Step-by-step Erasion, One-by-one Collection: A Weakly Supervised Temporal Action Detector

Weakly supervised temporal action detection is a Herculean task in understanding untrimmed videos, since no supervisory signal except the video-level category label is available on training data. Under the supervision of category labels, weakly supervised detectors are usually built upon classifiers. However, there is an inherent contradiction between classifier and detector; i.e., a classifier in pursuit of high classification performance prefers top-level discriminative video clips that are extremely fragmentary, whereas a detector is obliged to discover the whole action instance without missing any relevant snippet. To reconcile this contradiction, we train a detector by driving a series of classifiers to find new actionness clips progressively, via step-by-step erasion from a complete video. During the test phase, all we need to do is to collect detection results from the one-by-one trained classifiers at various erasing steps. To assist in the collection process, a fully connected conditional random field is established to refine the temporal localization outputs. We evaluate our approach on two prevailing datasets, THUMOS'14 and ActivityNet. The experiments show that our detector advances state-of-the-art weakly supervised temporal action detection results, and even compares with quite a few strongly supervised methods.

Exploiting the Value of the Center-dark Channel Prior for Salient Object Detection

Saliency detection aims to detect the most attractive objects in images and is widely used as a foundation for various applications. In this paper, we propose a novel salient object detection algorithm for RGB-D images using center-dark channel priors. First, we generate an initial saliency map based on a color saliency map and a depth saliency map of a given RGB-D image. Then, we generate a center-dark channel map based on center saliency and dark channel priors. Finally, we fuse the initial saliency map with the center dark channel map to generate the final saliency map. Extensive evaluations over four benchmark datasets demonstrate that our proposed method performs favorably against most of the state-of-the-art approaches. Besides, we further discuss the application of the proposed algorithm in small target detection and demonstrate the universal value of center-dark channel priors in the field of object detection.

Deep Learning in Software Engineering

Recent years, deep learning is increasingly prevalent in the field of Software Engineering (SE). However, many open issues still remain to be investigated. How do researchers integrate deep learning into SE problems? Which SE phases are facilitated by deep learning? Do practitioners benefit from deep learning? The answers help practitioners and researchers develop practical deep learning models for SE tasks. To answer these questions, we conduct a bibliography analysis on 98 research papers in SE that use deep learning techniques. We find that 41 SE tasks in all SE phases have been facilitated by deep learning integrated solutions. In which, 84.7% papers only use standard deep learning models and their variants to solve SE problems. The practicability becomes a concern in utilizing deep learning techniques. How to improve the effectiveness, efficiency, understandability, and testability of deep learning based solutions may attract more SE researchers in the future.

Hybrid Point Cloud Attribute Compression Using Slice-based Layered Structure and Block-based Intra Prediction

Point cloud compression is a key enabler for the emerging applications of immersive visual communication, autonomous driving and smart cities, etc. In this paper, we propose a hybrid point cloud attribute compression scheme built on an original layered data structure. First, a slice-partition scheme and geometry-adaptive k dimensional-tree (kd-tree) method are devised to generate the four-layer structure. Second, we introduce an efficient block-based intra prediction scheme containing a DC prediction mode and several angular modes, in order to exploit the spatial correlation between adjacent points. Third, an adaptive transform scheme based on Graph Fourier Transform (GFT) is Lagrangian optimized to achieve better transform efficiency. The Lagrange multiplier is off-line derived based on the statistics of color attribute coding. Last but not least, multiple reordering scan modes are dedicated to improve coding efficiency for entropy coding. In intra-frame compression of point cloud color attributes, results demonstrate that our method performs better than the state-of-the-art region-adaptive hierarchical transform (RAHT) system, and on average a 29.37$\%$ BD-rate gain is achieved. Comparing with the test model for category 1 (TMC1) anchor's coding results, which were recently published by MPEG-3DG group on 121st meeting, a 16.37$\%$ BD-rate gain is obtained.

Automatic Salient Object Detection for Panoramic Images Using Region Growing and Fixation Prediction Model

Almost all previous works on saliency detection have been dedicated to conventional images, however, with the outbreak of panoramic images due to the rapid development of VR or AR technology, it is becoming more challenging, meanwhile valuable for extracting salient contents in panoramic images. In this paper, we propose a novel bottom-up salient object detection framework for panoramic images. First, we employ a spatial density estimation method to roughly extract object proposal regions, with the help of region growing algorithm. Meanwhile, an eye fixation model is utilized to predict visually attractive parts in the image from the perspective of the human visual search mechanism. Then, the previous results are combined by the maxima normalization to get the coarse saliency map. Finally, a refinement step based on geodesic distance is utilized for post-processing to derive the final saliency map. To fairly evaluate the performance of the proposed approach, we propose a high-quality dataset of panoramic images (SalPan). Extensive evaluations demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed method on panoramic images and the superiority of the proposed method against other methods.

A multilayer backpropagation saliency detection algorithm and its applications

Saliency detection is an active topic in the multimedia field. Most previous works on saliency detection focus on 2D images. However, these methods are not robust against complex scenes which contain multiple objects or complex backgrounds. Recently, depth information supplies a powerful cue for saliency detection. In this paper, we propose a multilayer backpropagation saliency detection algorithm based on depth mining by which we exploit depth cue from three different layers of images. The proposed algorithm shows a good performance and maintains the robustness in complex situations. Experiments' results show that the proposed framework is superior to other existing saliency approaches. Besides, we give two innovative applications by this algorithm, such as scene reconstruction from multiple images and small target object detection in video.

CodeSum: Translate Program Language to Natural Language

During software maintenance, programmers spend a lot of time on code comprehension. Reading comments is an effective way for programmers to reduce the reading and navigating time when comprehending source code. Therefore, as a critical task in software engineering, code summarization aims to generate brief natural language descriptions for source code. In this paper, we propose a new code summarization model named CodeSum. CodeSum exploits the attention-based sequence-to-sequence (Seq2Seq) neural network with Structure-based Traversal (SBT) of Abstract Syntax Trees (AST). The AST sequences generated by SBT can better present the structure of ASTs and keep unambiguous. We conduct experiments on three large-scale corpora in different program languages, i.e., Java, C#, and SQL, in which Java corpus is our new proposed industry code extracted from Github. Experimental results show that our method CodeSum outperforms the state-of-the-art significantly.

Why Do Neural Dialog Systems Generate Short and Meaningless Replies? A Comparison between Dialog and Translation

This paper addresses the question: Why do neural dialog systems generate short and meaningless replies? We conjecture that, in a dialog system, an utterance may have multiple equally plausible replies, causing the deficiency of neural networks in the dialog application. We propose a systematic way to mimic the dialog scenario in a machine translation system, and manage to reproduce the phenomenon of generating short and less meaningful sentences in the translation setting, showing evidence of our conjecture.

A Bio-Inspired Multi-Exposure Fusion Framework for Low-light Image Enhancement

Low-light images are not conducive to human observation and computer vision algorithms due to their low visibility. Although many image enhancement techniques have been proposed to solve this problem, existing methods inevitably introduce contrast under- and over-enhancement. Inspired by human visual system, we design a multi-exposure fusion framework for low-light image enhancement. Based on the framework, we propose a dual-exposure fusion algorithm to provide an accurate contrast and lightness enhancement. Specifically, we first design the weight matrix for image fusion using illumination estimation techniques. Then we introduce our camera response model to synthesize multi-exposure images. Next, we find the best exposure ratio so that the synthetic image is well-exposed in the regions where the original image is under-exposed. Finally, the enhanced result is obtained by fusing the input image and the synthetic image according to the weight matrix. Experiments show that our method can obtain results with less contrast and lightness distortion compared to that of several state-of-the-art methods.

Robust Saliency Detection via Fusing Foreground and Background Priors

Automatic Salient object detection has received tremendous attention from research community and has been an increasingly important tool in many computer vision tasks. This paper proposes a novel bottom-up salient object detection framework which considers both foreground and background cues. First, A series of background and foreground seeds are selected from an image reliably, and then used for calculation of saliency map separately. Next, a combination of foreground and background saliency map is performed. Last, a refinement step based on geodesic distance is utilized to enhance salient regions, thus deriving the final saliency map. Particularly we provide a robust scheme for seeds selection which contributes a lot to accuracy improvement in saliency detection. Extensive experimental evaluations demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed method against other outstanding methods.

Attribute Compression of 3D Point Clouds Using Laplacian Sparsity Optimized Graph Transform

3D sensing and content capture have made significant progress in recent years and the MPEG standardization organization is launching a new project on immersive media with point cloud compression (PCC) as one key corner stone. In this work, we introduce a new binary tree based point cloud content partition and explore the graph signal processing tools, especially the graph transform with optimized Laplacian sparsity, to achieve better energy compaction and compression efficiency. The resulting rate-distortion operating points are convex-hull optimized over the existing Lagrangian solutions. Simulation results with the latest high quality point cloud content captured from the MPEG PCC demonstrated the transform efficiency and rate-distortion (R-D) optimal potential of the proposed solutions.

ORGB: Offset Correction in RGB Color Space for Illumination-Robust Image Processing

Single materials have colors which form straight lines in RGB space. However, in severe shadow cases, those lines do not intersect the origin, which is inconsistent with the description of most literature. This paper is concerned with the detection and correction of the offset between the intersection and origin. First, we analyze the reason for forming that offset via an optical imaging model. Second, we present a simple and effective way to detect and remove the offset. The resulting images, named ORGB, have almost the same appearance as the original RGB images while are more illumination-robust for color space conversion. Besides, image processing using ORGB instead of RGB is free from the interference of shadows. Finally, the proposed offset correction method is applied to road detection task, improving the performance both in quantitative and qualitative evaluations.

A Self-Adaptive Proposal Model for Temporal Action Detection based on Reinforcement Learning

Existing action detection algorithms usually generate action proposals through an extensive search over the video at multiple temporal scales, which brings about huge computational overhead and deviates from the human perception procedure. We argue that the process of detecting actions should be naturally one of observation and refinement: observe the current window and refine the span of attended window to cover true action regions. In this paper, we propose an active action proposal model that learns to find actions through continuously adjusting the temporal bounds in a self-adaptive way. The whole process can be deemed as an agent, which is firstly placed at a position in the video at random, adopts a sequence of transformations on the current attended region to discover actions according to a learned policy. We utilize reinforcement learning, especially the Deep Q-learning algorithm to learn the agent's decision policy. In addition, we use temporal pooling operation to extract more effective feature representation for the long temporal window, and design a regression network to adjust the position offsets between predicted results and the ground truth. Experiment results on THUMOS 2014 validate the effectiveness of the proposed approach, which can achieve competitive performance with current action detection algorithms via much fewer proposals.

Improved Relation Classification by Deep Recurrent Neural Networks with Data Augmentation

Nowadays, neural networks play an important role in the task of relation classification. By designing different neural architectures, researchers have improved the performance to a large extent in comparison with traditional methods. However, existing neural networks for relation classification are usually of shallow architectures (e.g., one-layer convolutional neural networks or recurrent networks). They may fail to explore the potential representation space in different abstraction levels. In this paper, we propose deep recurrent neural networks (DRNNs) for relation classification to tackle this challenge. Further, we propose a data augmentation method by leveraging the directionality of relations. We evaluated our DRNNs on the SemEval-2010 Task~8, and achieve an F1-score of 86.1%, outperforming previous state-of-the-art recorded results.

How Transferable are Neural Networks in NLP Applications?

Transfer learning is aimed to make use of valuable knowledge in a source domain to help model performance in a target domain. It is particularly important to neural networks, which are very likely to be overfitting. In some fields like image processing, many studies have shown the effectiveness of neural network-based transfer learning. For neural NLP, however, existing studies have only casually applied transfer learning, and conclusions are inconsistent. In this paper, we conduct systematic case studies and provide an illuminating picture on the transferability of neural networks in NLP.

Sequence to Backward and Forward Sequences: A Content-Introducing Approach to Generative Short-Text Conversation

Using neural networks to generate replies in human-computer dialogue systems is attracting increasing attention over the past few years. However, the performance is not satisfactory: the neural network tends to generate safe, universally relevant replies which carry little meaning. In this paper, we propose a content-introducing approach to neural network-based generative dialogue systems. We first use pointwise mutual information (PMI) to predict a noun as a keyword, reflecting the main gist of the reply. We then propose seq2BF, a "sequence to backward and forward sequences" model, which generates a reply containing the given keyword. Experimental results show that our approach significantly outperforms traditional sequence-to-sequence models in terms of human evaluation and the entropy measure, and that the predicted keyword can appear at an appropriate position in the reply.

Compressing Neural Language Models by Sparse Word Representations

Neural networks are among the state-of-the-art techniques for language modeling. Existing neural language models typically map discrete words to distributed, dense vector representations. After information processing of the preceding context words by hidden layers, an output layer estimates the probability of the next word. Such approaches are time- and memory-intensive because of the large numbers of parameters for word embeddings and the output layer. In this paper, we propose to compress neural language models by sparse word representations. In the experiments, the number of parameters in our model increases very slowly with the growth of the vocabulary size, which is almost imperceptible. Moreover, our approach not only reduces the parameter space to a large extent, but also improves the performance in terms of the perplexity measure.

Improved Knowledge Base Completion by Path-Augmented TransR Model

Knowledge base completion aims to infer new relations from existing information. In this paper, we propose path-augmented TransR (PTransR) model to improve the accuracy of link prediction. In our approach, we base PTransR model on TransR, which is the best one-hop model at present. Then we regularize TransR with information of relation paths. In our experiment, we evaluate PTransR on the task of entity prediction. Experimental results show that PTransR outperforms previous models.
