Numerical simulations on cleaning the neutron trap for measuring the neutron lifetime

We present the results of numerical simulations of the dynamical behavior of trajectories of ultra cold neutrons (UCN) in a magnetic trap. The main goal of our simulations was to optimize the trap parameters in order to minimize the characteristic times for removing from the trap those untrapped neutrons with relatively long escape times (cleaning the trap). Our results demonstrate that, by a proper choice of the trap parameters cleaning times can be reduced to 15 sec, or even less. Many other dynamical characteristics of the neutrons in the trap, including the conservation of the adiabatic invariant which characterizes the orientation of the magnetic moment along the local magnetic field, are also discussed.

Irreducible Frequent Patterns in Transactional Databases

Irreducible frequent patters (IFPs) are introduced for transactional databases. An IFP is such a frequent pattern (FP),(x1,x2,...xn), the probability of which, P(x1,x2,...xn), cannot be represented as a product of the probabilities of two (or more) other FPs of the smaller lengths. We have developed an algorithm for searching IFPs in transactional databases. We argue that IFPs represent useful tools for characterizing the transactional databases and may have important applications to bio-systems including the immune systems and for improving vaccination strategies. The effectiveness of the IFPs approach has been illustrated in application to a classification problem.

Iterative Algorithm for Finding Frequent Patterns in Transactional Databases

A high-performance algorithm for searching for frequent patterns (FPs) in transactional databases is presented. The search for FPs is carried out by using an iterative sieve algorithm by computing the set of enclosed cycles. In each inner cycle of level FPs composed of elements are generated. The assigned number of enclosed cycles (the parameter of the problem) defines the maximum length of the desired FPs. The efficiency of the algorithm is produced by (i) the extremely simple logical searching scheme, (ii) the avoidance of recursive procedures, and (iii) the usage of only one-dimensional arrays of integers.

Characteristic parameters and dynamics of two-qubit system in self-assembled monolayers

We suggest the application of nitronylnitroxide substituted with methyl group and 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidin organic radicals as 1/2-spin qubits for self-assembled monolayer quantum devices. We show that the oscillating cantilever driven adiabatic reversals technique can provide the read-out of the spin states. We compute components of the $g$-tensor and dipole-dipole interaction tensor for these radicals. We show that the delocalization of the spin in the radical may significantly influence the dipole-dipole interaction between the spins.

Improving the sensitivity of FM spectroscopy using nano-mechanical cantilevers

It is suggested that nano-mechanical cantilevers can be employed as high-Q filters to circumvent laser noise limitations on the sensitivity of frequency modulation spectroscopy. In this approach a cantilever is actuated by the radiation pressure of the amplitude modulated light that emerges from an absorber. Numerical estimates indicate that laser intensity noise will not prevent a cantilever from operating in the thermal noise limit, where the high Q's of cantilevers are most advantageous.

Spin Microscope Based on Optically Detected Magnetic Resonance

We propose a scanning magnetic microscope which has a photoluminescence nanoprobe implanted in the tip of an AFM or STM, or NSOM, and exhibits optically detected magnetic resonance (ODMR). The proposed spin microscope has nanoscale lateral resolution and the single spin sensitivity for AFM and STM.

Qubitless Quantum Logic

We discuss the implementation of quantum logic in a system of strongly interacting particles. The implementation is qubitless since ``logical qubits'' don't correspond to any physical two-state subsystems. As an illustration, we present the results of simulations of the quantum controlled-NOT gate and Shor's algorithm for a chain of spin-1/2 particles with Heisenberg coupling. Our proposal extends the current theory of quantum information processing to include systems with permanent strong coupling between the two-state subsystems.

Stability of the Ground State of a Harmonic Oscillator in a Monochromatic Wave

Classical and quantum dynamics of a harmonic oscillator in a monochromatic wave is studied in the exact resonance and near resonance cases. This model describes, in particular, a dynamics of a cold ion trapped in a linear ion trap and interacting with two lasers fields with close frequencies. Analytically and numerically a stability of the ``classical ground state'' (CGS) -- the vicinity of the point ($x=0, p=0$) -- is analyzed. In the quantum case, the method for studying a stability of the quantum ground state (QGS) is suggested, based on the quasienergy representation. The dynamics depends on four parameters: the detuning from the resonance, $δ=\ell-Ω/ω$, where $Ω$ and $ω$ are, respectively, the wave and the oscillator's frequencies; the positive integer (resonance) number, $\ell$; the dimensionless Planck constant, $h$, and the dimensionless wave amplitude, $ε$. For $δ=0$, the CGS and the QGS are unstable for resonance numbers $\ell=1, 2$. For small $ε$, the QGS becomes more stable with increasing $δ$ and decreasing $h$. When $ε$ increases, the influence of chaos on the stability of the QGS is analyzed for different parameters of the model, $\ell$, $δ$ and $h$.

A Modified Approach to Single-Spin Detection Using Magnetic Resonance Force Microscopy

The magnetic moment of a single spin interacting with a cantilever in magnetic resonance force microscopy (MRFM) experiences quantum jumps in orientation rather than smooth oscillations. These jumps cannot be detected by a conventional MRFM based on observation of driven resonant oscillations of a cantilever. In this paper, we propose a method which will allow detection of the magnetic signal from a single spin using a modification of a conventional MRFM. We estimate the opportunity to detect the magnetic signal from a single proton.

The Influence of Superpositional Wave Function Oscillations on Shor's Quantum Algorithm

We investigate the influence of superpositional wave function oscillations on the performance of Shor's quantum algorithm for factorization of integers. It is shown that the wave function oscillations can destroy the required quantum interference. This undesirable effect can be routinely eliminated using a resonant pulse implementation of quantum computation, but requires special analysis for non-resonant implementations.

Dynamics of the Measurement of Nuclear Spins in a Solid-State Quantum Computer

We study numerically the process of nuclear spin measurement in a solid-state quantum computer of the type proposed by Kane by modeling the quantum dynamics of two coupled nuclear spins on $^{31}$P donors implanted in silicon. We estimate the minimum measurement time necessary for the reliable transfer of quantum information from the nuclear spin subsystem to the electronic subsystem. We also calculate the probability of error for typical values of the external noise.

Transient Hamiltonian chaos in the cavity electrodynamics

We consider the chaotic dynamics of the interaction between an ensemble of two-level atoms in a high-Q Fabry-Perot cavity with a single mode of self-consistent field and with an external amplitude-modulated field. It is shown that in the case of an exact atom-field resonance and at the initial population of the atomic ground state, the Hamiltonian chaos in the system is always transient. The differences in the chaotic dynamics for the Fabry-Perot and ring cavity geometries are considered. The conditions for the experimental observation of the transient Hamiltonian chaos are discussed.

Dynamical Instabilities and Deterministic Chaos in Ballistic Electron Motion in Semiconductor Superlattices

We consider the motion of ballistic electrons within a superlattice miniband under the influence of an alternating electric field. We show that the interaction of electrons with the self-consistent electromagnetic field generated by the electron current may lead to the transition from regular to chaotic dynamics. We estimate the conditions for the experimental observation of this deterministic chaos and discuss the similarities of the superlattice system with the other condensed matter and quantum optical systems.

Quantum Entangled States and Quasiclassical Dynamics in Macroscopic Spin Systems

When dealing with macroscopic objects one usually observes quasiclassical phenomena, which can be described in terms of quasiclassical (or classical) equations of motion. Recent development of the theory of quantum computation is based on implementation of the entangled states which do not have a classical analogy. Using a simple example of a paramagnetic spin system we show that the entangled states can be detected in standard macroscopic experiments as a sharp deviation from quasiclassical motion.

Dynamics of a Quantum Control-Not Gate for an Ensemble of Four-Spin Molecules at Room Temperature

We investigate numerically a single-pulse implementation of a quantum Control-Not (CN) gate for an ensemble of Ising spin systems at room temperature. For an ensemble of four-spin ``molecules'' we simulate the time-evolution of the density matrix, for both digital and superpositional initial conditions. Our numerical calculations confirm the feasibility of implementation of quantum CN gate in this system at finite temperature, using electromagnetic $π$-pulse.

Coherent carrier dynamics in semiconductor superlattices

We investigate the coherent dynamics of carriers in semiconductor superlattices driven by ac-dc electric fields. We solve numerically the time-dependent effective-mass equation for the envelope function. We find that carriers undergo Rabi oscillations when the driving frequency is close to the separation between minibands.

Wigner Function Description of the A.C.-Transport Through a Two-Dimensional Quantum Point Contact

We have calculated the admittance of a two-dimensional quantum point contact (QPC) using a novel variant of the Wigner distribution function (WDF) formalism. In the semiclassical approximation, a Boltzman-like equation is derived for the partial WDF describing both propagating and nonpropagating electron modes in an effective potential generated by the adiabatic QPC. We show that this quantum kinetic approach leads to the well-known stepwise behavior of the real part of the admittance (the conductance), and of the imaginary part of the admittance (the emittance), in agreement with the latest results, which is determined by the number of propagating electron modes. It is shown, that the emittance is sensitive to the geometry of the QPC, and can be controlled by the gate voltage. We established that the emittance has contributions corresponding to both quantum inductance and quantum capacitance. Stepwise oscillations in the quantum inductance are determined by the harmonic mean of the velocities for the propagating modes, whereas the quantum capacitance is a significant mesoscopic manifestation of the non-propagating (reflecting) modes.
