Explicit composition identities for higher composition laws

In 2001, Bhargava proved a composition law for $2 \times 2 \times 2$ integer cubes, which generalized Gauss composition of integral binary quadratic forms. Furthermore, he derived four new composition laws defined on the following spaces: 1) binary cubic forms with triplicate middle coefficients, 2) pairs of binary quadratic forms with duplicate middle coefficients, 3) pairs of quaternary alternating 2-forms and 4) senary alternating 3-forms. In each of the five cases, there is a natural group action on the underlying space with a unique polynomial invariant called the discriminant, and a notion of projectivity for the elements of the space. The strategy behind Bhargava's approach is to construct a discriminant-preserving bijection between the set of orbits under the group action and the set of (tuples of) suitable ideal classes of quadratic rings. The projective ideal classes are equipped with a natural group structure and hence we get a group structure on the spaces of equivalence classes of projective forms of fixed discriminant $D$. In each case the class group of projective forms of discriminant $D$ has a natural interpretation in terms of the narrow class group of the quadratic ring of discriminant $D$. The aim of this paper is to give explicit composition identities (similar to Gauss' formulation of composition of binary quadratic forms) for these higher composition laws.

Most subrings of $\mathbb{Z}^n$ have large corank

If $Λ\subseteq \mathbb{Z}^n$ is a sublattice of index $m$, then $\mathbb{Z}^n/Λ$ is a finite abelian group of order $m$ and rank at most $n$. Several authors have studied statistical properties of these groups as we range over all sublattices of index at most $X$. In this paper we investigate quotients by sublattices that have additional algebraic structure. While quotients $\mathbb{Z}^n/Λ$ follow the Cohen-Lenstra heuristics and are very often cyclic, we show that if $Λ$ is actually a subring, then once $n \ge 7$ these quotients are very rarely cyclic. More generally, we show that once $n$ is large enough the quotient typically has very large rank. In order to prove our main theorems, we combine inputs from analytic number theory and combinatorics. We study certain zeta functions associated to $\mathbb{Z}^n$ and also prove several results about matrices in Hermite normal form whose columns span a subring of $\mathbb{Z}^n$.

The discrete analogue of the Gaussian

This paper illustrates the utility of the heat kernel on $\mathbb{Z}$ as the discrete analogue of the Gaussian density function. It is the two-variable function $K_{\mathbb{Z}}(t,x)=e^{-2t}I_{x}(2t)$ involving a Bessel function and variables $x\in\mathbb{Z}$ and real $t\geq 0$. Like its classic counterpart it appears in many mathematical and physical contexts and has a wealth of applications. Some of these will be reviewed here, concerning Bessel integrals, trigonometric sums, hypergeometric functions and asymptotics of discrete models appearing in statistical and quantum physics. Moreover, we prove a new local limit theorem for sums of integer-valued random variables, obtain novel special values of the spectral zeta function of Bethe lattices, and provide a discussion on how $e^{-2t}I_{x}(2t)$ could be useful in differential privacy.

The parametrix construction of the heat kernel on a graph

In this paper we develop the parametrix approach for constructing the heat kernel on a graph $G$. In particular, we highlight two specific cases. First, we consider the case when $G$ is embedded in a Eulidean domain or manifold $Ω$, and we use a heat kernel associated to $Ω$ to obtain a formula for the heat kernel on $G$. Second, we consider when $G$ is a subgraph of a larger graph $\widetilde{G}$, and we obtain a formula for the heat kernel on $G$ from the heat kernel on $\widetilde{G}$ restricted to $G$.

Random and mean Lyapunov exponents for $\mathrm{GL}_n(\mathbb{R})$

We consider orthogonally invariant probability measures on $\mathrm{GL}_n(\mathbb{R})$ and compare the mean of the logs of the moduli of eigenvalues of the matrices to the Lyapunov exponents of random matrix products independently drawn with respect to the measure. We give a lower bound for the former in terms of the latter. The results are motivated by Dedieu-Shub\cite{DS}. A novel feature of our treatment is the use of the theory of spherical polynomials in the proof of our main result.

The cotype zeta function of $\mathbb{Z}^d$

We give an asymptotic formula for the number of sublattices $Λ\subseteq \mathbb{Z}^d$ of index at most $X$ for which $\mathbb{Z}^d/Λ$ has rank at most $m$, answering a question of Nguyen and Shparlinski. We compare this result to recent work of Stanley and Wang on Smith Normal Forms of random integral matrices and discuss connections to the Cohen-Lenstra heuristics. Our arguments are based on Petrogradsky's formulas for the cotype zeta function of $\mathbb{Z}^d$, a multivariable generalization of the subgroup growth zeta function of $\mathbb{Z}^d$.

Planes in $\mathbb{Z^4}$ and Eisenstein series

We study the number of two-dimensional sublattices of $\mathbb{Z^4}$ of a fixed covolume and construct the associated Dirichlet series. The latter is shown to be related to Eisenstein series on both $GL_4$ and its metaplectic double cover.

Noncommutative modular symbols and Eisenstein series

We form real-analytic Eisenstein series twisted by Manin's noncommutative modular symbols. After developing their basic properties, these series are shown to have meromorphic continuations to the entire complex plane and satisfy functional equations in some cases. This theory neatly contains and generalizes earlier work in the literature on the properties of Eisenstein series twisted by classical modular symbols.

Metaplectic Demazure operators and Whittaker functions

In a previous paper the first two named authors defined an action of a Weyl group on rational functions and used it to construct multiple Dirichlet series. These series are related to Whittaker functions on an n-fold metaplectic cover of a reductive group. In this paper, we define metaplectic analogues of the Demazure and Demazure-Lusztig operators. We show how these operators, together with results of McNamara, can be used to compute Whittaker functions on metaplectic groups over p-adic fields.

Heat kernels on regular graphs and generalized Ihara zeta function formulas

We establish a new formula for the heat kernel on regular trees in terms of classical I-Bessel functions. Although the formula is explicit, and a proof is given through direct computation, we also provide a conceptual viewpoint using the horocyclic transform on regular trees. From periodization, we then obtain a heat kernel expression on any regular graph. From spectral theory, one has another expression for the heat kernel as an integral transform of the spectral measure. By equating these two formulas and taking a certain integral transform, we obtain several generalized versions of the determinant formula for the Ihara zeta function associated to finite or infinite regular graphs. Our approach to the Ihara zeta function and determinant formula through heat kernel analysis follows a similar methodology which exists for quotients of rank one symmetric spaces.

Complexity and heights of tori

We prove detailed asymptotics for the number of spanning trees, called complexity, for a general class of discrete tori as the parameters tend to infinity. The proof uses in particular certain ideas and techniques from an earlier paper. Our asymptotic formula provides a link between the complexity of these graphs and the height of associated real tori, and allows us to deduce some corollaries on the complexity thanks to certain results from analytic number theory. In this way we obtain a conjectural relationship between complexity and regular sphere packings.

Metaplectic Ice

Spherical Whittaker functions on the metaplectic n-fold cover of GL(r+1) over a nonarchimedean local field containing n distinct n-th roots of unity may be expressed as the partition functions of statistical mechanical systems that are variants of the six-vertex model. If n=1 then in view of the Casselman-Shalika formula this fact is related to Tokuyama's deformation of the Weyl character formula. It is shown that various properties of these Whittaker functions may be expressed in terms of the commutativity of row transfer matrices for the system. Potentially these properties (which are already proved by other methods, but very nontrivial) are amenable to proof by the Yang-Baxter equation.

Littelmann patterns and Weyl group multiple Dirichlet series of type D

We formulate a conjecture for the local parts of Weyl group multiple Dirichlet series attached to root systems of type D. Our conjecture is analogous to the description of the local parts of type A series given by Brubaker, Bump, Friedberg, and Hoffstein in terms of Gelfand--Tsetlin patterns. Our conjecture is given in terms of patterns for irreducible representations of even orthogonal Lie algebras developed by Littelmann.

Constructing Weyl group multiple Dirichlet series

Let Phi be a reduced root system of rank r. A Weyl group multiple Dirichlet series for Phi is a Dirichlet series in r complex variables s_1,...,s_r, initially converging for Re(s_i) sufficiently large, that has meromorphic continuation to C^r and satisfies functional equations under the transformations of C^r corresponding to the Weyl group of Phi. A heuristic definition of such series was given in [2], and they have been investigated in certain special cases in [2-6, 11-14]. In this paper we generalize results in [13] to construct Weyl group multiple Dirichlet series by a uniform method, and show in all cases that they have the expected properties.

Sums of $L$-functions over the rational function field

Friedberg, Hoffstein and Lieman have constructed two related multiple Dirichlet series from quadratic and higher-order $L$-functions and Gauss sums. We compute these multiple Dirichlet series explicitly in the case of the rational function field. This is done by utilizing the functional equation of the $L$-functions and the functional equation relating the two multiple Dirichlet series. We also point out a very simple correspondence between these series and their $p$-parts.

Weyl group multiple Dirichlet series of type A_2

A Weyl group multiple Dirichlet series is a Dirichlet series in several complex variables attached to a root system Phi. The number of variables equals the rank r of the root system, and the series satisfies a group of functional equations isomorphic to the Weyl group W of Phi. In this paper we construct a Weyl group multiple Dirichlet series over the rational function field using n-th order Gauss sums attached to the root system of type A_2. The basic technique is to construct a rational function in r variables invariant under a certain action of W, and use this to build a ``local factor'' of the global series.

On the p-parts of quadratic Weyl group multiple Dirichlet series

Let Phi be a reduced root system of rank r. A Weyl group multiple Dirichlet series for Phi is a Dirichlet series in r complex variables s_1,...,s_r, initially converging for Re(s_i) sufficiently large, which has meromorphic continuation to C^r and satisfies functional equations under the transformations of C^r corresponding to the Weyl group of Phi. Two constructions of such series are available, one based on summing products of n-th order Gauss sums, the second based on averaging a certain group action over the Weyl group. In this paper we study these constructions and the relationship between them, and give evidence that when n=2 and Phi=A_r they yield the same multiple Dirichlet series.
