Magnetorotational neutron star kicks

High velocity neutron stars, observed as rapidly moving radio-pulsars, are believed to gain high linear velocities -- kicks -- in aspherical supernova explosions. The mechanism of the kick formation is probably connected with anisotropic neutrino flash, and/or anisotropic matter ejection. In this paper, we investigate a neutron star kick origin in a magnetorotational (MR) supernova explosion model. The simulations have been done for a series of core collapse supernova models with initial equatorially asymmetric magnetic fields. We have realized 2D magnetohydrodynamic simulations, considering the protoneutron star kick and explosion properties in three different asymmetric magnetic field configurations. The simulations show, that in the MR supernova model protoneutron star kicks are formed with velocities up to ~500 km/s, due to asymmetric matter ejection in jets. It may explain the observed kick velocities of some neutron stars, formed in the MR supernovae explosions.

Time delay induced by plasma in strong lens systems

If the gravitational lens is surrounded by non-homoheneous plasma, in addition to the vacuum gravitational deflection, chromatic refraction occurs. Also, the speed of signal propagation decreases compared to vacuum. In this article, we investigate analytically the time delay in the case of gravitational lensing in plasma, focusing on strong lens systems. We take into account the following contributions: geometric delay due to trajectory bending in the presence of both gravity and plasma; potential delay of the ray in the gravitational field of the lens; dispersion delay in the plasma due to decrease of speed of light signal in the medium. We consider singular isothermal sphere as a model of gravitational lens, and arbitrary spherically symmetric distribution of surrounding plasma. For this scenario, plasma corrections for the time delay between two images are found in compact analytical form convenient for estimates. We discuss also the possible influence of the plasma on the value of the Hubble constant, determined from observations of the time delay in strong lens systems.

Analytical study of higher-order ring images of accretion disk around black hole

Gravitational lensing of a light source by a black hole leads to appearance of higher-order images produced by photons that loop around the black hole before reaching the observer. Higher-order images were widely investigated numerically and analytically, in particular using so-called strong deflection limit of gravitational deflection. After recent observations of the black hole image, attention has been drawn to higher-order rings, which are lensed images of the accreting matter of the black hole environment and can appear near the boundary of the black hole shadow. In this article, we use strong deflection limit technique to investigate higher-order ring images of luminous accretion disc around a Schwarzschild black hole. We consider thin disk given by the inner and outer radii and an observer located far from the black hole on the axis of symmetry. For this configuration, it becomes possible to find the angular radii, thicknesses, and solid angles of higher-order rings in the form of compact analytical expressions. We show that the size of the rings is mainly determined by the position of the inner boundary of the accretion disk, which makes it possible to use them to distinguish between different accretion models. Possible generalizations of our model to non-symmetric images can help to make the estimation of black hole angular momentum. We also present the analytical estimation of fluxes from higher-order images. Our method makes it easy to investigate $n=2$ and $n=3$ higher-order rings, the possible observation of which in future projects is currently being discussed.

Free electron gas and electron-positron pair equilibrium in magnetic field

The thermodynamic properties of electron gas under the extreme conditions of high temperature, high matter density, and/or a strong magnetic field largely determine the behaviour of matter in upper layers of neutron stars and accretion columns of magnetized neutron stars in binary systems. A strong magnetic field in these objects makes the motion of electrons across the field essentially quantum. The possible electron degeneracy and relativism of electrons are also important. When studying accretion onto a magnetar in a binary system, the intensive generation of electron-positron pairs in the quantizing magnetic field should also be taken into account. We consider in detail the thermodynamic properties of a gas of free electrons in strong magnetic fields, taking into account their relativism and degeneracy, as well as the equilibrium creation of electron-positron pairs in a high-temperature plasma in the presence of a quantizing magnetic field.

An Examination of Geometrical and Potential Time Delays in Gravitational Lensing

In this paper we investigate the relation between the potential and geometric time delays in gravitational lensing. In the original paper of Shapiro (1964), it is stated that there is a time delay in the radar signals between Earth and Venus that pass near a massive object (the Sun), compared to the path taken in the absence of any mass. The reason for this delay is connected with the influence of gravity on the coordinate velocity of a light ray in a gravitational potential. The contribution from the change of the path length, which happens to be of second order, is considered as negligible. Nevertheless, in the gravitational lens theory the geometrical delay, related to the change of path length, is routinely taken into account along with the potential term. In this work we explain this apparent discrepancy. We address the contribution of the geometric part of the time delay in different situations, and introduce a unified treatment with two limiting regimes of lensing. One of these limits corresponds to the time delay experiments near the Sun where the geometrical delay is shown to be negligible. The second corresponds to the typical gravitational lens scenario with multiple imaging where the geometrical delay is shown to be significant. We introduce a compact, analytical, and quantitative criteria based on relation between the angular position of source and the Einstein radius. This criterion allows one to find out easily when it is necessary to take the geometrical delay into account. In particular, it is shown that the geometrical delay is non-negligible in the case of good alignment between source, lens and observer, because in such a case it becomes a first order quantity (the same order as the potential term).

First analytical calculation of black hole shadow in McVittie metric

Cosmic expansion influences the angular size of black hole shadow. The most general way to describe a black hole embedded into an expanding universe is to use the McVittie metric. So far, the exact analytical solution for the shadow size in the McVittie metric, valid for arbitrary law of expansion and arbitrary position of the observer, has not been found. In this paper, we present the first analytical solution for angular size of black hole shadow in McVittie metric as seen by observer comoving with the cosmic expansion. We use a method of matched asymptotic expansions to find approximate solution valid within the entire range of possible positions of observer. As two particular examples, we consider black hole in de Sitter and matter dominated universe.

Three-dimensional heat transfer effects in external layers of a magnetized neutron star

Determination of a magnetic field structure on a neutron star (NS) surface is an important problem of a modern astrophysics. In a presence of strong magnetic fields a thermal conductivity of a degenerate matter is anisotropic. In this paper we present 3D anisotropic heat transfer simulations in outer layers of magnetized NSs, and construct synthetic thermal light curves. We have used a different from previous works tensorial thermal conductivity coefficient of electrons, derived from the analytical solution of the Boltzmann equation by the Chapman-Enskog method. We have obtained a NS surface temperature distribution in presence of dipole-plus-quadrupole magnetic fields. We consider a case, in which magnetic axes of a dipole and quadrupole components of the magnetic field are not aligned. To examine observational manifestations of such fields we have generated thermal light curves for the obtained temperature distributions using a composite black-body model. It is shown, that the simplest (only zero-order spherical function in quadrupole component) non-coaxial dipole-plus-quadrupole magnetic field distribution can significantly affect the thermal light curves, making pulse profiles non-symmetric and amplifying pulsations in comparison to the pure-dipolar field.

Black hole shadow as a standard ruler in cosmology

Advancements in the black hole shadow observations may allow us not only to investigate physics in the strong gravity regime, but also to use them in cosmological studies. In this paper, we propose to use the shadow of supermassive black holes as a standard ruler for cosmological applications assuming the black hole mass can be determined independently. First, observations at low redshift distances can be used to constrain the Hubble constant independently. Secondly, the angular size of shadows of high redshift black holes is increased due to cosmic expansion and may also be reachable with future observations. This would allow us to probe the cosmic expansion history for the redshift range elusive to other distance measurements. Additionally, shadow can be used to estimate the mass of black holes at high redshift, assuming that cosmology is known.

Hills and holes in the microlensing light curve due to plasma environment around gravitational lens

In this paper, we investigate the influence of the plasma surrounding the gravitational lens on the effect of microlensing. In presence of plasma around the lens, the deflection angle is determined by both the gravitational field of the lens and the chromatic refraction in the inhomogeneous plasma. We calculate microlensing light curves numerically for point-mass lens surrounded by power-law density distribution of plasma. A variety of possible curves is revealed, depending on the plasma density and frequency of observations. In the case of significant influence of plasma, the shape of microlensing light curve is strongly deformed in comparison with vacuum case. If the refractive deflection is large enough to compensate or to overcome the gravitational deflection, microlensing images can completely disappear for the observer. In this case, the remarkable effect occurs: formation of a 'hole' instead of a 'hill' in the center of microlensing light curve. Observational prospects of 'hill-hole' effect in different microlensing scenarios are discussed.

Time lag in transient galactic and extragalactic accreting sources

X-ray binaries are cauldrons of fundamental physical processes which appear along practically the whole electromagnetic spectrum. The sub-class of X-ray transient sources show multifrequency behaviour which deserve particular attention in order to understand the causing physics. These binary systems consist of a compact star and an optical star, therefore there is a mutual influence between these two stars that drive the low energy (LE) (i.e. radio, IR, optical) and high energy (HE) (i.e. UV, X-ray, $γ$-ray) processes. The LE processes are produced mostly on the optical star and the HE processes mostly on the compact star, typically a neutron star. Thus it appears evident that through the study of LE processes it is possible to understand also the HE processes and vice versa. In this paper we will discuss this problem starting from the experimental evidence of a delay between LE and HE processes detected for the first time in the X-ray/Be system A0535+26/HDE245770 (e.g. Giovannelli \& Sabau-Graziati, 2011; Giovannelli, Bisnovatyi-Kogan \& Klepnev, 2013 (here after GBK13); Giovannelli et al., 2015b). This delay is common in cataclysmic variables (CVs) and other binary systems with either a neutron star or a black hole. Since a delay between LE processes and HE processes has been experimentally observed in several active galactic nuclei (AGNs), we will discuss also the tidal disruption of stars by massive BHs, following the original idea of Rees (1998): stars in galactic nuclei can be captured or tidally disrupted by a central black hole. Some debris would be ejected at high speed, the remainder would be swallowed by the hole, causing a bright flare lasting at most a few years.

Gravitational Lensing in presence of Plasma: Strong Lens Systems, Black Hole Lensing and Shadow

In this article, we present an overview of the new developments in problems of the plasma influence on the effects of gravitational lensing, complemented by pieces of new material and relevant discussions. Deflection of light in the presence of gravity and plasma is determined by a complex combination of various physical phenomena: gravity, dispersion, refraction. In particular, the gravitational deflection itself, in a homogeneous plasma without refraction, differs from the vacuum one and depends on the frequency of the photon. In an inhomogeneous plasma, chromatic refraction also takes place. We describe chromatic effects in strong lens systems including a shift of angular position of image and a change in magnification. We also investigate high-order images that arise when lensing on a black hole surrounded by homogeneous plasma. The recent results of analytical studies of the effect of plasma on the shadow of the Schwarzschild and Kerr black holes are presented.

Shadow of a black hole at cosmological distance

Cosmic expansion is expected to influence on the size of black hole shadow observed by comoving observer. Except the simplest case of Schwarzschild black hole in de Sitter universe, analytical approach for calculation of shadow size in expanding universe is still not developed. In this paper we present approximate method based on using angular size redshift relation. This approach is appropriate for general case of any multicomponent universe (with matter, radiation and dark energy). In particular, we have shown that supermassive black holes at large cosmological distances in the universe with matter may give a shadow size approaching to the shadow size of the black hole in the center of our galaxy, and present sensitivity limits.

Black hole shadow in an expanding universe with a cosmological constant

We analytically investigate the influence of a cosmic expansion on the shadow of the Schwarzschild black hole. We suppose that the expansion is driven by a cosmological constant only and use the Kottler (or Schwarzschild-deSitter) spacetime as a model for a Schwarzschild black hole embedded in a deSitter universe. We calculate the angular radius of the shadow for an observer who is comoving with the cosmic expansion. It is found that the angular radius of the shadow shrinks to a non-zero finite value if the comoving observer approaches infinity.

Influence of a plasma on the shadow of a spherically symmetric black hole

We analytically calculate the influence of a plasma on the shadow of a black hole (or of another compact object). We restrict to spherically symmetric and static situations, where the shadow is circular. The plasma is assumed to be non-magnetized and pressure-less. We derive the general formulas for a spherically symmetric plasma density on an unspecified spherically symmetric and static spacetime. The formalism applies not only to black holes but also, e.g., to wormholes. As examples for the underlying spacetime model, we consider the Schwarzschild spacetime and the Ellis wormhole. In particular, we treat the case that the plasma is in radial free fall from infinity onto a Schwarzschild black hole. The perspectives of actually observing the influence of a plasma on the shadows of supermassive black holes are discussed.

Innermost stable circular orbits of spinning test particles in Schwarzschild and Kerr space-times

We consider the motion of classical spinning test particles in Schwarzschild and Kerr metrics and investigate innermost stable circular orbits (ISCO). The main goal of this work is to find analytically the small-spin corrections for the parameters of ISCO (radius, total angular momentum, energy, orbital angular frequency) of spinning test particles in the case of vectors of black hole spin, particle spin and orbital angular momentum being collinear to each other. We analytically derive the small-spin linear corrections for arbitrary Kerr parameter $a$. The cases of Schwarzschild, slowly rotating and extreme Kerr black hole are considered in details. For a slowly rotating black hole the ISCO parameters are obtained up to quadratic in $a$ and particle's spin $s$ terms. From the formulae obtained it is seen that the spin-orbital coupling has attractive character when spin and angular momentum are parallel and repulsive when they are antiparallel. For the case of the extreme Kerr black hole with co-rotating particle we succeed to find the exact analytical solution for the limiting ISCO parameters for arbitrary spin. It has been shown that the limiting values of ISCO radius and frequency do not depend on the particle's spin while values of energy and total angular momentum depend on it. We have also considered circular orbits of arbitrary radius and have found small-spin linear corrections for the total angular momentum and energy at given radius. System of equations for numerical calculation of ISCO parameters for arbitrary $a$ and $s$ is also explicitly written.

Galaxy clusters in presence of dark energy: a kinetic approach

Context. The external regions of galaxy clusters may be under strong influence of the dark energy, discovered by observations of the SN Ia at redshift z < 1. Aims. The presence of the dark energy in the gravitational equilibrium equation, with the Einstein $Λ$ term, contrasts the gravity, making the equilibrium configuration more extended in radius. Methods. In this paper we derive and solve the kinetic equation for an equilibrium configuration in presence of the dark energy, by considering the Newtonian regime, being the observed velocities of the galaxies inside a cluster largely smaller than the light velocity. Results. The presence of the dark energy in the gravitational equilibrium equation leads to wide regions in the $W_0-ρ_Λ$ diagram where the equilibrium solutions are not permitted, due to the prevalence of the effects of the dark energy on the gravity.

Gravitational lensing in plasma: Relativistic images at homogeneous plasma

We investigate the influence of plasma presence on relativistic images formed by Schwarzschild black hole lensing. When a gravitating body is surrounded by a plasma, the lensing angle depends on a frequency of the electromagnetic wave due to refraction properties, and the dispersion properties of the light propagation in gravitational field in plasma. The last effect leads to difference, even in uniform plasma, of gravitational deflection angle in plasma from vacuum case. This angle depends on the photon frequency, what resembles the properties of the refractive prism spectrometer. Here we consider the case of a strong deflection angle for the light, traveling near the Schwarzschild black hole, surrounded by a uniform plasma. Asymptotic formulae are obtained for the case of a very large deflection angle, exceeding $2π$. We apply these formulae for calculation of position and magnification of relativistic images in a homogeneous plasma, which are formed by the photons performing one or several revolutions around the central object. We conclude that the presence of the uniform plasma increases the angular size of relativistic rings or the angular separation of point images from the gravitating center. The presence of the uniform plasma increases also a magnification of relativistic images. The angular separation and the magnification become significantly larger than in the vacuum case, when the photon frequency goes to a plasma frequency.
