Free-space reconfigurable quantum key distribution network

We propose a free-space reconfigurable quantum key distribution (QKD) network to secure communication among mobile users. Depends on the trustworthiness of the network relay, the users can implement either the highly secure measurement-device-independent QKD, or the highly efficient decoy state BB84 QKD. Based on the same quantum infrastructure, we also propose a loss tolerant quantum position verification scheme, which could allow the QKD users to initiate the QKD process without relying on pre-shared key.

Toroidal nano-traps for cold polar molecules

Electronic excitations in metallic nanoparticles in the optical regime that have been of great importance in surface enhanced spectroscopy and emerging applications of molecular plasmonics, due to control and confinement of electromagnetic energy, may also be of potential to control the motion of nanoparticles and molecules. Here, we propose a concept for trapping polarizable particles and molecules using toroidal metallic nanoparticles. Specifically, gold nanorings are investigated for their scattering properties and field distribution to computationally show that the response of these optically resonant particles to incident photons permit the formation of a nanoscale trap when proper aspect ratio, photon wavelength and polarization are considered. However, interestingly the resonant plasmonic response of the nanoring is shown to be detrimental to the trap formation. The results are in good agreement with analytic calculations in the quasi-static limit within the first-order perturbation of the scalar electric potential. The possibility of extending the single nanoring trapping properties to two-dimensional arrays of nanorings is suggested by obtaining the field distribution of nanoring dimers and trimers.

Loss-tolerant position-based quantum cryptography

Position-based quantum cryptography (PBQC) allows a party to use its geographical location as its only credential to implement various cryptographic protocols. Such a protocol may lead to important applications in practice. Although it has been shown that any PBQC protocol is breakable if the adversaries pre-share an arbitrarily large entangled state, the security of PBQC in the bounded-quantum-storage model is still an open question. In this paper, we study the performance of various PBQC protocols over a lossy channel under the assumption that no entanglement is pre-shared between adversaries. By introducing the decoy state idea, we show that an extended BB84-type PBQC protocol implemented with a weak coherent source and realistic single photon detectors can tolerate an overall loss (including both the channel loss and the detection efficiency) of 13 dB if the intrinsic quantum bit error rate is 1%. We also study a few continuous variable PBQC protocols and show that they suffer from a 3 dB loss limitation.

Quantum simulation of quantum field theory using continuous variables

Much progress has been made in the field of quantum computing using continuous variables over the last couple of years. This includes the generation of extremely large entangled cluster states (10,000 modes, in fact) as well as a fault tolerant architecture. This has led to the point that continuous-variable quantum computing can indeed be thought of as a viable alternative for universal quantum computing. With that in mind, we present a new algorithm for continuous-variable quantum computers which gives an exponential speedup over the best known classical methods. Specifically, this relates to efficiently calculating the scattering amplitudes in scalar bosonic quantum field theory, a problem that is believed to be hard using a classical computer. Building on this, we give an experimental implementation based on cluster states that is feasible with today's technology.

Duality between zeroes and poles in holographic systems with massless fermions and a dipole coupling

We discuss the zeroes and poles of the determinant of the retarded Green function ($\det G_R$) at zero frequency in a holographic system of charged massless fermions interacting via a dipole coupling. For large negative values of the dipole coupling constant $p$, $\det G_R$ possesses only poles pointing to a Fermi liquid phase. We show that a duality exists relating systems of opposite $p$. This maps poles of $\det G_R$ at large negative $p$ to zeroes of $\det G_R$ at large positive $p$, indicating that the latter corresponds to a Mott insulator phase. This duality suggests that the properties of a Mott insulator can be studied by mapping the system to a Fermi liquid. Finally, for small values of $p$, $\det G_R$ contains both poles and zeroes (pseudo-gap phase).

Repeat-until-success cubic phase gate for universal continuous-variable quantum computation

In order to achieve universal quantum computation using continuous variables, one needs to jump out of the set of Gaussian operations and have a non-Gaussian element, such as the cubic phase gate. However, such a gate is currently very difficult to implement in practice. Here we introduce an experimentally viable 'repeat-until-success' approach to generating the cubic phase gate, which is achieved using sequential photon subtractions and Gaussian operations. We find that our scheme offers benefits in terms of the expected time until success, although we require a primitive quantum memory.

Conductivity of Strongly Coupled Striped Superconductor

We study the conductivity of a strongly coupled striped superconductor using gauge/gravity duality (holography). The study is done analytically, in the large modulation regime. We show that the optical conductivity is inhomogeneous but isotropic at low temperatures. Near but below the critical temperature, we calculate the conductivity analytically at small frequency ω, and find it to be both inhomogeneous and anisotropic. The anisotropy is imaginary and scales like 1/ω. We also calculate analytically the speed of the second sound and the thermodynamic susceptibility.

Spontaneously Generated Inhomogeneous Phases via Holography

We discuss a holographic model consisting of a $U(1)$ gauge field and a scalar field coupled to a charged AdS black hole under a spatially homogeneous chemical potential. By turning on a higher-derivative interaction term between the $U(1)$ gauge field and the scalar field, a spatially dependent profile of the scalar field is generated spontaneously. We calculate the critical temperature at which the transition to the inhomogeneous phase occurs for various values of the parameters of the system. We solve the equations of motion below the critical temperature, and show that the dual gauge theory on the boundary spontaneously develops a spatially inhomogeneous charge density.

Phase Transition to a Hairy Black Hole in Asymptotically Flat Spacetime

We discuss a phase transition of a Reissner-Nordström black hole to a hairy black hole in asymptotically flat spacetime. The hair is due to a massive charged scalar field. The no-hair theorem is evaded thanks to a derivative coupling of the scalar field to the Einstein tensor. The resulting hairy configuration is spherically symmetric. We solve the equations analytically near the transition temperature and show that the hair is concentrated near the horizon decaying exponentially away from it.

Building a Holographic Superconductor with Higher-derivative Couplings

We discuss the gravitational dual of a holographic superconductor consisting of a U(1) gauge field, a complex scalar field coupled to a charged AdS black hole and a higher-derivative coupling between the U(1) gauge field and the scalar with coupling constant η. In the presence of a magnetic field, the system possesses localized spatially dependent droplet solutions which, in the low temperature limit, have smaller critical temperature for η>0 than the droplet solutions without the interaction term (η=0). In the weak magnetic field limit, the opposite behavior is observed: the critical temperature increases as we increase η. We also calculate the energy gap in the probe limit and find that it is larger for η<0 than the energy gap in the conventional case (η=0).

Tree-level Correlators of scalar and vector fields in AdS/CFT

Extending earlier results by Paulos, we discuss further the use of the embedding formalism and Mellin transform in the calculation of tree-level correlators of scalar and vector fields in AdS/CFT. We present an iterative procedure that builds amplitudes by sewing together lower-point off-shell diagrams. Both scalar and vector correlators are shown to be given in terms of Mellin amplitudes. We apply the procedure to the explicit calculation of three-, four- and five-point correlators.

Superconducting Dome from Holography

We find a regime in which a strongly coupled striped superconductor features a superconducting dome. This regime is signified by i) a modulating chemical potential that averages to zero, and ii) a superconducting order parameter that has a scaling dimension larger than 3/2 but less than or equal to 3. We also find that in this regime, the order parameter exhibits a mild dependence on the modulation wavelength of the stripe.

A Novel Mechanism to Generate FFLO States in Holographic Superconductors

We discuss a novel mechanism to set up a gravity dual of FFLO states in strongly coupled superconductors. The gravitational theory utilizes two U(1) gauge fields and a scalar field coupled to a charged AdS black hole. The first gauge field couples with the scalar sourcing a charge condensate below a critical temperature, and the second gauge field provides a coupling to spin in the boundary theory. The scalar is neutral under the second gauge field. By turning on an interaction between the Einstein tensor and the scalar, it is shown that, in the low temperature limit, an inhomogeneous solution possesses a higher critical temperature than the homogeneous case, giving rise to FFLO states.

FFLO States in Holographic Superconductors

We discuss the gravity dual of FFLO states in strongly coupled superconductors. The gravitational theory utilizes two U(1) gauge fields and a scalar field coupled to a charged AdS black hole. The scalar is neutral under the second gauge field. By turning on a magnetic interaction between the second U(1) field and the scalar, it is shown that, in the high-field limit, an inhomogeneous solution possesses a higher critical temperature than the homogeneous case, giving rise to FFLO states close to zero temperature.

Scalar Hair from a Derivative Coupling of a Scalar Field to the Einstein Tensor

We consider a gravitating system of vanishing cosmological constant consisting of an electromagnetic field and a scalar field coupled to the Einstein tensor. A Reissner-Nordström black hole undergoes a second-order phase transition to a hairy black hole of generally anisotropic hair at a certain critical temperature which we compute. The no-hair theorem is evaded due to the coupling between the scalar field and the Einstein tensor. Within a first order perturbative approach we calculate explicitly the properties of a hairy black hole configuration near the critical temperature and show that it is energetically favorable over the corresponding Reissner-Nordström black hole.

Hair on near-extremal Reissner-Nordstrom AdS black holes

We discuss hairy black hole solutions with scalar hair of scaling dimension $Δ$ and (small) electromagnetic coupling $q^2$, near extremality. Using trial functions, we show that hair forms below a critical temperature $T_c$ in the region of parameter space $(Δ, q^2)$ above a critical line $q_c^2 (Δ)$. For $Δ> Δ_0$, the critical coupling $q_c^2$ is determined by the AdS$_2$ geometry of the horizon. For $Δ< Δ_0$, $q_c^2$ is {\em below} the value suggested by the near horizon geometry at extremality. We provide an analytic estimate of $Δ_0$ (numerically, $Δ_0 \approx 0.64$). We also compute analytically the true critical line for the entire range of the scaling dimension. In particular for $q=0$, we obtain an instability down to the unitarity bound. We perform explicit analytic calculations of $T_c$, the condensate and the conductivity. We show that the energy gap in units of $T_c$ diverges as we approach the critical line ($T_c \to 0$).

Gauge theory one-loop amplitudes and the BCFW recursion relations

We calculate gauge theory one-loop amplitudes with the aid of the complex shift used in the Britto-Cachazo-Feng-Witten (BCFW) recursion relations of tree amplitudes. We apply the shift to the integrand and show that the contribution from the limit of infinite shift vanishes after integrating over the loop momentum, by a judicious choice of basis for polarization vectors. This enables us to write the one-loop amplitude in terms of on-shell tree and lower point one-loop amplitudes. Some of the tree amplitudes are forward amplitudes. We show that their potential singularities do not contribute and the BCFW recursion relations can be applied in such a way as to avoid these singularities altogether. We calculate in detail $n$-point one-loop amplitudes for $n=2,3,4$, and outline the generalization of our method to $n>4$.

Generalized Holographic Cosmology

We consider general black hole solutions in five-dimensional spacetime in the presence of a negative cosmological constant. We obtain a cosmological evolution via the gravity/gauge theory duality (holography) by defining appropriate boundary conditions on a four-dimensional boundary hypersurface. The standard counterterms are shown to renormalize the bare parameters of the system (the four-dimensional Newton's constant and cosmological constant). We discuss the thermodynamics of cosmological evolution and present various examples. The standard brane-world scenarios are shown to be special cases of our holographic construction.
