Pontryagin duality and sheaves of profinite modules

The well-known theory of Pontryagin duality provides a strong connection between the homology and cohomology theories of a profinite group in appropriate categories. A construction for taking the `profinite direct sum' of an infinite family of profinite modules indexed over a profinite space has been found to be useful in the study of homology of profinite groups, but hitherto the appropriate dual construction for studying cohomology with coefficients in discrete modules has not been studied. This paper remedies this gap in the theory.

Relative extensions and cohomology of profinite groups

We construct a correspondence between the cohomology groups of a group $G$ relative to a family of subgroups $\famS$ and the classes of `relative extensions' of $G$ by abelian groups, modulo a certain equivalence relation. We establish this correspondence for both discrete and profinite group pairs. We go on to discuss the relationships of profinite group pairs of cohomological dimension one with free products and projective group pairs.

$\ell^2$ Betti numbers and coherence of random groups

We study $\ell^2$ Betti numbers, coherence, and virtual fibring of random groups in the few-relator model. In particular, random groups with negative Euler characteristic are coherent, have $\ell^2$ homology concentrated in dimension 1, and embed in a virtually free-by-cyclic group with high probability. Similar results are shown with positive probability in the zero Euler characteristic case.

Virtually abelian quotients of random groups

It is well-known that random groups with at least as many relators as generators have vanishing first betti number with high probability. In this paper we extend this question and study maps from few-relators random groups to infinite virtually abelian groups.

On accessibility for pro-$p$ groups

We define the notion of accessibility for a pro-$p$ group. We prove that finitely generated pro-$p$ groups are accessible given a bound on the size of their finite subgroups. We then construct a finitely generated inaccessible pro-$p$ group, and also a finitely generated inaccessible discrete group which is residually $p$-finite.

Classification of pro-$p$ PD$^2$ pairs and the pro-$p$ curve complex

We classify pro-$p$ Poincaré duality pairs in dimension two. We then use this classification to build a pro-$p$ analogue of the curve complex and establish its basic properties. We conclude with some statements concerning separability properties of the mapping class group.

Profinite completions, cohomology and JSJ decompositions of compact 3-manifolds

In this paper we extend previous results concerning the behaviour of JSJ decompositions of closed 3-manifolds with respect to the profinite completion to the case of compact 3-manifolds with boundary. We also illustrate an alternative and perhaps more natural approach to part of the original theorem, using relative cohomology to analyse the actions of an-annular atoroidal groups on profinite trees.

Profinite rigidity of graph manifolds, II: knots and mapping classes

In this paper we study some consequences of the author's classification of graph manifolds by their profinite fundamental groups. In particular we study commensurability, the behaviour of knots, and relation to mapping classes. We prove that the exteriors of graph knots are distinguished among all 3-manifold groups by their profinite fundamental groups. We also prove a strong conjugacy separability result for certain mapping classes of surfaces.

Relative cohomology theory for profinite groups

In this paper we define and develop the theory of the cohomology of a profinite group relative to a collection of closed subgroups. Having made the relevant definitions we establish a robust theory of cup products and use this theory to define profinite Poincaré duality pairs. We use the theory of groups acting on profinite trees to give Mayer-Vietoris sequences, and apply this to give results concerning decompositions of 3-manifold groups. Finally we discuss the relationship between discrete duality pairs and profinite duality pairs, culminating in the result that profinite completion of the fundamental group of a compact aspherical 3-manifold is a profinite Poincaré duality group relative to the profinite completions of the fundamental groups of its boundary components.

Profinite rigidity of graph manifolds and JSJ decompositions of 3-manifolds

There has been much recent interest into those properties of a 3-manifold determined by the profinite completion of its fundamental group. In this paper we give readily computable criteria specifying precisely when two orientable graph manifold groups have isomorphic profinite completions. Our results also distinguish graph manifolds among the class of all 3-manifolds and give information about the structure of totally hyperbolic manifolds, and give control over the pro-$p$ completion of certain graph manifold groups.

Virtual pro-$p$ properties of 3-manifold groups

We answer a question of Aschenbrenner and Friedl regarding virtual $p$-efficiency for 3-manifold groups. We then study conjugacy $p$-separability and prove results for Fuchsian groups, Seifert fibre spaces and graph manifolds.

Profinite properties of RAAGs and special groups

In this paper we prove that RAAGs are distinguished from each other by their pro-$p$ completions for any choice of prime $p$, and that RACGs are distinguished from each other by their pro-2 completions. We also give a new proof that hyperbolic virtually special groups are good in the sense of Serre. Furthermore we give an example of a property of the underlying graph of a RAAG that translates to a property of the profinite completion.

Profinite rigidity for Seifert fibre spaces

An interesting question is whether two 3-manifolds can be distinguished by computing and comparing their collections of finite covers; more precisely, by the profinite completions of their fundamental groups. In this paper, we solve this question completely for closed orientable Seifert fibre spaces. In particular, all Seifert fibre spaces are distinguished from each other by their profinite completions apart from some previously-known examples due to Hempel. We also characterize when bounded Seifert fibre space groups have isomorphic profinite completions, given some conditions on the boundary.
