Hilbert schemes of K3 surfaces, generalized Kummer, and cobordism classes of hyper-Kähler manifolds

We prove that the complex cobordism class of any hyper-Kähler manifold of dimension $2n$ is a unique combination with rational coefficients of classes of products of punctual Hilbert schemes of $K3$ surfaces. We also prove a similar result using the generalized Kummer varieties instead of punctual Hilbert schemes. As a key step, we establish a closed formula for the top Chern character of their tangent bundles.

A Lie algebra action on the Chow ring of the Hilbert scheme of points of a K3 surface

We construct an action of the Neron--Severi part of the Looijenga-Lunts-Verbitsky Lie algebra on the Chow ring of the Hilbert scheme of points on a K3 surface. This yields a simplification of Maulik and Negut's proof that the cycle class map is injective on the subring generated by divisor classes as conjectured by Beauville. The key step in the construction is an explicit formula for Lefschetz duals in terms of Nakajima operators. Our results also lead to a formula for the monodromy action on Hilbert schemes in terms of Nakajima operators.

On equivariant derived categories

We study the equivariant category associated to a finite group action on the derived category of coherent sheaves of a smooth projective variety. We discuss decompositions of the equivariant category and faithful actions, prove the existence of a Serre functor, give a criterion for the equivariant category to be Calabi--Yau, and describe an obstruction for a subgroup of the group of auto-equivalences to act. As application we show that the equivariant category of any symplectic action on the derived category of an elliptic curve is equivalent to the derived category of an elliptic curve.

Equivariant categories of symplectic surfaces and fixed loci of Bridgeland moduli spaces

Given an action of a finite group $G$ on the derived category of a smooth projective variety $X$ we relate the fixed loci of the induced $G$-action on moduli spaces of stable objects in $D^b(\mathrm{Coh}(X))$ with moduli spaces of stable objects in the equivariant category $D^b(\mathrm{Coh}(X))_G$. As an application we obtain a criterion for the equivariant category of a symplectic action on the derived category of a symplectic surface to be equivalent to the derived category of a surface. This generalizes the derived McKay correspondence, and yields a general framework for describing fixed loci of symplectic group actions on moduli spaces of stable objects on symplectic surfaces.

Gromov-Witten theory of K3 surfaces and a Kaneko-Zagier equation for Jacobi forms

We prove the existence of quasi-Jacobi form solutions for an analogue of the Kaneko--Zagier differential equation for Jacobi forms. The transformation properties of the solutions under the Jacobi group are derived. A special feature of the solutions is the polynomial dependence of the index parameter. The results yield an explicit conjectural description for all double ramification cycle integrals in the Gromov--Witten theory of K3 surfaces.

Donaldson-Thomas invariants of abelian threefolds and Bridgeland stability conditions

We study the reduced Donaldson-Thomas theory of abelian threefolds using Bridgeland stability conditions. The main result is the invariance of the reduced Donaldson-Thomas invariants under all derived autoequivalences, up to explicitly given wall-crossing terms. We also present a numerical criterion for the absence of walls in terms of a discriminant function. For principally polarized abelian threefolds of Picard rank one, the wall-crossing contributions are discussed in detail. The discussion yield evidence for a conjectural formula for curve counting invariants by Bryan, Pandharipande, Yin, and the first author. For the proof we strengthen several known results on Bridgeland stability conditions of abelian threefolds. We show that certain previously constructed stability conditions satisfy the full support property. In particular, the stability manifold is non-empty. We also prove the existence of a Gieseker chamber and determine all wall-crossing contributions. A definition of reduced generalized Donaldson-Thomas invariants for arbitrary Calabi-Yau threefolds with abelian actions is given.

Rational curves in holomorphic symplectic varieties and Gromov-Witten invariants

We use Gromov-Witten theory to study rational curves in holomorphic symplectic varieties. We present a numerical criterion for the existence of uniruled divisors swept out by rational curves in the primitive curve class of a very general holomorphic symplectic variety of $K3^{[n]}$ type. We also classify all rational curves in the primitive curve class of the Fano variety of lines in a very general cubic $4$-fold, and prove the irreducibility of the corresponding moduli space. Our proofs rely on Gromov-Witten calculations by the first author, and in the Fano case on a geometric construction of Voisin. In the Fano case a second proof via classical geometry is sketched.

Elliptic curves in hyper-Kähler varieties

We show that the moduli space of elliptic curves of minimal degree in a general Fano variety of lines of a cubic fourfold is a non-singular curve of genus $631$. The curve admits a natural involution with connected quotient. We find that the general Fano contains precisely $3780$ elliptic curves of minimal degree with fixed (general) $j$-invariant. More generally, we express (modulo a transversality result) the enumerative count of elliptic curves of minimal degree in hyper-Kähler varieties with fixed $j$-invariant in terms of Gromov--Witten invariants. In $K3[2]$-type this leads to explicit formulas of these counts in terms of modular forms.

On reduced stable pair invariants

Let $X = S \times E$ be the product of a K3 surface $S$ and an elliptic curve $E$. Reduced stable pair invariants of $X$ can be defined via (1) cutting down the reduced virtual class with incidence conditions or (2) the Behrend function weighted Euler characteristic of the quotient of the moduli space by the translation action of $E$. We show that (2) arises naturally as the degree of a virtual class, and that the invariants (1) and (2) agree. This has applications to deformation invariance, rationality and a DT/PT correspondence for reduced invariants of $S \times E$.

Curve counting on elliptic Calabi-Yau threefolds via derived categories

We prove the elliptic transformation law of Jacobi forms for the generating series of Pandharipande--Thomas invariants of an elliptic Calabi--Yau 3-fold over a reduced class in the base. This proves part of a conjecture by Huang, Katz, and Klemm. For the proof we construct an involution of the derived category and use wall-crossing methods. We express the generating series of PT invariants in terms of low genus Gromov--Witten invariants and universal Jacobi forms. As applications we prove new formulas and recover several known formulas for the PT invariants of $\mathrm{K3} \times E$, abelian 3-folds, and the STU-model. We prove that the generating series of curve counting invariants for $\mathrm{K3} \times E$ with respect to a primitive class on the $\mathrm{K3}$ is a quasi-Jacobi form of weight -10. This provides strong evidence for the Igusa cusp form conjecture.

Automorphisms of Hilbert schemes of points on surfaces

We show that every automorphism of the Hilbert scheme of $n$ points on a weak Fano or general type surface is natural, i.e. induced by an automorphism of the surface, unless the surface is a product of curves and $n=2$. In the exceptional case there exists a unique non-natural automorphism. More generally, we prove that any isomorphism between Hilbert schemes of points on smooth projective surfaces, where one of the surfaces is weak Fano or of general type and not equal to the product of curves, is natural. We also show that every automorphism of the Hilbert scheme of $2$ points on $\mathbb{P}^n$ is natural.

CHL Calabi-Yau threefolds: Curve counting, Mathieu moonshine and Siegel modular forms

A CHL model is the quotient of $\mathrm{K3} \times E$ by an order $N$ automorphism which acts symplectically on the K3 surface and acts by shifting by an $N$-torsion point on the elliptic curve $E$. We conjecture that the primitive Donaldson-Thomas partition function of elliptic CHL models is a Siegel modular form, namely the Borcherds lift of the corresponding twisted-twined elliptic genera which appear in Mathieu moonshine. The conjecture matches predictions of string theory by David, Jatkar and Sen. We use the topological vertex to prove several base cases of the conjecture. Via a degeneration to $\mathrm{K3} \times \mathbb{P}^1$ we also express the DT partition functions as a twisted trace of an operator on Fock space. This yields further computational evidence. An extension of the conjecture to non-geometric CHL models is discussed. We consider CHL models of order $N=2$ in detail. We conjecture a formula for the Donaldson-Thomas invariants of all order two CHL models in all curve classes. The conjecture is formulated in terms of two Siegel modular forms. One of them, a Siegel form for the Iwahori subgroup, has to our knowledge not yet appeared in physics. This discrepancy is discussed in an appendix with Sheldon Katz.

Gromov-Witten theory of elliptic fibrations: Jacobi forms and holomorphic anomaly equations

We conjecture that the relative Gromov-Witten potentials of elliptic fibrations are (cycle-valued) lattice quasi-Jacobi forms and satisfy a holomorphic anomaly equation. We prove the conjecture for the rational elliptic surface in all genera and curve classes numerically. The generating series are quasi-Jacobi forms for the lattice $E_8$. We also show the compatibility of the conjecture with the degeneration formula. As Corollary we deduce that the Gromov-Witten potentials of the Schoen Calabi-Yau threefold (relative to $\mathbb{P}^1$) are $E_8 \times E_8$ quasi-bi-Jacobi forms and satisfy a holomorphic anomaly equation. This yields a partial verification of the BCOV holomorphic anomaly equation for Calabi-Yau threefolds. For abelian surfaces the holomorphic anomaly equation is proven numerically in primitive classes. The theory of lattice quasi-Jacobi forms is reviewed. In the Appendix the conjectural holomorphic anomaly equation is expressed as a matrix action on the space of (generalized) cohomological field theories. The compatibility of the matrix action with the Jacobi Lie algebra is proven. Holomorphic anomaly equations for K3 fibrations are discussed in an example.

Holomorphic anomaly equations and the Igusa cusp form conjecture

Let $S$ be a K3 surface and let $E$ be an elliptic curve. We solve the reduced Gromov-Witten theory of the Calabi-Yau threefold $S \times E$ for all curve classes which are primitive in the K3 factor. In particular, we deduce the Igusa cusp form conjecture. The proof relies on new results in the Gromov-Witten theory of elliptic curves and K3 surfaces. We show the generating series of Gromov-Witten classes of an elliptic curve are cycle-valued quasimodular forms and satisfy a holomorphic anomaly equation. The quasimodularity generalizes a result by Okounkov and Pandharipande, and the holomorphic anomaly equation proves a conjecture of Milanov, Ruan and Shen. We further conjecture quasimodularity and holomorphic anomaly equations for the cycle-valued Gromov-Witten theory of every elliptic fibration with section. The conjecture generalizes the holomorphic anomaly equations for ellliptic Calabi-Yau threefolds predicted by Bershadsky, Cecotti, Ooguri, and Vafa. We show a modified conjecture holds numerically for the reduced Gromov-Witten theory of K3 surfaces in primitive classes.

Gromov-Witten theory of $\mathrm{K3} \times \mathbb{P}^1$ and quasi-Jacobi forms

Let $S$ be a K3 surface with primitive curve class $β$. We solve the relative Gromov-Witten theory of $S \times \mathbb{P}^1$ in classes $(β,1)$ and $(β,2)$. The generating series are quasi-Jacobi forms and equal to a corresponding series of genus $0$ Gromov-Witten invariants on the Hilbert scheme of points of $S$. This proves a special case of a conjecture of Pandharipande and the author. The new geometric input of the paper is a genus bound for hyperelliptic curves on K3 surfaces proven by Ciliberto and Knutsen. By exploiting various formal properties we find that a key generating series is determined by the very first few coefficients. Let $E$ be an elliptic curve. As collorary of our computations we prove that Gromov-Witten invariants of $S \times E$ in classes $(β,1)$ and $(β,2)$ are coefficients of the reciprocal of the Igusa cusp form. We also calculate several linear Hodge integrals on the moduli space of stable maps to a K3 surface and the Gromov-Witten invariants of an abelian threefold in classes of type $(1,1,d)$.

Curve counting on abelian surfaces and threefolds

We study the enumerative geometry of algebraic curves on abelian surfaces and threefolds. In the abelian surface case, the theory is parallel to the well-developed study of the reduced Gromov-Witten theory of K3 surfaces. We prove complete results in all genera for primitive classes. The generating series are quasimodular forms of pure weight. Conjectures for imprimitive classes are presented. In genus 2, the counts in all classes are proven. Special counts match the Euler characteristic calculations of the moduli spaces of stable pairs on abelian surfaces by Göttsche-Shende. A formula for hyperelliptic curve counting in terms of Jacobi forms is proven (modulo a transversality statement). For abelian threefolds, complete conjectures in terms of Jacobi forms for the generating series of curve counts in primitive classes are presented. The base cases make connections to classical lattice counts of Debarre, Goettsche, and Lange-Sernesi. Further evidence is provided by Donaldson-Thomas partition function computations for abelian threefolds. A multiple cover structure is presented. The abelian threefold conjectures open a new direction in the subject.

Reduced Donaldson-Thomas invariants and the ring of dual numbers

Let $A$ be an abelian variety. We introduce $A$-equivariant Grothendieck rings and $A$-equivariant motivic Hall algebras, and endow them with natural integration maps to the ring of dual numbers. The construction allows a systematic treatment of reduced Donaldson-Thomas invariants by Hall algebra techniques. We calculate reduced Donaldson-Thomas invariants for $\mathrm{K3} \times E$ and abelian threefolds for several imprimitive curve classes. This verifies (in special cases) multiple cover formulas conjectured by Oberdieck-Pandharipande and Bryan-Oberdieck-Pandharipande-Yin.
