Partial Clustering in Binary Two-Dimensional Colloidal Suspensions

Strongly interacting binary mixtures of superparamagnetic colloidal particles confined to a two-dimensional water-air interface are examined by theory, computer simulation and experiment. The mixture exhibits a partial clustering in equilibrium: in the voids of the matrix of unclustered big particles, the small particles form subclusters with a sponge-like topology which is accompanied by a characteristic small-wave vector peak in the small-small structure factor. This partial clustering is a general phenomenon occurring for strongly coupled negatively non-additive mixtures.

Observation of the critical regime near Anderson localization of light

Diffusive transport is among the most common phenomena in nature [1]. However, as predicted by Anderson [2], diffusion may break down due to interference. This transition from diffusive transport to localization of waves should occur for any type of classical or quantum wave in any media as long as the wavelength becomes comparable to the transport mean free path $\ell^*$ [3]. The signatures of localization and those of absorption, or bound states, can however be similar, such that an unequivocal proof of the existence of wave localization in disordered bulk materials is still lacking. Here we present measurements of time resolved non-classical diffusion of visible light in strongly scattering samples, which cannot be explained by absorption, sample geometry or reduction in transport velocity. Deviations from classical diffusion increase strongly with decreasing $\ell^*$ as expected for a phase transition. This constitutes an experimental realization of the critical regime in the approach to Anderson localization.

Three-Particle Correlations in Simple Liquids

We use video microscopy to follow the phase-space trajectory of a two-dimensional colloidal model liquid and calculate three-point correlation functions from the measured particle configurations. Approaching the fluid-solid transition by increasing the strength of the pair-interaction potential, one observes the gradual formation of a crystal-like local order due to triplet correlations, while being still deep inside the fluid phase. Furthermore, we show that in a strongly interacting system the Born-Green equation can be satisfied only with the full triplet correlation function but not with three-body distribution functions obtained from superposing pair-correlations (Kirkwood superposition approximation).
