Weak convergence of the function-indexed integrated periodogram for infinite variance processes

In this paper, we study the weak convergence of the integrated periodogram indexed by classes of functions for linear processes with symmetric $α$-stable innovations. Under suitable summability conditions on the series of the Fourier coefficients of the index functions, we show that the weak limits constitute $α$-stable processes which have representations as infinite Fourier series with i.i.d. $α$-stable coefficients. The cases $α\in(0,1)$ and $α\in[1,2)$ are dealt with by rather different methods and under different assumptions on the classes of functions. For example, in contrast to the case $α\in(0,1)$, entropy conditions are needed for $α\in[1,2)$ to ensure the tightness of the sequence of integrated periodograms indexed by functions. The results of this paper are of additional interest since they provide limit results for infinite mean random quadratic forms with particular Toeplitz coefficient matrices.

Long Strange Segments, Ruin Probabilities and the Effect of Memory on Moving Average Processes

We obtain the rate of growth of long strange segments and the rate of decay of infinite horizon ruin probabilities for a class of infinite moving average processes with exponentially light tails. The rates are computed explicitly. We show that the rates are very similar to those of an i.i.d. process as long as the moving average coefficients decay fast enough. If they do not, then the rates are significantly different. This demonstrates the change in the length of memory in a moving average process associated with certain changes in the rate of decay of the coefficients.

Understanding heavy tails in a bounded world or, is a truncated heavy tail heavy or not?

We address the important question of the extent to which random variables and vectors with truncated power tails retain the characteristic features of random variables and vectors with power tails. We define two truncation regimes, soft truncation regime and hard truncation regime, and show that, in the soft truncation regime, truncated power tails behave, in important respects, as if no truncation took place. On the other hand, in the hard truncation regime much of "heavy tailedness" is lost. We show how to estimate consistently the tail exponent when the tails are truncated, and suggest statistical tests to decide on whether the truncation is soft or hard. Finally, we apply our methods to two recent data sets arising from computer networks.

Large deviations for point processes based on stationary sequences with heavy tails

In this paper we propose a framework that enables the study of large deviations for point processes based on stationary sequences with regularly varying tails. This framework allows us to keep track not of the magnitude of the extreme values of a process, but also of the order in which these extreme values appear. Particular emphasis is put on (infinite) linear processes with random coefficients. The proposed framework provide a rather complete description of the joint asymptotic behavior of the large values of the stationary sequence. We apply the general result on large deviations for point processes to derive the asymptotic decay of partial sum processes as well as ruin probabilities.

Inverse problems for regular variation of linear filters, a cancellation property for $σ$-finite measures and identification of stable laws

In this paper, we consider certain $σ$-finite measures which can be interpreted as the output of a linear filter. We assume that these measures have regularly varying tails and study whether the input to the linear filter must have regularly varying tails as well. This turns out to be related to the presence of a particular cancellation property in $σ$-finite measures, which in turn, is related to the uniqueness of the solution of certain functional equations. The techniques we develop are applied to weighted sums of i.i.d. random variables, to products of independent random variables, and to stochastic integrals with respect to Lévy motions.

Tail probabilities for infinite series of regularly varying random vectors

A random vector $X$ with representation $X=\sum_{j\geq0}A_jZ_j$ is considered. Here, $(Z_j)$ is a sequence of independent and identically distributed random vectors and $(A_j)$ is a sequence of random matrices, `predictable' with respect to the sequence $(Z_j)$. The distribution of $Z_1$ is assumed to be multivariate regular varying. Moment conditions on the matrices $(A_j)$ are determined under which the distribution of $X$ is regularly varying and, in fact, `inherits' its regular variation from that of the $(Z_j)$'s. We compute the associated limiting measure. Examples include linear processes, random coefficient linear processes such as stochastic recurrence equations, random sums and stochastic integrals.

Excursion sets of stable random fields

Studying the geometry generated by Gaussian and Gaussian- related random fields via their excursion sets is now a well developed and well understood subject. The purely non-Gaussian scenario has, however, not been studied at all. In this paper we look at three classes of stable random fields, and obtain asymptotic formulae for the mean values of various geometric characteristics of their excursion sets over high levels. While the formulae are asymptotic, they contain enough information to show that not only do stable random fields exhibit geometric behaviour very different from that of Gaussian fields, but they also differ significantly among themselves.

Stationary Symmetric alpha-Stable Discrete Parameter Random Fields

We establish a connection between the structure of a stationary symmetric alpha-stable random field (0 < alpha < 2) and ergodic theory of non-singular group actions, elaborating on a previous work by Rosinski (2000). With the help of this connection, we study the extreme values of the field over increasing boxes. Depending on the ergodic theoretical and group theoretical structures of the underlying action, we observe different kinds of asymptotic behavior of this sequence of extreme values.

Maharam Extension for Nonsingular Group Actions

We establish a generalization of the Maharam Extension Theorem to nonsingular group actions. We also present an extension of Krengel Representation Theorem of dissipative transformations to nonsingular actions.

Random rewards, fractional Brownian local times and stable self-similar processes

We describe a new class of self-similar symmetric $α$-stable processes with stationary increments arising as a large time scale limit in a situation where many users are earning random rewards or incurring random costs. The resulting models are different from the ones studied earlier both in their memory properties and smoothness of the sample paths.

Functional large deviations for multivariate regularly varying random walks

We extend classical results by A. V. Nagaev [Izv. Akad. Nauk UzSSR Ser. Fiz.--Mat. Nauk 6 (1969) 17--22, Theory Probab. Appl. 14 (1969) 51--64, 193--208] on large deviations for sums of i.i.d. regularly varying random variables to partial sum processes of i.i.d. regularly varying vectors. The results are stated in terms of a heavy-tailed large deviation principle on the space of càdlàg functions. We illustrate how these results can be applied to functionals of the partial sum process, including ruin probabilities for multivariate random walks and long strange segments. These results make precise the idea of heavy-tailed large deviation heuristics: in an asymptotic sense, only the largest step contributes to the extremal behavior of a multivariate random walk.

Null flows, positive flows and the structure of stationary symmetric stable processes

This paper elucidates the connection between stationary symmetric alpha-stable processes with 0<alpha<2 and nonsingular flows on measure spaces by describing a new and unique decomposition of stationary stable processes into those corresponding to positive flows and those corresponding to null flows. We show that a necessary and sufficient for a stationary stable process to be ergodic is that its positive component vanishes.

Extreme value theory, ergodic theory and the boundary between short memory and long memory for stationary stable processes

We study the partial maxima of stationary α-stable processes. We relate their asymptotic behavior to the ergodic theoretical properties of the flow. We observe a sharp change in the asymptotic behavior of the sequence of partial maxima as flow changes from being dissipative to being conservative, and argue that this may indicate a change from a short memory process to a long memory process.

On overload in a storage model, with a self-similar and infinitely divisible input

Let {X(t)}_{t\ge0} be a locally bounded and infinitely divisible stochastic process, with no Gaussian component, that is self-similar with index H>0. Pick constants γ>H and c>0. Let νbe the Lévy measure on R^{[0,\infty)} of X, and suppose that R(u)\equivν({y\inR^{[0,\infty)}:supt\ge 0y(t)/(1+ct^γ)>u}) is suitably ``heavy tailed'' as u\to\infty (e.g., subexponential with positive decrease). For the ``storage process'' Y(t)\equiv sup_{s\ge t}(X(s)-X(t)-c(s-t)^γ), we show that P{sup_{s\in[0,t(u)]}Y(s)>u}\sim P{Y(\hat t(u))>u} as u\to\infty, when 0\le \hat t(u)\le t(u) do not grow too fast with u [e.g., t(u)=o(u^{1/γ})].
