Combining Attention with Flow for Person Image Synthesis

Pose-guided person image synthesis aims to synthesize person images by transforming reference images into target poses. In this paper, we observe that the commonly used spatial transformation blocks have complementary advantages. We propose a novel model by combining the attention operation with the flow-based operation. Our model not only takes the advantage of the attention operation to generate accurate target structures but also uses the flow-based operation to sample realistic source textures. Both objective and subjective experiments demonstrate the superiority of our model. Meanwhile, comprehensive ablation studies verify our hypotheses and show the efficacy of the proposed modules. Besides, additional experiments on the portrait image editing task demonstrate the versatility of the proposed combination.

Semantic-guided Pixel Sampling for Cloth-Changing Person Re-identification

Cloth-changing person re-identification (re-ID) is a new rising research topic that aims at retrieving pedestrians whose clothes are changed. This task is quite challenging and has not been fully studied to date. Current works mainly focus on body shape or contour sketch, but they are not robust enough due to view and posture variations. The key to this task is to exploit cloth-irrelevant cues. This paper proposes a semantic-guided pixel sampling approach for the cloth-changing person re-ID task. We do not explicitly define which feature to extract but force the model to automatically learn cloth-irrelevant cues. Specifically, we first recognize the pedestrian's upper clothes and pants, then randomly change them by sampling pixels from other pedestrians. The changed samples retain the identity labels but exchange the pixels of clothes or pants among different pedestrians. Besides, we adopt a loss function to constrain the learned features to keep consistent before and after changes. In this way, the model is forced to learn cues that are irrelevant to upper clothes and pants. We conduct extensive experiments on the latest released PRCC dataset. Our method achieved 65.8% on Rank1 accuracy, which outperforms previous methods with a large margin. The code is available at https://github.com/shuxjweb/pixel_sampling.git.

Low Pass Filter for Anti-aliasing in Temporal Action Localization

In temporal action localization methods, temporal downsampling operations are widely used to extract proposal features, but they often lead to the aliasing problem, due to lacking consideration of sampling rates. This paper aims to verify the existence of aliasing in TAL methods and investigate utilizing low pass filters to solve this problem by inhibiting the high-frequency band. However, the high-frequency band usually contains large amounts of specific information, which is important for model inference. Therefore, it is necessary to make a tradeoff between anti-aliasing and reserving high-frequency information. To acquire optimal performance, this paper learns different cutoff frequencies for different instances dynamically. This design can be plugged into most existing temporal modeling programs requiring only one additional cutoff frequency parameter. Integrating low pass filters to the downsampling operations significantly improves the detection performance and achieves comparable results on THUMOS'14, ActivityNet~1.3, and Charades datasets. Experiments demonstrate that anti-aliasing with low pass filters in TAL is advantageous and efficient.

Modular Tree Network for Source Code Representation Learning

Learning representation for source code is a foundation of many program analysis tasks. In recent years, neural networks have already shown success in this area, but most existing models did not make full use of the unique structural information of programs. Although abstract syntax tree-based neural models can handle the tree structure in the source code, they cannot capture the richness of different types of substructure in programs. In this paper, we propose a modular tree network (MTN) which dynamically composes different neural network units into tree structures based on the input abstract syntax tree. Different from previous tree-structural neural network models, MTN can capture the semantic differences between types of ASTsubstructures. We evaluate our model on two tasks: program classification and code clone detection. Ourmodel achieves the best performance compared with state-of-the-art approaches in both tasks, showing the advantage of leveraging more elaborate structure information of the source code.

Multi-task Learning based Pre-trained Language Model for Code Completion

Code completion is one of the most useful features in the Integrated Development Environments (IDEs), which can accelerate software development by suggesting the next probable token based on the contextual code in real-time. Recent studies have shown that statistical language modeling techniques can improve the performance of code completion tools through learning from large-scale software repositories. However, these models suffer from two major drawbacks: a) Existing research uses static embeddings, which map a word to the same vector regardless of its context. The differences in the meaning of a token in varying contexts are lost when each token is associated with a single representation; b) Existing language model based code completion models perform poor on completing identifiers, and the type information of the identifiers is ignored in most of these models. To address these challenges, in this paper, we develop a multi-task learning based pre-trained language model for code understanding and code generation with a Transformer-based neural architecture. We pre-train it with hybrid objective functions that incorporate both code understanding and code generation tasks. Then we fine-tune the pre-trained model on code completion. During the completion, our model does not directly predict the next token. Instead, we adopt multi-task learning to predict the token and its type jointly and utilize the predicted type to assist the token prediction. Experiments results on two real-world datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of our model when compared with state-of-the-art methods.

SSD-GAN: Measuring the Realness in the Spatial and Spectral Domains

This paper observes that there is an issue of high frequencies missing in the discriminator of standard GAN, and we reveal it stems from downsampling layers employed in the network architecture. This issue makes the generator lack the incentive from the discriminator to learn high-frequency content of data, resulting in a significant spectrum discrepancy between generated images and real images. Since the Fourier transform is a bijective mapping, we argue that reducing this spectrum discrepancy would boost the performance of GANs. To this end, we introduce SSD-GAN, an enhancement of GANs to alleviate the spectral information loss in the discriminator. Specifically, we propose to embed a frequency-aware classifier into the discriminator to measure the realness of the input in both the spatial and spectral domains. With the enhanced discriminator, the generator of SSD-GAN is encouraged to learn high-frequency content of real data and generate exact details. The proposed method is general and can be easily integrated into most existing GANs framework without excessive cost. The effectiveness of SSD-GAN is validated on various network architectures, objective functions, and datasets. Code will be available at https://github.com/cyq373/SSD-GAN.

NLocalSAT: Boosting Local Search with Solution Prediction

The Boolean satisfiability problem (SAT) is a famous NP-complete problem in computer science. An effective way for solving a satisfiable SAT problem is the stochastic local search (SLS). However, in this method, the initialization is assigned in a random manner, which impacts the effectiveness of SLS solvers. To address this problem, we propose NLocalSAT. NLocalSAT combines SLS with a solution prediction model, which boosts SLS by changing initialization assignments with a neural network. We evaluated NLocalSAT on five SLS solvers (CCAnr, Sparrow, CPSparrow, YalSAT, and probSAT) with instances in the random track of SAT Competition 2018. The experimental results show that solvers with NLocalSAT achieve 27% ~ 62% improvement over the original SLS solvers.

Point Cloud Attribute Compression via Successive Subspace Graph Transform

Inspired by the recently proposed successive subspace learning (SSL) principles, we develop a successive subspace graph transform (SSGT) to address point cloud attribute compression in this work. The octree geometry structure is utilized to partition the point cloud, where every node of the octree represents a point cloud subspace with a certain spatial size. We design a weighted graph with self-loop to describe the subspace and define a graph Fourier transform based on the normalized graph Laplacian. The transforms are applied to large point clouds from the leaf nodes to the root node of the octree recursively, while the represented subspace is expanded from the smallest one to the whole point cloud successively. It is shown by experimental results that the proposed SSGT method offers better R-D performances than the previous Region Adaptive Haar Transform (RAHT) method.

Retrieve and Refine: Exemplar-based Neural Comment Generation

Code comment generation which aims to automatically generate natural language descriptions for source code, is a crucial task in the field of automatic software development. Traditional comment generation methods use manually-crafted templates or information retrieval (IR) techniques to generate summaries for source code. In recent years, neural network-based methods which leveraged acclaimed encoder-decoder deep learning framework to learn comment generation patterns from a large-scale parallel code corpus, have achieved impressive results. However, these emerging methods only take code-related information as input. Software reuse is common in the process of software development, meaning that comments of similar code snippets are helpful for comment generation. Inspired by the IR-based and template-based approaches, in this paper, we propose a neural comment generation approach where we use the existing comments of similar code snippets as exemplars to guide comment generation. Specifically, given a piece of code, we first use an IR technique to retrieve a similar code snippet and treat its comment as an exemplar. Then we design a novel seq2seq neural network that takes the given code, its AST, its similar code, and its exemplar as input, and leverages the information from the exemplar to assist in the target comment generation based on the semantic similarity between the source code and the similar code. We evaluate our approach on a large-scale Java corpus, which contains about 2M samples, and experimental results demonstrate that our model outperforms the state-of-the-art methods by a substantial margin.

Towards Full-line Code Completion with Neural Language Models

A code completion system suggests future code elements to developers given a partially-complete code snippet. Code completion is one of the most useful features in Integrated Development Environments (IDEs). Currently, most code completion techniques predict a single token at a time. In this paper, we take a further step and discuss the probability of directly completing a whole line of code instead of a single token. We believe suggesting longer code sequences can further improve the efficiency of developers. Recently neural language models have been adopted as a preferred approach for code completion, and we believe these models can still be applied to full-line code completion with a few improvements. We conduct our experiments on two real-world python corpora and evaluate existing neural models based on source code tokens or syntactical actions. The results show that neural language models can achieve acceptable results on our tasks, with significant room for improvements.

Deep Spatial Transformation for Pose-Guided Person Image Generation and Animation

Pose-guided person image generation and animation aim to transform a source person image to target poses. These tasks require spatial manipulation of source data. However, Convolutional Neural Networks are limited by the lack of ability to spatially transform the inputs. In this paper, we propose a differentiable global-flow local-attention framework to reassemble the inputs at the feature level. This framework first estimates global flow fields between sources and targets. Then, corresponding local source feature patches are sampled with content-aware local attention coefficients. We show that our framework can spatially transform the inputs in an efficient manner. Meanwhile, we further model the temporal consistency for the person image animation task to generate coherent videos. The experiment results of both image generation and animation tasks demonstrate the superiority of our model. Besides, additional results of novel view synthesis and face image animation show that our model is applicable to other tasks requiring spatial transformation. Toward Zero-Shot Unsupervised Image-to-Image Translation

Recent studies have shown remarkable success in unsupervised image-to-image translation. However, if there has no access to enough images in target classes, learning a mapping from source classes to the target classes always suffers from mode collapse, which limits the application of the existing methods. In this work, we propose a zero-shot unsupervised image-to-image translation framework to address this limitation, by associating categories with their side information like attributes. To generalize the translator to previous unseen classes, we introduce two strategies for exploiting the space spanned by the semantic attributes. Specifically, we propose to preserve semantic relations to the visual space and expand attribute space by utilizing attribute vectors of unseen classes, thus encourage the translator to explore the modes of unseen classes. Quantitative and qualitative results on different datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed approach. Moreover, we demonstrate that our framework can be applied to many tasks, such as zero-shot classification and fashion design.

A Self-Attentional Neural Architecture for Code Completion with Multi-Task Learning

Code completion, one of the most useful features in the Integrated Development Environments (IDEs), can accelerate software development by suggesting the libraries, APIs, and method names in real-time. Recent studies have shown that statistical language models can improve the performance of code completion tools through learning from large-scale software repositories. However, these models suffer from three major drawbacks: a) The hierarchical structural information of the programs is not fully utilized in the program's representation; b) In programs, the semantic relationships can be very long. Existing recurrent neural networks based language models are not sufficient to model the long-term dependency. c) Existing approaches perform a specific task in one model, which leads to the underuse of the information from related tasks. To address these challenges, in this paper, we propose a self-attentional neural architecture for code completion with multi-task learning. To utilize the hierarchical structural information of the programs, we present a novel method that considers the path from the predicting node to the root node. To capture the long-term dependency in the input programs, we adopt a self-attentional architecture based network as the base language model. To enable the knowledge sharing between related tasks, we creatively propose a Multi-Task Learning (MTL) framework to learn two related tasks in code completion jointly. Experiments on three real-world datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of our model when compared with state-of-the-art methods.

A Mid-infrared Flare in the Active Galaxy MCG-02-04-026: Dust Echo of a Nuclear Transient Event

We report the discovery of a mid-infrared (MIR) flare using WISE data in the center of the nearby Seyfert 1.9 galaxy MCG-02-04-026. The MIR flare began in the first half of 2014, peaked around the end of 2015, and faded in 2017. During these years, energy more than $7\times10^{50}$ erg was released in the infrared, and the flare's MIR color was generally turning red. We detected neither optical nor ultraviolet (UV) variation corresponding to the MIR flare based on available data. We explained the MIR flare using a dust echo model in which the radiative transfer is involved. The MIR flare can be well explained as thermal reradiation from dust heated by UV-optical photons of a primary nuclear transient event. Although the transient event was not seen directly due to dust obscuration, we can infer that it may produce a total energy of at least $\sim10^{51}$ erg, most of which was released in less than $\sim$3 years. The nature of the transient event could be a stellar tidal disruption event by the central supermassive black hole (SMBH), or a sudden enhancement of the existing accretion flow onto the SMBH, or a supernova which was particularly bright.

Multi-Mapping Image-to-Image Translation with Central Biasing Normalization

Recent advances in image-to-image translation have seen a rise in approaches generating diverse images through a single network. To indicate the target domain for a one-to-many mapping, the latent code is injected into the generator network. However, we found that the injection method leads to mode collapse because of normalization strategies. Existing normalization strategies might either cause the inconsistency of feature distribution or eliminate the effect of the latent code. To solve these problems, we propose the consistency within diversity criteria for designing the multi-mapping model. Based on the criteria, we propose central biasing normalization to inject the latent code information. Experiments show that our method can improve the quality and diversity of existing image-to-image translation models, such as StarGAN, BicycleGAN, and pix2pix.

SingleGAN: Image-to-Image Translation by a Single-Generator Network using Multiple Generative Adversarial Learning

Image translation is a burgeoning field in computer vision where the goal is to learn the mapping between an input image and an output image. However, most recent methods require multiple generators for modeling different domain mappings, which are inefficient and ineffective on some multi-domain image translation tasks. In this paper, we propose a novel method, SingleGAN, to perform multi-domain image-to-image translations with a single generator. We introduce the domain code to explicitly control the different generative tasks and integrate multiple optimization goals to ensure the translation. Experimental results on several unpaired datasets show superior performance of our model in translation between two domains. Besides, we explore variants of SingleGAN for different tasks, including one-to-many domain translation, many-to-many domain translation and one-to-one domain translation with multimodality. The extended experiments show the universality and extensibility of our model.
