Data-Driven optimal control via Koopman operators and Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equations

This paper presents a data-driven stable manifold (DD-SM) method, which integrates Koopman operator representation learning with the geometric stable manifold approach to Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman (HJB) equations, enabling end-to-end optimal feedback control synthesis from raw trajectory data without prior knowledge of system dynamics. We construct an augmented control system under a unified symmetric subspace decomposition (SSD) and extended dynamic mode decomposition (EDMD) framework for joint approximation of the drift field, control matrix and their spatial derivatives, and derive probabilistic finite-sample error bounds for invariant and non-invariant dictionary spaces to yield a provably accurate approximate characteristic system of HJB equation. Via Lyapunov-Perron operator and ODE perturbation analysis, we prove the data-driven stable manifold achieves monotonically decreasing semi-global error with growing training data. We further establish closed-loop exponential stability and quantify the optimality gap, both tightenable by refining model accuracy. An efficient algorithm pipeline with adaptive data generation and deep neural approximation is developed, outputting control signals within 1 millisecond. Experiments on a modified van der Pol oscillator verify the effectiveness of our method.

The minimal periodic solutions for superquadratic autonomous Hamiltonian systems without the Palais-Smale condition

In this paper, we prove the existence of periodic solutions with any prescribed minimal period $T>0$ for even second order Hamiltonian systems and convex first order Hamiltonian systems under the weak Nehari condition instead of Ambrosetti-Rabinowitz's. To this end, we shall develop the method of Nehari manifold to directly deal with a frequently occurring problem where the Nehari manifold is not a manifold.

Symplectic algorithms for stable manifolds in control theory

In this note, we propose a symplectic algorithm for the stable manifolds of the Hamilton-Jacobi equations combined with an iterative procedure in [Sakamoto-van~der Schaft, IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control, 2008]. Our algorithm includes two key aspects. The first one is to prove a precise estimate for radius of convergence and the errors of local approximate stable manifolds. The second one is to extend the local approximate stable manifolds to larger ones by symplectic algorithms which have better long-time behaviors than general-purpose schemes. Our approach avoids the case of divergence of the iterative sequence of approximate stable manifolds, and reduces the computation cost. We illustrate the effectiveness of the algorithm by an optimal control problem with exponential nonlinearity.

Morse index and Maslov-type index of the discrete Hamiltonian system

In this paper, we give the definition of Maslov-type index of the discrete Hamiltonian system, and obtain the relation of Morse index and Maslov-type index of the discrete Hamiltonian system which is a generalization of case $ω=1$ in \cite{RoS1}, \cite{RoS2} and \cite{Maz1} to case $ω\in {\bf U}$ via direct method which is different from that of \cite{RoS1}, \cite{RoS2} and \cite{Maz1}. Moreover well-posedness of the splitting numbers $S_ω$ of the discrete Hamiltonian system is proven, thus index iteration theories in \cite{Bot1} and \cite{Lon4} are also valid for the discrete Hamiltonian system case.
