Density Classification with Non-Unitary Quantum Cellular Automata

The density classification (DC) task, a computation which maps global density information to local density, is studied using one-dimensional non-unitary quantum cellular automata (QCAs). Two approaches are considered: one that preserves the number density and one that performs majority voting. For number preserving DC, two QCAs are introduced that reach the fixed point solution in a time scaling quadratically with the system size. One of the QCAs is based on a known classical probabilistic cellular automaton which has been studied in the context of DC. The second is a new quantum model that is designed to demonstrate additional quantum features and is restricted to only two-body interactions. Both can be generated by continuous-time Lindblad dynamics. A third QCA is a hybrid rule defined by both discrete-time and continuous-time three-body interactions that is shown to solve the majority voting problem within a time that scales linearly with the system size.

Proof-of-work consensus by quantum sampling

Since its advent in 2011, boson sampling has been a preferred candidate for demonstrating quantum advantage because of its simplicity and near-term requirements compared to other quantum algorithms. We propose to use a variant, called coarse-grained boson-sampling (CGBS), as a quantum Proof-of-Work (PoW) scheme for blockchain consensus. The users perform boson sampling using input states that depend on the current block information and commit their samples to the network. Afterwards, CGBS strategies are determined which can be used to both validate samples and reward successful miners. By combining rewards for miners committing honest samples together with penalties for miners committing dishonest samples, a Nash equilibrium is found that incentivizes honest nodes. We provide numerical evidence that these validation tests are hard to spoof classically without knowing the binning scheme ahead of time and show the robustness of our protocol to small partial distinguishability of photons. The scheme works for both Fock state boson sampling and Gaussian boson sampling and provides dramatic speedup and energy savings relative to computation by classical hardware.

Efficient Fault-Tolerant Quantum Protocol for Differential Privacy in the Shuffle Model

We present a quantum protocol which securely and implicitly implements a random shuffle to realize differential privacy in the shuffle model. The shuffle model of differential privacy amplifies privacy achievable via local differential privacy by randomly permuting the tuple of outcomes from data contributors. In practice, one needs to address how this shuffle is implemented. Examples include implementing the shuffle via mix-networks, or shuffling via a trusted third-party. These implementation specific issues raise non-trivial computational and trust requirements in a classical system. We propose a quantum version of the protocol using entanglement of quantum states and show that the shuffle can be implemented without these extra requirements. Our protocol implements k-ary randomized response, for any value of k > 2, and furthermore, can be efficiently implemented using fault-tolerant computation.

Categorical Quantum Volume Operator

We present a generalization of the quantum volume operator quantifying the volume in curved three-dimensional discrete geometries. In its standard form, the quantum volume operator is constructed from tetrahedra whose faces are endowed with irreducible representations of $\mathrm{SU}(2)$. Here, we show two equivalent constructions that allow general objects in fusion categories as degrees of freedom. First, we compute the volume operator for ribbon fusion categories. This includes the important class of modular tensor categories (such as quantum doubles), which are the building blocks of anyon models. Second, we further generalize the volume operator to spherical fusion categories by relaxing the categorical analog of the closure constraint (known as tetrahedral symmetry). In both cases, we obtain a volume operator that is Hermitian, provided that the input category is unitary. As an illustrative example, we consider the case of $\mathrm{SU}(2)_k$ and show that the standard $\mathrm{SU}(2)$ volume operator is recovered in the limit $k\rightarrow\infty$.

Scale limited fields and the Casimir effect

We revisit the calculation of the Casimir effect from the perspective of scale limited resolutions of quantum fields. We use the continuous wavelet transform to introduce a scale degree of freedom and then restrict it to simulate either an observational or fundamental limitation of resolution. The Casimir force is derived in this setting for a free complex massless scalar field between two infinite plates with both Dirichlet and periodic boundary conditions. The dependence of the force on the choice of wavelet and size of scale cutoff is extensively discussed for several examples of wavelets.

Imaging stars with quantum error correction

The development of high-resolution, large-baseline optical interferometers would revolutionize astronomical imaging. However, classical techniques are hindered by physical limitations including loss, noise, and the fact that the received light is generally quantum in nature. We show how to overcome these issues using quantum communication techniques. We present a general framework for using quantum error correction codes for protecting and imaging starlight received at distant telescope sites. In our scheme, the quantum state of light is coherently captured into a non-radiative atomic state via Stimulated Raman Adiabatic Passage, which is then imprinted into a quantum error correction code. The code protects the signal during subsequent potentially noisy operations necessary to extract the image parameters. We show that even a small quantum error correction code can offer significant protection against noise. For large codes, we find noise thresholds below which the information can be preserved. Our scheme represents an application for near-term quantum devices that can increase imaging resolution beyond what is feasible using classical techniques.

Information Flow in Non-Unitary Quantum Cellular Automata

The information flow in a quantum system is a fundamental feature of its dynamics. An important class of dynamics are quantum cellular automata (QCA), systems with discrete updates invariant in time and space, for which an index theory has been proposed for the quantification of the net flow of quantum information across a boundary. While the index is rigid in the sense of begin invariant under finite-depth local circuits, it is not defined when the system is coupled to an environment, i.e. for non-unitary time evolution of open quantum systems. We propose a new measure of information flow for non-unitary QCA denoted the information current which is not rigid, but can be computed locally based on the matrix-product operator representation of the map.

Entanglement in quantum field theory via wavelet representations

Quantum field theory (QFT) describes nature using continuous fields, but physical properties of QFT are usually revealed in terms of measurements of observables at a finite resolution. We describe a multiscale representation of a free scalar bosonic and Ising model fermionic QFTs using wavelets. Making use of the orthogonality and self similarity of the wavelet basis functions, we demonstrate some well known relations such as scale dependent subsystem entanglement entropy and renormalization of correlations in the ground state. We also find some new applications of the wavelet transform as a compressed representation of ground states of QFTs which can be used to illustrate quantum phase transitions via fidelity overlap and holographic entanglement of purification.

Nearly optimal quantum algorithm for generating the ground state of a free quantum field theory

We devise a quasilinear quantum algorithm for generating an approximation for the ground state of a quantum field theory (QFT). Our quantum algorithm delivers a super-quadratic speedup over the state-of-the-art quantum algorithm for ground-state generation, overcomes the ground-state-generation bottleneck of the prior approach and is optimal up to a polylogarithmic factor. Specifically, we establish two quantum algorithms -- Fourier-based and wavelet-based -- to generate the ground state of a free massive scalar bosonic QFT with gate complexity quasilinear in the number of discretized-QFT modes. The Fourier-based algorithm is limited to translationally invariant QFTs. Numerical simulations show that the wavelet-based algorithm successfully yields the ground state for a QFT with broken translational invariance. Furthermore, the cost of preparing particle excitations in the wavelet approach is independent of the energy scale. Our algorithms require a routine for generating one-dimensional Gaussian (1DG) states. We replace the standard method for 1DG-state generation, which requires the quantum computer to perform lots of costly arithmetic, with a novel method based on inequality testing that significantly reduces the need for arithmetic. Our method for 1DG-state generation is generic and could be extended to preparing states whose amplitudes can be computed on the fly by a quantum computer.

Modified coherence of quantum spins in a damped pure-dephasing model

We consider a spin-$j$ particle coupled to a structured bath of bosonic modes that decay into thermal baths. We obtain an analytic expression for the reduced spin state and use it to investigate non-Markovian spin dynamics. In the heavily overdamped regime, spin coherences are preserved due to a quantum Zeno affect. We extend the solution to two spins and include coupling between the modes, which can be leveraged for preservation of the symmetric spin subspace. For many spins, we find that inter-mode coupling gives rise to a privileged symmetric mode gapped from the other modes. This provides a handle to selectively address that privileged mode for quantum control of the collective spin. Finally, we show that our solution applies to defects in solid-state systems, such as NV$^{-}$ centres in diamond.

Directed percolation in non-unitary quantum cellular automata

Probabilistic cellular automata (CA) provides a classic framework for studying non-equilibrium statistical physics on a lattices. A notable example is the Domany-Kinzel CA, which has been used to investigate the process of directed percolation and the critical dynamics of the non-equilibrium phase transition betweeen absorbing and percolating phases. In this work, we construct a non-unitary Quantum Cellular Automaton that generalises the Domany-Kinzel cellular automaton and study the resulting dynamical evolution using the numerical simulations using the tensor network iTEBD algorithm. We demonstrate the system undergoes the absorbing/percolating phase transition and the addition of the Hamiltonian generates coherences, which are a distinct feature of the quantum dynamics. A proposal for the implementation of the model with Rydberg array is put forward, which does not require local addressing of individual sites.

Quantum crypto-economics: Blockchain prediction markets for the evolution of quantum technology

Two of the most important technological advancements currently underway are the advent of quantum technologies, and the transitioning of global financial systems towards cryptographic assets, notably blockchain-based cryptocurrencies and smart contracts. There is, however, an important interplay between the two, given that, in due course, quantum technology will have the ability to directly compromise the cryptographic foundations of blockchain. We explore this complex interplay by building financial models for quantum failure in various scenarios, including pricing quantum risk premiums. We call this quantum crypto-economics.

Decoding Holographic Codes with an Integer Optimisation Decoder

We develop a most likely error Pauli error decoding algorithm for stabiliser codes based on general purpose integer optimisation. Using this decoder we analyse the performance of holographic codes against Pauli errors and find numerical evidence for thresholds against Pauli errors for bulk qubits. We compare the performance of holographic code families of various code rates and find phenomenological Pauli error thresholds ranging from $7\%$ to $16\%$, depending on the code rate. Additionally we give numerical evidence that specific distance measures of the codes we consider scales polynomially with number of physical qubits.

Geometric pathway to scalable quantum sensing

Entangled resources enable quantum sensing that achieves Heisenberg scaling, a quadratic improvement on the standard quantum limit, but preparing large scale entangled states is challenging in the presence of decoherence. We present a quantum control strategy using highly nonlinear geometric phase gates for preparing entangled states on spin ensembles which can be used for practical precision metrology. The method uses a dispersive coupling of $N$ spins to a common bosonic mode and does not require addressability, special detunings, or interactions between the spins. Using a control sequence that executes Grover's algorithm on a subspace of permutationally symmetric states, a target entangled resource state can be prepared using $O(N^{5/4})$ geometric phase gates. The geometrically closed path of the control operations ensures the gates are insensitive to the initial state of the mode and the sequence has built-in dynamical decoupling providing resilience to dephasing errors.

Ensemble-induced strong light-matter coupling of a single quantum emitter

We discuss a technique to strongly couple a single target quantum emitter to a cavity mode, which is enabled by virtual excitations of a nearby mesoscopic ensemble of emitters. A collective coupling of the latter to both the cavity and the target emitter induces strong photon non-linearities in addition to polariton formation, in contrast to common schemes for ensemble strong coupling. We demonstrate that strong coupling at the level of a single emitter can be engineered via coherent and dissipative dipolar interactions with the ensemble, and provide realistic parameters for a possible implementation with SiV$^{-}$ defects in diamond. Our scheme can find applications, amongst others, in quantum information processing or in the field of cavity-assisted quantum chemistry.

MERA as a holographic strange correlator

The multi-scale entanglement renormalization ansatz (MERA) is a tensor network that can efficiently parameterize critical ground states on a 1D lattice, and also suggestively implement some aspects of the holographic correspondence of string theory on a lattice. Extending our recent work [S. Singh, Physical Review D 97, 026012 (2018); S. Singh, N. A. McMahon, and G. K. Brennen, Phys. Rev. D 97, 026013 (2018)], we show how the MERA representation of a 1D critical ground state---which has long range entanglement---can be viewed as a strange correlator: the overlap of a 2D state with short range entanglement and a 2D product state. Strange correlators were recently introduced to map 2D symmetry protected or topologically ordered quantum states to critical systems in one lower dimension. The 2D quantum state dual to the input 1D critical state is obtained by lifting the MERA, a procedure which introduces bulk quantum degrees of freedom by inserting intertwiner tensors on each bond of the MERA tensor network. We show how this dual 2D bulk state exhibits several features of holography, for example, appearance of horizon-like holographic screens and bulk gauging of global on-site symmetries at the boundary. We also derive a quantum corrected Ryu-Takayanagi formula relating boundary entanglement entropy to bulk geodesic lengths---as measured by bulk entropy---and numerically test it for ground states of a set of unitary minimal model CFTs, as realized by 1D anyonic Heisenberg models.

Calderbank-Steane-Shor Holographic Quantum Error Correcting Codes

We expand the class of holographic quantum error correcting codes by developing the notion of block perfect tensors, a wider class that includes previously defined perfect tensors. The relaxation of this constraint opens up a range of other holographic codes. We demonstrate this by introducing the self-dual CSS heptagon holographic code, based on the 7-qubit Steane code. Finally we show promising thresholds for the erasure channel by applying a straightforward, optimal erasure decoder to the heptagon code and benchmark it against existing holographic codes.

Anonymous broadcasting of classical information with a continuous-variable topological quantum code

Broadcasting information anonymously becomes more difficult as surveillance technology improves, but remarkably, quantum protocols exist that enable provably traceless broadcasting. The difficulty is making scalable entangled resource states that are robust to errors. We propose an anonymous broadcasting protocol that uses a continuous-variable surface-code state that can be produced using current technology. High squeezing enables large transmission bandwidth and strong anonymity, and the topological nature of the state enables local error mitigation.
