Primordial Black Hole Constraints with Large Extra Dimensions

We study how the constraints on the primordial black hole density arising from the extragalactic photon background are modified in the scenario that there exist extra large spatial dimensions. We find that though the overall magnitude of the constraints is not substantially different, the mass ranges to which they apply are, and for some choices of mass it is possible for the black holes to constitute the entirety of the dark matter.

Tunnelling of Charged Particles from Black Holes

We state and explain the total rate at which a charged non-rotating black hole emits charged particles, taking into account both Hawking radiation and Schwinger pair production simultaneously. We give concrete formulae for this emission rate in certain limits, with the greatest simplification occurring when the black hole is much larger than the particle's Compton wavelength. We provide an interpretation of the result in terms of a tunnelling process, both through the black hole horizon and the surrounding electric field, and comment on how suppression due to tunnelling modifies the emission spectrum.

Hawking Radiation of Extended Objects

We compute the effects on the temperature and precise spectrum of Hawking radiation from a Schwarzschild black hole when the emitted object is taken to be spatially extended. We find that in the low-momentum regime, the power emitted is exponentially suppressed for sufficiently large radiated objects, or sufficiently small black holes, though the temperature of emission is unchanged. We numerically determine the magnitude of this suppression as a function of the size and mass of the object and the black hole, and discuss the implications for various extended objects in nature.

Higgs Assisted Q-balls from Pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone Bosons

Motivated by recent constructions of TeV-scale strongly-coupled dynamics, either associated with the Higgs sector itself as in pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone boson (pNGB) Higgs models or in theories of asymmetric dark matter, we show that stable solitonic Q- balls can be formed from light pion-like pNGB fields carrying a conserved global quantum number in the presence of the Higgs field. We focus on the case of thick-wall Q-balls, where solutions satisfying all constraints are shown to exist over a range of parameter values. In the limit that our approximations hold, the Q-balls are weakly bound and parametrically large, and the form of the interactions of the light physical Higgs with the Q-ball is determined by the breaking of scale symmetry.
