A Restarted Large-Scale Spectral Clustering with Self-Guiding and Block Diagonal Representation

Spectral clustering is one of the most popular unsupervised machine learning methods. Constructing similarity matrix is crucial to this type of method. In most existing works, the similarity matrix is computed once for all or is updated alternatively. However, the former is difficult to reflect comprehensive relationships among data points, and the latter is time-consuming and is even infeasible for large-scale problems. In this work, we propose a restarted clustering framework with self-guiding and block diagonal representation. An advantage of the strategy is that some useful clustering information obtained from previous cycles could be preserved as much as possible. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work that applies restarting strategy to spectral clustering. The key difference is that we reclassify the samples in each cycle of our method, while they are classified only once in existing methods. To further release the overhead, we introduce a block diagonal representation with Nyström approximation for constructing the similarity matrix. Theoretical results are established to show the rationality of inexact computations in spectral clustering. Comprehensive experiments are performed on some benchmark databases, which show the superiority of our proposed algorithms over many state-of-the-art algorithms for large-scale problems. Specifically, our framework has a potential boost for clustering algorithms and works well even using an initial guess chosen randomly.

Gravitational collapse and accretion flows in the hub filament system G323.46-0.08

We studied the hub filament system G323.46-0.08 based on archival molecular line data from the SEDIGISM 13CO survey and infrared data from the GLIMPSE, MIPS, and Hi-GAL surveys. G323.46-0.08 consists of three filaments, F-north, F-west, and F-south, that converge toward the central high_mass clump AGAL 323.459-0.079. F-west and Part 1 of the F-south show clear large-scale velocity gradients 0.28 and 0.44 km s-1 pc-1, respectively. They seem to be channeling materials into AGAL 323.459-0.079. The minimum accretion rate was estimated to be 1216 M Myr-1. A characteristic V-shape appears around AGAL 323.459-0.079 in the PV diagram, which traces the accelerated gas motions under gravitational collapse. This has also been supported by model fitting results. All three filaments are supercritical and they have fragmented into many dense clumps. The seesaw patterns near most dense clumps in the PV diagram suggests that mass accretion also occurs along the filament toward the clumps. Our results show that filamentary accretion flows appear to be an important mechanism for supplying the materials necessary to form the central high-mass clump AGAL 323.459-0.079 and to propel the star forming activity taking place therein.

On convergence of the generalized Lanczos trust-region method for trust-region subproblems

The generalized Lanczos trust-region (GLTR) method is one of the most popular approaches for solving large-scale trust-region subproblem (TRS). Recently, Jia and Wang [Z. Jia and F. Wang, \emph{SIAM J. Optim., 31 (2021), pp. 887--914}] considered the convergence of this method and established some {\it a prior} error bounds on the residual, the solution and the Largrange multiplier. In this paper, we revisit the convergence of the GLTR method and try to improve these bounds. First, we establish a sharper upper bound on the residual. Second, we give a new bound on the distance between the approximation and the exact solution, and show that the convergence of the approximation has nothing to do with the associated spectral separation. Third, we present some non-asymptotic bounds for the convergence of the Largrange multiplier, and define a factor that plays an important role on the convergence of the Largrange multiplier. Numerical experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of our theoretical results.

Two-Way Semantic Transmission of Images without Feedback

As a competitive technology for 6G, semantic communications can significantly improve transmission efficiency. However, many existing semantic communication systems require information feedback during the training coding process, resulting in a significant communication overhead. In this article, we consider a two-way semantic communication (TW-SC) system, where information feedback can be omitted by exploiting the weight reciprocity in the transceiver. Particularly, the channel simulator and semantic transceiver are implemented on both TW-SC nodes and the channel distribution is modeled by a conditional generative adversarial network. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed TW-SC system performs closing to the state-of-the-art one-way semantic communication systems but requiring no feedback between the transceiver in the training process.

Power Adaptation for Suborbital Downlink with Stochastic Satellites Interference

This paper investigates downlink power adaptation for the suborbital node in suborbital-ground communication systems, which are subject to extremely high reliability and ultra-low latency communications requirements. The problem is formulated as a power threshold-minimization problem, where interference from satellites is modeled as an accumulation of stochastic point processes on different orbit planes, and hybrid beamforming (HBF) is considered. To ensure Quality of Service (QoS) constraints, the finite blocklength regime is adopted. Numerical results show that the required transmit power of the suborbital node decreases as the elevation angle at the receiving station increases.

A block Lanczos method for large-scale quadratic minimization problems with orthogonality constraints

Quadratic minimization problems with orthogonality constraints (QMPO) play an important role in many applications of science and engineering. However, some existing methods may suffer from low accuracy or heavy workload for large-scale QMPO. Krylov subspace methods are popular for large-scale optimization problems. In this work, we propose a block Lanczos method for solving the large-scale QMPO. In the proposed method, the original problem is projected into a small-sized one, and the Riemannian Trust-Region method is employed to solve the reduced QMPO. Convergence results on the optimal solution, the optimal objective function value, the multiplier and the KKT error are established. Moreover, we give the convergence speed of optimal solution, and show that if the block Lanczos process terminates, then an exact KKT solution is derived. Numerical experiments illustrate the numerical behavior of the proposed algorithm, and demonstrate that it is more powerful than many state-of-the-art algorithms for large-scale quadratic minimization problems with orthogonality constraints.

Channel Estimation for RIS-Aided Multi-User mmWave Systems with Uniform Planar Arrays

In this paper, we adopt a three-stage based uplink channel estimation protocol with reduced pilot overhead for an reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided multi-user (MU) millimeter wave (mmWave) communication system, in which both the base station (BS) and the RIS are equipped with a uniform planar array (UPA). Specifically, in Stage I, the channel state information (CSI) of a typical user is estimated. To address the power leakage issue for the common angles-of-arrival (AoAs) estimation in this stage, we develop a low-complexity one-dimensional search method. In Stage II, a re-parameterized common BS-RIS channel is constructed with the estimated information from Stage I to estimate other users' CSI. In Stage III, only the rapidly varying channel gains need to re-estimated. Furthermore, the proposed method can be extended to multi-antenna UPA-type users, by decomposing the estimation of a multi-antenna channel with $J$ scatterers into estimating $J$ single-scatterer channels for a virtual single-antenna user. An orthogonal matching pursuit (OMP)-based method is proposed to estimate the angles-of-departure (AoDs) at the users. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm significantly achieves high channel estimation accuracy, which approaches the genie-aided upper bound in the high SNR regime.

Incorporating Transformer Designs into Convolutions for Lightweight Image Super-Resolution

In recent years, the use of large convolutional kernels has become popular in designing convolutional neural networks due to their ability to capture long-range dependencies and provide large receptive fields. However, the increase in kernel size also leads to a quadratic growth in the number of parameters, resulting in heavy computation and memory requirements. To address this challenge, we propose a neighborhood attention (NA) module that upgrades the standard convolution with a self-attention mechanism. The NA module efficiently extracts long-range dependencies in a sliding window pattern, thereby achieving similar performance to large convolutional kernels but with fewer parameters. Building upon the NA module, we propose a lightweight single image super-resolution (SISR) network named TCSR. Additionally, we introduce an enhanced feed-forward network (EFFN) in TCSR to improve the SISR performance. EFFN employs a parameter-free spatial-shift operation for efficient feature aggregation. Our extensive experiments and ablation studies demonstrate that TCSR outperforms existing lightweight SISR methods and achieves state-of-the-art performance. Our codes are available at \url{https://github.com/Aitical/TCSR}.

ESIE-BERT: Enriching Sub-words Information Explicitly with BERT for Joint Intent Classification and SlotFilling

Natural language understanding (NLU) has two core tasks: intent classification and slot filling. The success of pre-training language models resulted in a significant breakthrough in the two tasks. One of the promising solutions called BERT can jointly optimize the two tasks. We note that BERT-based models convert each complex token into multiple sub-tokens by wordpiece algorithm, which generates a mismatch between the lengths of the tokens and the labels. This leads to BERT-based models do not do well in label prediction which limits model performance improvement. Many existing models can be compatible with this issue but some hidden semantic information is discarded in the fine-tuning process. We address the problem by introducing a novel joint method on top of BERT which explicitly models the multiple sub-tokens features after wordpiece tokenization, thereby contributing to the two tasks. Our method can well extract the contextual features from complex tokens by the proposed sub-words attention adapter (SAA), which preserves overall utterance information. Additionally, we propose an intent attention adapter (IAA) to obtain the full sentence features to aid users to predict intent. Experimental results confirm that our proposed model is significantly improved on two public benchmark datasets. In particular, the slot filling F1 score is improved from 96.1 to 98.2 (2.1% absolute) on the Airline Travel Information Systems (ATIS) dataset.

BotSIM: An End-to-End Bot Simulation Framework for Commercial Task-Oriented Dialog Systems

We present BotSIM, a data-efficient end-to-end Bot SIMulation toolkit for commercial text-based task-oriented dialog (TOD) systems. BotSIM consists of three major components: 1) a Generator that can infer semantic-level dialog acts and entities from bot definitions and generate user queries via model-based paraphrasing; 2) an agenda-based dialog user Simulator (ABUS) to simulate conversations with the dialog agents; 3) a Remediator to analyze the simulated conversations, visualize the bot health reports and provide actionable remediation suggestions for bot troubleshooting and improvement. We demonstrate BotSIM's effectiveness in end-to-end evaluation, remediation and multi-intent dialog generation via case studies on two commercial bot platforms. BotSIM's "generation-simulation-remediation" paradigm accelerates the end-to-end bot evaluation and iteration process by: 1) reducing manual test cases creation efforts; 2) enabling a holistic gauge of the bot in terms of NLU and end-to-end performance via extensive dialog simulation; 3) improving the bot troubleshooting process with actionable suggestions. A demo of our system can be found at https://tinyurl.com/mryu74cd and a demo video at https://youtu.be/qLi5iSoly30. We have open-sourced the toolkit at https://github.com/salesforce/botsim

Fractal dimension of potential singular points set in the Navier-Stokes equations under supercritical regularity

The main objective of this paper is to answer the questions posed by Robinson and Sadowski [21, p. 505, Comm. Math. Phys., 2010]{[RS3]} for the Navier-Stokes equations. Firstly, we prove that the upper box dimension of the potential singular points set $\mathcal{S}$ of suitable weak solution $u$ belonging in $ L^{q}(0,T;L^{p}(\mathbb{R}^{3}))$ for $1\leq\frac{2}{q}+\frac{ 3}{p}\leq\frac32$ with $2\leq q<\infty$ and $2<p<\infty$ is at most $\max\{p,q\}(\frac{2}{q}+\frac{ 3}{p}-1)$ in this system. Secondly, it is shown that $1-2 s$ dimension Hausdorff measure of potential singular points set of suitable weak solutions satisfying $ u\in L^{2}(0,T;\dot{H}^{s+1}(\mathbb{R}^{3}))$ for $0\leq s\leq\frac12$ is zero, whose proof relies on Caffarelli-Silvestre's extension. Inspired by Baker-Wang's recent work [1], this further allows us to discuss the Hausdorff dimension of potential singular points set of suitable weak solutions if the gradient of the velocity under some supercritical regularity.

GLaMa: Joint Spatial and Frequency Loss for General Image Inpainting

The purpose of image inpainting is to recover scratches and damaged areas using context information from remaining parts. In recent years, thanks to the resurgence of convolutional neural networks (CNNs), image inpainting task has made great breakthroughs. However, most of the work consider insufficient types of mask, and their performance will drop dramatically when encountering unseen masks. To combat these challenges, we propose a simple yet general method to solve this problem based on the LaMa image inpainting framework, dubbed GLaMa. Our proposed GLaMa can better capture different types of missing information by using more types of masks. By incorporating more degraded images in the training phase, we can expect to enhance the robustness of the model with respect to various masks. In order to yield more reasonable results, we further introduce a frequency-based loss in addition to the traditional spatial reconstruction loss and adversarial loss. In particular, we introduce an effective reconstruction loss both in the spatial and frequency domain to reduce the chessboard effect and ripples in the reconstructed image. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our method can boost the performance over the original LaMa method for each type of mask on FFHQ, ImageNet, Places2 and WikiArt dataset. The proposed GLaMa was ranked first in terms of PSNR, LPIPS and SSIM in the NTIRE 2022 Image Inpainting Challenge Track 1 Unsupervised.

Converse: A Tree-Based Modular Task-Oriented Dialogue System

Creating a system that can have meaningful conversations with humans to help accomplish tasks is one of the ultimate goals of Artificial Intelligence (AI). It has defined the meaning of AI since the beginning. A lot has been accomplished in this area recently, with voice assistant products entering our daily lives and chat bot systems becoming commonplace in customer service. At first glance there seems to be no shortage of options for dialogue systems. However, the frequently deployed dialogue systems today seem to all struggle with a critical weakness - they are hard to build and harder to maintain. At the core of the struggle is the need to script every single turn of interactions between the bot and the human user. This makes the dialogue systems more difficult to maintain as the tasks become more complex and more tasks are added to the system. In this paper, we propose Converse, a flexible tree-based modular task-oriented dialogue system. Converse uses an and-or tree structure to represent tasks and offers powerful multi-task dialogue management. Converse supports task dependency and task switching, which are unique features compared to other open-source dialogue frameworks. At the same time, Converse aims to make the bot building process easy and simple, for both professional and non-professional software developers. The code is available at https://github.com/salesforce/Converse.

Effectively Using Long and Short Sessions for Multi-Session-based Recommendations

It is not accurate to make recommendations only based one single current session. Therefore, multi-session-based recommendation(MSBR) is a solution for the problem. Compared with the previous MSBR models, we have made three improvements in this paper. First, the previous work choose to use all the history sessions of the user and/or of his similar users. When the user's current interest changes greatly from the past, most of these sessions can only have negative impacts. Therefore, we select a large number of randomly chosen sessions from the dataset as candidate sessions to avoid over depending on history data. Then we only choose to use the most similar sessions to get the most useful information while reduce the noise caused by dissimilar sessions. Second, in real-world datasets, short sessions account for a large proportion. The RNN often used in previous work is not suitable to process short sessions, because RNN only focuses on the sequential relationship, which we find is not the only relationship between items in short sessions. So, we designed a more suitable method named GAFE based on attention to process short sessions. Third, Although there are few long sessions, they can not be ignored. Not like previous models, which simply process long sessions in the same way as short sessions, we propose LSIS, which can split the interest of long sessions, to make better use of long sessions. Finally, to help recommendations, we also have considered users' long-term interests captured by a multi-layer GRU. Considering the four points above, we built the model ENIREC. Experiments on two real-world datasets show that the comprehensive performance of ENIREC is better than other existing models.

Partial regularity of suitable weak solutions of the model arising in amorphous molecular beam epitaxy

In this paper, we are concerned with the precise relationship between the Hausdorff dimension of possible singular point set $\mathcal{S}$ of suitable weak solutions and the parameter $α$ in the nonlinear term in the following parabolic equation $$h_t+h_{xxxx}+\partial_{xx}|h_x|^α=f.$$ It is shown that when $5/3\leqα<7/3$, the $\frac{3α-5}{α-1}$-dimensional parabolic Hausdorff measure of $\mathcal{S}$ is zero, which generalizes the recent corresponding work of Ozánski and Robinson in [31,SIAM J. Math. Anal. 51: 228--255, 2019] for $α=2$ and $f=0$. The same result is valid for a 3D modified Navier-Stokes system.

Robust topology optimization of structures under uncertain propagation of imprecise stochastic-based uncertain field

This study introduces a novel computational framework for Robust Topology Optimization (RTO) considering imprecise random field parameters. Unlike the worst-case approach, the present method provides upper and lower bounds for the mean and standard deviation of compliance as well as the optimized topological layouts of a structure for various scenarios. In the proposed approach, the imprecise random field variables are determined utilizing parameterized p-boxes with different confidence intervals. The Karhunen-Loève (K-L) expansion is extended to provide a spectral description of the imprecise random field. The linear superposition method in conjunction with a linear combination of orthogonal functions is employed to obtain explicit mathematical expressions for the first and second order statistical moments of the structural compliance. Then, an interval sensitivity analysis is carried out, applying the Orthogonal Similarity Transformation (OST) method with the boundaries of each of the intermediate variable searched efficiently at every iteration using a Combinatorial Approach (CA). Finally, the validity, accuracy, and applicability of the work are rigorously checked by comparing the outputs of the proposed approach with those obtained using the particle swarm optimization (PSO) and Quasi-Monte-Carlo Simulation (QMCS) methods. Three different numerical examples with imprecise random field loads are presented to show the effectiveness and feasibility of the study.

Online MAP Inference and Learning for Nonsymmetric Determinantal Point Processes

In this paper, we introduce the online and streaming MAP inference and learning problems for Non-symmetric Determinantal Point Processes (NDPPs) where data points arrive in an arbitrary order and the algorithms are constrained to use a single-pass over the data as well as sub-linear memory. The online setting has an additional requirement of maintaining a valid solution at any point in time. For solving these new problems, we propose algorithms with theoretical guarantees, evaluate them on several real-world datasets, and show that they give comparable performance to state-of-the-art offline algorithms that store the entire data in memory and take multiple passes over it.

HI mapping of the Leo Triplet: Morphologies and kinematics of tails and bridges

A fully-sampled and hitherto highest resolution and sensitivity observation of neutral hydrogen (HI) in the Leo Triplet (NGC 3628, M 65/NGC 3623, and M 66/NGC 3627) reveals six HI structures beyond the three galaxies. We present detailed results of the morphologies and kinematics of these structures, which can be used for future simulations. In particular, we detect a two-arm structure in the plume of NGC 3628 for the first time, which can be explained by a tidal interaction model. The optical counterpart of the plume is mainly associated with the southern arm. The connecting part (base) of the plume (directed eastwards) with NGC 3628 is located at the blueshifted (western) side of NGC 3628. Two bases appear to be associated with the two arms of the plume. A clump with reversed velocity gradient (relative to the velocity gradient of M 66) and a newly detected tail, i.e. M 66SE, is found in the southeast of M 66. We suspect that M 66SE represents gas from NGC 3628 which was captured by M 66 in the recent interaction between the two galaxies. Meanwhile gas is falling toward M 66, resulting in features already previously observed in the southeastern part of M 66, e.g. large line widths and double peaks. An upside-down `Y'-shaped HI gas component (M 65S) is detected in the south of M 65 which suggests that M 65 may also have been involved in the interaction. We strongly encourage modern hydrodynamical simulations of this interacting group of galaxies to reveal the origin of the gaseous debris surrounding all three galaxies.
