Majorana zero modes, unconventional real-complex transition and mobility edges in a one-dimensional non-Hermitian quasi-periodic lattice

In this paper, a one-dimensional non-Hermitian quasiperiodic $p$-wave superconductor without $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry is studied. By analyzing the spectrum, we discovered there still exists real-complex energy transition even if the inexistence of $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry breaking. By the inverse participation ratio, we constructed such a correspondence that pure real energies correspond to the extended states and complex energies correspond to the localized states, and this correspondence is precise and effective to detect the mobility edges. After investigating the topological properties, we arrive at a fact that the Majorana zero modes in this system are immune to the non-Hermiticity.

Impurity induced quantum chaos for an ultracold bosonic ensemble in a double-well

We demonstrate that an ultracold many-body bosonic ensemble confined in a one-dimensional (1D) double-well (DW) potential can exhibit chaotic dynamics due to the presence of a single impurity. The non-equilibrium dynamics is triggered by a quench of the impurity-Bose interaction and is illustrated via the evolution of the population imbalance for the bosons between the two wells. While the increase of the post-quench interaction strength always facilitates the irregular motion for the bosonic population imbalance, it becomes regular again when the impurity is initially populated in the highly excited states. Such an integrability to chaos (ITC) transition is fully captured by the transient dynamics of the corresponding linear entanglement entropy, whose infinite-time averaged value additionally characterizes the edge of the chaos and implies the existence of an effective Bose-Bose attraction induced by the impurity. In order to elucidate the physical origin for the observed ITC transition, we perform a detailed spectral analysis for the mixture with respect to both the energy spectrum as well as the eigenstates. Specifically, two distinguished spectral behaviors upon a variation of the interspecies interaction strength are observed. While the avoided level-crossings take place in the low-energy spectrum, the energy levels in the high-energy spectrum possess a band-like structure and are equidistant within each band. This leads to a significant delocalization of the low-lying eigenvectors which, in turn, accounts for the chaotic nature of the bosonic dynamics. By contrast, those highly excited states bear a high resemblance to the non-interacting integrable basis, which explains for the recovery of the integrability for the bosonic species. Finally, we discuss the induced Bose-Bose attraction as well as its impact on the bosonic dynamics.

Electromagnetically Induced Transparencies with Two Transverse Bose-Einstein Condensates in a Four-Mirror Cavity

We investigate electromagnetically induced transparencies with two transverse Bose-Einstein condensates in four-mirror optical cavity, driven by a strong pump laser and a weak probe laser. The cavity mode, after getting split from beam splitter, interacts with two independent Bose-Einstein Condensates transversely trapped in the arms of the cavity along $x$-axis and $y$-axis. The interaction of intra-cavity optical mode excites momentum side modes in Bose-Einstein Condensates, which then mimic as two atomic mirrors coupled through cavity field. We show that the probe field photons transition through the atomic mirrors yields to two coupled electromagnetically induced transparency windows, which only exist when both atomic states are coupled with the cavity. Further, the strength of these novel electromagnetically induced transparencies gets increased with an increase in atom-cavity coupling. Furthermore, we investigate the behavior of Fano resonances and dynamics of fast and slow light. We illustrate that the Fano line shapes and dynamics of slow light can be enhanced by strengthening the interaction between atomic states and cavity mode. Our findings not only contribute to the quantum nonlinear optics of complex systems but also provide a platform to test multi-dimensional atomic states in a single system.

Dynamics of a quantum phase transition in the Aubry-André-Harper model with $p$-wave superconductivity

We investigate the nonequilibrium dynamics of the one-dimension Aubry-André-Harper model with $p$-wave superconductivity by changing the potential strength with slow and sudden quench. Firstly, we study the slow quench dynamics from localized phase to critical phase by linearly decreasing the potential strength $V$. The localization length is finite and its scaling obeys the Kibble-Zurek mechanism. The results show that the second-order phase transition line shares the same critical exponent $zν$, giving the correlation length $ν=0.997$ and dynamical exponent $z=1.373$, which are different from the Aubry-André model. Secondly, we also study the sudden quench dynamics between three different phases: localized phase, critical phase, and extended phase. In the limit of $V=0$ and $V=\infty$, we analytically study the sudden quench dynamics via the Loschmidt echo. The results suggest that, if the initial state and the post-quench Hamiltonian are in different phases, the Loschmidt echo vanishes at some time intervals. Furthermore, we found that, if the initial value is in the critical phase, the direction of the quench is the same as one of the two limits mentioned before, and similar behaviors will occur.

Fate of Majorana zero modes, critical states and non-conventional real-complex transition in non-Hermitian quasiperiodic lattices

We study a one-dimensional $p$-wave superconductor subject to non-Hermitian quasiperiodic potentials. Although the existence of the non-Hermiticity, the Majorana zero mode is still robust against the disorder perturbation. The analytic topological phase boundary is verified by calculating the energy gap closing point and the topological invariant. Furthermore, we investigate the localized properties of this model, revealing that the topological phase transition is accompanied with the Anderson localization phase transition, and a wide critical phase emerges with amplitude increments of the non-Hermitian quasiperiodic potentials. Finally, we numerically uncover a non-conventional real-complex transition of the energy spectrum, which is different from the conventional $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetric transition.

Large Chern numbers in a dissipative dice model

For decades, the topological phenomena in quantum systems have always been catching our attention. Recently, there are many interests on the systems where topologically protected edge states exist, even in the presence of non-Hermiticity. Motivated by these researches, the topological properties of a non-Hermitian dice model are studied in two non-Hermitian cases, viz. in the imbalanced and the balanced dissipations. Our results suggest that the topological phases are protected by the real gaps and the bulk-edge correspondence readily seen in the real edge-state spectra. Besides, we show that the principle of the bulk-edge correspondence in Hermitian case is still effective in analyzing the three-band non-Hermitian system. We find that there are topological non-trivial phases with large Chern numbers $C=-3$ robust against the dissipative perturbations.

Floquet and Anomalous Floquet Weyl Semimetals

The periodic driving of a quantum system can enable new topological phases without analogs in static systems. This provides a route towards preparing non-equilibrium quantum phases rooted into the non-equilibrium nature by periodic driving engineering. Motivated by the ongoing considerable interest in topological semimetals, we are interested in the novel topological phases in the periodically driven topological semimetals without a static counterpart. We propose to design non-equilibrium topological semimetals in the regime of weakly driving field where the spectrum width of shares the same magnitude with the driving frequency. We identify two novel types of non-equilibrium Weyl semimetals (i.e., Floquet and anomalous Floquet Weyl semimetals) that do not exhibit analogues in equilibrium. The proposed setup is shown to be experimentally feasible using the state-of-the-art techniques used to control ultracold atoms in optical lattices.

Metal-insulator phase transition and topology in a three-component system

In the framework of the tight binding approximation, we study a non-interacting model on the three-component dice lattice with real nearest-neighbor and complex next-nearest-neighbor hopping subjected to $Λ$- or V-type sublattice potentials. By analyzing the dispersions of corresponding energy bands, we find that the system undergoes a metal-insulator transition which can be modulated not only by the Fermi energy but also the tunable extra parameters. Furthermore, rich topological phases, including the ones with high Hall plateau, are uncovered by calculating the associated band's Chern number. Besides, we also analyze the edge-state spectra and discuss the correspondence between Chern numbers and the edge states by the principle of bulk-edge correspondence.

Connecting dynamical quantum phase transitions and topological steady-state transitions by tuning the energy gap

Considerable theoretical and experimental efforts have been devoted to the quench dynamics, in particular, the dynamical quantum phase transition (DQPT) and the steady-state transition. These developments have motivated us to study the quench dynamics of the topological systems, from which we find the connection between these two transitions, that is, the DQPT, accompanied by a nonanalytic behavior as a function of time, always merges into a steady-state transition signaled by the nonanalyticity of observables in the steady limit. As the characteristic time of the DQPT diverges, it exhibits universal scaling behavior, which is related to the scaling behavior at the corresponding steady-state transition.

Predicting Large-Chern-Number Phases in a Shaken Optical Dice Lattice

With respect to the quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE), the detection of topological nontrivial large-Chern-number phases is an intriguing subject. Motivated by recent research on Floquet topological phases, this study proposes a periodic driving protocol to engineer large-Chern-number phases using QAHE. Herein, spinless ultracold fermionic atoms are studied in a two-dimensional optical dice lattice with nearest-neighbor hopping and a $Λ$/V-type sublattice potential subjected to a circular driving force. Results suggest that large-Chern-number phases exist with Chern numbers equal to $C=-2$, which is consistent with the edge-state energy spectra.

Characterization of many-body mobility edges with random matrices

Whether the many-body mobility edges can exist in a one-dimensional interacting quantum system is a controversial problem, mainly hampered by the limited system sizes amenable to numerical simulations. We investigate the transition from chaos to localization by constructing a combined random matrix, which has two extremes, one of Gaussian orthogonal ensemble and the other of Poisson statistics, drawn from different distributions. We find that by fixing a scaling parameter, the mobility edges can exist while increasing the matrix dimension $D\rightarrow\infty$, depending on the distribution of matrix elements of the diagonal uncorrelated matrix. By applying those results to a specific one-dimensional isolated quantum system of random diagonal elements, we confirm the existence of a many-body mobility edge, connecting it with results on the onset of level repulsion extracted from ensembles of mixed random matrices.

Numerical Approach to the Evolution of the Spin-boson Systems and its Application on the Buck-Sukumar Model

We present a systematic numerical iteration approach to study the evolution properties of the spin-boson systems, which works well in whole coupling regime. This approach involves the evaluation of a set of coefficients for the formal expansion of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation $\vert t\rangle=e^{-i\hat{H}t}\vert t=0\rangle$ by expanding the initial state $\vert t=0\rangle$ in Fock space. The main advantage of this method is that this set of coefficients is unique for the Hamiltonian studied, which allows one to calculate the time evolution based on the different initial states. To complement our numerical calculations, the method is applied to the Buck-Sukumar model. Furthermore, we pointed out that, when the ground state energy of the model is unbounded and no ground state exists in a certain parameter space, the unstable time evolution of the physical quantities is the natural results. Furthermore, we test the performance of the numerical method to the Hamiltonian that use anti-Hermitian terms for modeling open quantum systems.

Investigating many-body mobility edges in isolated quantum systems

The existence of many-body mobility edges in closed quantum systems has been the focus of intense debate after the emergence of the description of the many-body localization phenomenon. Here we propose that this issue can be settled in experiments by investigating the time evolution of local degrees of freedom, tailored for specific energies and initial states. An interacting model of spinless fermions with exponentially long-ranged tunneling amplitudes, whose non-interacting version known to display single-particle mobility edges, is used as the starting point upon which nearest-neighbor interactions are included. We verify the manifestation of many-body mobility edges by using numerous probes, suggesting that one cannot explain their appearance as merely being a result of finite-size effects.

Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov pairing states of a polarized dipolar Fermi gas trapped in a one-dimensional optical lattice

We study the interplay between the long- and short-range interaction of a one-dimensional optical lattice system of two-component dipolar fermions by using the density matrix renormalization group method. The atomic density profile, pairing-pairing correlation function, and the compressibility are calculated in the ground state, from which we identify the parameter region of the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) pairing state, half-metal (HM) state, FFLO-HM state, and the normal polarized state, and thus the phase diagram in the coordinates of the long- and short-range interaction strength. The effect of the long-range dipolar interaction on the FFLO state is discussed in details. We find that the long-range part of the dipole-dipole interaction does not sweep away the FFLO superconducting region that is driven by the short-range interaction in the Hubbard model, and thus the FFLO state survives in the wide parameter space of the long-range interaction, polarization and the filling.

Critical behavior of order parameter at the nonequilibrium phase transition of the Ising model

After a quench of transverse field, the asymptotic long-time state of Ising model displays a transition from a ferromagnetic phase to a paramagnetic phase as the post-quench field strength increases, which is revealed by the vanishing of the order parameter defined as the averaged magnetization over time. We estimate the critical behavior of the magnetization at this nonequilibrium phase transition by using mean-field approximation. In the vicinity of the critical field, the magnetization vanishes as the inverse of a logarithmic function, which is significantly distinguished from the critical behavior of order parameter at the corresponding equilibrium phase transition, i.e. a power-law function.

Zeros of Loschmidt echo in the presence of Anderson localization

We study the Loschmidt echo and the dynamical free energy of the Anderson model after a quench of the disorder strength. If the initial state is extended and the eigenstates of the post-quench Hamiltonian are strongly localized, we argue that the Loschmidt echo exhibits zeros periodically with the period $2π/D$ where $D$ is the width of spectra. At these zeros, the dynamical free energy diverges in a logarithmic way. We present numerical evidence of our argument in one- and three-dimensional Anderson models. Our findings connect the dynamical quantum phase transitions to the localization-delocalization phase transitions.

Localization and mobility edges in the off-diagonal quasiperiodic model with slowly varying potentials

We study a one-dimensional system that includes both a commensurate off-diagonal modulation of the hopping amplitude and an incommensurate, slowly varying diagonal on-site modulation. By using asymptotic heuristic arguments, we identify four closed form expressions for the mobility edges. We further study numerically the inverse participation ratio, the density of states and the Lyapunov exponent. The numerical results are in exact agreement with our theoretical predictions. Besides a metal-insulator transition driven by the strength of the slowly varying potential, another four insulator-metal transitions are found in this model as the energy is increased in magnitude from the band center ($E =0$) to the mobility edges ($\pm E_{c2}, \pm E_{c1}$).

Phase diagram of a generalized off-diagonal Aubry-André model with p-wave pairing

Off-diagonal Aubry-André (AA) model has recently attracted a great deal of attention as they provide condensed matter realization of topological phases. We numerically study a generalized off-diagonal AA model with p-wave superfluid pairing in the presence of both commensurate and incommensurate hopping modulations. The phase diagram as functions of the modulation strength of incommensurate hopping and the strength of the p-wave pairing is obtained by using the multifractal analysis. We show that with the appearance of the p-wave pairing, the system exhibits mobility-edge phases and critical phases with various number of topologically protected zero-energy modes. Predicted topological nature of these exotic phases can be realized in a cold atomic system of incommensurate bichromatic optical lattice with induced p-wave superfluid pairing by using a Raman laser in proximity to a molecular Bose-Einstein condensation.
