at Finite Temperatures

By making use of some symmetry properties of the relevant Hamiltonian, two fundamental relations between the ferromagnetic magnetization and a spin correlation function are derived for the $d (=1,2,3)$-dimensional Hubbard model at finite temperatures. These can be viewed as a kind of Ward-Takahashi identities. The properties of the magnetization as a function of the applied field are discussed. The results thus obtained hold true for both repulsive and attractive on-site Coulomb interactions, and for arbitrary electron fillings.

Does the Hubbard Model Show $d_{x^2-y^2}$ Superconductivity?

It is rigorously shown that the two-dimensional Hubbard model with narrow bands (including next nearest-neighbor hopping, etc.) does not exhibit $d_{x^2 -y^2}$-wave pairing long-range order at any nonzero temperature. This kind of pairing long-range order will also be excluded at zero temperature if an excited energy gap opens in the charge excitation spectrum of the system. These results hold true for both repulsive and attractive Coulomb interactions and for any electron fillings, and are consistent with quantum Monto Carlo calculations.

Phase Separation in the Two-Dimensional Hubbard Model

By making use of known exact results and symmetry properties for the one-band Hubbard model, we show in a somewhat exact manner that there is no phase separation on a square lattice at arbitrary fillings at finite temperature for both attractive and repulsive on-site Coulomb interaction. This result is consistent with the quantum Monto Carlo calculation.

Magnetic and Pairing Correlations in Correlated Electron Systems

Magnetic and superconducting pairing correlation functions in a general class of Hubbard models, the t-J model and a single-band Hubbard model with additional bond-charge interaction are investigated, respectively. Some rigorous upper bounds of the corresponding correlation functions are obtained. It is found that the decay of the spin-spin correlation function with temperature in the general Hubbard models can not be slower than the squared inverse law at low temperatures and the inverse law at high temperatures, while the on-site pairing correlation function can not be slower than the inverse law. An upper bound for the average energy of the t-J model is found. The upper bounds for the spin-spin and the electron pairing correlation functions in the t-J model as well as in the Hubbard model with bond-charge interaction are also obtained. These bounds are expected to provide certain standards for approximate methods. In some special cases, these bounds rule out the possibility of corresponding magnetic and pairing long-range order.

Exact Ground States of One-Dimensional Quantum Systems: Matrix Product Approach

By using the so-called matrix-product ground state approach, a few one-dimensional quantum systems, including a frustrated spin-1/2 Heisenberg ladder, the ferromagnetic t-J-V model at half-filling, the antiferromagnetic $J_z-V$ at 2/3 filling and the antiferromagnetic $t-J_z-V$ model at half-filling, are solved exactly. The correlation functions in the ground states are calculated respectively. Some relevant results are also discussed.

Classical and Quantum Chaotic Behaviors of Two Colliding Harmonic Oscillators

We have systematically studied both classical and quantum chaotic behaviors of two colliding harmonic oscillators. The classical case falls in Kolmogorov-Arnold-Moser class. It is shown that there exists an energy threshold, above which the system becomes nonintegrable. For some values of the initial energy near the threshold, we have found that the ratio of frequencies of the two oscillators affects the Poincaré sections significantly. The largest Lyapunov character exponent depends linearly on the ratio of frequencies of the two oscillators away from the energy threshold in some chaotic regions, which shows that the chaotic behaviors of the system are mainly determined by the ratio. In the quantum case, for certain parameters, the distribution of the energy level spacings also varies with the ratio of frequencies of the two oscillators. The relation between the energy spectra and the ratio of frequencies of the two oscillators, the interaction constant, and the semi-classical quantization constant, is also investigated respectively.

Long-Range Correlation of Electron Pairs in the Hubbard Model at Finite Temperatures in Three Dimensions

We show that in the translation invariant case and in the antiferromagnetic phase, the reduced density matrix $ρ_2$ has no off-diagonal long-range order of on-site electron pairs for the single-band Hubbard model on a cubic lattice away from half filling at finite temperatures both for the positive coupling and for the negative coupling. In these cases the model can not give a mechanism for the superconductivity caused by the condensation of on-site electron pairs and the nearest-neighbor electron pairs.

Off-Diagonal Long-Range Order: Meissner Effect and Flux Quantization

There has been a proof by Sewell that the hypothesis of off-diagonal long-range order in the reduced density matrix $ρ_2$ implies the Meissner effect. We present in this note an elementary and straightforward proof that not only the Meissner effect but also the property of magnetic flux quantization follows from the hypothesis. It is explicitly shown that the two phenomena are closely related, and phase coherence is the origin for both.
