Investigating Partons' Transverse Spin with Deep Inelastic Exclusive Experiments

We show how deeply virtual pseudoscalar meson production experiments single out the contribution of the four chiral odd quark-proton GPDs which are related to the so far elusive transversity distribution function, $h_1$. Furthermore, in the kinematical ranges of the proposed EIC, electroproduction of strange and charmed mesons will allow one to uniquely pin down the non-perturbative charmed component in the nucleon structure function, and at the same time provide new insights in the connection of the quark/gluon degrees of freedom with the meson-baryon description. The use of dispersion relations as well as the naive extension of the parton model to the ERBL region are critically analyzed.

Flexible Parametrization of Generalized Parton Distributions from Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering Observables

We present a physically motivated parametrization of the chiral-even generalized parton distributions in the non-singlet sector obtained from a global analysis using a set of available experimental data. Our analysis is valid in the kinematical region of intermediate Bjorken $x$ and for $Q^2$ in the multi-GeV region which is accessible at present and currently planned facilities. Relevant data included in our fit are from the nucleon elastic form factors measurements, from deep inelastic scattering experiments. Additional information provided by lattice calculations of the higher moments of generalized parton distributions, is also considered. Recently extracted observables from Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering on the nucleon are reproduced by our fit.

Pseudoscalar Meson Electroproduction and Tranversity

Exclusive meson leptoproduction from nucleons in the deeply virtual exchanged boson limit can be described by generalized parton distributions (GPDs). Including spin dependence in the description requires 8 independent quark-parton and gluon-parton functions. The chiral even subset of 4 quark-nucleon GPDs are related to nucleon form factors and to parton distribution functions. The chiral odd set of 4 quark-nucleon GPDs are related to transversity, the tensor charge, and other quantities related to transversity. Different meson or photon production processes access different combinations of GPDs. This is analyzed in terms of $t$-channel exchange quantum numbers, $J^{PC}$ and it is shown that pseudoscalar production can isolate chiral odd GPDs. There is a sensitive dependence in various cross sections and asymmetries on the tensor charge of the nucleon and other transversity parameters. In a second section, analyticity and completeness are shown to limit the partonic interpretation of the GPDs in the ERBL region.

We also consider, briefly, the analyticity of the GPDs and the problems with the partonic interpretation in the ERBL region.

Partonic Interpretation of Generalized Parton Distributions

Generalized Parton Distributions describe, within QCD factorization, the non perturbative component in the amplitudes for deeply virtual exclusive processes. However, in order for a partonic interpretation to hold, semi-disconnected diagrams should not contribute. We show that this condition is not satisfied for non-forward kinematics at leading order, and that gluon mediated re-interactions are essential for a consistent description in terms of parton degrees of freedom.

Deeply Virtual Neutrino Production of $π^0$ from Nucleon and Nuclear Targets

In most experiments aimed at determining the masses and mixing parameters for neutrino oscillations in different energy regimes there are strong backgrounds to neutrino interactions with matter that can confuse the expected small signals. One particular set of backgrounds is due to neutrino production of mesons, particularly pions, from nucleon or nuclear targets. It is especially important and theoretically interesting in itself to study $coherent$ neutrino production of pions, i.e. wherein the target does not break up. Preserving the target requires that the meson produced in the reaction will be charged for Charged Current (CC) interactions or neutral for Neutral Current (NC) interactions. Coherent scattering is the weak analog of exclusive neutral meson electroproduction for which considerable progress has been made in understanding the intermediate energy, small momentum transfer region by applying the Generalized Parton Distribution (GPD) phenomenology. The GPD perspective will be explained with emphasis on how the understanding gained from electroproduction of neutral pions can carry over to the neutrino processes.

Limitations on dispersion relations for Generalized Parton Distributions

Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering and electroproduction of mesons involve amplitudes that are analytic in energy. Analyticity enables Dispersion Relations (DR's) for such amplitudes, relating real and imaginary parts. Lately it has been suggested that DR's be applied to the integrated Generalized Parton Distributions that embody the spin-dependent soft, but factorizable part of the scattering. However, at non-zero momentum transfer, DRs require integration over unphysical regions of the variables. We show that the relevant unphysical region of the non-forward DRs is considerable, vitiating efforts to avoid the actual measurement of the real parts more directly.

Accessing Generalized Transversity Distributions with Exclusive $π^o$ Electroproduction

Exclusive $π^0$ electroproduction from nucleons at large $Q^2$ can be described by Generalized Parton Distributions (GPDs), particularly the chiral odd subset related to transversity. These GPDs can be accessed experimentally from various cross sections and asymmetries. We calculate these GPDs in a spectator model, constrained by boundary functions. Alternatively, in a hadronic picture the meson production amplitudes correspond to C-odd Regge exchanges with final state interactions. The helicity structure provides relations between the partonic and the hadronic, Regge description of C-odd, chiral-odd processes. Calculations show how the tensor charge and other transversity parameters can be

The Use of Dispersion Relations in Hard Exclusive Processes and the Partonic Interpretation of Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering

Recently dispersion relations have been applied to hard exclusive processes such as deeply virtual Compton scattering, and a holographic principle was proposed that maps out the generalized parton distributions entering the soft matrix elements for the processes from their values on a given kinematical ridge. We examine possible pitfalls associated with the implicit, direct identification in this approach of the physical hadronic states with colored partons, and suggest an improved treatment of this assumption.

Exclusive Meson Electroproduction: GPDs, Regge and Dispersion Relations

Exclusive pi0 electroproduction from nucleons at large photon virtuality can be described in terms of Generalized Parton Distributions, particularly the chiral odd subset. Chiral odd GPDs are related to transversity and can be accessed experimentally for various special choices of observables. This is accomplished by choosing C-parity odd and chiral odd combinations of t-channel exchange quantum numbers. These GPDs are calculated in a spectator model, and are constrained by boundary functions. Alternatively, the production amplitudes correspond to C-odd Regge exchanges with final state interactions. The helicity structure of the virtual photoproduction amplitudes provides relations between the partonic description via GPDs and the hadronic, Regge description of C-odd processes, all via quark helicity flip. GPDs, in general, are analytic functions of energy variables. Their integrals over unobservable parton momenta thereby satisfy Dispersion Relations (DR). Using DR's could allow the real part of the amplitudes, the integrated GPDs, to be extracted from the more easily measured imaginary parts. However, at non-zero momentum transfer DRs require integration over unphysical regions of the variables. We show that the relevant unphysical region of the non-forward DRs is considerable. This will vitiate the efforts to avoid the actual measurement of the real parts more directly.

Transversity via Exclusive pi0 Electroproduction

Exclusive pi0 electroproduction from nucleons can be related to transversity, the tensor charge, and other quantities related to transversity. This process isolates C-parity odd and chiral odd combinations of t-channel exchange quantum numbers. In a hadronic picture the meson production amplitudes for intermediate energy and Q are determined by C-odd Regge exchanges with final state interactions. The helicity structure for this C-odd process relates to the quark helicity flip, or chiral odd generalized parton distributions (GPDs).Various cross sections and asymmetries will be sensitive to the transversity.

Exclusive Pion-production and the Relation to Transversity

Exclusive $π^0$ electroproduction from nucleons is suggested for extracting the tensor charge and other quantities related to transversity from experimental data. This process isolates C-parity odd and chiral odd combinations of t-channel exchange quantum numbers. In a hadronic picture it connects the meson production amplitudes to C-odd Regge exchanges with final state interactions. In a description based on partonic degrees of freedom, the helicity structure for this C-odd process relates to the quark helicity flip, or chiral odd generalized parton distributions.

Chiral-Odd Generalized Parton Distributions from Exclusive pi^o Electroproduction

Exclusive $π^o$ electroproduction is suggested for extracting both the tensor charge and the transverse anomalous magnetic moment from experimental data. A connection between partonic degrees of freedom, given in terms of Generalized Parton Distributions, and Regge phenomenology is discussed. Calculations are performed using a physically motivated parametrization that is valid at values of the skewness, $ζ\neq 0$. Our method makes use of information from the nucleon form factor data, from deep inelastuc scattering parton distribution functions, and from lattice results on the Mellin moments of generalized parton distributions. It provides, therefore, a step towards a model independent extraction of generalized distributions from the data, alternative to other mathematical ansatze available in the literature.

Transverse Quark Spin Effects and the Flavor Dependence of the Boer-Mulders Function

The naive time reversal odd (``T-odd'') parton distribution $h_{1}^{\perp}$, the so-called Boer-Mulders function, for both up ($u$) and down ($d$) quarks is considered in the diquark spectator model. While the results of different articles in the literature suggest that the signs of the Boer-Mulders function in semi-inclusive DIS for both flavors $u$ and $d$ are the same and negative, a previous calculation in the diquark-spectator model found that $h_{1}^{\perp(u)}$ and $h_{1}^{\perp(d)}$ have different signs. The flavor dependence is of significance for the analysis of the azimuthal $\cos(2ϕ)$ asymmetries in unpolarized SIDIS and DY-processes, as well as for the overall physical understanding of the distribution of transversely polarized quarks in unpolarized nucleons. We find substantial differences with previous work. In particular we obtain half and first moments of Boer-Mulders function that are negative over the full range in Bjorken $x$ for both the $u$- and $d$- quarks. In conjunction with the Collins function we then predict the $\cos(2ϕ)$ azimuthal asymmetry for $π^{+}$ and $π^{-}$ in this framework. We also find that the Sivers $u$- and $d$- quark are negative and positive respectively. As a by-product of the formalism, we calculate the chiral-odd but ``T-even'' function $h_{1L}^{\perp}$, which allows us to present a prediction for the single spin asymmetry $A_{UL}^{\sin(2ϕ)}$ for a longitudinally polarized target in SIDIS.

$π^o$ Electroproduction and Transversity

The connection between a description based on partonic degrees of freedom, given in terms of generalized parton distributions, and Regge phenomenology is explored.

Collins fragmentation function for pions and kaons in a spectator model

We calculate the Collins fragmentation function in the framework of a spectator model with pseudoscalar pion-quark coupling and a Gaussian form factor at the vertex. We determine the model parameters by fitting the unpolarized fragmentation function for pions and kaons. We show that the Collins function for the pions in this model is in reasonable agreement with recent parametrizations obtained by fits of the available data. In addition, we compute for the first time the Collins function for the kaons.

Baryons and Mesons with Beauty

Recent experimental findings of several mesons and baryons with "beauty" and "charm" as flavors remind us of the days when strangeness was discovered, and how its inclusion led to SU(3)-flavor symmetry with enormous success in the classification of the "proliferated" states into SU(3) multiplets. One of the key elements was the successful application of the first order perturbation in symmetry breaking, albeit what then appeared to be huge mass differences, and the prediction of new states that were confirmed by experiments. In this note, we venture into the past and, applying the same techniques, predict some new "beauty-" and "charm-" flavored hadrons. If these new states are confirmed experimentally, it may provide a useful phenomenological model for classifying numerous states that are found to be in the PDG data and could invite further theoretical challenges towards our understanding of symmetry breaking.
