Near-Field Wideband Extremely Large-scale MIMO Transmission with Holographic Metasurface Antennas

Extremely large-scale multiple-input multiple-output (XL-MIMO) is the development trend of future wireless communications. However, the extremely large-scale antenna array could bring inevitable nearfield and dual-wideband effects that seriously reduce the transmission performance. This paper proposes an algorithmic framework to design the beam combining for the near-field wideband XL-MIMO uplink transmissions assisted by holographic metasurface antennas (HMAs). Firstly, we introduce a spherical-wave-based channel model that simultaneously takes into account both the near-field and dual-wideband effects. Based on such a model, we then formulate the HMA-based beam combining problem for the proposed XL-MIMO communications, which is challenging due to the nonlinear coupling of high dimensional HMA weights and baseband combiners. We further present a sum-mean-square-error-minimization-based algorithmic framework. Numerical results showcase that the proposed scheme can effectively alleviate the sum-rate loss caused by the near-field and dual-wideband effects in HMA-assisted XL-MIMO systems. Meanwhile, the proposed HMA-based scheme can achieve a higher sum rate than the conventional phase-shifter-based hybrid analog/digital one with the same array aperture.

ADMM-DAD net: a deep unfolding network for analysis compressed sensing

In this paper, we propose a new deep unfolding neural network based on the ADMM algorithm for analysis Compressed Sensing. The proposed network jointly learns a redundant analysis operator for sparsification and reconstructs the signal of interest. We compare our proposed network with a state-of-the-art unfolded ISTA decoder, that also learns an orthogonal sparsifier. Moreover, we consider not only image, but also speech datasets as test examples. Computational experiments demonstrate that our proposed network outperforms the state-of-the-art deep unfolding network, consistently for both real-world image and speech datasets.

Leveraging RIS-Enabled Smart Signal Propagation for Solving Infeasible Localization Problems

Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) have tremendous potential for both communication and localization. While communication benefits are now well-understood, the breakthrough nature of the technology may well lie in its capability to provide location estimates when conventional approaches fail, (e.g., due to insufficient available infrastructure). A limited number of example scenarios have been identified, but an overview of possible RIS-enabled localization scenarios is still missing from the literature. In this article, we present such an overview and extend localization to include even user orientation or velocity. In particular, we consider localization scenarios with various numbers of RISs, single- or multi-antenna base stations, narrowband or wideband transmissions, and near- and farfield operation. Furthermore, we provide a short description of the general RIS operation together with radio localization fundamentals, experimental validation of a localization scheme with two RISs, as well as key research directions and open challenges specific to RIS-enabled localization and sensing.

A New RIS Architecture with a Single Power Amplifier: Energy Efficiency and Error Performance Analysis

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-assisted communication have recently attracted the attention of the wireless communication community as a potential candidate for the next $6$-th generation (6G) of wireless networks. Various studies have been carried out on the RIS technology, which is capable of enabling the control of the signal propagation environment by network operators. However, when an RIS is used in its inherently passive structure, it appears to be only a supportive technology for communications, while suffering from a multiplicative path loss. Therefore, researchers have lately begun to focus on RIS hardware designs with minimal active elements to further boost the benefits of this technology. In this paper, we present a simple RIS hardware architecture including a single and variable gain amplifier for reflection amplification to confront the multiplicative path loss. The end-to-end signal model for communication systems assisted with the proposed amplifying RIS design is presented, together with an analysis focusing on the capacity maximization and theoretical bit error probability performance, which is corroborated by computer simulations. In addition, the major advantages of the proposed amplifying RIS design compared to its passive counterpart are discussed. It is shown that the proposed RIS-based wireless system significantly eliminates the double fading problem appearing in conventional passive RIS-assisted systems and improves the communication energy efficiency.

Online RIS Configuration Learning for Arbitrary Large Numbers of $1$-Bit Phase Resolution Elements

Reinforcement Learning (RL) approaches are lately deployed for orchestrating wireless communications empowered by Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RISs), leveraging their online optimization capabilities. Most commonly, in RL-based formulations for realistic RISs with low resolution phase-tunable elements, each configuration is modeled as a distinct reflection action, resulting to inefficient exploration due to the exponential nature of the search space. In this paper, we consider RISs with 1-bit phase resolution elements, and model the action of each of them as a binary vector including the feasible reflection coefficients. We then introduce two variations of the well-established Deep Q-Network (DQN) and Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient (DDPG) agents, aiming for effective exploration of the binary action spaces. For the case of DQN, we make use of an efficient approximation of the Q-function, whereas a discretization post-processing step is applied to the output of DDPG. Our simulation results showcase that the proposed techniques greatly outperform the baseline in terms of the rate maximization objective, when large-scale RISs are considered. In addition, when dealing with moderate scale RIS sizes, where the conventional DQN based on configuration-based action spaces is feasible, the performance of the latter technique is similar to the proposed learning approach.

Experimental Validation of Time Reversal Multiple Access for UWB Wireless Communications Centered at the $273$ GHz Frequency

Ultra-high data rates with low-power consumption wireless communications and low-complexity receivers is one of the key requirements for the next 6-th Generation (6G) of communication networks. Sub-Terahertz (SubTHz) frequency bands can support Ultra-WideBand (UWB) communications and can thus offer unprecedented increase in the wireless network capacity, rendering those bands and relevant research a strong candidate technology for 6G. However, in contrast to millimeter-wave communications, the technological advances in subTHz transceivers are not yet completely mature. In this paper, we focus on the Time Reversal (TR) precoding scheme, which is a computationally simple and robust technique capable of focusing UWB waveforms on both time and space, by exploiting channel diversity when available. We design a novel experimental setup, including a THz link inside a waveguide and operating at the carrier frequency 273.6 GHz with 2 GHz transmission bandwidth, and deploy it to perform multi-user communications with simple modulation. Our results demonstrate large communication rates with only 3 mm space separation of the receiving antennas.

Multi-User Wireless Communications with Holographic MIMO Surfaces: A Convenient Channel Model and Spectral Efficiency Analysis

The multi-user Holographic Multiple-Input and Multiple-Output Surface (MU-HMIMOS) paradigm, which is capable of realizing large continuous apertures with minimal power consumption and of shaping radio wave propagation at will, has been recently considered as an energy-efficient solution for future wireless networks. The tractable channel modeling of MU-HMIMOS signal propagation is one of the most critical challenges, mainly due to the coupling effect induced by the excessively large number of closely spaced patch antennas. In this paper, we focus on this challenge for downlink communications and model the electromagnetic channel in the wavenumber domain using the Fourier plane wave representation. Based on the proposed model, we devise a Zero-Forcing (ZF) precoding scheme, capitalizing on the sampled channel variance that depends on the number and spacing of the HMIMOS patch antennas, and perform a spectral efficiency analysis. Our simulation results showcase that the more patch antennas and the larger their spacing is, the performance of the considered MU-HMIMOS system improves. In addition, it is demonstrated that our theoretical performance expressions approximate sufficiently well the simulated spectral efficiency, even for the highly correlated cases, thus verifying the effectiveness and robustness of the presented analytical framework.

Time Reversal Precoding at SubTHz Frequencies: Experimental Results on Spatiotemporal Focusing

Due to availability of large spectrum chunks, the sub-TeraHertz (subTHz) frequency band can support Ultra-WideBand (UWB) wireless communications, paving the way for unprecedented increase in the wireless network capacity. This fact is expected to be the next breakthrough for the upcoming sixth Generation (6G) standards. However, the technology of subTHz transceivers is not yet mature enough to apply the advanced signal processing currently being implemented for millimeter wave wireless communications. In this paper, we consider the Time Reversal (TR) precoding technique, which provides simple and robust processing capable to offer highly focalized in time and space UWB waveforms, exploiting the spatial diversity of wireless channels. We first investigate experimentally the performance of subTHz TR focusing in complex media inside a leaking reverberation cavity. We then combine TR with received spatial modulation to realize data communication using a simple non-coherent receiver with two antennas. Our results showcase the capability of TR to offer focusing in time in the order of few nanoseconds and in space in the order of less than 1 mm.

Wideband Multi-User MIMO Communications with Frequency Selective RISs: Element Response Modeling and Sum-Rate Maximization

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RISs) are an emerging technology for future wireless communication systems, enabling improved coverage in an energy efficient manner. RISs are usually metasurfaces, constituting of two-dimensional arrangements of metamaterial elements, whose individual response is commonly modeled in the literature as an adjustable phase shifter. However, this model holds only for narrowband communications, and when wideband transmissions are utilized, one has to account for the frequency selectivity of metamaterials, whose response usually follows a Lorentzian-like profile. In this paper, we consider the uplink of a wideband RIS-empowered multi-user Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) wireless system with Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) signaling, while accounting for the frequency selectivity of RISs. In particular, we focus on designing the controllable parameters dictating the Lorentzian response of each RIS metamaterial element, in order to maximize the achievable sum rate. We devise a scheme combining block coordinate descent with penalty dual decomposition to tackle the resulting challenging optimization framework. Our simulation results reveal the achievable rates one can achieve using realistically frequency selective RISs in wideband settings, and quantify the performance loss that occurs when using state-of-the-art methods which assume that the RIS elements behave as frequency-flat phase shifters.

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RISs) constitute the enabler for programmable propagation of electromagnetic signals, and are lately being considered as a candidate physical-layer technology for the demanding connectivity, reliability, localization, and sustainability requirements of next generation wireless communications networks. In this paper, we present various deployment scenarios for RIS-enabled smart wireless environments that have been recently designed by the ongoing EU H2020 RISE-6G project. We identify various deployment strategies and sketch the core architectural requirements in terms of RIS control and signaling, depending on the RIS hardware architectures and their respective capabilities. Furthermore, we introduce and discuss, via preliminary simulation results and reflectarray measurements, two key novel challenges with RIS-enabled smart wireless environments, namely, the area of influence and the bandwidth of influence of RISs, which corroborate the need for careful deployment and planning of this new technology.

Arbitrary Beam Pattern Approximation via RISs with Measured Element Responses

Smart radio environments (SREs) are seen as a key rising concept of next generation wireless networks, where propagation channels between transmitters and receivers are purposely controlled. One promising approach to achieve such channel flexibility relies on semipassive reflective Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs), which can shape the bouncing multipath signals for enhancing communication quality of service, making localization feasible in adverse operating conditions, or reducing unwanted electromagnetic emissions. This paper introduces a generic framework that aims at optimizing the end-to-end precoder controlled by RISs, so that arbitrary beam patterns can be generated, given a predefined lookup table of RIS element-wise complex reflection coefficients. This method is validated and illustrated for different targeted beam patterns in both the far-field and the near-field regimes, while considering the prior characterization of real-life RIS hardware prototypes. These results show how, and to which extent, RIS configuration optimization can approximate the desired beams under realistic hardware limitations and low-complexity implementation practicability, or conversely, which RIS elements' lookup tables would be more suitable. The latter can provide useful guidelines for future RIS hardware designs.

RIS-Enabled Self-Localization: Leveraging Controllable Reflections With Zero Access Points

Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) are one of the most promising technological enablers of the next (6th) generation of wireless systems. In this paper, we introduce a novel use-case of the RIS technology in radio localization, which is enabling the user to estimate its own position via transmitting orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) pilots and processing the signal reflected from the RIS. We demonstrate that user localization in this scenario is possible by deriving Cramer-Rao lower bounds on the positioning error and devising a low-complexity position estimation algorithm. We consider random and directional RIS phase profiles and apply a specific temporal coding to them, such that the reflected signal from the RIS can be separated from the uncontrolled multipath. Finally, we assess the performance of our position estimator for an example system and show that the proposed algorithm can attain the derived bound at high signal-to-noise ratio values.

Tensor-based Channel Tracking for RIS-Empowered Multi-User MIMO Wireless Systems

The accurate estimation of Channel State Information (CSI) is of crucial importance for the successful operation of Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) communication systems, especially in a Multi-User (MU) time-varying environment and when employing the emerging technology of Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RISs). Their predominantly passive nature renders the estimation of the channels involved in the user-RIS-base station link a quite challenging problem. Moreover, the time-varying nature of most of the realistic wireless channels drives up the cost of real-time channel tracking significantly, especially when RISs of massive size are deployed. In this paper, we develop a channel tracking scheme for the uplink of RIS-enabled MU MIMO systems in the presence of channel fading. The starting point is a tensor representation of the received signal and we rely on its PARAllel FACtor (PARAFAC) analysis to both get the initial estimate and track the channel time variation. Simulation results for various system settings are reported, which validate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed channel tracking approach.

Deep-Learning-Assisted Configuration of Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces in Dynamic rich-scattering Environments

The integration of Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RISs) into wireless environments endows channels with programmability, and is expected to play a key role in future communication standards. To date, most RIS-related efforts focus on quasi-free-space, where wireless channels are typically modeled analytically. Many realistic communication scenarios occur, however, in rich-scattering environments which, moreover, evolve dynamically. These conditions present a tremendous challenge in identifying an RIS configuration that optimizes the achievable communication rate. In this paper, we make a first step toward tackling this challenge. Based on a simulator that is faithful to the underlying wave physics, we train a deep neural network as surrogate forward model to capture the stochastic dependence of wireless channels on the RIS configuration under dynamic rich-scattering conditions. Subsequently, we use this model in combination with a genetic algorithm to identify RIS configurations optimizing the communication rate. We numerically demonstrate the ability of the proposed approach to tune RISs to improve the achievable rate in rich-scattering setups.

Jointly Learned Symbol Detection and Signal Reflection in RIS-Aided Multi-user MIMO Systems

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RISs) are regarded as a key technology for future wireless communications, enabling programmable radio propagation environments. However, the passive reflecting feature of RISs induces notable challenges on channel estimation, making coherent symbol detection a challenging task. In this paper, we consider the uplink of RIS-aided multi-user Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) systems and propose a Machine Learning (ML) approach to jointly design the multi-antenna receiver and configure the RIS reflection coefficients, which does not require explicit full knowledge of the channel input-output relationship. Our approach devises a ML-based receiver, while the configurations of the RIS reflection patterns affecting the underlying propagation channel are treated as hyperparameters. Based on this system design formulation, we propose a Bayesian ML framework for optimizing the RIS hyperparameters, according to which the transmitted pilots are directly used to jointly tune the RIS and the multi-antenna receiver. Our simulation results demonstrate the capability of the proposed approach to provide reliable communications in non-linear channel conditions corrupted by Gaussian noise.
