Local Well-Posedness of a Model for Stress-Driven Growth in the Presence of Nutrients

A model for morphoelastic growth, that is, growth influenced by elastic stress, driven by the absorption of nutrients is considered. The model features a multiplicative decomposition of the deformation gradient into an elastic contribution and a growth tensor. While the evolution of the system is governed by an ordinary differential equation for the growth tensor on a suitable Banach space, which depends on the elastic stresses and the concentration of a nutrient field, the total deformation is given by the solution of a quasi-static equilibrium equation arising from the formal Euler-Lagrange equations of a hyperelastic variational integral. The nutrient concentration is determined by a linear elliptic reaction-diffusion equation which is formulated in Lagrangian coordinates and whose coefficients depend on the growth tensor as well as the deformation gradient accounting for the change of material properties due to elastic deformation and growth. Existence and uniqueness of solutions of this fully coupled system of differential equations is proven via a fixed-point argument.

Regularity Properties of Solutions of a Model for Morphoelastic Growth in the Presence of Nutrients in One Spatial Dimension

Regularity properties of solutions for a class of quasi-stationary models in one spatial dimension for stress-modulated growth in the presence of a nutrient field are proven. At a given point in time the configuration of a body after pure growth is determined by means of a family of ordinary differential equations in every point in space. Subsequently, an elastic deformation, which is given by the minimizer of a hyperelastic variational integral, is applied in order to restore Dirichlet boundary conditions. While the ordinary differential equations governing the growth process depend on the elastic stress and the pullback of a nutrient concentration in the current configuration, the hyperelastic variational problem is solved on the intermediate configuration after pure growth. Additionally, the coefficients of the reaction-diffusion equation determining the nutrient concentration in the current configuration depend on the elastic deformation and the deformation due to pure growth.

Optimal rigidity estimates for maps of a compact Riemannian manifold to itself

Let $M$ be a smooth, compact, connected, oriented Riemannian manifold, and let $\imath: M \to \mathbb R^d$ be an isometric embedding. We show that a Sobolev map $f: M \to M$ which has the property that the differential $df(q)$ is close to the set $SO(T_q M, T_{f(q)} M)$ of orientation preserving isometries (in an $L^p$ sense) is already $W^{1,p}$ close to a global isometry of $M$. More precisely we prove for $p \in (1,\infty)$ the optimal linear estimate $$\inf_{\phi \in \mathrm{Isom}_+(M)} \| \imath \circ f - \imath \circ \phi\|_{W^{1,p}}^p \le C E_p(f)$$ where $$ E_p(f) := \int_M {\rm dist}^p(df(q), SO(T_q M, T_{f(q)} M)) \, d{\rm vol}_M$$ and where $\mathrm{Isom}_+(M)$ denotes the group of orientation preserving isometries of $M$. This extends the Euclidean rigidity estimate of Friesecke-James-M\"uller [Comm. Pure Appl. Math. {\bf 55} (2002), 1461--1506] to Riemannian manifolds. It also extends the Riemannian stability result of Kupferman-Maor-Shachar [Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal. {\bf 231} (2019), 367--408] for sequences of maps with $E_p(f_k) \to 0$ to an optimal quantitative estimate. The proof relies on the weak Riemannian Piola identity of Kupferman-Maor-Shachar, a uniform $C^{1,\alpha}$ approximation through the harmonic map heat flow, and a linearization argument which reduces the estimate to the well-known Riemannian version of Korn's inequality.

Stress-modulated growth in the presence of nutrients -- existence and uniqueness in one spatial dimension

Existence and uniqueness of solutions for a class of models for stress-modulated growth is proven in one spatial dimension. The model features the multiplicative decomposition of the deformation gradient $F$ into an elastic part $F_e$ and a growth-related part $G$. After the transformation due to the growth process, governed by $G$, an elastic deformation described by $F_e$ is applied in order to restore the Dirichlet boundary conditions and therefore the current configuration might be stressed with a stress tensor $S$. The growth of the material at each point in the reference configuration is given by an ordinary differential equation for which the right-hand side may depend on the stress $S$ and the pull-back of a nutrient concentration in the current configuration, leading to a coupled system of ordinary differential equations.

Analytical and numerical relaxation results for models in soil mechanics

A variational model of pressure-dependent plasticity employing a time-incremental setting is introduced. A novel formulation of the dissipation potential allows one to construct the condensed energy in a variationally consistent manner. For a one-dimensional model problem, an explicit expression for the quasiconvex envelope can be found which turns out to be essentially independent of the original pressure-dependent yield surface. The model problem can be extended to higher dimensions in an empirical manner. Numerical simulation exhibit well-posed behavior showing mesh-independent results.

Variational models for the interaction of surfactants with curvature -- existence and regularity of minimizers in the case of flexible curves

Existence and regularity of minimizers for a geometric variational problem is shown. The variational integral models an energy contribution of the interface between two immiscible fluids in the presence of surfactants and includes a Helfrich type contribution, a Frank type contribution and a coupling term between the orientation of the surfactants and the curvature of the interface. Analytical results are proven in a one--dimensional situation for curves.

On the theory of relaxation in nonlinear elasticity with constraints on the determinant

We consider vectorial variational problems in nonlinear elasticity of the form $I[u]=\int W(Du)dx$, where $W$ is continuous on matrices with positive determinant and diverges to infinity long sequences of matrices whose determinant is positive and tends to zero. We show that, under suitable growth assumptions, the functional $\int W^{qc}(Du)dx$ is an upper bound on the relaxation of $I$, and coincides with the relaxation if the quasiconvex envelope $W^{qc}$ of $W$ is polyconvex and has $p$-growth from below with $p\ge n$. This includes several physically relevant examples. We also show how a constraint of incompressibility can be incorporated in our results.

Relaxation of a model energy for the cubic to tetragonal phase transformation in two dimensions

We consider a two-dimensional problem in nonlinear elasticity which corresponds to the cubic-to-tetragonal phase transformation. Our model is frame invariant and the energy density is given by the squared distance from two potential wells. We obtain the quasiconvex envelope of the energy density and therefore the relaxation of the variational problem. Our result includes the constraint of positive determinant.

Strong solutions for the Beris-Edwards model for nematic liquid crystals with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions

Existence and uniqueness of local strong solution for the Beris--Edwards model for nematic liquid crystals, which couples the Navier-Stokes equations with an evolution equation for the Q-tensor, is established on a bounded domain in the case of homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions. The classical Beris--Edwards model is enriched by including a dependence of the fluid viscosity on the Q-tensor. The proof is based on a linearization of the system and Banach's fixed-point theorem.

Well-posedness of a fully-coupled Navier-Stokes/Q-tensor system with inhomogeneous boundary data

We prove short-time well-posedness and existence of global weak solutions of the Beris--Edwards model for nematic liquid crystals in the case of a bounded domain with inhomogeneous mixed Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions. The system consists of the Navier-Stokes equations coupled with an evolution equation for the $Q$-tensor. The solutions possess higher regularity in time of order one compared to the class of weak solutions with finite energy. This regularity is enough to obtain Lipschitz continuity of the non-linear terms in the corresponding function spaces. Therefore the well-posedness is shown with the aid of the contraction mapping principle using that the linearized system is an isomorphism between the associated function spaces.

Korn's second inequality and geometric rigidity with mixed growth conditions

Geometric rigidity states that a gradient field which is $L^p$-close to the set of proper rotations is necessarily $L^p$-close to a fixed rotation, and is one key estimate in nonlinear elasticity. In several applications, as for example in the theory of plasticity, energy densities with mixed growth appear. We show here that geometric rigidity holds also in $L^p+L^q$ and in $L^{p,q}$ interpolation spaces. As a first step we prove the corresponding linear inequality, which generalizes Korn's inequality to these spaces.

The div-curl lemma for sequences whose divergence and curl are compact in W^{-1,1}

It is shown that $u_k \cdot v_k$ converges weakly to $u\cdot v$ if $u_k\weakto u$ weakly in $L^p$ and $v_k\weakly v$ weakly in $L^q$ with $p, q\in (1,\infty)$, $1/p+1/q=1$, under the additional assumptions that the sequences $\Div u_k$ and $\curl v_k$ are compact in the dual space of $W^{1,\infty}_0$ and that $u_k\cdot v_k$ is equi-integrable. The main point is that we only require equi-integrability of the scalar product $u_k\cdot v_k$ and not of the individual sequences.
