Bulk-boundary dictionary for a non local bulk field

AdS/CFT correspondence gives us a bulk-boundary dictionary between CFT operators and local fields in the bulk. Can a bulk-boundary dictionary exist for a non local bulk field? In this paper we consider a particular non local theory and show that a bulk boundary dictionary relating it to CFT operators in the bulk can indeed be constructed. In this dictionary the scale of non locality of the bulk theory is related to the conformal dimension of the dual CFT operator.

Non-locality and late-time cosmic acceleration from an ultraviolet complete theory

A local phenomenological model that reduces to a non-local gravitational theory giving dark energy is proposed. The non-local gravity action is known to fit the data as well as $Λ$-CDM thereby demanding a more fundamental local treatment. It is seen that the scale-invariant higher-derivative scalar-tensor theory of gravity, which is known to be ultraviolet perturbative renormalizable to all loops and where ghosts become innocuous, generates non-locality at low energies. The local action comprises of two real scalar fields coupled non-minimally with the higher-derivative gravity action. When one of the scalar acquiring the Vacuum Expectation Value (VEV) induces Einstein--Hilbert gravity, generates mass for fields, and gets decoupled from system, it leaves behind a residual theory which in turn leads to a non-local gravity generating dark energy effects.

Ultraviolet complete dark energy model

We consider a local phenomenological model to explain a non-local gravity scenario which has been proposed to address dark energy issues. This non-local gravity action has been seen to fit the data as well as $Λ$-CDM and therefore demands a more fundamental local treatment. The induced gravity model coupled with higher-derivative gravity is exploited for this proposal, as this perturbatively renormalizable model has a well-defined ultraviolet (UV) description where ghosts are evaded. We consider a generalised version of this model where we consider two coupled scalar fields and their non-minimal coupling with gravity. In this simple model, one of the scalar field acquires a Vacuum Expectation Value (VEV), thereby inducing a mass for one of the scalar fields and generating Newton's constant. The induced mass however is seen to be always above the running energy scale thereby leading to its decoupling. The residual theory after decoupling becomes a platform for driving the accelerated expansion under certain conditions. Integrating out the residual scalar generates a non-local gravity action. The leading term of which is the non-local gravity action used to fit the data of dark energy.

Signs and Stability in Higher-Derivative Gravity

Perturbatively renormalizable higher-derivative gravity in four space-time dimensions with arbitrary signs of couplings has been considered. Systematic analysis of the action with arbitrary signs of couplings in lorentzian flat space-time for no-tachyons, fixes the signs. Feynman $+iε$ prescription for these sign further grants necessary convergence in path-integral, suppressing the field modes with large action. This also leads to a sensible wick rotation where quantum computation can be performed. Running couplings for these sign of parameters makes the massive tensor ghost innocuous leading to a stable and ghost-free renormalizable theory in four space-time dimensions. The theory has a transition point arising from renormalisation group (RG) equations, where the coefficient of $R^2$ diverges without affecting the perturbative quantum field theory. Redefining this coefficient gives a better handle over the theory around the transition point. The flow equations pushes the flow of parameters across the transition point. The flow beyond the transition point is analysed using the one-loop RG equations which shows that the regime beyond the transition point has unphysical properties: there are tachyons, the path-integral loses positive definiteness, Newton's constant $G$ becomes negative and large, and perturbative parameters become large. These shortcomings indicate a lack of completeness beyond the transition point and need of a non-perturbative treatment of the theory beyond the transition point.

On the Renormalization Group perspective of $α$-attractors

In this short paper we outline a recipe for the reconstruction of $F(R)$ gravity starting from single field inflationary potentials in the Einstein frame. For simple potentials one can compute the explicit form of $F(R)$, whilst for more involved examples one gets a parametric form of $F(R)$. The $F(R)$ reconstruction algorithm is used to study various examples: power-law $ϕ^n$, exponential and $α$-attractors. In each case it is seen that for large $R$ (corresponding to large value of inflaton field), $F(R) \sim R^2$. For the case of $α$-attractors $F(R) \sim R^2$ for all values of inflaton field (for all values of $R$) as $α\to0$. For generic inflaton potential $V(ϕ)$, it is seen that if $V^\prime/V \to0$ (for some $ϕ$) then the corresponding $F(R) \sim R^2$. We then study $α$-attractors in more detail using non-perturbative renormalisation group methods to analyse the reconstructed $F(R)$. It is seen that $α\to0$ is an ultraviolet stable fixed point of the renormalisation group trajectories.

Exorcising Ghosts in Induced Gravity

Unitarity of scale-invariant coupled theory of higher-derivative gravity and matter is investigated. A scalar field coupled with dirac fermion is taken as matter sector.Following the idea of induced gravity Einstein-Hilbert term is generated via dynamical symmetry breaking of scale-invariance. The renormalisation group flows are computed and one-loop RG improved effective potential of scalar is calculated. Scalar field develops a new minimum via Coleman-Weinberg procedure inducing Newton's constant and masses in the matter sector. The spin-2 problematic ghost and the spin-0 mode of the metric fluctuation gets a mass in the broken phase of theory. The energy-dependence of VeV in the RG improved scenario implies a running for the induced parameters. This sets up platform to ask whether it is possible to evade the spin-2 ghost by keeping its mass always above the running energy scale? In broken phase this question is satisfactorily answered for a large domain of coupling parameter space where the ghost is evaded. The spin-0 mode can be made physically realisable or not depending upon the choice of initial parameters. Induced Newton's constant is seen to vanishes in ultraviolet. By properly choosing parameters it is possible to make the matter fields physically unrealisable.

Mother canonical tensor model

Canonical tensor model (CTM) is a tensor model formulated in the Hamilton formalism as a totally constrained system with first class constraints, the algebraic structure of which is very similar to that of the ADM formalism of general relativity. It has recently been shown that a formal continuum limit of the classical equation of motion of CTM in a derivative expansion of the tensor up to the fourth derivatives agrees with that of a coupled system of general relativity and a scalar field in the Hamilton-Jacobi formalism. This suggests the existence of a "mother" tensor model which derives CTM through the Hamilton-Jacobi procedure, and we have successfully found such a "mother" CTM (mCTM) in this paper. The quantization of mCTM is straightforward as CTM. However, we have not been able to identify all the secondary constraints, and therefore the full structure of the model has been left for future study. Nonetheless, we have found some exact physical wave functions and classical phase spaces which can be shown to solve the primary and all the (possibly infinite) secondary constraints in the quantum and classical cases, respectively, and have thereby proven the non-triviality of the model. It has also been shown that mCTM has more interesting dynamics than CTM from the perspective of randomly connected tensor networks.

An $OSp$ extension of Canonical Tensor Model

Tensor models are generalizations of matrix models, and are studied as discrete models of quantum gravity for arbitrary dimensions. Among them, the canonical tensor model (CTM for short) is a rank-three tensor model formulated as a totally constrained system with a number of first-class constraints, which have a similar algebraic structure as the constraints of the ADM formalism of general relativity. In this paper, we formulate a super-extension of CTM as an attempt to incorporate fermionic degrees of freedom. The kinematical symmetry group is extended from $O(N)$ to $OSp(N,\tilde N)$, and the constraints are constructed so that they form a first-class constraint super-Poisson algebra. This is a straightforward super-extension, and the constraints and their algebraic structure are formally unchanged from the purely bosonic case, except for the additional signs associated to the order of the fermionic indices and dynamical variables. However, this extension of CTM leads to the existence of negative norm states in the quantized case, and requires some future improvements as quantum gravity with fermions. On the other hand, since this is a straightforward super-extension, various results obtained so far for the purely bosonic case are expected to have parallels also in the super-extended case, such as the exact physical wave functions and the connection to the dual statistical systems, i.e. randomly connected tensor networks.

Green's function of the Vector fields on DeSitter Background

In this paper we study the propagator of a vector fields on a euclidean maximally-symmetric background in arbitrary space-time dimensions. We study two cases of interest: Massive and massless vector fields. In each case we computed the propagator of the vector fields on euclidean deSitter background, isolating the transverse and longitudinal part. In both case of massive and massless vector fields, the short distance limit of the full propagator agrees with the flat space-time propagator. In the case of massive propagator, the transverse part has a well defined massless limit, and in this limit it goes to the transverse propagator for the massless fields. The transverse propagator for antipodal point separation is nonzero and negative, but vanishes in the flat space-time limit (Ricci scalar going to zero). The longitudinal part of the massive propagator diverges as $1/m^2$, where $m$ is the mass of the field. The longitudinal part of the massless propagator is gauge dependent and in particular is proportional to the gauge parameter used in the gauge fixing condition. It vanishes in the Landau gauge. Comparison with the past literature is made.

Physical states in the canonical tensor model from the perspective of random tensor networks

Tensor models, generalization of matrix models, are studied aiming for quantum gravity in dimensions larger than two. Among them, the canonical tensor model is formulated as a totally constrained system with first-class constraints, the algebra of which resembles the Dirac algebra of general relativity. When quantized, the physical states are defined to be vanished by the quantized constraints. In explicit representations, the constraint equations are a set of partial differential equations for the physical wave-functions, which do not seem straightforward to be solved due to their non-linear character. In this paper, after providing some explicit solutions for $N=2,3$, we show that certain scale-free integration of partition functions of statistical systems on random networks (or random tensor networks more generally) provides a series of solutions for general $N$. Then, by generalizing this form, we also obtain various solutions for general $N$. Moreover, we show that the solutions for the cases with a cosmological constant can be obtained from those with no cosmological constant for increased $N$. This would imply the interesting possibility that a cosmological constant can always be absorbed into the dynamics and is not an input parameter in the canonical tensor model. We also observe the possibility of symmetry enhancement in $N=3$, and comment on an extension of Airy function related to the solutions.

Running Couplings in Quantum Theory of Gravity Coupled with Gauge Fields

In this paper we study the coupled system of non-abelian gauge fields with higher-derivative gravity. Charge renormalization is investigated in this coupled system. It is found that the leading term in the gauge coupling beta function comes due to interaction of gauge fields with gravitons. This is shown to be a universal quantity in the sense that it doesn't depend on the gauge coupling and the gauge group, but may depend on the other couplings of the action (gravitational and matter). The coupled system is studied at one-loop. It is found that the leading term of gauge beta function is zero at one-loop in four dimensions. The effect of gauge fields on the running of gravitational couplings is investigated. The coupled system of gauge field with higher-derivative gravity is shown to satisfy unitarity when quantum corrections are taken in to account. Moreover, it is found that Newton constant goes to zero at short distances. In this renormalizable and unitary theory of gauge field coupled with higher-derivative gravity, the leading term of the gauge beta function, found to be universal for all gauge groups, is further studied in more detail by isolating it in the context of abelian gauge theories coupled with gravity in four dimensions. Using self-duality of abelian gauge theories in four dimensions, this term of the gauge beta function is shown to be zero to all loops. This is found to be independent of the gravity action, regularization scheme and gauge fixing condition. An explicit one-loop computation for arbitrary gravity action further demonstrates the vanishing of this term in the gauge beta function in four dimensions, independent of the regularization scheme and gauge fixing condition. Consequences of this are discussed.

Charge Renormalization due to Graviton Loops

The leading term in the gauge coupling beta function comes due to interaction of gauge field with gravitons. It is shown to be a universal quantity for all gauge theories. At one-loop it is found to be zero in four dimensions. This is independent of the gravity action with metric as the field variable, gauge fixing condition and regularization scheme. This term being universally same for all gauge groups is further studied in the case of abelian gauge theories, where due to self-duality this term is shown to be zero to all loops, on-shell. Consequences of this are discussed.

Unitary and Renormalizable Theory of Higher Derivative Gravity

In 3+1 space-time dimensions, fourth order derivative gravity is perturbatively renormalizable. Here it is shown that it describes a unitary theory of gravitons (with/without an additional scalar) in a limited coupling parameter space which includes standard cosmology. The running of gravitational constant which includes contribution of graviton is computed. It is shown that generically Newton's constant vanishes at short distance in this perturbatively renormalizable and unitary theory.

Renormalization Group Flow in Scalar-Tensor Theories. II

We study the UV behaviour of actions including integer powers of scalar curvature and even powers of scalar fields with Functional Renormalization Group techniques. We find UV fixed points where the gravitational couplings have non-trivial values while the matter ones are Gaussian. We prove several properties of the linearized flow at such a fixed point in arbitrary dimensions in the one-loop approximation and find recursive relations among the critical exponents. We illustrate these results in explicit calculations in $d=4$ for actions including up to four powers of scalar curvature and two powers of the scalar field. In this setting we notice that the same recursive properties among the critical exponents, which were proven at one-loop order, still hold, in such a way that the UV critical surface is found to be five dimensional. We then search for the same type of fixed point in a scalar theory with minimal coupling to gravity in $d=4$ including up to eight powers of scalar curvature. Assuming that the recursive properties of the critical exponents still hold, one would conclude that the UV critical surface of these theories is five dimensional.

On the scheme dependence of gravitational beta functions

We discuss the arbitrariness in the choice of cutoff scheme in calculations of beta functions. We define a class of "pure" cutoff schemes, in which the cutoff is completely independent of the parameters that appear in the action. In a sense they are at the opposite extreme of the "spectrally adjusted" cutoffs, which depend on all the parameters that appear in the action. We compare the results for the beta functions of Newton's constant and of the cosmological constant obtained with a typical cutoff and with a pure cutoff, keeping all else fixed. We find that the dependence of the fixed point on an arbitrary parameter in the pure cutoff is rather mild. We then show in general that if a spectrally adjusted cutoff produces a fixed point, there is a corresponding pure cutoff that will give a fixed point in the same position.

Renormalization Group Flow in Scalar-Tensor Theories. I

We study the renormalization group flow in a class of scalar-tensor theories involving at most two derivatives of the fields. We show in general that minimal coupling is self consistent, in the sense that when the scalar self couplings are switched off, their beta functions also vanish. Complete, explicit beta functions that could be applied to a variety of cosmological models are given in a five parameter truncation of the theory in $d=4$. In any dimension $d>2$ we find that the flow has only a "Gaussian Matter" fixed point, where all scalar self interactions vanish but Newton's constant and the cosmological constant are nontrivial. The properties of these fixed points can be studied algebraically to some extent. In $d=3$ we also find a gravitationally dressed version of the Wilson-Fisher fixed point, but it seems to have unphysical properties. These findings are in accordance with the hypothesis that these theories are asymptotically safe.

Analysis of music: controlled random music and probability distribution function of recurrence time of amplitude peaks

Correlations in music that exist within its waveform are studied. Monophonic wave files of random music are generated and the probability distribution function of time interval between large signal values is analyzed. A power law behavior for the distribution function in the range from 0.1 millisecond to 20 milliseconds is observed. An attempt is made to investigate the origin of these correlations by randomizing each of the factors (frequencies, intensities and durations of notes of the random music files) separately.
