Counting Quiver Representations over Finite Fields Via Graph Enumeration

Let $Γ$ be a quiver on n vertices $v_1, v_2, ..., v_n$ with $g_{ij}$ edges between $v_i$ and $v_j$, and let $α\in \N^n$. Hua gave a formula for $A_Γ(α, q)$, the number of isomorphism classes of absolutely indecomposable representations of $Γ$ over the finite field $\F_q$ with dimension vector $α$. Kac showed that $A_Γ(\bmα, q)$ is a polynomial in q with integer coefficients. Using Hua's formula, we show that for each non-negative integer s, the s-th derivative of $A_Γ(α,q)$ with respect to q, when evaluated at q = 1, is a polynomial in the variables $g_{ij}$, and we compute the highest degree terms in this polynomial. Our formulas for these coefficients depend on the enumeration of certain families of connected graphs.

Automorphism Groups of Finite p-Groups: Structure and Applications

This thesis has three goals related to the automorphism groups of finite $p$-groups. The primary goal is to provide a complete proof of a theorem showing that, in some asymptotic sense, the automorphism group of almost every finite $p$-group is itself a $p$-group. We originally proved this theorem in a paper with Martin; the presentation of the proof here contains omitted proof details and revised exposition. We also give a survey of the extant results on automorphism groups of finite $p$-groups, focusing on the order of the automorphism groups and on known examples. Finally, we explore a connection between automorphisms of finite $p$-groups and Markov chains. Specifically, we define a family of Markov chains on an elementary abelian $p$-group and bound the convergence rate of some of those chains.

A Survey on Automorphism Groups of Finite $p$-Groups

This survey on the automorphism groups of finite p-groups focuses on three major topics: explicit computations for familiar finite p-groups, such as the extraspecial p-groups and Sylow p-subgroups of Chevalley groups; constructing p-groups with specified automorphism groups; and the discovery of finite p-groups whose automorphism groups are or are not p-groups themselves. The material is presented with varying levels of detail, with some of the examples given in complete detail.

The Automorphism Group of a Finite p-Group is Almost Always a p-Group

Many common finite p-groups admit automorphisms of order coprime to p, and when p is odd, it is reasonably difficult to find finite p-groups whose automorphism group is a p-group. Yet the goal of this paper is to prove that the automorphism group of a finite p-group is almost always a p-group. The asymptotics in our theorem involve fixing any two of the following parameters and letting the third go to infinity: the lower p-length, the number of generators, and p. The proof of this theorem depends on a variety of topics: counting subgroups of a p-group; analyzing the lower p-series of a free group via its connection with the free Lie algebra; counting submodules of a module via Hall polynomials; and using numerical estimates on Gaussian coefficients.
