Recoil and Power Corrections in High-x_T Direct-Photon Production

We study a class of nonperturbative corrections to single-inclusive photon cross sections at measured transverse momentum p_T, in the large-x_T limit. We develop an extension of the joint (threshold and transverse momentum) resummation formalism, appropriate for large x_T, in which there are no kinematic singularities associated with recoil, and for which matching to fixed order and to threshold resummation at next-to-leading logarithm (NLL) is straightforward. Beyond NLL, we find contributions that can be attributed to recoil from initial state radiation. Associated power corrections occur as inverse powers of p_T^2 and are identified from the infrared structure of integrals over the running coupling. They have significant energy dependence and decrease from typical fixed-target to collider energies. Energy conservation, which is incorporated into joint resummation, moderates the effects of perturbative recoil and power corrections for large x_T.

Joint resummation in electroweak boson production

We present a phenomenological application of the joint resummation formalism to electroweak annihilation processes at measured boson momentum Q_T. This formalism simultaneously resums at next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy large threshold and recoil corrections to partonic scattering. We invert the impact parameter transform using a previously described analytic continuation procedure. This leads to a well-defined, resummed perturbative cross section for all nonzero Q_T, which can be compared to resummation carried out directly in Q_T space. From the structure of the resummed expressions, we also determine the form of nonperturbative corrections to the cross section and implement these into our analysis. We obtain a good description of the transverse momentum distribution of Z bosons produced at the Tevatron collider.

Power Corrections to e+e- Dijet Event Shapes

We discuss a class of event shapes for e+e- dijet events that include the thrust as a special case. Large logarithmic corrections to the corresponding cross sections can be resummed to all logarithmic orders at leading power. However, irrespective of the order up to which the perturbative expansion is calculated, it has to be supplemented by nonperturbative corrections due to its at best asymptotic nature. We find that the leading power corrections are universal for the class of event shapes discussed here. Based on these findings, we provide sample numerical predictions for the distributions of the new event shapes.

Scaling Rule for Nonperturbative Radiation in a Class of Event Shapes

We discuss nonperturbative radiation for a recently introduced class of infrared safe event shape weights, which describe the narrow-jet limit. Starting from next-to-leading logarithmic (NLL) resummation, we derive an approximate scaling rule that relates the nonperturbative shape functions for these weights to the shape function for the thrust. We argue that the scaling reflects the boost invariance implicit in NLL resummation, and discuss its limitations. In the absence of data analysis for the new event shapes, we compare these predictions to the output of the event generator PYTHIA.

Joint Resummation for Higgs Production

We study the application of the joint resummation formalism to Higgs production via gluon-gluon fusion at the LHC, defining inverse transforms by analytic continuation. We work at next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy. We find that at low Q_T the resummed Higgs Q_T distributions are comparable in the joint and pure-Q_T formalisms, with relatively small influence from threshold enhancement in this range. We find a modest (about ten percent) decrease in the inclusive cross section, relative to pure threshold resummation.

Event Shape/Energy Flow Correlations

We introduce a set of correlations between energy flow and event shapes that are sensitive to the flow of color at short distances in jet events. These correlations are formulated for a general set of event shapes, which includes jet broadening and thrust as special cases. We illustrate the method for electron-positron annihilation dijet events, and calculate the correlation at leading logarithm in the energy flow and at next-to-leading-logarithm in the event shape.

From Long to Short Distances in Perturbative QCD

Infrared safe differential cross sections, such as event shape distributions, can be measured over wide kinematic ranges, from regions where fixed order calculations are adequate to regions where nonperturbative dynamics dominate. Such observables provide an ideal laboratory for the study of the transition between weak and strong coupling in quantum field theory. This talk begins with some of the fundamentals of the perturbative description of QCD and the basis of resummation techniques, followed by a brief discussion of selected topics from recent fixed-order and resummed calculations. It focuses on how resummed perturbation theory has been used to deduce the structure of nonperturbative corrections, and to provide a framework with which to address the transition from short- to long-distance dynamics in QCD.

Interjet Energy Flow/Event Shape Correlations

We identify a class of perturbatively computable measures of interjet energy flow, which can be associated with well-defined color flow at short distances. As an illustration, we calculate correlations between event shapes and the flow of energy, Q_Omega, into an interjet angular region, Omega, in high-energy two-jet e^+e^- -annihilation events. Laplace transforms with respect to the event shapes suppress states with radiation at intermediate energy scales, so that we may compute systematically logarithms of interjet energy flow. This method provides a set of predictions on energy radiated between jets, as a function of event shape and of the choice of the region Omega in which the energy is measured. Non-global logarithms appear as corrections. We apply our method to a continuous class of event shapes.

Energy Flow in Interjet Radiation

We study the distribution of transverse energy, Q_Omega, radiated into an arbitrary interjet angular region, Omega, in high-p_T two-jet events. Using an approximation that emphasizes radiation directly from the partons that undergo the hard scattering, we find a distribution that can be extrapolated smoothly to Q_Omega=Lambda_QCD, where it vanishes. This method, which we apply numerically in a valence quark approximation, provides a class of predictions on transverse energy radiated between jets, as a function of jet energy and rapidity, and of the choice of the region Omega in which the energy is measured. We discuss the relation of our approximation to the radiation from unobserved partons of intermediate energy, whose importance was identified by Dasgupta and Salam.

Recoil and Threshold Corrections in Short-distance Cross Sections

We identify and resum corrections associated with the kinematic recoil of the hard scattering against soft-gluon emission in single-particle inclusive cross sections. The method avoids double counting and conserves the flow of partonic energy. It reproduces threshold resummation for high-p_T single-particle cross sections, when recoil is neglected, and Q_T-resummation at low Q_T, when higher-order threshold logarithms are suppressed. We exhibit explicit resummed cross sections, accurate to next-to-leading logarithm, for electroweak annihilation and prompt photon inclusive cross sections.

Perturbative Quantum Field Theory

This talk introduces perturbative quantum field on a heuristic level. It is directed at an audience familiar with elements of quantum mechanics, but not necessarily with high energy physics. It includes a discussion of the strategies behind experimental tests of fundamental theories, and of the field theory interpretations of these tests

Threshold Resummation and Rapidity Dependence

We study the effects of threshold resummation on the rapidity dependence of single-particle-inclusive cross sections, using the prompt photon cross section as an example. We make use of the full resummation formula at next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy and develop a new technique for treating rapidity in resummation. We compare our phenomenological results with those of previous studies and discuss differences and similarities of the two existing resummation formalisms.

QCD Theory at High Energy

The energy range and quality of strong-interaction data from recent years demand the study of higher orders in perturbative QCD, and of nonperturbative effects. I discuss a selection of recent progress in the theory of QCD at high energy, including examples from perturbative resummation, nonperturbative power corrections and the Regge limit. In each case, techniques of factorization play a central role.

Power corrections in eikonal cross sections

We discuss power corrections associated with the infrared behavior of the perturbative running coupling in the eikonal approximation to Drell-Yan and other annihilation cross sections in hadron-hadron scattering. General properties of the eikonal approximation imply that only even powers of the energy scale are necessary.

Combined recoil and threshold resummation for hard scattering cross sections

We discuss the simultaneous resummation of threshold and recoil enhancements to partonic cross sections due to soft radiation. Our method is based on a refactorization of the parton cross section near its partonic threshold. It avoids double counting, conserves the flow of partonic energy, and reproduces either threshold or recoil resummation when the other enhancements are neglected.
