Eliminating the eta-problem in SUGRA Hybrid Inflation with Vector Backreaction

It is shown that, when the inflaton field modulates the gauge kinetic function of the gauge fields in supergravity realisations of inflation, the dynamic backreaction leads to a new inflationary attractor solution, in which the inflaton's variation suffers additional impedance. As a result, slow-roll inflation can naturally occur along directions of the scalar potential which would be too steep and curved to support it otherwise. This provides a generic solution to the infamous eta-problem of inflation in supergravity. Moreover, it is shown that, in the new inflationary attractor, the spectral index of the generated curvature perturbations is kept mildly red despite eta of order unity. The above findings are applied to a model of hybrid inflation is supergravity with a generic Kaehler potential. The spectral index of the generated curvature perturbations is found to be 0.97 - 0.98, in excellent agreement with observations. The gauge field can play the role of the vector curvaton after inflation but observable statistical anisotropy requires substantial tuning of the gauge coupling.

Cosmological Properties of a Gauged Axion

We analyze the most salient cosmological features of axions in extensions of the Standard Model with a gauged anomalous extra U(1) symmetry. The model is built by imposing the constraint of gauge invariance in the anomalous effective action, which is extended with Wess-Zumino counterterms. These generate axion-like interactions of the axions to the gauge fields and a gauged shift symmetry. The scalar sector is assumed to acquire a non-perturbative potential after inflation, at the electroweak phase transition, which induces a mixing of the Stuckelberg field of the model with the scalars of the electroweak sector, and at the QCD phase transition. We discuss the possible mechanisms of sequential misalignments which could affect the axions of these models, and generated, in this case, at both transitions. We compute the contribution of these particles to dark matter, quantifying their relic densities as a function of the Stuckelberg mass. We also show that models with a single anomalous U(1) in general do not account for the dark energy, due to the presence of mixed U(1)-SU(3) anomalies.

The Standard-smooth Variant of Hybrid Inflation

We consider the extension of the supersymmetric Pati-Salam model introduced in order to solve the b-quark mass problem in supersymmetric theories with Yukawa unification, universal boundary conditions and mu>0. This model naturally leads to the new shifted and new smooth hybrid inflation scenarios, which, however, yield, in minimal supergravity, too large values of the spectral index n_s. We show that this problem can also be resolved within the same model by a two-stage inflationary scenario based only on renormalizable superpotential interactions. The first stage is of the standard and the second of the new smooth hybrid type. The cosmological scales exit the horizon during the first stage of inflation and acceptable n_s's can be achieved by restricting the number of e-foldings of our present horizon during this inflationary stage. The additional e-foldings needed for solving the horizon and flatness problems are naturally provided by the second stage of inflation. Monopoles are formed at the end of the first stage of inflation and are, subsequently, diluted by the second stage of inflation so that their density in the present universe is utterly negligible.

Semi-shifted hybrid inflation with B-L cosmic strings

We discuss a new inflationary scenario which is realized within the extended supersymmetric Pati-Salam model which yields an acceptable b-quark mass for universal boundary conditions and mu>0 by modestly violating Yukawa unification and leads to new shifted, new smooth, or standard-smooth hybrid inflation. Inflation takes place along a "semi-shifted" classically flat direction on which the U(1)_{B-L} gauge group remains unbroken. After the end of inflation, U(1)_{B-L} breaks spontaneously and a network of local cosmic strings, which contribute a small amount to the curvature perturbation, is produced. We show that, in minimal supergravity, this "semi-shifted" inflationary scenario is compatible with a recent fit to data which uses field-theory simulations of a local string network. Taking into account the requirement of gauge unification, we find that, for spectral index n_s=1, the predicted fractional contribution f_{10} of strings to the temperature power spectrum at multipole l=10 is about 0.039. Also, for f_{10}=0.10, which is the best-fit value, we obtain that n_s is about 1.0254. Spectral indices lower than about 0.98 are excluded and blue spectra are slightly favored. Magnetic monopoles are not formed at the end of semi-shifted hybrid inflation.

Hybrid inflation followed by modular inflation

Inflationary models with a superheavy scale F-term hybrid inflation followed by an intermediate scale modular inflation are considered. The restrictions on the power spectrum P_R of curvature perturbation and the spectral index n_s from the recent data within the power-law cosmological model with cold dark matter and a cosmological constant can be met provided that the number of e-foldings N_HI* suffered by the pivot scale k_*=0.002/Mpc during hybrid inflation is suitably restricted. The additional e-foldings needed for solving the horizon and flatness problems are generated by modular inflation with a string axion as inflaton. For central values of P_R and n_s, the grand unification scale comes out, in the case of standard hybrid inflation, close to its supersymmetric value M_GUT=2.86 x 10^16 GeV, the relevant coupling constant is relatively large (0.005-0.14), and N_HI* is between 10 and 21.7. In the shifted [smooth] hybrid inflation case, the grand unification scale can be identified with M_GUT for N_HI*=21 [N_HI*=18].

Modular inflation and the curvaton

Supersymmetric Peccei-Quinn models which provide a suitable candidate for the curvaton field are studied. These models also solve the mu problem, while generating the Peccei-Quinn scale dynamically. The curvaton is a pseudo Nambu-Goldstone boson corresponding to an angular degree of freedom orthogonal to the axion. Its order parameter increases substantially following a phase transition during inflation. This results in a drastic amplification of the curvaton perturbations. Consequently, these models are able to accommodate low-scale inflation with Hubble parameter at the TeV scale such as modular inflation. We find that modular inflation with the orthogonal axion as curvaton can indeed account for the observations for natural values of the parameters. In particular, the spectral index can easily be made adequately lower than unity in accord with the recent data.

Particle Physics Approach to Dark Matter

We review the main proposals of particle physics for the composition of the cold dark matter in the universe. Strong axion contribution to cold dark matter is not favored if the Peccei-Quinn field emerges with non-zero value at the end of inflation and the inflationary scale is superheavy since, under these circumstances, it leads to unacceptably large isocurvature perturbations. The lightest neutralino is the most popular candidate constituent of cold dark matter. Its relic abundance in the constrained minimal supersymmetric standard model can be reduced to acceptable values by pole annihilation of neutralinos or neutralino-stau coannihilation. Axinos can also contribute to cold dark matter provided that the reheat temperature is adequately low. Gravitinos can constitute the cold dark matter only in limited regions of the parameter space. We present a supersymmetric grand unified model leading to violation of Yukawa unification and, thus, allowing an acceptable b-quark mass within the constrained minimal supersymmetric standard model with mu>0. The model possesses a wide range of parameters consistent with the data on the cold dark matter abundance as well as other phenomenological constraints. Also, it leads to a new version of shifted hybrid inflation.

Basics of inflationary cosmology

The early stages of the universe evolution are discussed according to the hot big bang model and the grand unified theories. The shortcomings of big bang are summarized and their resolution by inflationary cosmology is sketched. Cosmological inflation, the subsequent oscillation and decay of the inflaton field, and the resulting reheating of the universe are studied in some detail. The density perturbations produced by inflation and the temperature fluctuations of the cosmic microwave background radiation are introduced. The hybrid inflationary model is described. Two natural variants of the supersymmetric version of this model which avoid the disaster encountered in its standard realization from the overproduction of magnetic monopoles are presented.

Non-thermal leptogenesis via direct inflaton decay without SU(2)(L) triplets

We present a non-thermal leptogenesis scenario following standard supersymmetric hybrid inflation, in the case where light neutrinos acquire mass via the usual seesaw mechanism and inflaton decay to heavy right-handed neutrino superfields is kinematically disallowed, or the right-handed neutrinos which can be decay products of the inflaton are unable to generate sufficient baryon asymmetry via their subsequent decay. The primordial lepton asymmetry is generated through the decay of the inflaton into light particles by the interference of one-loop diagrams with exchange of different right-handed neutrinos. The mechanism requires superpotential couplings explicitly violating a U(1) R-symmetry and R-parity. We take into account the constraints from neutrino masses and mixing and the preservation of the primordial asymmetry. We consider two models, one without and one with SU(2)(R) gauge symmetry. We show that the former is viable, whereas the latter is ruled out. Although the broken R-parity need not have currently observable low-energy signatures, some R-parity-violating slepton decays may be detectable in the future colliders.

Density perturbations from both the inflaton and the curvaton

We consider a supersymmetric grand unified model which leads to hybrid inflation and solves the strong CP and mu problems via a Peccei-Quinn symmetry, with the Peccei-Quinn field acting as a curvaton generating together with the inflaton the curvature perturbation. The model yields an isocurvature perturbation too of mixed correlation with the adiabatic one. Two choices of parameters are confronted with the Wilkinson microwave anisotropy probe and other cosmic microwave background radiation data. For the choice giving the best fitting, the curvaton contribution to the amplitude of the adiabatic perturbation must be smaller than 67% at 95% confidence level and the best-fit power spectra are dominated by the adiabatic inflaton contribution. This case is disfavored relative to the pure inflaton scale-invariant case with odds of 50 to 1. For the second choice, the adiabatic mode is dominated by the curvaton, but this case is strongly disfavored relative to the pure inflaton case (with odds of 10^7 to 1). Thus, in this model, the perturbations must be dominated by the adiabatic component from the inflaton.

Leptogenesis through direct inflaton decay to light particles

We present a scenario of nonthermal leptogenesis following supersymmetric hybrid inflation, in the case where inflaton decay to both heavy right handed neutrino and SU(2)_L triplet superfields is kinematically disallowed. Lepton asymmetry is generated through the decay of the inflaton into light particles by the interference of one-loop diagrams with right handed neutrino and SU(2)_L triplet exchange respectively. We require superpotential couplings explicitly violating a U(1) R-symmetry and R-parity. However, the broken R-parity need not have currently observable low-energy signatures. Also, the lightest sparticle can be stable. Some R-parity violating slepton decays may, though, be detectable in the future colliders. We take into account the constraints from neutrino masses and mixing and the preservation of the primordial lepton asymmetry.

Curvaton Dynamics

In contrast to the inflaton's case, the curvature perturbations due to the curvaton field depend strongly on the evolution of the curvaton before its decay. We study in detail the dynamics of the curvaton evolution during and after inflation. We consider that the flatness of the curvaton potential may be affected by supergravity corrections, which introduce an effective mass proportional to the Hubble parameter. We also consider that the curvaton potential may be dominated by a quartic or by a non-renormalizable term. We find analytic solutions for the curvaton's evolution for all these possibilities. In particular, we show that, in all the above cases, the curvaton's density ratio with respect to the background density of the Universe decreases. Therefore, it is necessary that the curvaton decays only after its potential becomes dominated by the quadratic term, which results in (Hubble damped) sinusoidal oscillations. In the case when a non-renormalizable term dominates the potential, we find a possible non-oscillatory attractor solution that threatens to erase the curvature perturbation spectrum. Finally, we study the effects of thermal corrections to the curvaton's potential and show that, if they ever dominate the effective mass, they lead to premature thermalization of the curvaton condensate. To avoid this danger, a stringent bound has to be imposed on the coupling of the curvaton to the thermal bath.

The Peccei-Quinn Field as Curvaton

A simple extension of the minimal supersymmetric standard model which naturally and simultaneously solves the strong CP and mu problems via a Peccei-Quinn and a continuous R symmetry is considered. This model is supplemented with hybrid inflation and leptogenesis, but without taking the specific details of these scenarios. It is shown that the Peccei-Quinn field can successfully act as a curvaton generating the total curvature perturbation in the universe in accord with the cosmic background explorer measurements. A crucial phenomenon, which assists us to achieve this, is the "tachyonic amplification" of the perturbation acquired by this field during inflation if the field, in its subsequent evolution, happens to be stabilized for a while near a maximum of the potential. In this case, the contribution of the field to the total energy density is also enhanced ("tachyonic effect"), which helps too. The cold dark matter in the universe consists, in this model, mainly of axions which carry an isocurvature perturbation uncorrelated with the total curvature perturbation. There are also lightest sparticles (neutralinos) which, like the baryons, originate from the inflationary reheating and, thus, acquire an isocurvature perturbation fully correlated with the curvature perturbation. So, the overall isocurvature perturbation has a mixed correlation with the adiabatic one. It is shown that the presently available bound on such an isocurvature perturbation from cosmic microwave background radiation and other data is satisfied. Also, the constraint on the non-Gaussianity of the curvature perturbation obtained from the recent Wilkinson microwave anisotropy probe data is fulfilled thanks to the "tachyonic effect".

Introduction to Inflationary Cosmology

The early universe according to the big bang and the grand unified theories is discussed. The shortcomings of big bang are summarized together with their resolution by inflationary cosmology. Inflation, the subsequent oscillation and decay of the inflaton, and the resulting "reheating" of the universe are studied. Two "natural" extensions of this model which avoid the disaster encountered in its standard realization from the overproduction of monopoles are presented.
