Ordering groups and validity in lattice-ordered groups

A characterization is given of the subsets of a group that extend to the positive cone of a right order on the group and used to relate validity of equations in lattice-ordered groups (l-groups) to subsets of free groups that extend to positive cones of right orders. This correspondence is used to obtain new proofs of the decidability of the word problem for free l-groups and generation of the variety of l-groups by the l-group of automorphisms of the real number line. A characterization of the subsets of a group that extend to the positive cone of an order on the group is also used to establish a correspondence between the validity of equations in varieties of representable l-groups (equivalently, classes of ordered groups) and subsets of relatively free groups that extend to positive cones of orders.

Uniform interpolation and coherence

A variety V is said to be coherent if any finitely generated subalgebra of a finitely presented member of V is finitely presented. It is shown here that V is coherent if and only if it satisfies a restricted form of uniform deductive interpolation: that is, any compact congruence on a finitely generated free algebra of V restricted to a free algebra over a subset of the generators is again compact. A general criterion is obtained for establishing failures of coherence, and hence also of uniform deductive interpolation. This criterion is then used in conjunction with properties of canonical extensions to prove that coherence and uniform deductive interpolation fail for certain varieties of Boolean algebras with operators (in particular, algebras of modal logic K and its standard non-transitive extensions), double-Heyting algebras, residuated lattices, and lattices.

A Real-Valued Modal Logic

A many-valued modal logic is introduced that combines the usual Kripke frame semantics of the modal logic K with connectives interpreted locally at worlds by lattice and group operations over the real numbers. A labelled tableau system is provided and a coNEXPTIME upper bound obtained for checking validity in the logic. Focussing on the modal-multiplicative fragment, the labelled tableau system is then used to establish completeness for a sequent calculus that admits cut-elimination and an axiom system that extends the multiplicative fragment of Abelian logic.

Proof Theory and Ordered Groups

Ordering theorems, characterizing when partial orders of a group extend to total orders, are used to generate hypersequent calculi for varieties of lattice-ordered groups (l-groups). These calculi are then used to provide new proofs of theorems arising in the theory of ordered groups. More precisely: an analytic calculus for abelian l-groups is generated using an ordering theorem for abelian groups; a calculus is generated for l-groups and new decidability proofs are obtained for the equational theory of this variety and extending finite subsets of free groups to right orders; and a calculus for representable l-groups is generated and a new proof is obtained that free groups are orderable.

Exact Unification and Admissibility

A new hierarchy of "exact" unification types is introduced, motivated by the study of admissible rules for equational classes and non-classical logics. In this setting, unifiers of identities in an equational class are preordered, not by instantiation, but rather by inclusion over the corresponding sets of unified identities. Minimal complete sets of unifiers under this new preordering always have a smaller or equal cardinality than those provided by the standard instantiation preordering, and in significant cases a dramatic reduction may be observed. In particular, the classes of distributive lattices, idempotent semigroups, and MV-algebras, which all have nullary unification type, have unitary or finitary exact type. These results are obtained via an algebraic interpretation of exact unification, inspired by Ghilardi's algebraic approach to equational unification.

Admissibility via Natural Dualities

It is shown that admissible clauses and quasi-identities of quasivarieties generated by a single finite algebra, or equivalently, the quasiequational and universal theories of their free algebras on countably infinitely many generators, may be characterized using natural dualities. In particular, axiomatizations are obtained for the admissible clauses and quasi-identities of bounded distributive lattices, Stone algebras, Kleene algebras and lattices, and De Morgan algebras and lattices.

Admissibility in Finitely Generated Quasivarieties

Checking the admissibility of quasiequations in a finitely generated (i.e., generated by a finite set of finite algebras) quasivariety Q amounts to checking validity in a suitable finite free algebra of the quasivariety, and is therefore decidable. However, since free algebras may be large even for small sets of small algebras and very few generators, this naive method for checking admissibility in $\Q$ is not computationally feasible. In this paper, algorithms are introduced that generate a minimal (with respect to a multiset well-ordering on their cardinalities) finite set of algebras such that the validity of a quasiequation in this set corresponds to admissibility of the quasiequation in Q. In particular, structural completeness (validity and admissibility coincide) and almost structural completeness (validity and admissibility coincide for quasiequations with unifiable premises) can be checked. The algorithms are illustrated with a selection of well-known finitely generated quasivarieties, and adapted to handle also admissibility of rules in finite-valued logics.

Towards a Proof Theory of Gödel Modal Logics

Analytic proof calculi are introduced for box and diamond fragments of basic modal fuzzy logics that combine the Kripke semantics of modal logic K with the many-valued semantics of Gödel logic. The calculi are used to establish completeness and complexity results for these fragments.
