Astrodynamical Space Test of Relativity using Optical Devices I (ASTROD I) - A class-M fundamental physics mission proposal for Cosmic Vision 2015-2025: 2010 Update

This paper on ASTROD I is based on our 2010 proposal submitted for the ESA call for class-M mission proposals, and is a sequel and an update to our previous paper [Experimental Astronomy 23 (2009) 491-527; designated as Paper I] which was based on our last proposal submitted for the 2007 ESA call. In this paper, we present our orbit selection with one Venus swing-by together with orbit simulation. In Paper I, our orbit choice is with two Venus swing-bys. The present choice takes shorter time (about 250 days) to reach the opposite side of the Sun. We also present a preliminary design of the optical bench, and elaborate on the solar physics goals with the radiation monitor payload. We discuss telescope size, trade-offs of drag-free sensitivities, thermal issues and present an outlook. ASTROD I is a planned interplanetary space mission with multiple goals. The primary aims are: to test General Relativity with an improvement in sensitivity of over 3 orders of magnitude, improving our understanding of gravity and aiding the development of a new quantum gravity theory; to measure key solar system parameters with increased accuracy, advancing solar physics and our knowledge of the solar system; and to measure the time rate of change of the gravitational constant with an order of magnitude improvement and the anomalous Pioneer acceleration, thereby probing dark matter and dark energy gravitationally. It is envisaged as the first in a series of ASTROD missions. ASTROD I will consist of one spacecraft carrying a telescope, four lasers, two event timers and a clock. Two-way, two-wavelength laser pulse ranging will be used between the spacecraft in a solar orbit and deep space laser stations on Earth, to achieve the ASTROD I goals.

A Three-Dimensional Model of Small Signal Free-Electron Lasers

Coherent electron cooling is an ultra-high-bandwidth form of stochastic cooling which utilizes the charge perturbation from Debye screening as a seed for a free-electron laser. The amplified and frequency-modulated signal that results from the free-electron laser process is then used to give an energy-dependent kick on the hadrons in a bunch. In this paper, we present a theoretical description of a high-gain free-electron laser with applications to a complete theoretical description of coherent electron cooling.

Superconductivity on the verge of Mott localization in ternary iron sulfide

We report the results of electrical and magnetic properties on two new compounds, K0.8Fe1.7S2 and K0.8Fe1.7SeS, both having similar structures to newly discovered superconducting K0.8Fe1.7Se2. K0.8Fe1.7S2 exhibits a semiconductor-like electrical property and undergoes an anti-ferromagnetic transition at about 260 K. Upon replacing half of S with Se, K0.8Fe1.7SSe becomes a superconductor at 25 K, implying the superconductivity evolves from a Mott AFM state in Fe-Se based superconductors.

Quenching of superconductivity by Co doping in K0.8Fe2Se2

We synthesized a series of K0.8Fe2-xCoxSe2 samples with nominal compositions 0\leq x\leq 0.035 and investigated their physical properties. The results show that the superconductivity in K0.8Fe2-xCoxSe2 is quenched down to 5 K by 0.5 at. % Co doping, the fastest quenching rate ever-reported. The role played here by Co is in contrast with the one in FeAs based superconductors where Co usually induces superconductivity from parent compounds. Such a rapid quenching favors a localized 3d model against the itinerant one for iron pnictide superconductors.

Statistical and dynamical fluctuations in the ratios of higher cumulants in relativistic heavy ion collisions

With the help of transport and statistical models, we find that the ratios of higher net-proton cumulants measured at RHIC are dominated by the statistical fluctuations. Future measurements should focus on the dynamical fluctuations, which are relevant to the underlying mechanisms of particle production, the critical phenomena in particular. We also demonstrate that a proton-antiproton correlation directly show if protons and antiprotons are emitted independently.

Non-photonic electron-hadron correlations and non-photonic electron $v_2$ at STAR/RHIC

Non-photonic electrons (when $p_T >$ 3 GeV/$c$) represent the directions of the parent heavy quarks, and their angular correlations with charged hadrons provide a unique tool to study the relative contributions from $D$ and B meson decays in p+p collisions, as well as the flavor-dependence of the energy loss mechanism in A+A collisions. We review the disentanglement of charm and bottom contributions to non-photonic electrons in p+p collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 200$ GeV at RHIC. B decay contribution is approximately 50$ at the electron transverse momentum of $p_{T} > 5$ GeV/$c$ from STAR results. Incorporating the energy loss information of non-photonic electrons, the result indicates a B meson suppression at high $p_T$ in heavy ion collisions. We also present non-photonic electron-hadron correlations in d+Au collisions as a baseline reference for the investigation of the heavy quark energy loss in A+A collisions. Heavy quark energy loss and heavy quark evolution in the QCD medium can lead to a finite "elliptic flow" parameter ($v_2$) of $D$ and $B$ mesons which can be studied through $v_2$ of non-photonic electrons. Preliminary $v_2$ measurements for non-photonic electrons are shown to be lower than $v_2$ of charged hadrons (or $K_S^0$, $Λ$) for 200 GeV Au+Au collisions.

Superconductivity in the iron selenide KxFe2Se2 (0 <= x <= 1)

We report the superconductivity at above 30 K in a new FeSe-layer compound K0.8Fe2Se2 (nominal composition) achieved by metal K intercalating in between FeSe layers. It is isostructural to BaFe2As2 and possesses the highest Tc for FeSe-layer materials so far under ambient pressure. Hall effect indicates the carriers are dominated by electron in this superconductor. We confirm that the observed superconductivity at above 30 K is due to this new FeSe-based 122 phase. Our results demonstrate that FeSe-layer materials are really remarkable superconductors via structure and carrier modulation.

Tunable Hybridization at Mid Zone and Anomalous Bloch-Zener Oscillations in Optical Waveguide Ladders

We have studied the optical oscillation and tunneling of light waves in optical waveguide ladders formed by two coupled planar optical waveguide arrays. For the band structure, a mid-zone gap is formed due to band hybridization and its wavenumber position can be tuned throughout the whole Brillouin zone, which is different from the Bragg gap. By imposing a gradient in the propagation constant in each array, Bloch-Zener oscillation (BZO) is realized with Zener tunneling between the bands occurring at mid zone, which is contrary to the common BZO with tunneling at the center or edge of the Brillouin zone. The occurrence of BZO is demonstrated by using the field-evolution analysis. The tunable hybridization at mid zone enhances the tunability of BZO in the optical waveguide ladders. This work is of general and fundamental importance in understanding the coherent phenomena in lattice structures.

Highlights from STAR: probing the early medium in heavy ion collisions

We present highlights of recent results from the STAR Collaboration at RHIC, focusing on the properties of the early medium created in heavy ion collisions. We emphasize the strangeness production including the observation of a hypernucleus (the hypertriton), the observation of reaction-plane-dependent angular correlation of charged particles searching for local strong parity violation effects in heavy ion collisions, and the evaluation of the medium viscosity from measurements of elliptic flow. We discuss STAR's plan for the "Critical Point Search" program at RHIC.

Approximating Scheduling Machines with Capacity Constraints

In the Scheduling Machines with Capacity Constraints problem, we are given k identical machines, each of which can process at most m_i jobs. M jobs are also given, where job j has a non-negative processing time length t_j >= 0. The task is to find a schedule such that the makespan is minimized and the capacity constraints are met. In this paper, we present a 3-approximation algorithm using an extension of Iterative Rounding Method introduced by Jain. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first attempt to apply Iterative Rounding Method to scheduling problem with capacity constraints.

Empirical Constraints on Parton Energy Loss in Nucleus-Nucleus Collisions at RHIC

We present empirical features of parton energy loss in nucleus-nucleus collisions at RHIC through studies of the spectra and nuclear modification factors ($R_{AA}$) for charged hadrons, neutral pions ($π^0$) and non-photonic electrons. The flat distribution of $R_{AA}$ at high transverse momentum ($p_{T}$) for a given collision centrality is consistent with a scenario where parton energy loss $Δp_{T}$ is proportional to $p_{T}$. The centrality dependence of the parton energy loss indicates the absence of path length dependence in the magnitude of energy loss. The lack of strong path length dependence suggests a dynamical picture where the dense partonic medium undergoes rapid expansion and the density of the medium falls rapidly in the first a few Fermi interval, which may be much shorter than the full path length. Implications of the empirical constraints on the parton energy loss will also be discussed.

Tunable photonic Bloch oscillations in electrically modulated photonic crystals

We exploit theoretically the occurrence and tunability of photonic Bloch oscillations (PBOs) in one-dimensional photonic crystals (PCs) containing nonlinear composites. Because of the enhanced third-order nonlinearity (Kerr type nonlinearity) of composites, photons undergo oscillations inside tilted photonic bands, which are achieved by the application of graded external pump electric fields on such PCs, varying along the direction perpendicular to the surface of layers. The tunability of PBOs (including amplitude and period) is readily achieved by changing the field gradient. With an appropriate graded pump AC or DC electric field, terahertz PBOs can appear and cover a terahertz band in electromagnetic spectrum.

Non-photonic electron-hadron correlations at STAR

We present STAR's measurements of azimuthal correlations between non-photonic electrons and charged hadrons in p+p, Cu+Cu and Au+Au collisions at 200 GeV. In p+p collisions, from the non-photonic e-h correlation we have extracted the relative B meson semi-leptonic decay contributions to non-photonic electrons up to electron $p_t \sim 9$ GeV/$c$. In central Cu+Cu and Au+Au collisions where a dense medium is created, we find that the e-h correlation on the away side of the trigger non-photonic electron has been modified in comparison with the expectation from PYTHIA simulations.

Elliptic flow in the Gaussian model of eccentricity fluctuations

We discuss a specific model of elliptic flow fluctuations due to Gaussian fluctuations in the initial spatial $x$ and $y$ eccentricity components $\left\{\mean{(σ_y^2-σ_x^2)/(σ_x^2+σ_y^2)}, \mean{2σ_{xy}/(σ_x^2+σ_y^2)} \right\}$. We find that in this model $\vfour$, elliptic flow determined from 4-particle cumulants, exactly equals the average flow value in the reaction plane coordinate system, $\mean{v_{RP}}$, the relation which, in an approximate form, was found earlier by Bhalerao and Ollitrault in a more general analysis, but under the same assumption that $v_2$ is proportional to the initial system eccentricity. We further show that in the Gaussian model all higher order cumulants are equal to $\vfour$. Analysis of the distribution in the magnitude of the flow vector, the $Q-$distribution, reveals that it is totally defined by two parameters, $\vtwo$, the flow from 2-particle cumulants, and $\vfour$, thus providing equivalent information compared to the method of cumulants. The flow obtained from the $Q-$distribution is again $\vfour=\mean{v_{RP}}$.

A method for determining event-by-event elliptic flow fluctuations based on the first-order event plane in heavy-ion collisions

A new method is presented for determining event-by-event fluctuations of elliptic flow, $v_2$, using first-order event planes. By studying the event-by-event distributions of $v_2$ observables and first-order event-plane observables, average flow $\avg{v_2}$ and event-by-event flow fluctuations can be separately determined, making appropriate allowance for the effects of finite multiplicity and non-flow. The method has been tested with Monte Carlo simulations. The connection between flow fluctuations and fluctuations of the initial-state participant eccentricity is discussed.

Incident-energy and system-size dependence of directed flow

We present STAR's measurements of directed flow for charged hadrons in Au+Au and Cu+Cu collisions at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}} = 200$ GeV and 62.4 GeV, as a function of pseudorapidity, transverse momentum and centrality. We find that directed flow depends on the incident energy, but not on the system size. We extend the validity of limiting fragmentation hypothesis to different collision systems.

Some spherical uniqueness theorems for multiple trigonometric series

We prove that if a multiple trigonometric series is spherically Abel summable everywhere to an everywhere finite function $f(x)$ which is bounded below by an integrable function, then the series is the Fourier series of $f(x)$ if the coefficients of the multiple trigonometric series satisfy a mild growth condition. As a consequence, we show that if a multiple trigonometric series is spherically convergent everywhere to an everywhere finite integrable function $f(x)$, then the series is the Fourier series of $f(x)$. We also show that a singleton is a set of uniqueness. These results are generalizations of a recent theorem of J. Bourgain and some results of V. Shapiro.
