Identifying Earth matter effects on supernova neutrinos at a single detector

The neutrino oscillations in Earth matter introduce modulations in the supernova neutrino spectra. These modulations can be exploited to identify the presence of Earth effects on the spectra, which would enable us to put a limit on the value of the neutrino mixing angle $θ_{13}$ and to identify whether the mass hierarchy is normal or inverted. We demonstrate how the Earth effects can be identified at a single detector without prior assumptions about the flavor-dependent source spectra, using the Fourier transform of the ``inverse-energy'' spectrum of the signal. We explore the factors affecting the efficiency of this method, and find that the energy resolution of the detector is the most crucial one. In particular, whereas water Cherenkov detectors may need a few ten thousand events to identify the Earth effects, a few thousand may be enough at scintillation detectors, which generically have a much better energy resolution. A successful identification of the Earth effects through this method can also provide $Δm^2_\odot$ to a good accuracy. The relative strength of the detected Earth effects as a function of time provides a test for supernova models.

Monte Carlo Study of Supernova Neutrino Spectra Formation

The neutrino flux and spectra formation in a supernova core is studied by using a Monte Carlo code. The dominant opacity contribution for nu_mu and nu_tau is elastic scattering on nucleons. In addition we switch on or off a variety of processes which allow for the exchange of energy or the creation and destruction of neutrino pairs, notably nucleon bremsstrahlung, the e^+ e^- pair annihilation process and nu_e-bar nu_e -> nu_{mu,tau} nu_{mu,tau}-bar, recoil and weak magnetism in elastic nucleon scattering, elastic scattering on electrons and positrons and elastic scattering on electron neutrinos and anti-neutrinos. The least important processes are neutrino-neutrino scattering and e^+ e^- annihilation. The formation of the spectra and fluxes of nu_mu is dominated by the nucleonic processes, i.e. bremsstrahlung and elastic scattering with recoil, but also nu_e nu_e-bar annihilation and nu_mu e^\pm scattering contribute significantly. When all processes are included, the spectral shape of the emitted neutrino flux is always ``pinched,'' i.e. the width of the spectrum is smaller than that of a thermal spectrum with the same average energy. In all of our cases we find that the average nu_mu-bar energy exceeds the average nu_e-bar energy by only a small amount, 10% being a typical number. Weak magnetism effects cause the opacity of nu_mu to differ slightly from that of nu_mu-bar, translating into differences of the luminosities and average energies of a few percent. Depending on the density, temperature, and composition profile, the flavor-dependent luminosities L_{nu_e}$, L_{nu_e-bar}, and L_{nu_mu} can mutually differ from each other by up to a factor of two in either direction.

Electron Neutrino Pair Annihilation: A New Source for Muon and Tau Neutrinos in Supernovae

We show that in a supernova core the annihilation process nu_e nu_e-bar -> nu_{mu,tau} nu_{mu,tau}-bar is always more important than the traditional reaction e^+ e^- -> nu_{mu,tau} nu_{mu,tau}-bar as a source for muon and tau neutrino pairs. We study the impact of the new process by means of a Monte Carlo transport code with a static stellar background model and by means of a self-consistent hydrodynamical simulation with Boltzmann neutrino transport. Nucleon bremsstrahlung NN -> NN nu_{mu,tau} nu_{mu,tau}-bar is also included as another important source term. Taking into account nu_e nu_e-bar -> nu_{mu,tau} nu_{mu,tau}-bar increases the nu_mu and nu_tau luminosities by as much as 20% while the spectra remain almost unaffected. In our hydrodynamical simulation the shock was somewhat weakened. Elastic nu_{mu,tau} nu_e and nu_{mu,tau} nu_e scattering is not negligible but less important than nu_{mu,tau} e^+ or e^- scattering. Its influence on the nu_{mu,tau} fluxes and spectra is small after all other processes have been included.

Stringent neutron-star limits on large extra dimensions

Supernovae (SNe) are copious sources for Kaluza-Klein gravitons which are generic for theories with large extra dimensions. These massive particles are produced with average velocities ~0.5 c so that many of them are gravitationally retained by the SN core. Every neutron star thus has a halo of KK gravitons which decay into nu bar-nu, e^+e^- and gamma gamma on time scales \~10^9 years. The EGRET gamma-flux limits (E_gamma ~ 100 MeV) for nearby neutron stars constrain the fundamental scale for n=2 extra dimensions to M >500 TeV, and M>30 TeV for n=3. The upcoming GLAST satellite is a factor ~30 more sensitive and thus may detect KK decays, for example at the nearby neutron star RX J185635--3754. The requirement that neutron stars are not excessively heated by KK decays implies M>1700 TeV for n=2, and M>60 TeV for n=3.

Astrophysical axion bounds: An update

The observed properties of stars and especially the neutrino signal of the supernova 1987A provide an upper limit to the axion mass, while the age and expansion rate of the universe provide a lower limit. There remains a "window of opportunity" 10^{-5} eV < m_a < 10^{-2} eV, with large uncertainties on either side, where axions could still exist and where they would provide a significant fraction or all of the cosmic dark matter. The current status of this axion window is reviewed.

Comment on "Cherenkov Radiation by Neutrinos in a Supernova Core"

Mohanty and Samal have shown that the magnetic-moment interaction with nucleons contributes significantly to the photon dispersion relation in a supernova core, and with an opposite sign relative to the usual plasma effect. Because of a numerical error they overestimated the magnetic-moment term by two orders of magnitude, but it is still of the same order as the plasma effect. It appears that the Cherenkov processes gamma+nu -> nu and nu -> nu+gamma remain forbidden, but a final verdict depends on a more detailed investigation of the dynamical magnetic susceptibility of a hot nuclear medium.

Neutrino Masses in Astrophysics and Cosmology

Astrophysical and cosmological arguments and observations give us the most restrictive constraints on neutrino masses, electromagnetic couplings, and other properties. Conversely, massive neutrinos would contribute to the cosmic dark-matter density and would play an important role for the formation of structure in the universe. Neutrino oscillations may well solve the solar neutrino problem, and can have a significant impact on supernova physics.

Cherenkov radiation by massless neutrinos in a magnetic field

We calculate the Cherenkov process nu -> nu+photon in the presence of a homogeneous magnetic field. The neutrinos are taken to be massless with only standard-model couplings. The magnetic field fulfills the dual purpose of inducing an effective neutrino-photon vertex and of modifying the photon dispersion relation such that the Cherenkov condition is fulfilled. Our effect is closely related to photon splitting that occurs in magnetic fields and that may be astrophysically important in the strong magnetic fields of pulsars. It is also closely related to magnetic-field enhanced radiative decays nu -> nu'+photon that have been extensively discussed in the recent literature. In the appropriate limits we agree with these results, but we disagree with earlier explicit calculations of the Cherenkov process. For a field strength B_crit = m_e^2/e = 4.41E13 Gauss and for E=2m_e the Cherenkov rate is about 6E-11/sec and thus too small to be of practical importance for pulsar physics.

Supernova Neutrino Opacities

In a supernova (SN) core during infall and after collapse, neutrinos are trapped by their interactions with nucleons. For the axial-vector current interactions it is not enough to include static particle-particle correlations. Even the single-nucleon spin autocorrelation reduces the scattering cross section dramatically. Therefore, the dynamical structure of the spin-density structure function has an important impact on neutrino transport in supernovae. At the present time, SN neutrino opacities cannot be calculated to a controlled degree of precision.

The Nature of Dark Matter

The dynamics of the universe may be dominated by novel weakly interacting elementary particles, by baryons in an invisible form, by black holes, and globally by vacuum energy. The main arguments for and against such hypotheses are reviewed.

Pulsar Bound on the Photon Electric Charge Reexamined

If photons had a small electric charge $Q_γ$ their path in the galactic magnetic field would be curved, leading to a time delay between photons of different frequency from a distant source. Cocconi's previous application of this argument led to a limit which is too restrictive by a factor of about 200; the corrected bound is $Q_γ/e\lapprox10^{-29}$.
