Suppression of Self-Induced Flavor Conversion in the Supernova Accretion Phase

Self-induced flavor conversions of supernova (SN) neutrinos can strongly modify the flavor dependent fluxes. We perform a linearized flavor stability analysis with accretion-phase matter profiles of a 15 M_sun spherically symmetric model and corresponding neutrino fluxes. We use realistic energy and angle distributions, the latter deviating strongly from quasi-isotropic emission, thus accounting for both multi-angle and multi-energy effects. For our matter and neutrino density profile we always find stable conditions: flavor conversions are limited to the usual MSW effect. In this case one may distinguish the neutrino mass hierarchy in a SN neutrino signal if the mixing angle theta_13 is as large as suggested by recent experiments.

Impact of eV-mass sterile neutrinos on neutrino-driven supernova outflows

Motivated by recent hints for sterile neutrinos from the reactor anomaly, we study active-sterile conversions in a three-flavor scenario (2 active + 1 sterile families) for three different representative times during the neutrino-cooling evolution of the proto-neutron star born in an electron-capture supernova. In our "early model" (0.5 s post bounce), the nu_e-nu_s MSW effect driven by Delta m^2=2.35 eV^2 is dominated by ordinary matter and leads to a complete nu_e-nu_s swap with little or no trace of collective flavor oscillations. In our "intermediate" (2.9 s p.b.) and "late models" (6.5 s p.b.), neutrinos themselves significantly modify the nu_e-nu_s matter effect, and, in particular in the late model, nu-nu refraction strongly reduces the matter effect, largely suppressing the overall nu_e-nu_s MSW conversion. This phenomenon has not been reported in previous studies of active-sterile supernova neutrino oscillations. We always include the feedback effect on the electron fraction Y_e due to neutrino oscillations. In all examples, Y_e is reduced and therefore the presence of sterile neutrinos can affect the conditions for heavy-element formation in the supernova ejecta, even if probably not enabling the r-process in the investigated outflows of an electron-capture supernova. The impact of neutrino-neutrino refraction is strong but complicated, leaving open the possibility that with a more complete treatment, or for other supernova models, active-sterile neutrino oscillations could generate conditions suitable for the r-process.

Sterile neutrinos with eV masses in cosmology -- how disfavoured exactly?

We study cosmological models that contain sterile neutrinos with eV-range masses as suggested by reactor and short-baseline oscillation data. We confront these models with both precision cosmological data (probing the CMB decoupling epoch) and light-element abundances (probing the BBN epoch). In the minimal LambdaCDM model, such sterile neutrinos are strongly disfavoured by current data because they contribute too much hot dark matter. However, if the cosmological framework is extended to include also additional relativistic degrees of freedom -- beyond the three standard neutrinos and the putative sterile neutrinos, then the hot dark matter constraint on the sterile states is considerably relaxed. A further improvement is achieved by allowing a dark energy equation of state parameter w<-1. While BBN strongly disfavours extra radiation beyond the assumed eV-mass sterile neutrino, this constraint can be circumvented by a small nu_e degeneracy. Any model containing eV-mass sterile neutrinos implies also strong modifications of other cosmological parameters. Notably, the inferred cold dark matter density can shift up by 20 to 75% relative to the standard LambdaCDM value.

Supernova bound on keV-mass sterile neutrinos reexamined

Active-sterile neutrino mixing is strongly constrained for m_s > 100 keV to avoid excessive energy losses from supernova cores. For smaller m_s, matter effects suppress the effective mixing angle except for a resonant range of energies where it is enhanced. We study the case of ν_tau-ν_s-mixing where a ν_tau-\barν_tau asymmetry builds up due to the strong excess of ν_s over \barν_s emission or vice versa, reducing the overall emission rate. In the warm dark matter range m_s < 10 keV the mixing angle is essentially unconstrained.

Synchronization vs. decoherence of neutrino oscillations at intermediate densities

We study collective oscillations of a two-flavor neutrino system with arbitrary but fixed density. In the vacuum limit, modes with different energies quickly de-phase (kinematical decoherence), whereas in the limit of infinite density they lock to each other (synchronization). For intermediate densities, we find different classes of solutions. There is always a phase transition in the sense of partial synchronization occurring only above a density threshold. For small mixing angles, partial or complete decoherence can be induced by a parametric resonance, introducing a new time scale to the problem, the final outcome depending on the spectrum and mixing angle. We derive an analytic relation that allows us to calculate the late-time degree of coherence based on the spectrum alone.

Adiabatic Faraday effect in a two-level Hamiltonian formalism

The helicity of a photon traversing a magnetized plasma can flip when the B-field along the trajectory slowly reverses. Broderick and Blandford have recently shown that this intriguing effect can profoundly change the usual Faraday effect for radio waves. We study this phenomenon in a formalism analogous to neutrino flavor oscillations: the evolution is governed by a Schroedinger equation for a two-level system consisting of the two photon helicities. Our treatment allows for a transparent physical understanding of this system and its dynamics. In particular, it allows us to investigate the nature of transitions at intermediate adiabaticities.

Cosmology seeking friendship with sterile neutrinos

Precision cosmology and big-bang nucleosynthesis mildly favor extra radiation in the universe beyond photons and ordinary neutrinos, lending support to the existence of low-mass sterile neutrinos. We use the WMAP 7-year data, small-scale CMB observations from ACBAR, BICEP and QuAD, the SDSS 7th data release, and measurement of the Hubble parameter from HST observations to derive credible regions for the assumed common mass scale m_s and effective number N_s of thermally excited sterile neutrino states. Our results are compatible with the existence of one or perhaps two sterile neutrinos, as suggested by LSND and MiniBooNE, if m_s is in the sub-eV range.

Neutrino and axion hot dark matter bounds after WMAP-7

We update cosmological hot dark matter constraints on neutrinos and hadronic axions. Our most restrictive limits use 7-year data from the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe for the cosmic microwave background anisotropies, the halo power spectrum (HPS) from the 7th data release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, and the Hubble constant from Hubble Space Telescope observations. We find 95% C.L. upper limits of \sum m_ν<0.44 eV (no axions), m_a<0.91 eV (assuming \sum m_ν=0), and \sum m_ν<0.41 eV and m_a<0.72 eV for two hot dark matter components after marginalising over the respective other mass. CMB data alone yield \sum m_ν<1.19 eV (no axions), while for axions the HPS is crucial for deriving m_a constraints. This difference can be traced to the fact that for a given hot dark matter fraction axions are much more massive than neutrinos.

Triggering collective oscillations by three-flavor effects

Collective flavor transformations in supernovae, caused by neutrino-neutrino interactions, are essentially a two-flavor phenomenon driven by the atmospheric mass difference and the small mixing angle theta_13. In the two-flavor approximation, the initial evolution depends logarithmically on theta_13 and the system remains trapped in an unstable fixed point for theta_13 = 0. However, any effect breaking exact nu_mu-nu_tau equivalence triggers the conversion. Such three-flavor perturbations include radiative corrections to weak interactions, small differences between the nu_mu and nu_tau fluxes, or non-standard interactions. Therefore, extremely small values of theta_13 are in practice equivalent, the fate of the system depending only on the neutrino spectra and their mass ordering.

Cosmological axion bounds

We discuss current cosmological constraints on axions, as well as future sensitivities. Bounds on axion hot dark matter are discussed first, and subsequently we discuss both current and future sensitivity to models in which axions play the role as cold dark matter, but where the Peccei-Quinn symmetry is not restored during reheating.

Reconstructing the supernova bounce time with neutrinos in IceCube

Generic model predictions for the early neutrino signal of a core-collapse supernova (SN) imply that IceCube can reconstruct the bounce to within about +/- 3.5 ms at 95% CL (assumed SN distance 10 kpc), relevant for coincidence with gravitational-wave detectors. The timing uncertainty scales approximately with distance-squared. The offset between true and reconstructed bounce time of up to several ms depends on the neutrino flavor oscillation scenario. Our work extends the recent study of Pagliaroli et al. [PRL 103, 031102 (2009)] and demonstrates IceCube's superb timing capabilities for neutrinos from the next nearby SN.

Flavour-dependent radiative correction to neutrino-neutrino refraction

In the framework of the Standard Model we calculate the flavour non-universal correction for neutrino refraction in a neutrino background and verify a similar previous result for the case of ordinary-matter background. The dominant term arises at loop level and involves tau leptons circulating in the loop. These O(G_F m_tau^2) corrections to the tree-level potential provide the dominant refractive difference between nu_mu and nu_tau unless the medium contains mu or tau leptons. Our results affect the flavour evolution of dense neutrino gases and may be of interest for collective three-flavour oscillations of supernova neutrinos. We spell out explicitly how these non-universal neutrino-neutrino interactions enter the flavour oscillation equations.

Multiple Spectral Splits of Supernova Neutrinos

Collective oscillations of supernova neutrinos swap the electron neutrino and antineutrino spectra with those of another flavor in certain energy intervals bounded by sharp spectral splits. This phenomenon is far more general than previously appreciated: typically one finds one or more swaps and accompanying splits in the neutrino and antineutrino channels for both inverted and normal neutrino mass hierarchies. Depending on an instability condition, swaps develop around spectral crossings (energies where the electron neutrino or antineutrino fluxes are equal to that of another flavor, as well as infinite E where all fluxes vanish), and the widths of swaps are determined by the spectra and fluxes. Wash-out by multi-angle decoherence varies across the spectrum and splits can survive as sharp spectral features.

Collective flavor transitions of supernova neutrinos

We give a very brief overview of collective effects in neutrino oscillations in core collapse supernovae where refractive effects of neutrinos on themselves can considerably modify flavor oscillations, with possible repercussions for future supernova neutrino detection. We discuss synchronized and bipolar oscillations, the role of energy and angular neutrino modes, as well as three-flavor effects. We close with a short summary and some open questions.

Self-induced parametric resonance in collective neutrino oscillations

We identify a generic new form of collective flavor oscillations in dense neutrino gases that amounts to a self-induced parametric resonance. It occurs in a homogeneous and isotropic ensemble when a range of neutrino modes is prepared in a different flavor than the neighboring modes with lower and higher energies. The flavor content of the intermediate spectral part librates relative to the other parts with a frequency corresponding to a typical Delta m^2/2E. This libration persists in the limit of an arbitrarily large neutrino density where one would have expected synchronized flavor oscillations.

Are cosmological neutrinos free-streaming?

Precision data from cosmology suggest neutrinos stream freely and hence interact very weakly around the epoch of recombination. We study this issue in a simple framework where neutrinos recouple instantaneously and stop streaming freely at a redshift z_i. The latest cosmological data imply z_i < 1500, the exact constraint depending somewhat on the assumed prior on z_i. This bound translates into a limit on the coupling strength between neutrinos and majoron-like particles phi, implying tau > 1 x 10^10 s (m_2/50 meV)^3 for the decay nu_2 -> nu_1+phi.

Collective neutrino oscillations in non-spherical geometry

The rich phenomenology of collective neutrino oscillations has been studied only in one-dimensional or spherically symmetric systems. Motivated by the non-spherical example of coalescing neutron stars, presumably the central engines of short gamma-ray bursts, we use the Liouville equation to formulate the problem for general source geometries. Assuming the neutrino ensemble displays self-maintained coherence, the problem once more becomes effectively one-dimensional along the streamlines of the overall neutrino flux. This approach for the first time provides a formal definition of the ``single-angle approximation'' frequently used for supernova neutrinos and allows for a natural generalization to non-spherical geometries. We study the explicit example of a disk-shaped source as a proxy for coalescing neutron stars.
