Effective divisors on \bar{M}_g, curves on K3 surfaces and the Slope Conjecture

We carry out a detailed intersection theoretic analysis of the Deligne-Mumford compactification of the divisor on M_{10} consisting of curves sitting on K3 surfaces. This divisor is not of classical Brill-Noether type, and is known to give a counterexample to the Slope Conjecture. The computation relies on the fact that this divisor has four different incarnations as a geometric subvariety of the moduli space of curves, one of them as a higher rank Brill-Noether divisor consisting of curves with an exceptional rank 2 vector bundle. As an application we describe the birational nature of the moduli space of n-pointed curves of genus 10, for all n. We also show that on M_{11} there are effective divisors of minimal slope and having large Iitaka dimension. This seems to contradict the belief that on M_g the classical Brill-Noether divisors are essentially the only ones of slope 6+12/(g+1).

Gaussian maps, Gieseker-Petri loci and large theta-characteristics

We analyze the stratification of the moduli space S_g of spin curves of genus g given by the dimension of the theta-characteristic. Using the relation between gaussian maps and the strata S_g^r, we construct "regular" components of S_g^r having expected codimension r(r+1)/2 inside S_g. We also relate moduli spaces of pointed curves with a moving spin structure to the classical Gieseker-Petri loci in M_g. We show that the locus of curves for which the Gieseker-Petri theorem fails for a pencil is always a divisor on M_g. Finally, we give a sufficient criterion for the injectivity of Gaussian maps of arbitrary line bundles on general curves of genus g.

Divisors on $\mathcal{M}_{g,g+1}$ and the Minimal Resolution Conjecture for points on canonical curves

We formulate a conjecture on the behavior of the minimal free resolutions of sets of general points on arbitrary varieties embedded by complete linear series, in analogy with the well-known Minimal Resolution Conjecture for points in projective space. We then study in detail the case of curves. Our main result is that the Minimal Resolution Conjecture holds for general points on any canonical curve. On the other hand, for curves embedded with large degree, it always fails at a well-specified spot in the Betti diagram. The results are shown via techniques involving theta divisors associated to semistable vector bundles, difference varieties in Jacobians, and divisor class calculations in moduli spaces of curves with marked points.

Effective divisors on $M_g$ and a counterexample to the Slope Conjecture

We prove two statements on the slopes of effective divisors on the moduli space of stable curves of genus g: first that the Harris-Morrison Slope Conjecture fails for g=10 and second, that in order to compute the slope of the moduli space of curves for g\leq 23, one only has to consider the coefficients of the Hodge class and that of the boundary divisor δ_0 in the expansion of the relevant divisors. We conjecture that the same statement holds in arbitrary genus.

Regular components of moduli spaces of stable maps

A component of the moduli space M_g(Y,b) of stable maps from genus g curves to a variety Y is said to be regular if it is generically smooth and of the expected dimension provided by deformation theory. In this note we prove existence of regular components of M_g(Y,b) when Y is a product of projective spaces. This result can also be seen as a general position theorem for Brill-Noether loci in M_g.

The Mori cones of moduli spaces of pointed curves of small genus

We compute the Mori cone of curves of the moduli space \M_{g,n} of stable n-pointed curves of genus g in the case when g and n are relatively small. For instance, we show that for g<14 every curve in \M_g is numerically equivalent to an effective sum of 1-strata (loci of curves with 3g-4 nodes). We also prove that the nef cone of \M_{0,6} is composed of 11 natural subcones all contained in the convex hull of boundary classes. We apply this result to classify the fibrations of the moduli space of rational curves with n<7 marked points.

Brill-Noether Loci and the Gonality Stratification of $M_g$

A Brill-Noether locus is a subvariety of M_g consisting of curves having certain linear series g^r_d. We study the relative position of Brill-Noether loci with respect to the gonality stratification of M_g. We construct smooth curves in P^r of given degree and genus and having the `expected' gonality. As an application we give a new proof of our result about the Kodaira dimension of the moduli space of curves of genus 23.

The Geometry of the Moduli Space of Curves of Genus 23

We prove that the Kodaira dimension of the moduli space M_{23} of curves of genus 23 is at least 2. We also present some evidence for the hypothesis that the Kodaira dimension of the moduli space is actually equal to 2. Note that for g > 23 the moduli space is of general type, while for g\leq 22, Harris and Morrison conjectured that M_g is uniruled. The result on M_{23} is obtained by investigating the relative position of three explicit multicanonical divisors which are of Brill-Noether type.
