Gauge-string duality, monomial bases and graph determinants

Questions at the intersection of the AdS/CFT correspondence and quantum information theory motivate the study of projectors in sequences of subalgebras of finite-dimensional commutative associative semisimple algebras $\mathcal{A}$, obtained by incrementally adjoining one generator at each step to produce a non-linear generating set for $\mathcal{A}$. We define degeneracy graphs, which are finite layered tree graphs whose nodes represent projectors in the successive subalgebras. Using combinatorial properties of the degeneracy graph, we give a simple formula for constructing a linear basis of $\mathcal{A}$ in terms of monomials in the generators. The nodes can be labelled by formal variables corresponding to the eigenvalues of the generators added at each layer. We prove that the construction is compatible with the required counting of projectors in $\mathcal{A}$, and give explicit constructions of the projectors in terms of the monomials, in the cases of one- and two-layer degeneracy graphs with arbitrary numbers of nodes. More generally, we provide extensive computational evidence for the invertibility of the matrix relating the proposed monomial basis to the projector basis, by evaluating its determinant. In the 1-layer case, this is a Vandermonde determinant. A simple formula for the non-vanishing determinant in the general layer case is conjectured and supported by the computational data. The construction is illustrated with examples including centres of symmetric group algebras and maximally commuting subalgebras generated by JucysMurphy elements. We outline applications of the monomial basis to algorithms for constructing matrix units in non-commutative semisimple algebras, with relevance to orthogonal bases of multi-matrix gauge-invariant operators and to quantum information theory.

Collective Theory at Finite-$N$: Reduction of the Emergent Hilbert Space

Continuing the formulation of finite $N$ Hilbert spaces in emergent theories we study in this work $S_{N}$ symmetric collective models. For the case of $N$ bosons in $d$ dimensions, which map to matrix models with commuting matrices, we describe a complete algorithm and give a detailed case study reproducing the expected primaries and determining secondary invariants at each bidegree (a Hironaka decomposition). The method is based on null spaces (of the full collective theory) which are seen to yield all the independent trace relations, reducing the construction to linear algebra. As a stringent check, of our algorithm, we have verified that the system of invariants generates a subset of gauge invariant operators with no redundancies. This results in a reduction of the Hilbert space, in particular the gauge invariant secondary invariants realize an emergent Fock space with finite-$N$ occupation-numbers.

Bilocal holography and locality in the bulk

Bilocal holography provides a constructive approach to the vector model/higher spin gravity duality. It has two ingredients: a change of field variables and a change of space time coordinates. The change of field variables ensures that the loop expansion parameter becomes ${1\over N}$. The change of coordinates solves the Clebsch-Gordan problem of moving from the tensor product basis (in which the collective bilocal field is written) to the direct sum basis (appropriate for the description of the gravity fields). We argue that the change of space time coordinates can be deduced by requiring that operators constructed in the bilocal collective field theory are dual to local operators in the AdS bulk.

A generalized dominance ordering for 1/2-BPS states

We discuss a generalized dominance ordering for irreducible representations of the symmetric group $S_{n}$ with the aim of distinguishing the corresponding states in the 1/2-BPS sector of $U(N)$ Super Yang-Mills theory when a certain finite number of Casimir operators are known. Having knowledge of a restricted set of Casimir operators was proposed as a mechanism for information loss in this sector and its dual gravity theory in AdS$_{5}\times S^{5}$. It is well-known that the states in this sector are labeled by Young diagrams with $n$ boxes. We propose a generalization of the well-known dominance ordering of Young diagrams. Using this generalization, we posit a conjecture to determine an upper bound for the number of Casimir operators needed to distinguish between the 1/2-BPS states and thus also between their duals in the gravity theory. We offer numerical and analytic evidence for the conjecture. Lastly, we discuss implications of this conjecture when the energy $n$ of the states is asymptotically large.

Holography of Information in AdS/CFT

The principle of the holography of information states that in a theory of quantum gravity a copy of all the information available on a Cauchy slice is also available near the boundary of the Cauchy slice. This redundancy in the theory is already present at low energy. In the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence, this principle can be translated into a statement about the dual conformal field theory. We carry out this translation and demonstrate that the principle of the holography of information holds in bilocal holography.

Integrality, Duality and Finiteness in Combinatoric Topological Strings

A remarkable result at the intersection of number theory and group theory states that the order of a finite group $G$ (denoted $|G|$) is divisible by the dimension $d_R$ of any irreducible complex representation of $G$. We show that the integer ratios ${ |G|^2 / d_R^2 } $ are combinatorially constructible using finite algorithms which take as input the amplitudes of combinatoric topological strings ($G$-CTST) of finite groups based on 2D Dijkgraaf-Witten topological field theories ($G$-TQFT2). The ratios are also shown to be eigenvalues of handle creation operators in $G$-TQFT2/$G$-CTST. These strings have recently been discussed as toy models of wormholes and baby universes by Marolf and Maxfield, and Gardiner and Megas. Boundary amplitudes of the $G$-TQFT2/$G$-CTST provide algorithms for combinatoric constructions of normalized characters. Stringy S-duality for closed $G$-CTST gives a dual expansion generated by disconnected entangled surfaces. There are universal relations between $G$-TQFT2 amplitudes due to the finiteness of the number $K $ of conjugacy classes. These relations can be labelled by Young diagrams and are captured by null states in an inner product constructed by coupling the $G$-TQFT2 to a universal TQFT2 based on symmetric group algebras. We discuss the scenario of a 3D holographic dual for this coupled theory and the implications of the scenario for the factorization puzzle of 2D/3D holography raised by wormholes in 3D.

Lazy Open Quantum Walks

Open quantum walks (OQWs) describe a quantum walker on an underlying graph whose dynamics is purely driven by dissipation and decoherence. Mathematically, they are formulated as completely positive trace preserving (CPTP) maps on the space of density matrices for the walker on the graph. Any microscopically derived OQW must include the possibility of remaining on the same site on the graph when the map is applied. We extend the CPTP map to describe a lazy OQW. We derive a central limit theorem for lazy OQWs on a $d$-dimensional lattice, where the distribution converges to a Gaussian. We show that the properties of this Gaussian computed using conventional methods agree with the general formulas derived from our central limit theorem.

BPS states, conserved charges and centres of symmetric group algebras

In $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM with $U(N)$ gauge symmetry, the multiplicity of half-BPS states with fixed dimension can be labelled by Young diagrams and can be distinguished using conserved charges corresponding to Casimirs of $U(N)$. The information theoretic study of LLM geometries and superstars in the dual $AdS_5 \times S^5$ background has raised a number of questions about the distinguishability of Young diagrams when a finite set of Casimirs are known. Using Schur-Weyl duality relations between unitary groups and symmetric groups, these questions translate into structural questions about the centres of symmetric group algebras. We obtain analytic and computational results about these structural properties and related Shannon entropies, and generate associated number sequences. A characterization of Young diagrams in terms of content distribution functions relates these number sequences to diophantine equations. These content distribution functions can be visualized as connected, segmented, open strings in content space.

Matrices, Fermi Operators and Applications

We consider the vector space of $n \times n$ matrices over $\mathbb C$, Fermi operators and operators constructed from these matrices and Fermi operators. The properties of these operators are studied with respect to the underlying matrices. The commutators, anticommutators, and the eigenvalue problem of such operators are also discussed. Other matrix functions such as the exponential functions are studied. Density operators and Kraus operators are also discussed.

Counting paths with Schur transitions

In this work we explore the structure of the branching graph of the unitary group using Schur transitions. We find that these transitions suggest a new combinatorial expression for counting paths in the branching graph. This formula, which is valid for any rank of the unitary group, reproduces known asymptotic results. We proceed to establish the general validity of this expression by a formal proof. The form of this equation strongly hints towards a quantum generalization. Thus, we introduce a notion of quantum relative dimension and subject it to the appropriate consistency tests. This new quantity finds its natural environment in the context of RCFTs and fractional statistics; where the already established notion of quantum dimension has proven to be of great physical importance.

SO(N) restricted Schur polynomials

We focus on the 1/4-BPS sector of free super Yang-Mills theory with an SO(N) gauge group. This theory has an AdS/CFT dual in the form of type IIB string theory with AdS_5 X RP^5 geometry. With the aim of studying excited giant graviton dynamics, we construct an orthogonal basis for this sector of the gauge theory in this work. First, we demonstrate that the counting of states, as given by the partition function, and the counting of restricted Schur polynomials matches by restricting to a particular class of Young diagram labels. We then give an explicit construction of these gauge invariant operators and evaluate their two-point function exactly. This paves the way to studying the spectral problem of these operators and their D-brane duals.

Restricted Schurs and correlators for SO(N) and Sp(N)

In a recent work, restricted Schur polynomials have been argued to form a complete orthogonal set of gauge invariant operators for the 1/4-BPS sector of free N = 4 super Yang-Mills theory with an SO(N) gauge group. In this work, we extend these results to the theory with an Sp(N) gauge group. Using these operators, we develop techniques to compute correlation functions of any multi-trace operators with two scalar fields exactly in the free theory limit for both SO(N) and Sp(N).

Nonplanar integrability at two loops

In this article we compute the action of the two loop dilatation operator on restricted Schur polynomials that belong to the su(2) sector, in the displaced corners approximation. In this non-planar large N limit, operators that diagonalize the one loop dilatation operator are not corrected at two loops. The resulting spectrum of anomalous dimensions is related to a set of decoupled harmonic oscillators, indicating integrability in this sector of the theory at two loops. The anomalous dimensions are a non-trivial function of the 't Hooft coupling, with a spectrum that is continuous and starting at zero at large N, but discrete at finite N.

From Large N Nonplanar Anomalous Dimensions to Open Spring Theory

In this note we compute the non-planar one loop anomalous dimension of restricted Schur polynomials that have a bare dimension of O(N). This is achieved by mapping the restricted Schur polynomials into states of a specific U(N) irreducible representation. In this way the dilatation operator is mapped into a u(n) valued operator and, as a result, can easily be diagonalized. The resulting spectrum is reproduced by a classical model of springs between masses.
