Quantum Criticality in the Ferromagnetic Superconductor UCoGe under Pressure and Magnetic Field

The pressure-temperature phase diagram of the orthorhombic ferromagnetic superconductor UCoGe was determined by resistivity measurements up to $10.5~$GPa. The Curie temperature $T_C$ is suppressed with pressure and vanishes at the critical pressure $p_c\approx1~$GPa. Superconductivity is observed in both the ferromagnetic state at low pressure, and in the paramagnetic state above $p_c$ up to about 4$~$GPa. Non-Fermi liquid behavior appears in a large pressure range. The resistivity varies linearly with temperature around $p_c$ and evolves continuously with pressure to a $T^2$ Fermi-liquid behavior for $p \gtrapprox 5$~GPa. The residual resistivity as a function of pressure shows a maximum far above $p_c$ at $p^\star=7.2~$GPa and the amplitude of the inelastic scattering term of the resistivity decreases by more than one order in magnitude at $p^\star$, which appears to mark the entrance into a weakly correlated regime. The pressure dependence of the upper critical field for magnetic field applied along the $b$ and $c$ axis illustrates the drastic difference in the field dependence of the ferromagnetic superconducting pairing. While for $H\parallel b$ axis $H_{c2}(T)$ is driven by the suppression of the ferromagnetic order, it is dominated by the strong initial suppression of the ferromagnetic fluctuations for a field applied in the easy magnetization axis $c$.

Collapse of ferromagnetism and Fermi surface instability near reentrant superconductivity of URhGe

We present thermoelectric power and resistivity measurements in the ferromagnetic superconductor URhGe for magnetic field applied along the hard magnetization b axis of the orthorhombic crystal. Reentrant superconductivity is observed near the the spin reorientation transition at $H_{R}$=12.75 T, where a first order transition from the ferromagnetic to the polarized paramagnetic state occurs. Special focus is given to the longitudinal configuration, where both electric and heat current are parallel to the applied field. The validity of the Fermi-liquid $T^2$ dependence of the resistivity through $H_R$ demonstrates clearly that no quantum critical point occurs at $H_R$. Thus the ferromagnetic transition line at $H_R$ becomes first order implying the existence of a tricritical point at finite temperature. The enhancement of magnetic fluctuations in the vicinity of the tricritical point stimulates the reentrance of superconductivity. The abrupt sign change observed in the thermoelectric power with the thermal gradient applied along the b axis together with the strong anomalies in the other directions is a definitive macroscopic evidence that in addition a significant change of the Fermi surface appears through $H_R$.

Fermi Surface Instabilities in Ferromagnetic Superconductor URhGe

The field-reentrant (field-reinforced) superconductivity on ferromagnetic superconductors is one of the most interesting topics in unconventional superconductivity. The enhancement of effective mass and the induced ferromagnetic fluctuations play key roles for reentrant superconductivity. However, the associated change of the Fermi surface, which is often observed at (pseudo-) metamagnetic transition, can also be a key ingredient. In order to study the Fermi surface instability, we performed Hall effect measurements in the ferromagnetic superconductor URhGe. The Hall effect of URhGe is well explained by two contributions, namely by the normal Hall effect and by the large anomalous Hall effect due to skew scattering. The large change in the Hall coefficient is observed at low fields between the paramagnetic and ferromagnetic states for H // c-axis (easy-magnetization axis) in the orthorhombic structure, indicating that the Fermi surface is reconstructed in the ferromagnetic state below the Curie temperature (T_Curie=9.5K). At low temperatures (T << T_Curie), when the field is applied along the b-axis, the reentrant superconductivity was observed in both the Hall resistivity and the magnetoresistance below 0.4K. Above 0.4K, a large jump with the first-order nature was detected in the Hall resistivity at a spin-reorientation field H_R ~ 12.5T, demonstrating that the marked change of the Fermi surface occurs between the ferromagnetic state and the polarized state above H_R. The results can be understood by the Lifshitz-type transition, induced by the magnetic field or by the change of the effective magnetic field.

Lifshitz Transition and Metamagnetism: Thermoelectric Studies of CeRu$_2$Si$_2$

We report field and temperature dependent measurements of the thermoelectric power (TEP) across the pseudo-metamagnetic transition (MMT) in CeRu$_2$Si$_2$. We applied the thermoelectric gradient parallel and perpendicular to the field along the c axis of the tetragonal crystal which is the easy magnetization axis. At the MMT at H$_m$=7.8 T, a strong anomaly in the TEP is observed for both configurations with opposite signs. The anomaly at Hm becomes a cascade of anomalies at very low temperature which seems to be a generic feature of the TEP at a change in the topology of the Fermi surface (FS) in heavy Fermion multiband systems. Simultaneously, quantum oscillations in the magnetic field dependence of the TEP are observed for both configurations below and above the MMT.

Ferromagnetic Quantum Criticality Studied by Hall Effect Measurements in UCoAl

Hall effect measurements were performed under pressure and magnetic field up to 2.2 GPa and 16 T on a single crystal of UCoAl. At ambient pressure, the system undergoes a first order metamagnetic transition at the critical field B_m = 0.7 T from a paramagnetic ground state to a field-induced ferromagnetic state. The Hall signal is linear at low field and shows a step-like anomaly at the transition, with only little change of the Hall coefficient. The anomaly is sharpest at the temperature of the critical end point T_0 = 12 K above which the first order metamagnetic transition becomes a crossover. Under pressure B_m increases and T_0 decreases. The step-like anomaly in the Hall effect disappears at P_M ~= 1.3 GPa and the metamagnetic transition is not detected above the quantum critical end point (QCEP) at P_Delta ~= 1.7 GPa, B_m ~= 7 T. Using magnetization data, we analyse our Hall resistivity data at ambient pressure in order to quantitatively account for both ordinary and anomalous contributions to the Hall effect. Under pressure, a drastic change in the field dependence of the Hall coefficient is found on crossing the QCEP. A possible Fermi surface change at B_m remains an open question.

Magnetic Field Driven Electronic Singularities through Metamagnetic Phenomena: Case of the Heavy Fermion Antiferromagnet Ce(Ru0.92Rh0.08)2Si2

Thermoelectric power measurements on the heavy fermion antiferromagnet Ce(Ru0.92Rh0.08)2Si2 under magnetic field (H) show clearly that the antiferromagnetic state below the critical field Hc ~ 2.8T can be fully decoupled from the pseudo-metamagnetic crossover at Hm ~ 5.8T which occurs when the magnetization reaches a critical value. By contrast to the weak field variation of the Sommerfeld coefficient of the specific heat in the field window from Hc to Hm, two electronic singularities with opposite signs are detected in the thermoelectric power. The interplay between the magnetic instability and the topological change of the Fermi surface is discussed and we argue similarities to other field instabilities in various heavy fermion compounds.

Fermi Surface Reconstruction inside the Hidden Order Phase of URu2Si2 Probed by Thermoelectric Measurements

We report thermoelectric measurements of the low carrier heavy fermion compound URu2Si2 at high fields up to 34T and at low temperatures down to 500mK. The field dependence of the thermoelectric power (TEP) and the Nernst signal shows successive anomalies deep inside the hidden order (HO) phase. The field position of these anomalies correspond to different changes in the Shubnikov-de Haas frequencies and effective masses around 12 T, 17 T, 23 T and 30 T. These results indicate successive reconstructions of the Fermi surface, which imply electronic phase transitions well within the HO phase.

High-Field Fermi Surface Properties in the Low Carrier Heavy Fermion Compound URu2Si2

We performed the Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) experiments of the low carrier heavy fermion compound URu2Si2 at high fields up to 34T and at low temperatures down to 30mK. All main SdH branches named alpha, beta and gamma were observed for all the measured field-directions (H // [001] -> [100], [100] -> [110] and [001] -> [110]), indicating that these are attributed to the closed Fermi surfaces with nearly spherical shapes. Anomalous split of branch alpha was detected for the field along the basal plane, and the split immediately disappears by tilting the field to [001] direction, implying a fingerprint of the hidden order state. High field experiments reveal the complicated field-dependence of the SdH frequencies and the cyclotron masses due to the Zeeman spin-splitting associated with the Fermi surface reconstruction in the hidden order state with small carrier numbers. A new SdH branch named omega with large cyclotron mass of 25m0 was detected at high fields above 23T close to the hidden order instabilities.

Field-induced Phenomena in Ferromagnetic Superconductors UCoGe and URhGe

We review our recent studies on ferromagnetic superconductors, UGe2, URhGe and UCoGe, where the spin-triplet state with the so-called equal spin pairing is realized. We focus on experimental results of URhGe and UCoGe in which the superconductivity occurs already at ambient pressure. The huge upper critical field Hc2 on UCoGe for the field along the hard magnetization axis (b-axis) is confirmed by the AC susceptibility measurements by the fine tuning of field angle. Contrary to the huge Hc2 along the hard-magnetization axis, Hc2 along the easy-magnetization axis (c-axis) is relatively small in value. However, the initial slope of Hc2, namely dHc2/dT (H -> 0) both in UCoGe and in URhGe indicates the large value, which can be explained by the magnetic domain effect detected in the magnetization measurements. The specific heat measurements using a high quality single crystal of UCoGe demonstrate the bulk superconductivity, which is extended under magnetic field for the field along c-axis.

Thermoelectricity of the Ferromagnetic Superconductor UCoGe

UCoGe exhibits superconductivity in the presence of ferromagnetism. When a field is applied along the b axis (perpendicular to the easy axis), ferromagnetism is weakened and superconductivity is enhanced. This enhancement has been attributed to an increase in coupling as observed in the enhanced effective mass produced by the critical fluctuations as the ferromagnetic transition is strongly suppressed. However it is also important to know if and how the Fermi surface changes near the critical point. Here we report measurements of the thermoelectricity of UCoGe which reveal a low carrier density metal. Under magnetic field applied along the b axis, a sharp peak is observed in the thermopower of UCoGe at H*=11.1T and low temperature which becomes broader at higher temperatures. At higher field, the thermopower changes sign which suggests a modification of the Fermi Surface. We analyze these results using a topological change in Fermi surface and show that this can explain both the thermopower and the enhanced superconductivity.

Upper critical field of CeCoIn5

We present a detailed analysis of the upper critical field for CeCoIn5 under high pressure. We show that, consistently with other measurements, this system shows a decoupling between maximum of the superconducting transition temperature Tc and maximum pairing strength. This puts forward CeCoIn5 as an important paradigm for this class of unconventional, strongly correlated superconductors.

Details of Sample Dependence and Transport Properties of URu2Si2

Resistivity and specific heat measurements were performed in the low carrier unconventional superconductor URu2Si2 on various samples with very different qualities. The superconducting transition temperature (TSC) and the hidden order transition temperature (THO) of these crystals were evaluated as a function of the residual resistivity ratio (RRR). In high quality single crystals the resistivity does not seem to follow a T2 dependence above TSC, indicating that the Fermi liquid regime is restricted to low temperatures. However, an analysis of the isothermal longitudinal magnetoresistivity points out that the T2 dependence may be "spoiled" by residual inhomogeneous superconducting contribution. We discuss a possible scenario concerning the distribution of TSC related with the fact that the hidden order phase is very sensitive to the pressure inhomogeneity.

Ferromagnetic Quantum Critical Endpoint in UCoAl

Resistivity and magnetostriction measurements were performed at high magnetic fields and under pressure on UCoAl. At ambient pressure, the 1st order metamagnetic transition at H_m ~ 0.7 T from the paramagnetic ground state to the field-induced ferromagnetic state changes to a crossover at finite temperature T_0 ~11 K. With increasing pressure, H_m linearly increases, while T_0 decreases and is suppressed at the quantum critical endpoint (QCEP, P_QCEP ~ 1.5 GPa, H_m ~ 7 T). At higher pressure, the value of H_m identified as a crossover continuously increases, while a new anomaly appears above P_QCEP at higher field H* in resistivity measurements. The field dependence of the effective mass (m*) obtained by resistivity and specific heat measurements exhibits a step-like drop at H_m at ambient pressure. With increasing pressure, it gradually changes into a peak structure and a sharp enhancement of m* is observed near the QCEP. Above P_QCEP, the enhancement of m* is reduced, and a broad plateau is found between H_m and H*. We compare our results on UCoAl with those of the ferromagnetic superconductor UGe2 and the itinerant metamagnetic ruthenate Sr3Ru2O7.

Evolution toward Quantum Critical End Point in UGe_2

We report on Hall resistivity and electrical resistivity measurements under pressure and magnetic field in UGe_2 with ferromagnetic (FM) tricriticality. The Hall resistivity sensitively detects the first order metamagnetic transition from a paramagnetic (PM) phase to a FM phase in a large pressure range almost up to the quantum critical end point (QCEP). The drastic change in the Fermi surface at the PM-FM transition is detected up to the vicinity of the QCEP, while a strong modification in the field variation of the inelastic scattering between electrons is observed toward the QCEP. The comparison with the theoretical predictions is made.

Antiferromagnetism and Superconductivity in Cerium based Heavy Fermion Compounds

The study of competing ground states is a central issue in condensed matter physic. In this article we will discuss the interplay of antiferromagnetic order and unconventional superconductivity in Ce based heavy-fermion compounds. In all discussed examples superconductivity appears at the border of magnetic order. Special focus is given on the pressure-temperature-magnetic field phase diagram of CeRhIn5 and CeCoIn5 which allows to discuss microscopic coexistence of magnetic order and superconductivity in detail. A striking point is the similarity of the phase diagram of different classes of strongly correlated systems which is discussed briefly. The recently discovered non-centrosymmetric superconductors will open a new access with the possible mixing of odd and even parity pairing.

Antiferromagnetism and Superconductivity in CeRhIn$_5$

We discuss recent results on the heavy fermion superconductor CeRhIn$_5$ which presents ideal conditions to study the strong coupling between the suppression of antiferromagnetic order and the appearance of unconventional superconductivity. The appearance of superconductivity as function of pressure is strongly connected to the suppression of the magnetic order. Under magnetic field, the re-entrance of magnetic order inside the superconducting state shows that antiferromagnetism nucleates in the vortex cores. The suppression of antiferromagnetism in CeRhIn$_5$ by Sn doping is compared to that under hydrostatic pressure.

Pressure Evolution of the Magnetic Field induced Ferromagnetic Fluctuation through the Pseudo-Metamagnetism of CeRu2Si2

Resistivity measurements performed under pressure in the paramagnetic ground state of CeRu2Si2 are reported. They demonstrate that the relative change of effective mass through the pseudo metamagnetic transition is invariant under pressure. The results are compared with the first order metamagnetic transition due to the antiferromagnetism of Ce0.9La0.1Ru2Si2 which corresponds to the "negative" pressure of CeRu2Si2 by volume expansion. Finally, we describe the link between the spin-depairing of quasiparticles on CeRu2Si2 and that of Cooper pairs on the unconventional heavy fermion superconductor CeCoIn5.

Interplay of Superconductivity, Antiferromagnetism, and Pauli Depairing in CeCoIn$_5$

Low temperature magnetization M measurements down to 70~mK have been performed through the superconducting upper critical field H_c2 of CeCoIn5 with the field H parallel to the c axis of the tetragonal crystal. The crossing through the upper critical field H_c2(0) is marked by a sign change in the temperature dependence of M(T). A Fermi liquid law of the magnetization is observed in the superconducting phase while in the paramagnetic state above H_c2 a quasi-linear temperature dependence is obeyed. The specific heat below H_c2 is therefor dominated by the increase of γ(H), the linear term of the specific heat, and is marked by a singularity at H_{c2} (0). No indication of the so called Q-phase was observed below H_c2 (in contrast to the case with H applied in the basal plane).
