Bulk QCD Thermodynamics and Sterile Neutrino Dark Matter

We point out that the relic densities of singlet (sterile) neutrinos of interest in viable warm and cold dark matter scenarios, depend on the characteristics of the QCD transition in the early universe. In the most promising of these dark matter scenarios the production of the singlets occurs at or near the QCD transition. Since production of the singlets, their dilution, and the disappearance of weak scatterers occur simultaneously, we calculate these processes contemporaneously to obtain accurate predictions of relic sterile neutrino mass density. Therefore, a determination of the mass and superweak mixing of the singlet neutrino through, for example, its radiative decay, along with a determination of its contribution to the critical density, can provide insight into the finite-temperature QCD transition.

Connection between supernova shocks, flavor transformation, and the neutrino signal

We show that the supernova neutrino signal in terrestrial detectors could give characteristic signatures as the shock propagates through the regions where matter-enhanced neutrino flavor transformation takes place. This effect could allow existing and proposed supernova neutrino detectors to provide new insights into the problem of shock re-generation and propagation. Alternatively, such observations could allow unique insights into the neutrino mass and mixing matrix.

Light Element Synthesis in High Entropy Relativistic Flows Associated with Gamma Ray Bursts

We calculate and discuss the light element freeze-out nucleosynthesis in high entropy winds and fireballs for broad ranges of entropy-per-baryon, dynamic timescales characterizing relativistic expansion, and neutron-to-proton ratios. With conditions characteristic of Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs) we find that deuterium production can be prodigious, with final abundance values 2H/H approximately 2%, depending on the fireball isospin, late time dynamics, and the effects of neutron decoupling- induced high energy non-thermal nuclear reactions. This implies that there potentially could be detectable local enhancements in the deuterium abundance associated with GRB events.

The Chemical Composition and Age of the Metal-Poor Halo Star BD +17^\circ 3248

We have combined new high-resolution spectra obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and ground-based facilities to make a comprehensive new abundance analysis of the metal-poor, halo star BD +17^\circ 3248. We have detected the third r-process peak elements osmium, platinum, and (for the first time in a metal-poor star) gold, elements whose abundances can only be reliably determined using HST. Our observations illustrate a pattern seen in other similar halo stars with the abundances of the heavier neutron-capture elements, including the third r-process peak elements, consistent with a scaled solar system r-process distribution. The abundances of the lighter neutron-capture elements, including germanium and silver, fall below that same scaled solar r-process curve, a result similar to that seen in the ultra-metal-poor star CS 22892--052. A single site with two regimes or sets of conditions, or perhaps two different sites for the lighter and heavier neutron-capture elements, might explain the abundance pattern seen in this star. In addition we have derived a reliable abundance for the radioactive element thorium. We tentatively identify U II at 3859 A in the spectrum of BD +17^\circ 3248, which makes this the second detection of uranium in a very metal-poor halo star. Our combined observations cover the widest range in proton number (from germanium to uranium) thus far of neutron-capture elements in metal-poor Galactic halo stars. Employing the thorium and uranium abundances in comparison with each other and with several stable elements, we determine an average cosmochronological age for BD +17^\circ 3248 of 13.8 +/- 4 Gyr, consistent with that found for other similar metal-poor halo stars.

Europium Isotopic Abundances in Very Metal-poor Stars

Europium isotopic abundance fractions are reported for the very metal-poor, neutron-capture-rich giant stars CS 22892-052, HD 115444, and BD +17 3248. The abundance fractions, derived from analysis of several strong Eu II lines appearing in high-resolution spectra of these stars, are in excellent agreement with each other and with their values in the Solar System: fraction(\iso{Eu}{151}) ~= fraction(\iso{Eu}{153}) ~= 0.5. Detailed abundance studies of very metal-poor stars have previously shown that the total elemental abundances of stable atoms with atomic numbers z >= 56 typically match very closely those of a scaled solar-system r-process abundance distribution. The present results for the first time extend this agreement to the isotopic level.

On Steady State Neutrino Heated Ultra-Relativistic Winds from Compact Objects

We study steady state winds from compact objects in the regime where the wind velocity at infinity is ultra-relativistic. This may have relevance to some models of Gamma-Ray-Bursts (GRB's). Particular attention is paid to the case where neutrinos provide the heating. Unless the neutrino luminosity is very large, L>10^{54} erg/s, the only allowed steady state solutions are those where energy deposition is dominated by neutrino-antineutrino annihilation at the sonic point. In this case, the matter temperature near the neutron star surface is low, less than 1MeV for typical neutrino luminosities. This is in contrast to the case for sub-relativistic winds discussed in the context of supernovae where the matter temperature near the neutron star approximates the temperature characterizing the neutrinos. We also investigate the setting of the neutron to proton ratio (n/p) in these winds and find that only for large (>10 MeV) electron neutrino or electron anti-neutrino temperatures is n/p entirely determined by neutrino capture. Otherwise, n/p retains an imprint of conditions in the neutron star.

A New Connection between Central Engine Weak Physics and the Dynamics of Gamma-Ray Burst Fireballs

We demonstrate a qualitatively new aspect of the dynamics of Gamma-Ray Burst (GRB) fireballs: the development of a substantial dispersion in the proton component in fireballs in which neutron decoupling occurs and is sufficiently pronounced. This effect depends sensitively on the neutron to proton ratio in the fireball, becoming more dramatic with increasing neutron excess. Simple physical arguments and transport calculations indicate that the dispersion in Lorentz factor of the protons can be of order the final mean Lorentz factor of the fireball. We show how plasma instabilities could play an important role in the evolution of the fireball and how they might ultimately govern the development of such a velocity dispersion in the proton component. The role of these instabilities in setting/diminishing a proton Lorentz factor dispersion represents a new and potentially important venue for the study of plasma instabilities. Significant dispersion in the proton velocities translates into fewer protons attaining the highest Lorentz factors. This is tantamount to a reduction in the total energy required to attain a given Lorentz factor for the highest energy protons. As well, a proton component dispersion can have consequences for the electromagnetic and neutrino signature of GRBs.

Can a Large Neutron Excess Help Solve the Baryon Loading Problem in Gamma-Ray Burst Fireballs?

We point out that the baryon-loading problem in Gamma-Ray Burst (GRB) models can be amelioriated if a significant fraction of the baryons which inertially confine the fireball are converted to neutrons. A high neutron fraction in some circumstances can result in a reduced transfer of energy from relativistic light particles in the fireball to baryons. The energy needed to produce the required relativistic flow in the GRB is consequently reduced, in some cases by orders of magnitude. This could be relevant to GRB models because a high neutron-to-proton ratio has been calculated in neutron star-merger fireball environments. Significant neutron excess also could occur near compact objects with high neutrino fluxes.

The Increase in the Primordial He-4 Yield in the Two-Doublet Four-Neutrino Mixing Scheme

We assess the effects on Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN) of lepton number generation in the early universe resulting from the two-doublet four-neutrino mass/mixing scheme. It has been argued that this neutrino mass/mixing arrangement gives the most viable fit to the existing data. We study full 4 x 4 mixing matrices and show how possible symmetries in these can affect the BBN He-4 abundance yields. Though there is as yet no consensus on the reliability of BBN calculations with neutrino flavor mixing, we show that, in the case where the sign of the lepton number asymmetry is unpredictable, BBN considerations may pick out specific relationships between mixing angles. In particular, reconciling the observed light element abundances with a \barν_μ<-> \barν_e oscillation interpretation of LSND would allow unique new constraints on the neutrino mixing angles in this model.

Evidence of Multiple r-Process Sites in the Early Galaxy: New Observations of CS 22892-052

First results are reported of a new abundance study of neutron-capture elements in the ultra-metal-poor (UMP; [Fe/H] = -3.1) halo field giant star CS 22892-052. Using new high resolution, high signal-to-noise spectra, abundances of more than 30 neutron-capture elements (Z>30) have been determined. Six elements in the 40 =56) stable neutron-capture elements in CS 22892-052 match well the scaled solar system r-process abundance distribution. From the observed Th abundance, an average age of ~= 16 +/- 4 Gyr is derived for cs22892-052, consistent with the lower age limit of ~= 11 Gyr derived from the upper limit on the U abundance. The concordance of scaled solar r-process and CS 22892-052 abundances breaks down for the lighter neutron-capture elements, supporting previous suggestions that different r-process production sites are responsible for lighter and heavier neutron-capture elements.

Primordial black holes, phase transitions, and the fate of the universe

Phase transitions in the early universe are prime settings for the production of primordial black holes, since they can break the relatively quiescent homogeneity and isotropy of Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) cosmologies. These epochs of "symmetry breaking," moreover, can affect the subsequent development of spacetime by changing the evolution of some FRW parameters, including the present age and density of the universe. We discuss the relative importance of such effects on constraining mechanisms of black hole formation.

What are sterile neutrinos good for?

Taken at face value, current experimental data indicate the existence of a new particle, the sterile neutrino, which must be a singlet under the Standard Model gauge group. Although they are not detectable through traditional means, such particles have interesting observable consequences for particle astrophysics and cosmology. Here we examine these implications and discuss, in particular, sterile neutrino dark matter and the relationship between matter-enhanced active-sterile neutrino transformation and the synthesis of heavy elements in supernovae.

Transformation-Induced Nonthermal Neutrino Spectra and Primordial Nucleosynthesis

We examine in detail the changes in the production of primordial helium resulting from nonthermal neutrino momentum distributions produced by resonant transformation of electron-type neutrinos to steriles. These transformations, anti-nu_e -> anti-nu_s (nu_e->nu_s), amplify a positive (negative) lepton number asymmetry. We find that the resulting supression relative to a thermal distribution of low energy nu_e reduces n -> p conversion to a greater extent than does the enhancement of n -> p from an identical suppression of anti-nu_e. Thus, equal lepton-number asymmetries of opposite sign have unequal effects on the resulting helium yield in primordial nucleosynthesis.

Comments Regarding "On Neutrino-Mixing-Generated Lepton Asymmetry and the Primordial Helium-4 Abundance"

This is a reply to the preprint "On Neutrino-Mixing-Generated Lepton Asymmetry and the Primordial Helium-4 Abundance" by M. V. Chizhov and D. P. Kirilova (hep-ph/9908525), which criticised our recent publication (X. Shi, G. M. Fuller and K. Abazajian Phys. Rev. D 60, 063002 (1999)). Here we point out factual errors in their description of what our paper says. We also show that their criticisms of our work have no merit.

Neutrino-Mixing-Generated Lepton Asymmetry and the Primordial $^4$He Abundance

It has been proposed that an asymmetry in the electron neutrino sector may be generated by resonant active-sterile neutrino transformations during Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN). We calculate the change in the primordial $^4$He yield $Y$ resulting from this asymmetry, taking into account both the time evolution of the $ν_e$ and $\barν_e$ distribution function and the spectral distortions in these. We calculate this change in two schemes: (1) a lepton asymmetry directly generated by $ν_e$ mixing with a lighter right-handed sterile neutrino $ν_s$; and (2) a lepton asymmetry generated by a $ν_τ\leftrightarrowν_s$ or $ν_μ\leftrightarrowν_s$ transformation which is subsequently partially converted to an asymmetry in the $ν_e\barν_e$ sector by a matter-enhanced active-active neutrino transformation. In the first scheme, we find that the percentage change in $Y$ is between -1% and 9% (with the sign depending on the sign of the asymmetry), bounded by the Majorana mass limit $m_{ν_e}\la 1$ eV. In the second scheme, the maximal percentage reduction in $Y$ is 2%, if the lepton number asymmetry in neutrinos is positive; Otherwise, the percentage increase in $Y$ is $\la 5%$ for $m^2_{ν_μ,ν_τ}-m^2_{ν_s}\la 10^4$ eV. We conclude that the change in the primordial $^4$He yield induced by a neutrino-mixing-generated lepton number asymmetry can be substantial in the upward direction, but limited in the downward direction.

Active-Sterile Neutrino Mixing in the Early Universe and Primordial Nucleosynthesis

We investigate the effects of matter-enhanced (MSW) transformation of neutrinos in the Early Universe on the primordial helium yield (Y_p). We find that Y_p is affected much more by the MSW-induced alterations in the neutrino energy spectra than by the associated change in expansion rate. Specifically, the absence due to transformation of low energy electron neutrinos can significantly affect neutron-proton weak interconversion rates through the lifting of Fermi-blocking of neutron decay at low energies and through halting low-energy neutrino capture on neutrons. We find that the change of Y_p within a causal horizon is -0.005\le δY_p \leq 0.013 for m_{ν_{μ,τ}}^2 - m_{ν_s}^2 \le 10^4 eV^2 in the case of ν_{μ,τ}-ν_s-ν_e mixing, with the lower limit at m_{ν_{μ,τ}}^2 - m_{ν_s}^2 \approx 100 eV^2, and -0.002\le δY_p \leq 0.020 for m_{ν_e}^2 - m_{ν_s}^2 \le 1 eV^2 in the case of ν_e-ν_s mixing.

A New Dark Matter Candidate: Non-thermal Sterile Neutrinos

We propose a new and unique dark matter candidate: $\sim 100$ eV to $\sim 10$ keV sterile neutrinos produced via lepton number-driven resonant MSW (Mikheyev-Smirnov-Wolfenstein) conversion of active neutrinos. The requisite lepton number asymmetries in any of the active neutrino flavors range from 10$^{-3}$ to 10$^{-1}$ of the photon number - well within primordial nucleosynthesis bounds. The unique feature here is that the adiabaticity condition of the resonance strongly favors the production of lower energy sterile neutrinos. The resulting non-thermal (cold) energy spectrum can cause these sterile neutrinos to revert to non-relativistic kinematics at an early epoch, so that free-streaming lengths at or below the dwarf galaxy scale are possible. Therefore, the main problem associated with light neutrino dark matter candidates can be circumvented in our model.

Leptonic Domains in the Early Universe and Their Implications

We extend a treatment of the causal structure of space-time to active-sterile neutrino transformation-based schemes for lepton number generation in the early universe. We find that these causality considerations necessarily lead to the creation of spatial domains of lepton number with opposite signs. Lepton number gradients at the domain boundaries can open a new channel for MSW resonant production of sterile neutrinos. The enhanced sterile neutrino production via this new channel allows considerable tightening of Big Bang Nucleosynthesis constraints on active-sterile neutrino mixing, including the proposed $ν_μ\to ν_s$ solution for the Super Kamiokande atmospheric $ν_μ$ deficit, and the four-neutrino schemes proposed to simultaneously fit current neutrino experimental results.
