The quantitative hydrodynamic limit of the Kawasaki dynamics

We derive for the first time in the literature a rate of convergence in the hydrodynamic limit of the Kawasaki dynamics for a one-dimensional lattice system. We use an adaptation of the two-scale approach. The main difference to the original two-scale approach is that the observables on the mesoscopic level are described by a projection onto splines of second order, and not by a projection onto piecewise constant functions. This allows us to use a more natural definition of the mesoscopic dynamics, which yields a better rate of convergence than the original two-scale approach.

Toward a quantitative theory of the hydrodynamic limit

This article provides non-trivial technical ingredients for the article "The quantitative hydrodynamic limit of the Kawasaki dynamics" by the same authors. In that work a quantitative version of the hydrodynamic limit is deduced using a refinement of the two-scale approach. In this work, we deduce the strict convexity of the coarse-grained Hamiltonian, a uniform logarithmic Sobolev inequality for the canonical ensemble and the convergence of the coarse-grained Hamiltonian to the macroscopic free energy of the system. We deduce those results following an approach developed by Grunewald, Otto, Villani and Westdickenberg. Because in our setting the associated coarse-graining operator is non-local, the arguments are much more subtle and need additional ingredients like the Brascamp-Lieb inequality and a multivariate local central-limit theorem.

Strict convexity of the free energy of the canonical ensemble under decay of correlations

We consider a one-dimensional lattice system of unbounded, real-valued spins. We allow arbitrary strong, attractive, nearest-neighbor interaction. We show that the free energy of the canonical ensemble converges uniformly in $C^2$ to the free energy of the grand canonical ensembles. The error estimates are quantitative. A direct consequence is that the free energy of the canonical ensemble is uniformly strictly convex for large systems. Another consequence is a quantitative local Cramér theorem which yields the strict convexity of the coarse-grained Hamiltonian. With small adaptations, the argument could be generalized to systems with finite-range interactions on a graph, as long as the degree of the graph is uniformly bounded and the associated grand canonical ensemble has uniform decay of correlations.

A robust quantitative local central limit theorem with applications to enumerative combinatorics and random combinatorial structures

A useful heuristic in the understanding of large random combinatorial structures is the Arratia-Tavare principle, which describes an approximation to the joint distribution of component-sizes using independent random variables. The principle outlines conditions under which the total variation distance between the true joint distribution and the approximation should be small, and was successfully exploited by Pittel in the cases of integer partitions and set partitions. We provide sufficient conditions for this principle to be true in a general context, valid for certain discrete probability distributions which are $\textit{perturbed log-concave}$, via a quantitative local central limit theorem. We then use it to generalize some classical asymptotic statistics in combinatorial theory, as well as assert some new ones.

Equivalence of a mixing condition and the LSI in spin systems with infinite range interaction

We investigate unbounded continuous spin-systems with infinite-range interactions. We develop a new technique for deducing decay of correlations from a uniform Poincaré inequality based on a directional Poincaré inequality, which we derive through an averaging procedure. We show that this decay of correlations is equivalent to the Dobrushin-Shlosman mixing condition. With this, we also state and provide a partial answer to a conjecture regarding the relationship between the relaxation rates of non-ferromagnetic and ferromagnetic systems. Finally, we show that for a symmetric, ferromagnetic system with zero boundary conditions, a weaker decay of correlations can be bootstrapped.

Ricci curvature bounds for weakly interacting Markov chains

We establish a general perturbative method to prove entropic Ricci curvature bounds for interacting stochastic particle systems. We apply this method to obtain curvature bounds in several examples, namely: Glauber dynamics for a class of spin systems including the Ising and Curie--Weiss models, a class of hard-core models and random walks on groups induced by a conjugacy invariant set of generators.

Approximate tensorization of entropy at high temperature

We show that for weakly dependent random variables the relative entropy functional satisfies an approximate version of the standard tensorization property which holds in the independent case. As a corollary we obtain a family of dimensionless logarithmic Sobolev inequalities. In the context of spin systems on a graph, the weak dependence requirements resemble the well known Dobrushin uniqueness conditions. Our results can be considered as a discrete counterpart of a recent work of Katalin Marton. We also discuss some natural generalizations such as approximate Shearer estimates and subadditivity of entropy.

Poincaré and logarithmic Sobolev inequalities by decomposition of the energy landscape

We consider a diffusion on a potential landscape which is given by a smooth Hamiltonian $H:\mathbb {R}^n\to \mathbb {R}$ in the regime of low temperature $\varepsilon$. We proof the Eyring-Kramers formula for the optimal constant in the Poincaré (PI) and logarithmic Sobolev inequality (LSI) for the associated generator $L=\varepsilon Δ-\nabla H\cdot\nabla$ of the diffusion. The proof is based on a refinement of the two-scale approach introduced by Grunewald et al. [Ann. Inst. Henri Poincaré Probab. Stat. 45 (2009) 302-351] and of the mean-difference estimate introduced by Chafaï and Malrieu [Ann. Inst. Henri Poincaré Probab. Stat. 46 (2010) 72-96]. The Eyring-Kramers formula follows as a simple corollary from two main ingredients: The first one shows that the PI and LSI constant of the diffusion restricted to metastable regions corresponding to the local minima scales well in $\varepsilon$. This mimics the fast convergence of the diffusion to metastable states. The second ingredient is the estimation of a mean-difference by a weighted transport distance. It contains the main contribution to the PI and LSI constant, resulting from exponentially long waiting times of jumps between metastable states of the diffusion.

Hydrodynamic limit for conservative spin systems with super-quadratic, partially inhomogeneous single-site potential

We consider an interacting unbounded spin system, with conservation of the mean spin. We derive quantitative rates of convergence to the hydrodynamic limit provided the single-site potential is a bounded perturbation of a strictly convex function with polynomial growth, and with an additional random inhomogeneous linear term. This additional linear term models the impact of a random chemical potential. The argument adapts the two-scale approach of Grunewald, Otto, Villani and Westdickenberg from the quadratic to the general case. The main ingredient is the derivation of a covariance estimate that is uniform in the system size. We also show that this covariance estimate can be used to change the iterative argument of [MO] for deducing the optimal scaling LSI for the canonical ensemble into a two-scale argument in the sense of [GOVW]. We also prove the LSI for canonical ensembles with an inhomogeneous linear term.

The approach of Otto-Reznikoff revisited

In this article we consider a lattice system of unbounded continuos spins. Otto & Reznikoff used the two-scale approach to show that exponential decay of correlations yields a logarithmic Sobolev inequality (LSI) with uniform constant in the system size. We improve their statement by weakening the assumptions. For the proof a more detailed analysis based on two new ingredients is needed. The two new ingredients are a new basic covariance estimate and a uniform moment estimate. We additionally provide a comparison principle for covariances showing that the correlations for the conditioned Gibbs measures are controlled by the correlations of the original Gibbs measure with ferromagnetic interaction. The latter simplifies the application of the main result. As an application, we show how decay of correlations combined with the uniform LSI yields the uniqueness of the infinite-volume Gibbs measure, generalizing a result of Yoshida form finite-range to infinite-range interaction.

A Brascamp-Lieb type covariance estimate

In this article, we derive a new covariance estimate. The estimate has a similar structure as the Brascamp-Lieb inequality and is optimal for ferromagnetic Gaussian measures. It can be naturally applied to deduce decay of correlations of lattice systems of continuous spins. We also discuss the relation of the new estimate with known estimates like a weighted estimate due to Helffer & Ledoux. The main ingredient of the proof of the new estimate is a directional Poincaré inequality which seems to be unknown.

Decay of correlations in 1D lattice systems of continuous spins and long-range interaction

We consider an one-dimensional lattice system of unbounded and continuous spins. The Hamiltonian consists of a perturbed strictly-convex single-site potential and with longe-range interaction. We show that if the interactions decay algebraically of order 2+a, a>0 then the correlations also decay algebraically of order 2+ã for some ã > 0. For the argument we generalize a method from Zegarlinski from finite-range to infinite-range interaction to get a preliminary decay of correlations, which is improved to the correct order by a recursive scheme based on Lebowitz inequalities. Because the decay of correlations yields the uniqueness of the Gibbs measure, the main result of this article yields that the on-phase region of a continuous spin system is at least as large as for the Ising model.

Uniform logarithmic Sobolev inequalities for conservative spin systems with super-quadratic single-site potential

We consider a noninteracting unbounded spin system with conservation of the mean spin. We derive a uniform logarithmic Sobolev inequality (LSI) provided the single-site potential is a bounded perturbation of a strictly convex function. The scaling of the LSI constant is optimal in the system size. The argument adapts the two-scale approach of Grunewald, Villani, Westdickenberg and the second author from the quadratic to the general case. Using an asymmetric Brascamp-Lieb-type inequality for covariances, we reduce the task of deriving a uniform LSI to the convexification of the coarse-grained Hamiltonian, which follows from a general local Cramér theorem.
