Exclusive Two-Vector-Meson Production from e^+ e^- Annihilation

The exclusive production of pairs of vector mesons with J^{PC} = 1^{--} in e^+ e^- collisions can proceed through e^+ e^- annihilation into two virtual photons. At energies much greater than the meson masses, the cross section is dominated by the independent fragmentation of the virtual photons into the vector mesons. The fragmentation approximation is used to calculate the cross sections and angular distributions for pairs of vector mesons that can be produced at the B factories. The predicted cross sections for rho^0 + rho^0 and rho^0 + phi production agree with recent measurements by the BaBar Collaboration. For the production of two charmonium vector mesons, the nonfragmentation corrections to the cross sections are calculated by using the NRQCD factorization formalism. The predicted cross sections for J/psi + J/psi and J/psi + psi(2S) production are compatible with upper limits set by the Belle Collaboration.

Potential-model calculation of an order-v^2 NRQCD matrix element

We present two methods for computing dimensionally-regulated NRQCD heavy-quarkonium matrix elements that are related to the second derivative of the heavy-quarkonium wave function at the origin. The first method makes use of a hard-cutoff regulator as an intermediate step and requires knowledge only of the heavy-quarkonium wave function. It involves a significant cancellation that is an obstacle to achieving high numerical accuracy. The second method is more direct and yields a result that is identical to the Gremm-Kapustin relation, but it is limited to use in potential models. It can be generalized to the computation of matrix elements of higher order in the heavy-quark velocity and can be used to resum the contributions to decay and production rates that are associated with those matrix elements. We apply these methods to the Cornell potential model and compute a matrix element for the J/psi state that appears in the leading relativistic correction to the production and decay of that state through the color-singlet quark-antiquark channel.

Exclusive Double-Charmonium Production from e^+ e^- Annihilation into Two Virtual Photons

We calculate the contributions from QED processes involving two virtual photons to the cross sections for e^+ e^- annihilation into two charmonium states with the same C-parity. Generically, the cross sections are three orders of magnitude smaller than those for charmonia with opposite C-parity because they are suppressed by a factor of alpha^2/alpha_s^2. However, if both charmonia have quantum numbers J^{PC} = 1^{--}, then there is a contribution to the cross section that involves the fragmentation of each photon into a charmonium. The fragmentation contribution is enhanced by powers of E_{beam}/m_c, the ratio of the beam energy to the charm-quark mass, and this enhancement can compensate for the suppression factor that is associated with the coupling constants. In particular, the predicted cross section for J/psi + J/psi at the B factories is larger than that for J/psi + eta_c.

e^+ e^- Annihilation into J/psi + J/psi

Recent measurements by the Belle Collaboration of the exclusive production of two charmonia in e^+ e^- annihilation differ substantially from theoretical predictions. We suggest that a significant part of the discrepancy can be explained by the process e^+ e^- -> J/psi + J/psi. Because the J/psi + J/psi production process can proceed through fragmentation of two virtual photons into two cc-bar pairs, its cross section may be larger than that for J/psi +eta_c by about a factor 1.8, in spite of a suppression factor alpha^2/alpha_s^2 that is associated with the QED and QCD coupling constants.

Spin correlations and velocity-scaling in color-octet NRQCD matrix elements

We compute spin-dependent decay matrix elements for S-wave charmonium and bottomonium in lattice nonrelativistic quantum chromodynamics (NRQCD). Particular emphasis is placed upon the color-octet matrix elements, since the corresponding production matrix elements are expected to appear in the dominant contributions to the production cross sections at large transverse momenta. We use three slightly different versions of the heavy-quark lattice Green's functions in order to minimize the contributions that scale as powers of the ultraviolet cutoff. The lattice matrix elements that we calculate obey the hierarchy that is suggested by the velocity-scaling rules of NRQCD.

Comparison of the color-evaporation model and the NRQCD factorization approach in charmonium production

We compare the color-evaporation model (CEM) and nonrelativistic QCD (NRQCD) factorization predictions for inclusive quarkonium production. Using the NRQCD factorization formulas for quarkonium production and for perturbative QQ-bar production, we deduce relationships that are implied by the CEM between the nonperturbative NRQCD matrix elements that appear in the factorization formula for quarkonium production. These relationships are at odds with the phenomenological values of the matrix elements that have been extracted from the Tevatron data for charmonium production at large transverse momentum. A direct comparison of the CEM and NRQCD factorization predictions with the CDF charmonium production data reveals that the CEM fits to the data are generally unsatisfactory, while the NRQCD factorization fits are generally compatible with the data. The inclusion of k_T smearing improves the CEM fits substantially, but significant incompatibilities remain. The NRQCD factorization fits to the chi_c data indicate that multiple gluon radiation is an essential ingredient in obtaining the correct shape of the cross section as a function of p_T.

Relativistic corrections to gluon fragmentation into spin-triplet S-wave quarkonium

We use the NRQCD factorization formalism to calculate the relativistic corrections to the fragmentation function for a gluon fragmenting into a spin-triplet S-wave heavy quarkonium. We make use of the gauge-invariant formulation of the fragmentation function of Collins and Soper. The color-octet contribution receives a large, negative relativistic correction, while the color-singlet contribution receives a large, positive relativistic correction. The considerable decrease in the color-octet contribution requires a corresponding increase in the phenomenological value of the leading color-octet matrix element in order to maintain a fit to the Fermilab Tevatron data.

Inclusive Heavy-Quarkonium Production in Hadronic Collisions

We discuss the theory of inclusive production of heavy quarkonium, the comparison between theory and experiment, and the expected nuclear effects in cold nuclear targets. We also present predictions, based on Nonrelativistic QCD (NRQCD), for quarkonium production cross sections in the LHC energy range. We find that nuclear effects in the production cross sections are largely independent of the sizes of the NRQCD matrix elements, the charmonium state that is produced and, in the color-octet case, largely independent of the partonic subprocess that produces the heavy quark-antiquark pair.

Radiative decay of Upsilon(nS) into S-wave sbottomonium

A calculation is presented of the radiative decay of the Upsilon(nS) into a bound state of bottom squarks. Predictions are provided of the branching fraction as a function of the masses of the bottom squark and the gluino. Branching fractions as large as several times 10^{-4} are obtained for supersymmetric particle masses in the range suggested by the analysis of bottom-quark production cross sections. Data are shown that limit the range of allowed masses. Forthcoming high-statistics data from the CLEO Collaboration offer possibilities of discovery or significant new bounds on the existence and masses of supersymmetric particles.

Order-v^4 Corrections to S-wave Quarkonium Decay

We compute corrections of relative order v^4 to the rates for the decays of ^1S_0 heavy quarkonium into two photons and into light hadrons and for the decays of ^3S_1 heavy quarkonium into a lepton pair and into light hadrons. In particular, we compute the coefficients of the decay operators that have the same quantum numbers as the heavy quarkonium. We also confirm previous calculations of the order-v^2 corrections to these rates. We find that the v expansion converges well for the decays of ^1S_0 heavy quarkonium and for the decay of ^3S_1 heavy quarkonium into a lepton pair. Large higher-order-in-v corrections appear in the decay of ^3S_1 heavy quarkonium into light hadrons. However, we find that the series of coefficients of operators with ^3S_1 quantum numbers, which yields a large correction in order v^2, yields a smaller correction in order v^4.

Resummation of QCD Corrections to the eta_c Decay Rate

We examine the ratio of the decay rate of the eta_c into light hadrons to the decay rate into photons and find that most of the large next-to-leading-order (NLO) correction is associated with running of the strong coupling alpha_s. We resum such contributions by analyzing final-state chains of vacuum-polarization bubbles. We show that the nonperturbative parts of the bubble chains can be absorbed into a color-octet matrix element, once one has used contour deformations of the phase-space integrals to cancel certain contributions. We argue that these contributions are incompatible with the uncertainty principle. We also argue that perturbation theory is reliable only if one carries out the phase-space integrations before the perturbation summation. Our results are in good agreement with experiment and differ considerably from those that one obtains by applying the scale-setting method of Brodsky, Lepage, and Mackenzie to the NLO result.

Renormalon Ambiguities in NRQCD Operator Matrix Elements

We analyze the renormalon ambiguities that appear in factorization formulas in QCD. Our analysis contains a simple argument that the ambiguities in the short-distance coefficients and operator matrix elements are artifacts of dimensional-regularization factorization schemes and are absent in cutoff schemes. We also present a method for computing the renormalon ambiguities in operator matrix elements and apply it to a computation of the ambiguities in the matrix elements that appear in the NRQCD factorization formulas for the annihilation decays of S-wave quarkonia. Our results, combined with those of Braaten and Chen for the short-distance coefficients, provide an explicit demonstration that the ambiguities cancel in the physical decay rates. In addition, we analyze the renormalon ambiguities in the Gremm-Kapustin relation and in various definitions of the heavy-quark mass.

Rigorous QCD Analysis of Inclusive Annihilation and Production of Heavy Quarkonium

A rigorous QCD analysis of the inclusive annihilation decay rates of heavy quarkonium states is presented. The effective-field-theory framework of nonrelativistic QCD is used to separate the short-distance scale of annihilation, which is set by the heavy quark mass $M$, from the longer-distance scales associated with quarkonium structure. The annihilation decay rates are expressed in terms of nonperturbative matrix elements of 4-fermion operators in nonrelativistic QCD, with coefficients that can be computed using perturbation theory in the coupling constant $α_s(M)$. The matrix elements are organized into a hierarchy according to their scaling with $v$, the typical velocity of the heavy quark. An analogous factorization formalism is developed for the production cross sections of heavy quarkonium in processes involving momentum transfers of order $M$ or larger. The factorization formulas are applied to the annihilation decay rates and production cross sections of S-wave states, up to corrections of relative order $v^3$, and of P-wave states, up to corrections of relative order $v^2$.

A Lattice Formulation of Chiral Gauge Theories

We present a method for formulating gauge theories of chiral fermions in lattice field theory. The method makes use of a Wilson mass to remove doublers. Gauge invariance is then restored by modifying the theory in two ways: the magnitude of the fermion determinant is replaced with the square root of the determinant for a fermion with vector-like couplings to the gauge field; a double limit is taken, in which the lattice spacing associated with the fermion field is sent to zero before the lattice spacing associated with the gauge field. The method applies only to theories whose fermions are in an anomaly-free representation of the gauge group. We also present a related technique for computing matrix elements of operators involving fermion fields. Although the analyses of these methods are couched in weak-coupling perturbation theory, it is argued that the computational prescriptions are gauge invariant in the presence of a nonperturbative gauge-field configuration.
