The Tianlin Mission: a 6m UV/Opt/IR space telescope to explore the habitable worlds and the universe

[Abridged] It is expected that the ongoing and future space-borne planet survey missions including TESS, PLATO, and Earth 2.0 will detect thousands of small to medium-sized planets via the transit technique, including over a hundred habitable terrestrial rocky planets. To conduct a detailed study of these terrestrial planets, particularly the cool ones with wide orbits, the exoplanet community has proposed various follow-up missions. The currently proposed ESA mission ARIEL is capable of characterization of planets down to warm super-Earths mainly using transmission spectroscopy. The NASA 6m UV/Opt/NIR mission proposed in the Astro2020 Decadal Survey may further tackle down to habitable rocky planets, and is expected to launch around 2045. In the meanwhile, China is funding a concept study of a 6-m class space telescope named Tianlin (A UV/Opt/NIR Large Aperture Space Telescope) that aims to start its operation within the next 10-15 years and last for 5+ years. Tianlin will be primarily aimed to the discovery and characterization of rocky planets in the habitable zones (HZ) around nearby stars and to search for potential biosignatures mainly using the direct imaging method. Transmission and emission spectroscopy at moderate to high resolution will be carried out as well on a population of exoplanets to strengthen the understanding of the formation and evolution of exoplanets. It will also carry out in-depth studies of the cosmic web and early galaxies, and constrain the nature of the dark matter and dark energy. We describe briefly the primary scientific motivations and main technical considerations based on our preliminary simulation results. We find that a monolithic off-axis space telescope with a primary mirror diameter larger than 6m equipped with a high contrast chronograph can identify water in the atmosphere of a habitable-zone Earth-like planet around a Sun-like star.

Beyond spectroscopy. II. Stellar parameters for over twenty million stars in the northern sky from SAGES DR1 and Gaia DR3

We present precise photometric estimates of stellar parameters, including effective temperature, metallicity, luminosity classification, distance, and stellar age, for nearly 26 million stars using the methodology developed in the first paper of this series, based on the stellar colors from the Stellar Abundances and Galactic Evolution Survey (SAGES) DR1 and Gaia EDR3. The optimal design of stellar-parameter sensitive $uv$ filters by SAGES has enabled us to determine photometric-metallicity estimates down to $-3.5$, similar to our previous results with the SkyMapper Southern Survey (SMSS), yielding a large sample of over five million metal-poor (MP; [Fe/H]$\le -1.0$) stars and nearly one million very metal-poor (VMP; [Fe/H]$\le -2.0$) stars. The typical precision is around $0.1$ dex for both dwarf and giant stars with [Fe/H]$>-1.0$, and 0.15-0.25/0.3-0.4 dex for dwarf/giant stars with [Fe/H]$<-1.0$. Using the precise parallax measurements and stellar colors from Gaia, effective temperature, luminosity classification, distance and stellar age are further derived for our sample stars. This huge data set in the Northern sky from SAGES, together with similar data in the Southern sky from SMSS, will greatly advance our understanding of the Milky Way, in particular its formation and evolution.

The Stellar Abundances and Galactic Evolution Survey (SAGES) -- -- I. General Description and the First Data Release (DR1)

The Stellar Abundances and Galactic Evolution Survey (SAGES) of the northern sky is a specifically-designed multi-band photometric survey aiming to provide reliable stellar parameters with accuracy comparable to those from low-resolution optical spectra. It was carried out with the 2.3-m Bok telescope of Steward Observatory and three other telescopes. The observations in the $u_s$ and $v_s$ passband produced over 36,092 frames of images in total, covering a sky area of $\sim9960$ degree$^2$. The median survey completeness of all observing fields for the two bands are of $u_{\rm s}=20.4$ mag and $v_s=20.3$ mag, respectively, while the limiting magnitudes with signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) of 100 are $u_s\sim17$ mag and $v_s\sim18$ mag, correspondingly. We combined our catalog with the data release 1 (DR1) of the first of Panoramic Survey Telescope And Rapid Response System (Pan-STARRS1, PS1) catalog, and obtained a total of 48,553,987 sources which have at least one photometric measurement in each of the SAGES $u_s$ and $v_s$ and PS1 $grizy$ passbands, which is the DR1 of SAGES and it will be released in our paper. We compare our $gri$ point-source photometry with those of PS1 and found an RMS scatter of $\sim2$% in difference of PS1 and SAGES for the same band. We estimated an internal photometric precision of SAGES to be on the order of $\sim1$%. Astrometric precision is better than $0^{\prime\prime}.2$ based on comparison with the DR1 of Gaia mission. In this paper, we also describe the final end-user database, and provide some science applications.

The Spectacular Tidal Tails of Globular Cluster M3 (NGC 5272)

We provide a detailed analysis on tidal tails of the globular cluster M3 (NGC 5272). We first discover clear extra-tidal structures with slight S-shape near the cluster. This inspires us to examine the existence of its long tidal tails. We highlight potential stream stars using proper motions (PMs) of a model stream combined with the cluster's locus in a color-magnitude diagram (CMD). A 35 deg long leading tail and a 21 deg long trailing tail are successfully detected at the same time. Their corresponding overdensities can be recognized in CMD and PM space after subtracting background. We estimate stream width, star number density and surface brightness for both tails, as well as the distance variation along the entire stream. We then verify the connection of M3 and the Svöl stream. Finally, we tabulate 11 member stars belonging to the M3 tidal stream with available spectroscopic observations.

A Catalog of Distance Determinations for the LAMOST DR8 K Giants in the Galactic Halo

We present a catalog of distances for 19544 K giants drawn from LAMOST DR8. Most of them are located in the halo of the Milky Way up to ~120~kpc. There are 15% K giants without SDSS photometry, for which we supplements with Pan-STARRS1 (PS1) photometry calibrated to SDSS photometric system. The possible contamination of the red clumps/horizontal branch are removed according to metallicities and colors before the distance determination. Combining the LAMOST spectroscopic metallicities with the SDSS/PS1 photometry, we estimate the absolute magnitudes in SDSS $r-$band, the distance moduli, and the corresponding uncertainties through an Bayesian approach devised by Xue et al. (2014) for the SEGUE halo K-giants. The typical distance precision is about 11%. The stars in the catalog lie in a region of 4-126 kpc from the Galactic center, of which with 6, 320 stars beyond 20 kpc and 273 stars beyond 50 kpc, forming the largest spectroscopic sample of distant tracers in the Milky Way halo so far.

Detection of rubidium and samarium in the atmosphere of the ultra-hot Jupiter MASCARA-4b

Ultra-hot Jupiters (UHJs) possess the most extreme environments among various types of exoplanets, making them ideal laboratories to study the chemical composition and kinetics properties of exoplanet atmosphere with high-resolution spectroscopy (HRS). It has the advantage of resolving the tiny Doppler shift and weak signal from exoplanet atmosphere and has helped to detect dozens of heavy elements in UHJs including KELT-9b, WASP-76b, WASP-121b. MASCARA-4b is a 2.8-day UHJ with an equilibrium temperature of $\sim2250$ K, which is expected to contain heavy elements detectable with VLT. In this letter, we present a survey of atoms/ions in the atmosphere of the MASCARA-4b, using the two VLT/ESPRESSO transits data. Cross-correlation analyses are performed on the obtained transmission spectra at each exposure with the template spectra generated by petitRADTRANS for atoms/ions from element Li to U. We confirm the previous detection of Mg, Ca, Cr and Fe and report the detection of Rb, Sm, Ti+ and Ba+ with peak signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) $>$ 5. We report a tentative detection of Sc+, with peak SNRs $\sim$6 but deviating from the estimated position. The most interesting discovery is the first-time detection of elements Rb and Sm in an exoplanet. Rb is an alkaline element like Na and K, while Sm is the first lanthanide series element and is by far the heaviest one detected in exoplanets. Detailed modeling and acquiring more data are required to yield abundance ratios of the heavy elements and to understand better the common presence of them in UHJ's atmospheres.

Detection of TiO and VO in the atmosphere of WASP-121b and Evidence for its temporal variation

We report the transit observations of the ultra hot Jupiter WASP-121b using the Goodman High Throughput Spectrograph (GHTS) at the 4-meter ground-based telescope Southern Astrophysical Research Telescope (SOAR), covering the wavelength range $502-900$ nm. By dividing the target and reference star into 19 spectroscopic passbands and applying differential spectrophotometry, we derive spectroscopic transit light curves and fit them using Gaussian process framework to determine transit depths for every passbands. The obtained optical transmission spectrum shows a steep increased slope toward the blue wavelength, which seems to be too steep to be accounted for by the Rayleigh scattering alone. We note that the transmission spectrum from this work and other works differ obviously from each other, which was pointed out previously by \citet{Wilson2021} as evidence for temporal atmospheric variation. We perform a free chemistry retrieval analysis on the optical transmission spectra from this work and the literature HST/WFC3 NIR spectrum. We determine TiO, VO and H$_{2}$O with abundances of $-5.95_{-0.42}^{+0.47}$ dex, $-6.72_{-1.79}^{+0.51}$ dex, and $-4.13_{-0.46}^{+0.63}$ dex, respectively. We compare the abundances of all these three molecules derived from this work and previous works, and find that they are not consistent with each other, indicating the chemical compositions of the terminator region may change over long timescales. Future multi-epoch and high-precision transit observations are required to further confirm this phenomena. We note that when combining the transmission spectra in the optical and in NIR in retrieval analysis, the abundances of V and VO, the NIR-to-optical offset and the cloud deck pressure may be coupled with each other.

Thermal Emission from the hot Jupiter WASP-103b in J and Ks Bands

Hot Jupiters, particularly those with temperature higher than 2000 K are the best sample of planets that allow in-depth characterization of their atmospheres. We present here a thermal emission study of the ultra hot Jupiter WASP-103 b observed in two secondary eclipses with CFHT/WIRCam in J and Ks bands. By means of high precision differential photometry, we determine eclipse depths in J and Ks to an accuracy of 220 and 270 ppm, which are combined with the published HST/WFC3 and Spitzer data to retrieve a joint constraints on the properties of WASP-103 b dayside atmosphere. We find that the atmosphere is best fit with a thermal inversion layer included. The equilibrium chemistry retrieval indicates an enhanced C/O (1.35$^{+0.14}_{-0.17}$) and a super metallicity with [Fe/H]$=2.19^{+0.51}_{-0.63}$ composition. Given the near-solar metallicity of WASP-103 of [Fe/H]=0.06, this planet seems to be $\sim$100 more abundant than its host star. The free chemistry retrieval analysis yields a large abundance of FeH, H$^{-}$, CO$_2$ and CH$_4$. Additional data of better accuracy from future observations of JWST should provide better constraint of the atmospheric properties of WASP-103b.

Tentative detection of titanium oxide in the atmosphere of WASP-69 b with a 4m ground-based telescope

Transiting planets provide unique opportunities for the atmospheric characterization of exoplanets as they can reveal composition and the temperature structures at the day-night terminator regions in planetary atmospheres, and help understand the atmospheric process and formation environments of exoplanets. Here, we present the optical transmission spectroscopic study of an inflated Saturn-mass planet WASP-69 b, obtained by the 4-meter ground-based telescope Southern Astrophysical Research Telescope (SOAR). We obtain spectroscopic transit light curves in 20 passbands from 502 to 890 nm, and fit them using Gaussian Processes and an analytical transit model to obtain independent transit depths for each. The derived transmission spectrum of WASP-69 b shows a slope with absorption depth increasing towards blue wavelengths, indicating a Rayleigh scattering in the atmosphere consistent with previous works. The retrieval analysis yields a tentative detection of TiO absorption feature in the transmission spectrum. We present the first results from the SOAR telescope to characterize exoplanetary atmospheres proving its capability and precision for hot Jupiters around bright stars in an area dominated by results from large ground-based telescopes or space telescopes.

The Masses of a Sample of Radial-Velocity Exoplanets with Astrometric Measurements

Being one of the most fundamental physical parameter of astronomical objects, mass plays a vital role in the study of exoplanets, including their temperature structure, chemical composition, formation, and evolution. However, nearly a quarter of the known confirmed exoplanets lack measurements of their masses. This is particularly severe for those discovered via the radial-velocity (RV) technique, which alone could only yield the minimum mass of planets. In this study, we use published RV data combined with astrometric data from a cross-calibrated Hipparcos-Gaia Catalog of Accelerations (HGCA) to jointly constrain the masses of 115 RV-detected substellar companions, by conducting full orbital fits using the public tool \texttt{orvara}. Among them, 9 exoplanets with $M_{\rm p}\,{\rm sin}\,i<13.5\ M_{\rm Jup}$ are reclassified to the brown dwarf (BD) regime, and 16 BD candidates ($13.5\leqslant M_{\rm p}\,{\rm sin}\,i<80\,M_{\rm Jup}$) turn out to be low-mass M dwarfs. We point out the presence of a transition in the BD regime as seen in the distributions of host star metallicity and orbital eccentricity with respect to planet masses. We confirm the previous findings that companions with masses below $42.5\ M_{\rm Jup}$ might primarily form in the protoplanetary disc through core accretion or disc gravitational instability, while those with masses above $42.5\ M_{\rm Jup}$ formed through the gravitational instability of molecular cloud like stars. Selection effects and detection biases which may affect our analysis to some extent, are discussed.

The role of radial migration on tracing lithium evolution in the Galactic disk

With the calculated guiding center radius $R_{guiding}$ and birth radius $R_{birth}$, we investigate the role of radial migration on the description of lithium evolution in the Galactic disk based on the upper envelope of the A(Li) vs. [Fe/H] diagram. Using migration distances, we find that stars in the solar neighborhood are born at different locations in the galactic disk, and cannot all be explained by models of chemical evolution in the solar neighborhood. It is found that the upper envelope of the A(Li) vs. [Fe/H] diagram varies significantly with $R_{birth}$, which explains the decrease of Li for super-metal-rich (SMR) stars because they are non-young stars born in the inner disk. The upper envelope of Li-$R_{birth}$ plane fits very well with chemical evolution models by Grisoni et al. for $R_{birth} = 7 - 12$ kpc, outside which young stars generally lack sufficient time to migrate to the solar neighborhood. For stars born in the solar neighborhood, the young open clusters and the upper envelope of field stars with age $<$ 3 Gyr fit well with theoretical prediction. We find that calculations using stars with ages less than 3 Gyr are necessary to obtain an undepleted Li upper envelope, and that stars with solar age (around 4.5 Gyr) have depleted around 0.3 dex from the original value based on the chemical evolution model of Grisoni et al.

A Dwarf Galaxy Debris Stream Associated with Palomar 1 and the Anticenter Stream

We report the discovery of a new stream (dubbed as Yangtze) detected in $Gaia$ Data Release 3. The stream is at a heliocentric distance of $\sim$ 9.12 kpc and spans nearly 27$°$ by 1.9$°$ on sky. The colour-magnitude diagram of Yangtze indicates a stellar population of Age $\sim$ 11 Gyr and [M/H] $\sim$ -0.7 dex. It has a number density of about 5.5 stars degree$^{-2}$ along with a surface brightness of $Σ_G \simeq$ 34.9 mag arcsec$^{-2}$. The dynamics and metallicity estimate suggest that Yangtze may be closely related to Palomar 1 and the Anticenter stream.

Simultaneously realizing thermal and electromagnetic cloaking by multi-physical null medium

Simultaneously manipulating multiple physical fields plays an important role in the increasingly complex integrated systems, aerospace equipment, biochemical productions, etc. For on-chip systems with high integration level (e.g., electronic/photonic chips and radio-frequency/microwave circuits), where both electromagnetic information/energy transporting and heat dissipation/recovery need to be considered, the precise and efficient control of the propagation of electromagnetic waves and heat fluxes simultaneously is particularly important. In this study, we propose a graphical designing method based on thermal-electromagnetic null medium to simultaneously control the propagation of electromagnetic waves and thermal fields according to the pre-designed paths. A thermal-electromagnetic cloak, which can create a cloaking effect on both electromagnetic waves and thermal fields simultaneously, is designed by thermal-electromagnetic surface transformation and verified by both numerical simulations and experimental measurements. The thermal-electromagnetic surface transformation proposed in this study provides a new methodology for simultaneous controlling on electromagnetic and temperature fields, which can be used to realize a series of novel thermal-electromagnetic devices such as thermal-electromagnetic shifter, splitter, bender, multiplexer and mode converter. The designed thermal-electromagnetic cloak opens up new ways to create a concealed region where any object within it does not create any disturbance to the external electromagnetic waves and temperature fields simultaneously, which may have significant applications in improving thermal-electromagnetic compatibility problem, protecting of thermal-electromagnetic sensitive components, and improving efficiency of energy usage for complex on-chip systems.

PCRED: Zero-shot Relation Triplet Extraction with Potential Candidate Relation Selection and Entity Boundary Detection

Zero-shot relation triplet extraction (ZeroRTE) aims to extract relation triplets from unstructured texts under the zero-shot setting, where the relation sets at the training and testing stages are disjoint. Previous state-of-the-art method handles this challenging task by leveraging pretrained language models to generate data as additional training samples, which increases the training cost and severely constrains the model performance. To address the above issues, we propose a novel method named PCRED for ZeroRTE with Potential Candidate Relation Selection and Entity Boundary Detection. The remarkable characteristic of PCRED is that it does not rely on additional data and still achieves promising performance. The model adopts a relation-first paradigm, recognizing unseen relations through candidate relation selection. With this approach, the semantics of relations are naturally infused in the context. Entities are extracted based on the context and the semantics of relations subsequently. We evaluate our model on two ZeroRTE datasets. The experiment results show that our method consistently outperforms previous works. Our code will be available at https://anonymous.4open.science/r/PCRED.

Evidence for Co-rotation Origin of Super Metal Rich Stars in LAMOST-Gaia: Multiple Ridges with a Similar Slope in phi versus Lz Plane

Super metal-rich (SMR) stars in the solar neighborhood are thought to be born in the inner disk and came to present location by radial migration, which is most intense at the co-rotation resonance (CR) of the Galactic bar. In this work, we show evidence for the CR origin of SMR stars in LAMOST-Gaia by detecting six ridges and undulations in the phi versus Lz space coded by median VR, following a similar slope of -8 km/s kpc/deg. The slope is predicted by Monario et al.'s model for CR of a large and slow Galactic bar. For the first time, we show the variation of angular momentum with azimuths from -10 deg to 20 deg for two outer and broad undulations with negative VR around -18 km/s following this slope. The wave-like pattern with large amplitude outside CR and a wide peak of the second undulations indicate that minor merger of the Sagittarius dwarf galaxy with the disk might play a role besides the significant impact of CR of the Galactic bar.

Existence of Tidal Tails for the Globular Cluster NGC 5824

Context. Several dynamically cold streams have been associated with certain globular clusters (GCs) based on orbital energies and angular momenta. Some of these streams are surprisingly far apart from their progenitors and one such pair is Triangulum and NGC 5824. Triangulum can be considered as a piece of NGC 5824 leading tail since the cluster's future orbit matches with the stream's track well. The existence of the leading tail for NGC 5824 is the motivation behind the search for its trailing tail. Aims. Our goal is to confirm the connection between Triangulum and NGC 5824 and seek the trailing tail of the cluster. Methods. The selection of member stars of Triangulum is made through various cuts in metallicity, proper motions (PMs), radial velocity and color-magnitude diagram (CMD). The selected members are compared in phase space to a mock stream which models the disruption of NGC 5824. We then try to detect the trailing tail of the cluster based on a modified matched-filter technique. Stars are assigned weights using their color differences from the cluster's locus in CMD. These weights are further scaled based on stars' departures from expected PMs of the model stream. Results. A total of 26 member stars for Triangulum are obtained and 16 of them are newly identified. These members are consistent with the mock stream in the phase space and their metalicity and position on the CMD are in good agreements with NGC 5824. By applying the matched-filter, a tenuous trailing tail of the cluster is detected, spanning $\sim$ 50$^\circ$ long on sky. The signature matches with the mock stream's trajectory well. Conclusions. Our results support that Triangulum stream acts as a part of the leading tail for NGC 5824. On the trailing side, we have detected a 50$^\circ$ tail extended from the cluster. The existence of both leading and trailing tails for the GC NGC 5824 is verified.

A New Cold Stream near the Southern Galactic Pole

We report the discovery of a cold stream near the southern Galactic pole (dubbed as SGP-S) detected in $Gaia$ Early Data Release 3. The stream is at a heliocentric distance of $\sim$ 9.5 kpc and spans nearly 58$^\circ$ by 0.6$^\circ$ on sky. The colour-magnitude diagram of SGP-S indicates an old and metal-poor (age $\sim$ 12 Gyr, [M/H] $\sim$ -2.0 dex) stellar population. The stream's surface brightness reaches an exceedingly low level of $Σ_G \simeq$ 36.2 mag arcsec$^{-2}$. Neither extant globular clusters nor other known streams are associated with SGP-S.

Revisit of open clusters UPK 39, UPK 41 and PHOC 39 : a new binary open cluster found

We investigate the three open clusters near Aquila Rift cloud, named as UPK 39 (\texttt{c1} hereafter), UPK 41 (\texttt{c2} hereafter) in Sim et al. (2019) and PHOC 39 (\texttt{c3} hereafter) in Hunt \& Reffert (2021), respectively. Using photometric passpands, reddening, and extinction from Gaia DR3, we construct the color-absolute-magnitude diagram (CAMD). Using isochrone fits their ages are estimated as $6.3\pm0.9$, $8.1\pm1.4$ and $21.8\pm2.2$ Myr, respectively. Their proper motions and radial velocities, estimated using data from Gaia and LAMOST are very similar. From their orbits, relative distances among them at different times, kinematics, ages, and metallicities, we conclude that \texttt{c1} and \texttt{c2} are primordial binary open cluster, which are likely to have been formed at the same time, and \texttt{c3} may capture \texttt{c1}, \texttt{c2} in the future.
