Primary black-hole scalar charges and kinetic screening in $K$-essence-Gauss-Bonnet gravity

Black holes beyond General Relativity may carry non-standard charges that impact their phenomenology. We study how the scalar charge that is induced by the scalar-Gauss-Bonnet coupling is affected by the presence of a nontrivial kinetic term $K(X)$ in a test-field approximation. We discuss the corresponding kinetic screening in the asymptotically flat, static solution first. We then turn to the case where self-accelerating cosmology is driven by $K(X)$, finding that the time-dependence of the scalar field opens up the parameter space, turning the black-hole scalar charge from secondary to primary. We provide a stability analysis and a measure of the intensity of the kinetic screening from the quartic dispersion relation of the mixed scalar and gravitational modes.

Causality and Stability from Acoustic Geometry

In scalar-tensor theories with derivative interactions, backgrounds spontaneously break local Lorentz invariance. We study the motion of perturbations of the scalar, "phonons", on these anisotropic time-dependent backgrounds in curved spacetimes. The phonons propagate on null geodesics of an effective acoustic spacetime which has its own metric and a connection featuring non-metricity with respect to the metric defined by gravity. These acoustic geodesics correspond to motion with four-acceleration in the usual spacetime. We indicate the differences and duality between the phonons' canonical four-momenta and four-velocities, and the analogies with photons in media. For an arbitrary moving observer, we covariantly define the phonon's energy, relative phase velocity, effective refraction index and mass tensor. We point out that true instabilities (ghosts, gradient) are observer independent, being identified by the acoustic metric's signature and determinant. However, apparent instabilities, such as complex phonon energies, can stem from an ill-posed Cauchy problem in certain observer frames. Negative phonon energies appear for supersonic observers, not signaling true instabilities, but leading to Cherenkov radiation. We extend this local picture to a global foliation, deriving the condition for a spatial slice to be a Cauchy surface for a well-posed initial value problem. This Hamiltonian is bounded if the foliation's comoving observer is subsonic. Otherwise, for a Killing vector timelike in both metrics, an alternative conserved charge that bounds motion exists. The action for perturbations yields an acoustically conserved asymmetric energy-momentum tensor (EMT), not conserved in the usual spacetime. Yet, with a timelike acoustic Killing vector, this EMT forms a current conserved in both the acoustic and usual spacetimes, with the acoustic Hamiltonian functional as its conserved charge.

Symmetric Teleparallel Gauss-Bonnet Gravity and its Extensions

General Teleparallel theories assume that curvature is vanishing in which case gravity can be solely represented by torsion and/or nonmetricity. Using differential form language, we express the Riemannian Gauss-Bonnet invariant concisely in terms of two General Teleparallel Gauss-Bonnet invariants, a bulk and a boundary one. Both terms are boundary terms in four dimensions. We also find that the split is not unique and present two possible alternatives. In the absence of nonmetricity our expressions coincide with the well-known Metric Teleparallel Gauss-Bonnet invariants for one of the splits. Next, we focus on the description where only nonmetricity is present and show some examples in different spacetimes. We finish our discussion by formulating novel modified Symmetric Teleparallel theories constructed with our new scalars.

Shimmering gravitons in the gamma-ray sky

What is the highest energy at which gravitons can be observed? We address this question by studying graviton-to-photon conversion - the inverse-Gertsenshtein effect - in the magnetic field of the Milky Way. We find that above $\sim 1~\mbox{PeV}$ the effective photon mass grows large enough to quench the conversion rate. For sub-PeV energies, the induced photon flux is comparable to the sensitivity of LHAASO to a diffuse $γ$-ray background, but only for graviton abundances of order $Ω_{\text{gw}} h^2_0 \sim 1$. In the future, owing to a better understanding of $γ$-ray backgrounds, larger effective areas and longer observation times, sub-PeV shimmering gravitons with a realistic abundance of $Ω_{\text{gw}} h^2_0 \sim 0.01$ could be detected. We show how such a large abundance is achieved in a cosmologically-motivated scenario of post-recombination superheavy dark matter decay. Therefore, the sub-PeV range might be the ultimate energy frontier at which gravitons can be observed.

Symmetric Teleparallel Horndeski Gravity

Horndeski gravity is the most general scalar-tensor theory with one scalar field leading to second-order Euler-Lagrange field equations for the metric and scalar field, and it is based on Riemannian geometry. In this paper, we formulate an analogue version of Horndeski gravity in a symmetric teleparallel geometry which assumes that both the curvature (general) and torsion are vanishing and gravity is only related to nonmetricity. Our setup requires that the Euler-Lagrange equations for not only metric and scalar field but also connection should be at most second order. We find that the theory can be always recast as a sum of the Riemannian Horndeski theory and new terms that are purely teleparallel. Due to the nature of nonmetricity, there are many more possible ways of constructing second-order theories of gravity. In this regard, up to some assumptions, we find the most general $k$-essence extension of Symmetric Teleparallel Horndeski gravity. We also formulate a novel theory containing higher-order derivatives acting on nonmetricity while still respecting the second-order conditions, which can be recast as an extension of Kinetic Gravity Braiding. We finish our study by presenting the FLRW cosmological equations for our model.

Generalization of the 2-form interactions

We systematically construct derivative self-interactions for massless and massive 2-forms. There exists a no-go theorem in the literature for constructing Galileon-like Lagrangians in four dimensions for the 2-form with gauge invariance, the Kalb-Rammond field. The presence of non-minimal couplings strongly relies on the contraction with divergenceless tensors. In four dimensions these are the Einstein tensor and the double dual Riemann tensor. Even though they are divergenceless on their own, their combination ceases to be. In the case of massless 2-forms we are not able to establish non-minimal couplings of the 2-form to the gravity sector with second order equations of motion due to the impossibility of building consistent combinations of divergenceless tensors. Using the systematical construction in terms of the Levi-Civita tensor, we aim at constructing Galileon-like derivative self-interactions for the massive 2-form. Apart from $L_2$ and $L_4$ we are not able to construct further Galileon-like Lagrangians. For the massive case, an important non-minimal coupling between the 2-form and the double dual Riemann tensor arises, which receives additional support from the decoupling limit. Promoting the interactions in $L_4$ requires the presence of appropriate non-minimal couplings and we give concrete examples for this.
