Nested cycles in large triangulations and crossing-critical graphs

We show that every sufficiently large plane triangulation has a large collection of nested cycles that either are pairwise disjoint, or pairwise intersect in exactly one vertex, or pairwise intersect in exactly two vertices. We apply this result to show that for each fixed positive integer $k$, there are only finitely many $k$-crossing-critical simple graphs of average degree at least six. Combined with the recent constructions of crossing-critical graphs given by Bokal, this settles the question of for which numbers $q>0$ there is an infinite family of $k$-crossing-critical simple graphs of average degree $q$.

Balanced lines in two-coloured point sets

Let $B$ and $R$ be point sets (of {\em blue} and {\em red} points, respectively) in the plane, such that $P:=B\cup R$ is in general position, and $|P|$ is even. A line $\ell$ is {\em balanced} if it spans one blue and one red point, and on each open halfplane of $\ell$, the number of blue points minus the number of red points is the same. We prove that $P$ has at least $\min \{|B|,|R|\} $ balanced lines. This refines a result by Pach and Pinchasi, who proved this for the case $|B|=|R|$.

The number of generalized balanced lines

Let $S$ be a set of $r$ red points and $b=r+2d$ blue points in general position in the plane, with $d\geq 0$. A line $\ell$ determined by them is said to be balanced if in each open half-plane bounded by $\ell$ the difference between the number of red points and blue points is $d$. We show that every set $S$ as above has at least $r$ balanced lines. The main techniques in the proof are rotations and a generalization, sliding rotations, introduced here.

On 3-decomposable geometric drawings of $K_n$

The point sets of all known optimal rectilinear drawings of $K_n$ share an unmistakeable clustering property, the so--called {\em 3--decomposability}. It is widely believed that the underlying point sets of all optimal rectilinear drawings of $K_n$ are 3--decomposable. We give a lower bound for the minimum number of $(\le k)$--sets in a 3--decomposable $n$--point set. As an immediate corollary, we obtain a lower bound for the crossing number $\rcr(\dd)$ of any rectilinear drawing $\dd$ of $K_n$ with underlying 3--decomposable point set, namely $\rcr(\dd) > {2/27}(15-π^{2})\binom{n}{4}+Θ(n^{3}) \approx 0.380029\binom{n}{4} + Θ(n^3)$. This closes this gap between the best known lower and upper bounds for the rectilinear crossing number $\rcr(K_n)$ of $K_n$ by over 40%, under the assumption of 3--decomposability.
