On the uniqueness of the foliation of spheres of constant mean curvature in asymptotically flat 3-manifolds

In this note we study constant mean curvature surfaces in asymptotically flat 3-manifolds. We prove that, in an asymptotically flat 3-manifold with positive mass, stable spheres of given constant mean curvature outside a fixed compact subset are unique. Therefore we are able to conclude that there is a unique foliation of stable spheres of constant mean curvature in an asymptotically flat 3-manifold with positive mass.

Bach-flat asymptotically locally Euclidean metrics

We obtain a volume growth and curvature decay result for various classes of complete, noncompact Riemannian metrics in dimension 4; in particular our method applies to anti-self-dual or Kahler metrics with zero scalar curvature, and metrics with harmonic curvature. Similar results are known for Einstein metrics, but our analysis differs from the Einstein case in that (1) we consider more generally a fourth order system in the metric, and (2) we do not assume any pointwise Ricci curvature bound.

The log term of Szego Kernel

In this paper, we study the relations between the log term of the Szegö kernel of the unit circle bundle of the dual line bundle of an ample line bundle over a compact Kählermanifold. We proved a local rigidity theorem. The result is related to the classical Ramadanov Conjecture.

Geometry of Kaehler metrics and holomorphic foliation by discs

The purpose of this paper is to establish a partial regularity theory on certain homogeneous complex Monge-Ampere equations. As consequences of this new theory, we prove the uniqueness of extremal Kaehler metrics and give an necessary condition for existence of extremal Kaehler metrics.

Moduli spaces of critical Riemannian metrics in dimension four

We obtain a compactness result for various classes of Riemannian metrics in dimension four; in particular our method applies to anti-self-dual metrics, Kahler metrics with constant scalar curvature, and metrics with harmonic curvature. With certain geometric assumptions, the moduli space can be compactified by adding metrics with orbifold singularities. Similar results were obtained previously for Einstein metrics, but our analysis differs substantially from the Einstein case in that we do not assume any pointwise Ricci curvature bound.

Algebraic and Analytic K-Stability

In this note we identify the leading terms of the (reduced) K-energy map with a universal linear combination of the principal and subdominant coefficients of the weight of the $mth$ Hilbert point. This shows that the weight $F_{1}(λ;X)$ introduced by Donaldson in [SKD02] is just the weight of the CM-polarisation.The equivalence between the CM-(semi)stability and the K-(semi) stability follows from this. Also, using our previous work, we are able to describe this subdominant coefficient in terms of the weights of some generalised Chow forms, under a multiplicity free hypothesis on the degeneration. This is accomplished by introducing a parameter dependent lift of the CM-polarisation, and letting this parameter tend to infinity. This could be thought of as a ``quantized'' version of the virtual bundle introduced in [Tian94].

A compactification of the moduli space of twisted holomorphic maps

We construct a compactification of the moduli space of twisted holomorphic maps with varying complex structure and bounded energy. For a given compact symplectic manifold $X$ with a compatible complex structure and a Hamiltonian action of $S^1$ with moment map $μ:X\to\imag\RR$, the moduli space which we compactify consists of equivalence classes of tuples $(C,P,A,ϕ)$, where $C$ is a smooth compact complex curve of fixed genus, $P$ is a principal $S^1$ bundle over $C$, $A$ is a connection on $P$ and $ϕ$ is a section of $P\times_{S^1}X$ satisfying $$\ov{\partial}_Aϕ=0,\qquad ι_{v}F_A+μ(ϕ)=c,$$ where $F_A$ is the curvature of $A$, $v$ is the restriction on $C$ of a volume form on the universal curve over $\oM_g$ and $c$ is a fixed constant. Two tuples $(C,P,A,ϕ)$ and $(C',P',A',ϕ')$ are equivalent if there is a morphism of bundles $ρ:P\to P'$ lifting a biholomorphism $C\to C'$ such that $ρ^*A'=A$ and $ρ^*ϕ'=ϕ$. The energy of $(C,P,A,ϕ)$ is $\|F_A\|_{L^2}^2+\|d_Aϕ\|_{L^2}^2 +\|μ(ϕ)-c\|_{L^2}^2$, and the topology of the moduli space is the natural one. We also incorporate marked points in the picture. There are two sources of non compactness. First, bubbling off phenomena, analogous to the one in Gromov--Witten theory. Second, degeneration of $C$ to nodal curves. In this case, there appears a phenomenon which is not present in Gromov--Witten: near the nodes, the section $ϕ$ may degenerate to a chain of gradient flow lines of $-\imagμ$.

Analysis of Geometric Stability

We identify the difference between the CM polarisation and the Chow polarisation on the ``Hilbert scheme''. As a consequence, we give a numerical criterion for the CM stability as in Mumfords' G.I.T.. Also, we write down an explicit formula for the generalised futaki invariant interms of weights and multiplicities of the associated degeneration.

A singularity removal theorem for Yang-Mills fields in higher dimensions

In four and higher dimensions, we show that any stationary admissible Yang-Mills field can be gauge transformed to a smooth field if the $L^2$ norm of the curvature is sufficiently small. There are three main ingredients. The first is Price's monotonicity formula, which allows us to assert that the curvature is small not only in the $L^2$ norm, but also in the Morrey norm $M_2^{n/2}$. The second ingredient is a new inductive (averaged radial) gauge construction and truncation argument which allows us to approximate a singular gauge as a weak limit of smooth gauges with curvature small in the Morrey norm. The second ingredient is variant of Uhlenbeck's lemma, allowing one to place a smooth connection into the Coulomb gauge whenever the Morrey norm of the curvature is small; This variant was also proved independently by Meyer and Riviere. It follows easily from this variant that a $W^{1,2}$-connection can be placed in the Coulomb gauge if it can be approximated by smooth connections whose curvatures have small Morrey norm.

Rigidity of Asymptotically Hyperboblic Manifolds

In this paper, we prove a rigidity theorem of asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds only under the assumptions on curvature. Its proof is based on analyzing asymptotic structures of such manifolds at infinity and a volume comparison theorem.

The Singular Set of 1-1 Integral Currents

We prove that 2 dimensional Integral currents (i.e. integer multiplicity 2 dimensional rectifiable currents) which are almost complex cycles in an almost complex manifold admitting locally a compatible symplectic form are smooth surfaces aside from isolated points and therefore are J-holomorphic curves.

On the holomorphicity of genus two Lefschetz fibrations

We prove that any genus-2 Lefschetz fibration without reducible fibers and with ``transitive monodromy'' is holomorphic. The latter condition comprises all cases where the number of singular fibers is not congruent to 0 modulo 40. An auxiliary statement of independent interest is the holomorphicity of symplectic surfaces in S^2-bundles over S^2, of relative degree up to 7 over the base, and of symplectic surfaces in CP^2 of degree up to 17.

Geometry and nonlinear analysis

Nonlinear analysis has played a prominent role in the recent developments in geometry and topology. The study of the Yang-Mills equation and its cousins gave rise to the Donaldson invariants and more recently, the Seiberg-Witten invariants. Those invariants have enabled us to prove a number of striking results for low dimensional manifolds, particularly, 4-manifolds. The theory of Gromov-Witten invariants was established by using solutions of the Cauchy-Riemann equation. These solutions are often refered as pseudo-holomorphic maps which are special minimal surfaces studied long in geometry. It is certainly not the end of applications of nonlinear partial differential equations to geometry. In this talk, we will discuss some recent progress on nonlinear partial differential equations in geometry. We will be selective, partly because of my own interest and partly because of recent applications of nonlinear equations. There are also talks in this ICM to cover some other topics of geometric analysis by R. Bartnik, B. Andrew, P. Li and X.X. Chen, etc.

Infinite geodesic rays in the space of Kahler potentials

In this paper we explore the connection between special degenerations of algebraic manifolds and geodesics in the space of Kahler metrics. We provide a new and general geometric construction of nontrivial solutions for the geodesic equation. We show how to associate to any special nontrivial degeneration a geodesic of inifite length.

Compactification of the moduli spaces of vortices and coupled vortices

Vortices and coupled vortices arise from Yang-Mills-Higgs theories and can be viewed as generalizations or analogues to Yang-Mills connections and, in particular, Hermitian-Yang-Mills connections. We proved an analytic compactification of the moduli spaces of vortices and coupled vortices on hermitian vector bundles over compact Kähler manifolds. In doing so we introduced the concept of ideal coupled vortices and characterized the singularities of ideal coupled vortices as well as Hermitian-Yang-Mills connections.

Ricci flow on Kaehler-Einstein surfaces

In this paper, we construct a set of new functionals of Ricci curvature on any Kaehler manifolds which are invariant under holomorphic transfermations in Kaehler Einstein manifolds and essentially decreasing under the Kaehler Ricci flow. Moreover, if the initial metric has non-negative bisectional curvature, using Tian's inequality, we can prove that each of the functionals has uniform lower bound along the flow which gives a set of integral estimates on curvature. Using this set of integral estimates, we are able to show the following theorem: Let M be a Kaehler-Einstein surface with positive scalar curvature. If the initial metric has nonnegative sectional curvature and positive somewhere, then the Kaehler-Ricci flow converges exponentially fast to a Kaehler-Einstein metric with constant bisectional curvature.

Ricci flow on Kaehler manifolds

In this paper, we announce the following results: Let M be a Kaehler-Einstein manifold with positive scalar curvature. If the initial metric has nonnegative bisectional curvature and positive at least at one point, then the Kähler-Ricci flow converges exponentially fast to a Kaehler-Einstein metric with constant bisectional curvature.
