Structure and magnetic properties of a family of two-leg spin ladder compounds Ba2RE2Ge4O13 (RE = Pr, Nd, and Gd-Ho) with strong rung interaction

Compared to the intensive investigation on the 3d transition-metal (TM)-based spin ladder compounds, less attention has been paid to the ones constructed by the rare-earth (RE) ions. Herein, we report a family of RE-based spin ladder compounds Ba2RE2Ge4O13 (RE = Pr, Nd, Gd-Ho) crystallized into the monoclinic structure with the space group C2/c. The RE ions are arranged on a two-leg spin ladder motif along the b-axis, where the rung and leg exchange interactions are bridged via the RE-O-RE pathways and RE-O-Ge-O-RE routes, respectively. Moreover, the much shorter rung distance in the RE2O12 dimer units than the leg distance suggests Ba2RE2Ge4O13 to be a strong-rung spin ladder system. All the synthesized Ba2RE2Ge4O13 (RE = Pr, Nd, Gd-Ho) compounds exhibit the dominant antiferromagnetic (AFM) interactions and absence of magnetic order down to 1.8 K. Among the family members, Ba2Dy2Ge4O13 can be described by Jeff = 1/2 Kramers doublet states, the low temperature specific heat indicates the coexistence of spin dimerized state with broad maximum at ~ 2.4 K and long-range AFM order with TN = 0.81 K. This family of Ba2RE2Ge4O13 compounds thereby provides a rare platform to investigate the novel spin ladder physics constructed by 4f electrons.

Large topological Hall effect near room temperature in noncollinear ferromagnet LaMn2Ge2 single crystal

Non-trivial spin structures in itinerant magnets can give rise to topological Hall effect (THE) due to the interacting local magnetic moments and conductive electrons. While, in series of materials, THE has mostly been observed at low temperatures far below room temperature (RT) limiting its potential applications. Here, we report the anisotropic anomalous Hall effect (AHE) near RT in LaMn2Ge2, a noncollinear ferromagnetic (FM) with Curie temperature TC=325 K. Large topological Hall resistivity of ~1.0 10-6 ohmcm in broad temperature range (190 K <T< 300 K) is realized as field (H) parallel to the ab-plane (H // ab) and current along c axis (I // c), in contrast to the conventional AHE for H // c and I // ab. The emergence of THE is attributed to the spin chirality of noncoplanar spin configurations stabilized by thermal fluctuation during spin flop process. Moreover, the constructed temperature-field (H-T) phase diagrams based on the isothermal topological Hall resistivity reveal a field-induced transition from the noncoplanar spin configuration to polarized ferromagnetic states. Our experimental realization of large THE near RT highlights LaMn2Ge2 as a promising system for functional applications in novel spintronic devices.

A new family of disorder-free Rare-Earth-based kagomé lattice magnets: structure and magnetic characterizations of RE3BWO9 (RE=Pr, Nd, Gd-Ho) Boratotungstates

Exploration of rare-earth (RE)-based Kagome lattice magnets with spin-orbital entangled jeff=1/2 moments will provide new platform for investigating the exotic magnetic phases. Here, we report a new family of RE3BWO9 (RE=Pr,Nd,Gd-Ho) boratotungstates with magnetic RE3+ ions arranged on Kagome lattice, and perform its structure and magnetic characterizations. This serial compounds crystallize in hexagonal coordinated structure with space group P63 (No.173), where magnetic RE3+ ions have distorted Kagomé lattice connections within the ab plane and stacked in a AB-type fashion along c axis. The interlayer RE-RE separation is comparable with that of intralayer distance, forming 3-dimensional (3D) exchange coupled magnetic framework of RE3+ ions. The magnetic susceptibility data of RE3BWO9 (RE=Pr, Nd, Gd-Ho) reveal dominant antiferromagnetic interactions between magnetic RE3+ ions, but without visible magnetic ordering down to 2 K. The magnetization analyses for different RE3+ ions show diverse anisotropic behaviors, make RE3BWO9 as an appealing Kagome-lattice antiferromagnet to explore exotic magnetic phases.
