On color isomorphic subdivisions

Given a graph $H$ and an integer $k\geqslant 2$, let $f_{k}(n,H)$ be the smallest number of colors $C$ such that there exists a proper edge-coloring of the complete graph $K_{n}$ with $C$ colors containing no $k$ vertex-disjoint color isomorphic copies of $H$. In this paper, we prove that $f_{2}(n,H_{t})=Ω(n^{1+\frac{1}{2t-3}})$ where $H_{t}$ is the $1$-subdivision of the complete graph $K_{t}$. This answers a question of Conlon and Tyomkyn (arXiv: 2002.00921).

Color isomorphic even cycles and a related Ramsey problem

In this paper, we first study a new extremal problem recently posed by Conlon and Tyomkyn~(arXiv: 2002.00921). Given a graph $H$ and an integer $k\geqslant 2$, let $f_{k}(n,H)$ be the smallest number of colors $c$ such that there exists a proper edge-coloring of the complete graph $K_{n}$ with $c$ colors containing no $k$ vertex-disjoint color-isomorphic copies of $H$. Using algebraic properties of polynomials over finite fields, we give an explicit proper edge-coloring of $K_{n}$ and show that $f_{k}(n, C_{4})=Θ(n)$ when $k\geqslant 3$ and $n\rightarrow\infty$. The methods we used in the edge-coloring may be of some independent interest. We also consider a related generalized Ramsey problem. For given graphs $G$ and $H,$ let $r(G,H,q)$ be the minimum number of edge-colors (not necessarily proper) of $G$, such that the edges of every copy of $H\subseteq G$ together receive at least $q$ distinct colors. Establishing the relation to the Turán number of specified bipartite graphs, we obtain some general lower bounds for $r(K_{n,n},K_{s,t},q)$ with a broad range of $q$.

New lower bounds for the Turán density of $PG_{m}(q)$

Let $\mathcal{H}$ be an $r$-uniform hypergraph. The Turán number $\text{ex}(n,\mathcal{H})$ is the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex $\mathcal{H}$-free $r$-uniform hypergraph. The Turán density of $\mathcal{H}$ is defined by \[π(\mathcal{H})=\lim_{n\rightarrow\infty}\frac{\text{ex}(n,\mathcal{H})}{\binom{n}{r}}.\] In this paper, we consider the Turán density of projective geometries. We give two new constructions of $PG_{m}(q)$-free hypergraphs which improve some results given by Keevash (J. Combin. Theory Ser. A, 111: 289--309, 2005). Based on an upper bound of blocking sets of $PG_m(q)$, we give a new general lower bound for the Turán density of $PG_{m}(q)$. By a detailed analysis of the structures of complete arcs in $PG_2(q)$, we also get better lower bounds for the Turán density of $PG_2(q)$ with $q=3,\ 4,\ 5,\ 7,\ 8$.

Some tight lower bounds for Turán problems via constructions of multi-hypergraphs

Recently, several hypergraph Turán problems were solved by the powerful random algebraic method. However, the random algebraic method usually requires some parameters to be very large, hence we are concerned about how these Turán numbers depend on such large parameters of the forbidden hypergraphs. In this paper, we determine the dependence on such specified large constant for several hypergraph Turán problems. More specifically, for complete $r$-partite $r$-uniform hypergraphs, we show that if $s_{r}$ is sufficiently larger than $s_{1},s_{2},\ldots,s_{r-1},$ then $$\textup{ex}_{r}(n,K_{s_{1},s_{2},\ldots,s_{r}}^{(r)})=Θ(s_{r}^{\frac{1}{s_{1}s_{2}\cdots s_{r-1}}}n^{r-\frac{1}{s_{1}s_{2}\cdots s_{r-1}}}).$$ For complete bipartite $r$-uniform hypergraphs, we prove that if $s$ is sufficiently larger than $t,$ we have $$\textup{ex}_{r}(n,K_{s,t}^{(r)})=Θ(s^{\frac{1}{t}}n^{r-\frac{1}{t}}).$$ In particular, our results imply that the famous Kővári--Sós--Turán's upper bound $\textup{ex}(n,K_{s,t})=O(t^{\frac{1}{s}}n^{2-\frac{1}{s}})$ has the correct dependence on large $t$. The main approach is to construct random multi-hypergraph via a variant of random algebraic method.

On an inverse problem of the Erdős-Ko-Rado type theorems

A family of subsets $\mathcal{F}\subseteq {[n]\choose k}$ is called intersecting if any two of its members share a common element. Consider an intersecting family, a direct problem is to determine its maximal size and the inverse problem is to characterize its extremal structure and its corresponding stability. The famous Erdős-Ko-Rado theorem answered both direct and inverse problems and led the era of studying intersection problems for finite sets. In this paper, we consider the following quantitative intersection problem which can be viewed an inverse problem for Erdős-Ko-Rado type theorems: For $\mathcal{F}\subseteq {[n]\choose k}$, define its \emph{total intersection} as $\mathcal{I}(\mathcal{F})=\sum_{F_1,F_2\in \mathcal{F}}|F_1\cap F_2|$. Then, what is the structure of $\mathcal{F}$ when it has the maximal total intersection among all families in ${[n]\choose k}$ with the same family size? Using a pure combinatorial approach, we provide two structural characterizations of the optimal family of given size that maximizes the total intersection. As a consequence, for $n$ large enough and $\mathcal{F}$ of proper size, these characterizations show that the optimal family $\mathcal{F}$ is indeed $t$-intersecting ($t\geq 1$). To a certain extent, this reveals the relationship between properties of being intersecting and maximizing the total intersection. Also, we provide an upper bound on $\mathcal{I}(\mathcal{F})$ for several ranges of $|\mathcal{F}|$ and determine the unique optimal structure for families with sizes of certain values.

On the Turán number of 1-subdivision of $K_{3,t}$

For a graph $H$, the 1-subdivision of $H$, denoted by $H'$, is the graph obtained by replacing the edges of $H$ by internally disjoint paths of length 2. Recently, Conlon, Janzer and Lee (arXiv: 1903.10631) asked the following question: For any integer $s\ge2$, estimate the smallest $t$ such that $\textup{ex}(n,K_{s,t}')=Ω(n^{\frac{3}{2}-\frac{1}{2s}})$. In this paper, we consider the case $s=3$. More precisely, we provide an explicit construction giving \begin{align*} \text{ex}(n,K_{3,30}')=Ω(n^{\frac{4}{3}}), \end{align*} which reduces the estimation for the smallest value of $t$ from a magnitude of $10^{56}$ to the number $30$. The construction is algebraic, which is based on some equations over finite fields.

Some New Results on Splitter Sets

Splitter sets have been widely studied due to their applications in flash memories, and their close relations with lattice tilings and conflict avoiding codes. In this paper, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of nonsingular perfect splitter sets, $B[-k_1,k_2](p)$ sets, where $0\le k_{1}\leq k_{2}=4$. Meanwhile, constructions of nonsingular perfect splitter sets are given. When perfect splitter sets do not exist, we present four new constructions of quasi-perfect splitter sets. Finally, we give a connection between nonsingular splitter sets and Cayley graphs, and as a byproduct, a general lower bound on the maximum size of nonsingular splitter sets is given.

3-uniform hypergraphs with few Berge paths of length three between any two vertices

Recently, Berge theta hypergraphs have received special attention due to the similarity with Berge even cycles. Let $r$-uniform Berge theta hypergraph $Θ_{\ell,t}^{B}$ be the $r$-uniform hypergraph consisting of $t$ internally disjoint Berge paths of length $\ell$ with the same pair of endpoints. In this work, we determine the Turán number of $3$-uniform Berge theta hypergraph when $\ell=3$ and $t$ is relatively small. More precisely, we provide an explicit construction giving \begin{align*} \textup{ex}_{3}(n,Θ_{3,217}^{B})=Ω(n^{\frac{4}{3}}). \end{align*} This matches an earlier upper bound by He and Tait up to an absolute constant factor. The construction is algebraic, which is based on some equations over finite fields, and the parameter $t$ in our construction is much smaller than that in random algebraic construction. Our main technique is using the resultant of polynomials, which appears to be a powerful technique to eliminate variables.

Maximum subsets of $\mathbb{F}^n_q$ containing no right angles

Recently, Croot, Lev, and Pach (Ann. of Math., 185:331--337, 2017.) and Ellenberg and Gijswijt (Ann. of Math., 185:339--443, 2017.) developed a new polynomial method and used it to prove upper bounds for three-term arithmetic progression free sets in $\mathbb{Z}_4^n$ and $\mathbb{F}_3^n$, respectively. Their approach was later summarized by Tao and is now known as the slice rank method. In this paper, we apply this method to obtain a new upper bound on the cardinality of subsets of $\mathbb{F}^n_q$ which contain no right angles. More precisely, let $q$ be a fixed odd prime power and $x\cdot y$ be the standard inner product of two vectors $x,y\in\mathbb{F}_q^n$, we prove that the maximum cardinality of a subset $A\subseteq\mathbb{F}_q^n$ without three distinct elements $x,y,z\in A$ satisfying $(z-x)\cdot (y-x)=0$ is at most $\binom{n+q}{q-1}+3$. For sufficiently large $n$, our result significantly improves the previous upper bound of Bennett (European J. Combin., 70:155--163, 2018.), who showed that $|A|=\mathcal{O}(q^{\frac{n+2}{3}})$.

Multi-part cross-intersecting families

Let $\mathcal{A}\subseteq{[n]\choose a}$ and $\mathcal{B}\subseteq{[n]\choose b}$ be two families of subsets of $[n]$, we say $\mathcal{A}$ and $\mathcal{B}$ are cross-intersecting if $A\cap B\neq \emptyset$ for all $A\in\mathcal{A}$, $B\in\mathcal{B}$. In this paper, we study cross-intersecting families in the multi-part setting. By characterizing the independent sets of vertex-transitive graphs and their direct products, we determine the sizes and structures of maximum-sized multi-part cross-intersecting families. This generalizes the results of Hilton's and Frankl--Tohushige's on cross-intersecting families in the single-part setting.

Some extremal results on K_{s,t}-free graphs

For graphs $H$ and $F$, let $\text{ex}(n,H,F)$ be the maximum possible number of copies of $H$ in an $F$-free graph on $n$ vertices. The study of this function, which generalizes the well-known Turán number of graphs, was systematically studied by Alon and Shikhelman recently. In this paper, we show that for any $m$ and $t\ge 2m-3\ge3$, \[\text{ex}(n,K_{m},K_{2,t})=Θ(n^{\frac{3}{2}}).\] This result improves some results of Alon and Shikhelman (J. Combin. Theory Ser. B, 121:146-172, 2016). We also study the $k$-partite $K_{s,t}$-free graph, we show that for any $k\ge3$ and $t\ge(k-1)(s-1)!+1$, \[\text{ex}_{χ\le k}(n,K_{s,t})\ge\frac{k-1}{2k}n^{2-1/s}+o(n^{2-1/s}).\] Moreover, we give a new construction of $3$-partite $K_{2,2t+1}$-free graphs with many edges.

On vertex-induced weighted Turán problems

Recently, Bennett et al. introduced the vertex-induced weighted Turán problem. In this paper, we consider their open Turán problem under sum-edge-weight function and characterize the extremal structure of $K_{l}$-free graphs. Based on these results, we propose a generalized version of the Erdős-Stone theorem for weighted graphs under two types of vertex-induced weight functions.

New Bounds on the Field Size for Maximally Recoverable Codes Instantiating Grid-like Topologies

In recent years, the rapidly increasing amounts of data created and processed through the internet resulted in distributed storage systems employing erasure coding based schemes. Aiming to balance the tradeoff between data recovery for correlated failures and efficient encoding and decoding, distributed storage systems employing maximally recoverable codes came up. Unifying a number of topologies considered both in theory and practice, Gopalan et al. \cite{Gopalan2017} initiated the study of maximally recoverable codes for grid-like topologies. In this paper, we focus on the maximally recoverable codes that instantiate grid-like topologies $T_{m\times n}(1,b,0)$. To characterize the property of codes for these topologies, we introduce the notion of \emph{pseudo-parity check matrix}. Then, using the Combinatorial Nullstellensatz, we establish the first polynomial upper bound on the field size needed for achieving the maximal recoverability in topologies $T_{m\times n}(1,b,0)$. And using hypergraph independent set approach, we further improve this general upper bound for topologies $T_{4\times n}(1,2,0)$ and $T_{3\times n}(1,3,0)$. By relating the problem to generalized \emph{Sidon sets} in $\mathbb{F}_q$, we also obtain non-trivial lower bounds on the field size for maximally recoverable codes that instantiate topologies $T_{4\times n}(1,2,0)$ and $T_{3\times n}(1,3,0)$.

New Theoretical Bounds and Constructions of Permutation Codes under Block Permutation Metric

Permutation codes under different metrics have been extensively studied due to their potentials in various applications. Generalized Cayley metric is introduced to correct generalized transposition errors, including previously studied metrics such as Kendall's $τ$-metric, Ulam metric and Cayley metric as special cases. Since the generalized Cayley distance between two permutations is not easily computable, Yang et al. introduced a related metric of the same order, named the block permutation metric. Given positive integers $n$ and $d$, let $\mathcal{C}_{B}(n,d)$ denote the maximum size of a permutation code in $S_n$ with minimum block permutation distance $d$. In this paper, we focus on the theoretical bounds of $\mathcal{C}_{B}(n,d)$ and the constructions of permutation codes under block permutation metric. Using a graph theoretic approach, we improve the Gilbert-Varshamov type bound by a factor of $Ω(\log{n})$, when $d$ is fixed and $n$ goes into infinity. We also propose a new encoding scheme based on binary constant weight codes. Moreover, an upper bound beating the sphere-packing type bound is given when $d$ is relatively close to $n$.

Some intriguing upper bounds for separating hash families

An $N\times n$ matrix on $q$ symbols is called $\{w_1,\ldots,w_t\}$-separating if for arbitrary $t$ pairwise disjoint column sets $C_1,\ldots,C_t$ with $|C_i|=w_i$ for $1\le i\le t$, there exists a row $f$ such that $f(C_1),\ldots,f(C_t)$ are also pairwise disjoint, where $f(C_i)$ denotes the collection of components of $C_i$ restricted to row $f$. Given integers $N,q$ and $w_1,\ldots,w_t$, denote by $C(N,q,\{w_1,\ldots,w_t\})$ the maximal $n$ such that a corresponding matrix does exist. The determination of $C(N,q,\{w_1,\ldots,w_t\})$ has received remarkable attentions during the recent years. The main purpose of this paper is to introduce two novel methodologies to attack the upper bound of $C(N,q,\{w_1,\ldots,w_t\})$. The first one is a combination of the famous graph removal lemma in extremal graph theory and a Johnson-type recursive inequality in coding theory, and the second one is the probabilistic method. As a consequence, we obtain several intriguing upper bounds for some parameters of $C(N,q,\{w_1,\ldots,w_t\})$, which significantly improve the previously known results.

Optimal binary linear locally repairable codes with disjoint repair groups

In recent years, several classes of codes are introduced to provide some fault-tolerance and guarantee system reliability in distributed storage systems, among which locally repairable codes (LRCs for short) play an important role. However, most known constructions are over large fields with sizes close to the code length, which lead to the systems computationally expensive. Due to this, binary LRCs are of interest in practice. In this paper, we focus on binary linear LRCs with disjoint repair groups. We first derive an explicit bound for the dimension k of such codes, which can be served as a generalization of the bounds given in [11, 36, 37]. We also give several new constructions of binary LRCs with minimum distance $d = 6$ based on weakly independent sets and partial spreads, which are optimal with respect to our newly obtained bound. In particular, for locality $r\in \{2,3\}$ and minimum distance $d = 6$, we obtain the desired optimal binary linear LRCs with disjoint repair groups for almost all parameters.

Private Information Retrieval from MDS Coded Databases with Colluding Servers under Several Variant Models

Private information retrieval (PIR) gets renewed attentions due to its information-theoretic reformulation and its application in distributed storage system (DSS). The general PIR model considers a coded database containing $N$ servers storing $M$ files. Each file is stored independently via the same arbitrary $(N,K)$-MDS code. A user wants to retrieve a specific file from the database privately against an arbitrary set of $T$ colluding servers. A key problem is to analyze the PIR capacity, defined as the maximal number of bits privately retrieved per one downloaded bit. Several extensions for the general model appear by bringing in various additional constraints. In this paper, we propose a general PIR scheme for several variant PIR models including: PIR with robust servers, PIR with Byzantine servers, the multi-file PIR model and PIR with arbitrary collusion patterns.

A general private information retrieval scheme for MDS coded databases with colluding servers

The problem of private information retrieval gets renewed attentions in recent years due to its information-theoretic reformulation and applications in distributed storage systems. PIR capacity is the maximal number of bits privately retrieved per one bit of downloaded bit. The capacity has been fully solved for some degenerating cases. For a general case where the database is both coded and colluded, the exact capacity remains unknown. We build a general private information retrieval scheme for MDS coded databases with colluding servers. Our scheme achieves the rate $(1+R+R^2+\cdots+R^{M-1})$, where $R=1-\frac{{{N-T}\choose K}}{N\choose K}$. Compared to existing PIR schemes, our scheme performs better for a certain range of parameters and is suitable for any underlying MDS code used in the distributed storage system.
