Topological phases of spinless $p$-orbital fermions in zigzag optical lattices

Motivated by the experiment [St-Jean {\it et al}., Nature Photon. {\bf 11}, 651 (2017)] on topological phases with collective photon modes in a zigzag chain of polariton micropillars, we study spinless $p$-orbital fermions with local interorbital hoppings and repulsive interactions between $p_x$ and $p_y$ bands in zigzag optical lattices. We show that spinless $p$-band fermions in zigzag optical lattices can mimic the interacting Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model and the effective transverse field Ising model in the presence of local hoppings. We analytically and numerically discuss the ground-state phases and quantum phase transitions of the model. This work provides a simple scheme to simulate topological phases and the quench dynamics of many-body systems in optical lattices.

Quantum phase transitions in the spin-1 Kitaev-Heisenberg chain

Recently, it has been proposed that higher-spin analogues of the Kitaev interactions $K>0$ may also occur in a number of materials with strong Hund's and spin-orbit coupling. In this work, we use Lanczos diagonalization and density matrix renormalization group methods to investigate numerically the $S=1$ Kitaev-Heisenberg model. The ground-state phase diagram and quantum phase transitions are investigated by employing local and nonlocal spin correlations. We identified two ordered phases at negative Heisenberg coupling $J<0$: a~ferromagnetic phase with $\langle S_i^zS_{i+1}^z\rangle>0$ and an intermediate left-left-right-right phase with $\langle S_i^xS_{i+1}^x\rangle\neq 0$. A~quantum spin liquid is stable near the Kitaev limit, while a topological Haldane phase is found for $J>0$.

Dynamical quantum phase transitions in a spin chain with deconfined quantum critical points

We analytically and numerically study the Loschmidt echo and the dynamical order parameters in a spin chain with a deconfined phase transition between a dimerized state and a ferromagnetic phase. For quenches from a dimerized state to a ferromagnetic phase, we find that the model can exhibit a dynamical quantum phase transition characterized by an associating dimerized order parameters. In particular, when quenching the system from the Majumdar-Ghosh state to the ferromagnetic Ising state, we find an exact mapping into the classical Ising chain for a quench from the paramagnetic phase to the classical Ising phase by analytically calculating the Loschmidt echo and the dynamical order parameters. By contrast, for quenches from a ferromagnetic state to a dimerized state, the system relaxes very fast so that the dynamical quantum transition may only exist in a short time scale. We reveal that the dynamical quantum phase transition can occur in systems with two broken symmetry phases and the quench dynamics may be independent on equilibrium phase transitions.

Anomalous Spontaneous Symmetry Breaking in non-Hermitian Systems with Biorthogonal Z2-symmetry

Landau's spontaneous symmetry breaking theory is a fundamental theory that describes the collective behaviors in many-body systems. It was well known that for usual spontaneous symmetry breaking in Hermitian systems, the order-disorder phase transition with gap closing and spontaneous symmetry breaking occur at the same critical point. In this paper, we generalized the Landau's spontaneous symmetry breaking theory to the cases in non-Hermitian (NH) many-body systems with biorthogonal Z2 symmetry and tried to discover certain universal features. We were surprised to find that the effect of the NH terms splits the spontaneous biorthogonal Z2 symmetry breaking from a (biorthogonal) order-disorder phase transition with gap closing. The sudden change of similarity for two degenerate ground states indicates a new type of quantum phase transition without gap closing accompanied by spontaneous biorthogonal Z2 symmetry breaking. We will take the NH transverse Ising model as an example to investigate the anomalous spontaneous symmetry breaking. The numerical results were consistent with the theoretical predictions.

The optimal frequency window for Floquet engineering in optical lattices

The concept of Floquet engineering is to subject a quantum system to time-periodic driving in such a way that it acquires interesting novel properties. It has been employed, for instance, for the realization of artificial magnetic fluxes in optical lattices and, typically, it is based on two approximations. First, the driving frequency is assumed to be low enough to suppress resonant excitations to high-lying states above some energy gap separating a low energy subspace from excited states. Second, the driving frequency is still assumed to be large compared to the energy scales of the low-energy subspace, so that also resonant excitations within this space are negligible. Eventually, however, deviations from both approximations will lead to unwanted heating on a time scale $τ$. Using the example of a one-dimensional system of repulsively interacting bosons in a shaken optical lattice, we investigate the optimal frequency (window) that maximizes $τ$. As a main result, we find that, when increasing the lattice depth, $τ$ increases faster than the experimentally relevant time scale given by the tunneling time $\hbar/J$, so that Floquet heating becomes suppressed.

Fidelity as a probe for a deconfined quantum critical point

Deconfined quantum critical point was proposed as a second-order quantum phase transition between two broken symmetry phases beyond the Landau-Ginzburg-Wilson paradigm. However, numerical studies cannot completely rule out a weakly first-order transition because of strong violations of finite-size scaling. We demonstrate that the fidelity is a simple probe to study deconfined quantum critical point. We study the ground-state fidelity susceptibility close to the deconfined quantum critical point in a spin chain using the large-scale finite-size density matrix renormalization group method. We find that the finite-size scaling of the fidelity susceptibility obeys the conventional scaling behavior for continuous phase transitions, supporting the deconfined quantum phase transition is continuous. We numerically determine the deconfined quantum critical point and the associated correlation length critical exponent from the finite-size scaling theory of the fidelity susceptibility. Our results are consistent with recent results obtained directly from the matrix product states for infinite-size lattices using others observables. Our work provides a useful probe to study critical behaviors at deconfined quantum critical point from the concept of quantum information.

Dynamical Scaling Laws of Out-of-Time-Ordered Correlators

The out-of-time-ordered correlator (OTOC) is central to the understanding of information scrambling in quantum many-body systems. In this work, we show that the OTOC in a quantum many-body system close to its critical point obeys dynamical scaling laws which are specified by a few universal critical exponents of the quantum critical point. Such scaling laws of the OTOC imply a universal form for the butterfly velocity of a chaotic system in the quantum critical region and allow one to locate the quantum critical point and extract all universal critical exponents of the quantum phase transitions. We numerically confirm the universality of the butterfly velocity in a chaotic model, namely the transverse axial next-nearest-neighbor Ising model, and show the feasibility of extracting the critical properties of quantum phase transitions from OTOC using the Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick (LMG) model.

Fidelity and criticality of quantum Ising chain with long-range interactions

We study the criticality of long-range quantum ferromagnetic Ising chain with algebraically decaying interactions $1/r^α$ via the fidelity susceptibility based on the exact diagonalization and the density matrix renormalization group techniques. We find that critical exponents change monotonously from the mean-field universality class to the short-range Ising universality class for intermediate $α$, which are consistent with recent results obtained from renormalization group. In addition, we determine the critical values for $1.8 \le α\le 3$ from the finite-size scaling of the fidelity susceptibility. Our work provides very nice numerical data from the fidelity susceptibility for the quantum long-range ferromagnetic Ising chain.

Fidelity Susceptibility Study of Quantum Long-Range Antiferromagnetic Ising Chain

We study the fidelity susceptibility of quantum antiferromagnetic Ising chain with a long-range power law interaction $1/r^α$ using the large-scale density matrix renormalization group method. We find that the critical adiabatic dimension $μ=2$ and the critical exponent of the correlation length $ν=1$ for arbitrary $α>0$, indicating all quantum phase transitions are second-order Ising transitions. In addition, we numerically determine the complete phase diagram for $0 < α\le 3$ from the data collapse of the fidelity susceptibility and show that the critical point $h_c$ changes monotonously with respect to $α$. This work will shed light on the nature of phase transitions in the quantum long-range antiferromagnetic Ising chain from a quantum information perspective.

Exact asymptotic correlation functions of bilinear spin operators of the Heisenberg antiferromagnetic spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ chain

Exact asymptotic expressions of the uniform parts of the two-point correlation functions of bilinear spin operators in the Heisenberg antiferromagnetic spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ chain are obtained. Apart from the algebraic decay, the logarithmic contribution is identified, and the numerical prefactor is determined. We also confirm numerically the multiplicative logarithmic correction of the staggered part of the bilinear spin operators $\langle\langle S^{a}_0S^{a}_{1}S^{b}_{r}S^{b}_{r+1} \rangle\rangle=(-1)^rd/(r \ln^{\frac{3}{2}}r) +(3δ_{a,b}-1) \ln^2r /(12 π^4 r^4)$, and estimate the numerical prefactor as $d\simeq 0.067$. The relevance of our results for ground state fidelity susceptibility at the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless quantum phase transition points in one-dimensional systems is discussed at the end of our work.

Topological Phases of Fermionic Ladders with Periodic Magnetic Fields

In recent experiments bosonic [Atala et al., Nat. Phys. 10, 588 (2014), B. K. Stuhl et al., Science 349, 1514 (2015)] as well as fermionic ladders [M. Mancini et al., Science 349, 1510 (2015)] with a uniform flux were studied and different interesting many-body states were observed. Motivated by these experiments, we extend the uniform synthetic magnetic field to a periodic case and show that a commensurate synthetic magnetic field offers an alternative scheme to realize topological phases in many-body systems of ultra-cold Fermi gases in ladder-like optical lattices. Using the exact diagonalization, we numerically determine the topological band structure, edge states, non-zero Chern numbers, Hofstadter-like-butterfly spectrum, and a complete phase diagram of non-interacting fermionic ladders.

Density-dependent synthetic magnetism for ultracold atoms in optical lattices

Raman-assisted hopping can allow for the creation of density-dependent synthetic magnetism for cold neutral gases in optical lattices. We show that the density-dependent fields lead to a non-trivial interplay between density modulations and chirality. This interplay results in a rich physics for atoms in two-leg ladders, characterized by a density-driven Meissner- to vortex-superfluid transition, and a non-trivial dependence of the density imbalance between the legs. Density-dependent fields also lead to intriguing physics in square lattices. In particular, it leads to a density-driven transition between a non-chiral and a chiral superfluid, both characterized by non-trivial charge density-wave amplitude. We finally show how the physics due to the density-dependent fields may be easily probed in experiments by monitoring the expansion of doublons and holes in a Mott insulator, which presents a remarkable dependence on quantum fluctuations.
