Triton-3He relative and differential flows and the high density behavior of nuclear symmetry energy

Using a transport model coupled with a phase-space coalescence after-burner we study the triton-3He relative and differential transverse flows in semi-central 132Sn+124Sn reactions at a beam energy of 400 MeV/nucleon. We find that the triton-3He pairs carry interesting information about the density dependence of the nuclear symmetry energy. The t-3He relative flow can be used as a particularly powerful probe of the high-density behavior of the nuclear symmetry energy.

Triton-$^3$He relative and differential flows as probes of the nuclear symmetry energy at supra-saturation densities

Using a transport model coupled with a phase-space coalescence after-burner we study the triton-$^3$He ratio, relative and differential transverse flows in semi-central $^{132}Sn+^{124}Sn$ reactions at a beam energy of 400 MeV/A. The neutron-proton ratio, relative and differential flows are also discussed as a reference. We find that similar to the neutron-proton pairs the triton-$^3$He pairs also carry interesting information about the density dependence of the nuclear symmetry energy. Moreover, the nuclear symmetry energy affects more strongly the t-$^3$He relative and differential flows than the $π^-/π^+$ ratio in the same reaction. The t-$^3$He relative flow can be used as a particularly powerful probe of the high-density behavior of the nuclear symmetry energy.

A systematic study of the $π^-/π^+$ ratio in heavy-ion collisions with the same neutron/proton ratio but different masses

A systematic study of the $π^-/π^+$ ratio in heavy-ion collisions with the same neutron/proton ratio but different masses can help single out effects of the nuclear mean field on pion production. Based on simulations using the IBUU04 transport model, it is found that the $π^-$ / $π^+$ ratio in head-on collisions of $^{48}$Ca+$^{48}$Ca, $^{124}$Sn +$^{124}$Sn and $^{197}$Au+$^{197}$Au at beam energies from 0.25 to 0.6 \agev increases with increasing the system size or decreasing the beam energies. A comprehensive analysis of the dynamical isospin fractionation and the \rpi ratio as well as their time evolution and spatial distributions demonstrates clearly that the \rpi ratio is an effective probe of the high-density behavior of the nuclear symmetry energy.

Constraining the EOS of neutron-rich nuclear matter and properties of neutron stars with heavy-ion reactions

Heavy-ion reactions especially those induced by radioactive beams provide useful information about the density dependence of the nuclear symmetry energy, thus the Equation of State of neutron-rich nuclear matter, relevant for many astrophysical studies. The latest developments in constraining the symmetry energy at both sub- and supra-saturation densities from analyses of the isopsin diffusion and the $π^-/π^+$ ratio in heavy-ion collisions using the IBUU04 transport model are discussed. Astrophysical ramifications of the partially constrained symmetry energy on properties of neutron star crusts, gravitational waves emitted by deformed pulsars and the w-mode oscillations of neutron stars are presented briefly.

Circumstantial evidence for a soft nuclear symmetry energy at supra-saturation densities

Within an isospin- and momentum-dependent hadronic transport model it is shown that the recent FOPI data on the $π^-/π^+$ ratio in central heavy-ion collisions at SIS/GSI energies (Willy Reisdorf {\it et al.}, NPA {\bf 781}, 459 (2007)) provide circumstantial evidence suggesting a rather soft nuclear symmetry energy \esym at $ρ\geq 2ρ_0$ compared to the Akmal-Pandharipande-Ravenhall prediction. Some astrophysical implications and the need for further experimental confirmations are discussed.

Neutron-proton bremsstrahlung from intermediate energy heavy-ion reactions as a probe of the nuclear symmetry energy?

Hard photons from neutron-proton bremsstrahlung in intermediate energy heavy-ion reactions are examined as a potential probe of the nuclear symmetry energy within a transport model. Effects of the symmetry energy on the yields and spectra of hard photons are found to be generally smaller than those due to the currently existing uncertainties of both the in-medium nucleon-nucleon cross sections and the photon production probability in the elementary process $pn\to pnγ$. Very interestingly, nevertheless, the ratio of hard photon spectra $R_{1/2}(γ)$ from two reactions using isotopes of the same element is not only approximately independent of these uncertainties but also quite sensitive to the symmetry energy. For the head-on reactions of $^{132}Sn+^{124}Sn$ and $^{112}Sn+^{112}Sn$ at $E_{beam}/A=50$ MeV, for example, the $R_{1/2}(γ)$ displays a rise up to 15% when the symmetry energy is reduced by about 20% at $ρ=1.3ρ_0$ which is the maximum density reached in these reactions.

Determining the density dependence of the nuclear symmetry energy using heavy-ion reactions

We review recent progress in the determination of the subsaturation density behavior of the nuclear symmetry energy from heavy-ion collisions as well as the theoretical progress in probing the high density behavior of the symmetry energy in heavy-ion reactions induced by high energy radioactive beams. We further discuss the implications of these results for the nuclear effective interactions and the neutron skin thickness of heavy nuclei.

Differential isospin-fractionation in dilute asymmetric nuclear matter

The differential isospin-fractionation (IsoF) during the liquid-gas phase transition in dilute asymmetric nuclear matter is studied as a function of nucleon momentum. Within a self-consistent thermal model it is shown that the neutron/proton ratio of the gas phase becomes {\it smaller} than that of the liquid phase for energetic nucleons, although the gas phase is overall more neutron-rich. Clear indications of the differential IsoF consistent with the thermal model predictions are demonstrated within a transport model for heavy-ion reactions. Future comparisons with experimental data will allow us to extract critical information about the momentum dependence of the isovector strong interaction.

Constraining properties of neutron stars with heavy-ion reactions in terrestrial laboratories

Heavy-ion reactions provide a unique means to investigate the equation of state (EOS) of neutron-rich nuclear matter, especially the density dependence of the nuclear symmetry energy $E_{sym}(ρ)$. The latter plays an important role in understanding many key issues in both nuclear physics and astrophysics. Recent analyses of heavy-ion reactions have already put a stringent constraint on the $E_{sym}(ρ)$ around the saturation density. This subsequently allowed us to constrain significantly the radii and cooling mechanisms of neutron stars as well as the possible changing rate of the gravitational constant G.

Probing the Nuclear Symmetry Energy with Heavy-Ion Reactions Induced by Neutron-Rich Nuclei

Heavy-ion reactions induced by neutron-rich nuclei provide a unique means to investigate the equation of state of isospin-asymmetric nuclear matter, especially the density dependence of the nuclear symmetry energy. In particular, recent analyses of the isospin diffusion data in heavy-ion reactions have already put a stringent constraint on the nuclear symmetry energy around the nuclear matter saturation density. We review this exciting result and discuss its implications on nuclear effective interactions and the neutron skin thickness of heavy nuclei. In addition, we also review the theoretical progress on probing the high density behaviors of the nuclear symmetry energy in heavy-ion reactions induced by high energy radioactive beams.

Double neutron-proton differential transverse flow as a probe for the high-density behavior of the nuclear symmetry energy

The double neutron-proton differential transverse flowtaken from two reaction systems using different isotopes of the same element is studied at incident beam energies of 400 and 800 MeV/nucleon within the framework of an isospin- and momentum-dependent hadronic transport model IBUU04. The double differential flow is found to retain about the same sensitivity to the density dependence of the nuclear symmetry energy as the single differential flow in the more neutron-rich reaction. Because the double differential flow reduces significantly both the systematic errors and the influence of the Coulomb force, it is thus more effective probe for the high-density behavior of the nuclear symmetry energy.

Single and double pi^{-}/pi^{+} ratios in heavy-ion reactions as probes of the high-density behavior of the nuclear symmetry energy

Based on an isospin- and momentum-dependent hadronic transport model IBUU04, effects of the nuclear symmetry energy on the single and double pi^{-}/pi^{+}ratios in central reactions of ^{132}Sn+^{124}Sn and ^{112}Sn+^{112}Sn at a beam energy of 400 MeV/nucleon are studied. It is found that around the Coulomb peak of the single pi^{-}/pi^{+} ratio the double pi^{-}/pi^{+} ratio taken from the two isotopic reactions retains about the same sensitivity to the density dependence of nuclear symmetry energy. Because the double pi^{-}/pi^{+}ratio can reduce significantly the systematic errors, it is thus a more effective probe for the high-density behavior of the nuclear symmetry energy.

Double neutron/proton ratio of nucleon emissions in isotopic reaction systems as a robust probe of nuclear symmetry energy

The double neutron/proton ratio of nucleon emissions taken from two reaction systems using four isotopes of the same element, namely, the neutron/proton ratio in the neutron-rich system over that in the more symmetric system, has the advantage of reducing systematically the influence of the Coulomb force and the normally poor efficiencies of detecting low energy neutrons. The double ratio thus suffers less systematic errors. Within the IBUU04 transport model the double neutron/proton ratio is shown to have about the same sensitivity to the density dependence of nuclear symmetry energy as the single neutron/proton ratio in the neutron-rich system involved. The double neutron/proton ratio is therefore more useful for further constraining the symmetry energy of neutron-rich matter.

A Transport Model for Nuclear Reactions Induced by Radioactive Beams

Major ingredients of an isospin and momentum dependent transport model for nuclear reactions induced by radioactive beams are outlined. Within the IBUU04 version of this model we study several experimental probes of the equation of state of neutron-rich matter, especially the density dependence of the nuclear symmetry energy. Comparing with the recent experimental data from NSCL/MSU on isospin diffusion, we found a nuclear symmetry energy of $% E_{sym}(ρ)\approx 31.6(ρ/ρ_{0})^{1.05}$ at subnormal densities. Predictions on several observables sensitive to the density dependence of the symmetry energy at supranormal densities accessible at GSI and the planned Rare Isotope Accelerator (RIA) are also made.

Progress Towards Determining the Density Dependence of the Nuclear Symmetry Energy Using Heavy-Ion Reactions

Within the IBUU04 version of an isospin- and momentum-dependent transport model using a modified Gogny effective interaction, recent experimental data from NSCL/MSU on isospin diffusion are found to be consistent with a nuclear symmetry energy of $E_{sym}(ρ)\approx 31.6(ρ/ρ_{0})^{1.05}$ at subnormal densities. Predictions on several observables sensitive to the density dependence of the symmetry energy at supranormal densities accessible at GSI and the planned Rare Isotope Accelerator (RIA) are also made.

Isospin dependence of nucleon emission and radial flow in heavy-ion collisions induced by high energy radioactive beams

Using an isospin- and momentum-dependent transport model we study the emission of free nucleons and the nuclear radial flow in central heavy-ion collisions induced by high energy radioactive beams. The midrapidity neutron/proton ratio and its transverse momentum dependence are found very sensitive to the high density behavior of nuclear symmetry energy. The nuclear radial flow, however, depends only weakly on the symmetry energy.

Near-threshold pion production with radioactive beams at the Rare Isotope Accelerator

Using an isospin- and momentum-dependent transport model we study near-threshold pion production in heavy-ion collisions induced by radioactive beams at the planned Rare Isotope Accelerator (RIA). We revisit the question of probing the high density behavior of nuclear symmetry energy $E_{sym}(ρ)$ using the $π^-/π^+$ ratio. It is found that both the total and differential $π^-/π^+$ ratios remain sensitive to the $E_{sym}(ρ)$ when the momentum-dependence of both the isoscalar and isovector potentials are consistently taken into account. Moreover, the multiplicity and spectrum of $π^-$ mesons are found more sensitive to the $E_{sym}(ρ)$ than those of $π^+$ mesons. Finally, effects of the Coulomb potential on the pion spectra and $π^-/π^+$ ratio are also discussed.
